Hello Guys, and Welcome to Mark's Shrimp Tanks
I thought today we'd have a little trip outside here and I would show you the garden,
because we have lots and lots of squash and zucchini here.
So today's video is gonna be Shrimp vs. Blossom.
I don't know if you can see some of the blossoms in here from the zucchini and the squash
but look how wonderful these plants have turned out.
Remember a few months ago I showed you this patch and it was completely flat and bare,
there was plants in here, but this is how much they've grown.
Okay so let's see if we can harvest one of these blossoms,
preferably from, from a plant that has already started to fruit.
See if we can find our way in here.
Like here for example, we want a blossom that is, um, kind of expired.
Let's see, can you see any of them in there for me guys?
Let's see, I don't want to take one from something that's still to produce its fruit.
Can't actually see any on this plant, let's have a look somewhere else.
Normally there will be quite a few.
Where are they?
I want one that's already done.
Isn't that a wonderful picture there?
Big blossom. Shrimp absolutely love these.
Have to watch for frogs because there's, at this time of the year...
Oh, just as I say it I see one, coincidence or what?
Here, you see?
Where is he?
Right there, a little frog.
Where did he go?
There he is.
See him? Right there.
Right at the end of my finger.
This time of the year we have absolutely loads of them here,
because we live next to a river.
So let's watch where I stand.
No more frogs.
Let's see if I can get one of these blossoms.
Please, there's so much zucchini down there.
Where are all the blossoms?
All the ones I can see are all attached.
They're all attached to things already.
This one is done as well, this one's maybe okay, this is a good blossom here, this one.
So, you just want to twist the end off like that, and that is the blossom.
Okay
And what we're gonna do with this is we're gonna go in the house,
we're gonna put this in boiling hot water for roughly a minute, just to soften it up a little bit
and then put it in the shrimp tank.
And I assure you guys that the shrimp will love these, okay?
Okay guys, welcome back inside.
We have the kettle here that's just boiled, we have our squash blossom here.
We're just gonna, we're gonna kinda blanch it for one minute.
I'm not gonna show you this in every single video, me blanching something for a minute. [chuckles]
Because uh, you'll get tired of seeing it.
Okay so, we're just gonna leave this for roughly one minute,
and hopefully it will sink when it gets into the tank.
Because um, it will make a kind of rubbish video if it doesn't sink, don't ya think?
Let's put a little bit more hot water in here.
I don't want it to break up either.
It kind of looks like it will float.
I think there's a part on the end here, there, that want's to float.
Okay, so I'm gonna leave that for a minute.
Let's talk about what I'm doing in the shrimp room today, as we wait for that one minute.
I have much more zucchini drying here. I have this in my shop if you guys want to buy some.
Zucchini chips is a very very good food for your shrimp.
If you have your own zucchini patch, I suggest this is something you do.
You can do this, you can dry them on the window sill if you have a, a reasonably sunny climate
you can dry them on the window sill like this, but this is a fast and easy way of doing it.
These were fresh in here yesterday and you can see how much they've shrunk down.
What else? Um I have this little tank that I used to have over here before, it used to have Golden's in it,
and what we're gonna do is we're gonna re-purpose it for my Triop tank. This is where my Triops are gonna go.
And they are over here.
And they are doing okay, the hatch rate wasn't spectacular.
So far I think I've seen like 2 or 3 in here, you're not gonna be able to see them with this camera.
But that is that. This is going to be moved and the Triop tank is going to go here.
I'm going to put a sand substrate etc. in there, and we're gonna see what we can do with them
because I think they'll be a pretty interesting tank.
This tank just now only has java moss in it and it's mixed with duckweed and everything.
There's lots and lots of algae in there you can just see it in the corner.
I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with all this java moss, if I'm just gonna chuck it out or what
because I think I would need to treat it for algae before I could use it
but then it's not really shrimp safe if I use an algae treatment, so.
It's a little bit of a waste because there is a lot of java moss in there, but we shall see.
What tank will we put the blossom in?
Which one?
Which one? I've still to do a water change in this one today,
this one had a water change yesterday so I think we'll put it in here.
Let's see, has it sank?
Not really Mark...
It hasn't really sunk.
I'm not sure it will sink either.
m'yeh
I can't tell actually, I don't think it's gonna sink.
See it's sinking there, so I think what we need to do is
We need to drain it a little bit,
cool it down with some tap water,
and then put it in the tank.
I think that was long enough.
I'm gonna get my metal strainer here, I like to use for this.
And we are going to strain it.
And it looks like a but of a mushy mess at the moment, but I'm assured that they love this kind of thing.
I'm just gonna give it a rinse gently under some cold water.
I don't want to break up the blossom, cause it's probably quite fragile.
m'kay?
Think that's enough?
Let's go over to the tank. Where did I put my little forceps?
Let's put this in and hopefully it will sink.
I don't want it floating around all over the place because it will be kind of hard to film.
Let's see...
Sink or float guys?
There's a bit of air in there, let me squeeze it out.
It wants to float so far.
Float dammit!
I wonder if I can push...
Now let me see, what will I do here? Will I try and push it into the substrate with these forceps?
I don't think it wants to stand up, let me just put it against the glass.
Is that good enough?
These are stainless steel so, it will be good enough.
How are they reacting to it? Let's have a look.
The same as always, but these shrimp always get a little bit excited when you put any kind of food in here
because there's so many of them.
Look at this over here guys, it looks like a christmas tree.
More shrimp, more!
Right so what we're gonna do is, I'll put my little stand here and you're gonna go into macro mode,
and we are going to see what the shrimp really think of Zucchini blossom.
This is either zucchini or squash blossom.
one momento
[music begins]
[music ends]
Okay so let's have a look, How did they enjoy it?
I would say they absolutely loved it!
It looks like they destroyed it as well.
It's quite cool looking at this, I can see this one has a little bit in it's mouth, up here I can see another bit-
little shrimp has a little piece of the flower in it's mouth.
It turns out that this is actually a cracking food right, so what I'm gonna do is,
I'm actually gonna include this in my Shrimp Versus series, I'm gonna call it, um
"Shrimp Versus Zucchini Blossom"
because I think this will be of use to anyone that ever searches for this title ever.
If they ever search for zucchini blossoms as a shrimp food
they will be able to find my video very very easily so...
This is gonna go into the Shrimp Versus series.
So I wanna Thank You guys for watching.
Let me know if you have any questions in the comment section below
and I'll catch you all in the next one.
Happy Shrimp Keeping Guys!
