Hello Everyone. How are you?
So, today I am in a different place
I'm here where I teach. I will have some time between students.
So ignore the noises, there are many instruments been played around.
People are practicing here.
Anyway, I would like to show up here and say Hello!
It has been a time since my last video
My classes started and all that I can say is
as you can see.. class started
Look all this people in the bus stop
and walking around
As I just said, I disappear because of school, but we are back.
I would do this video all in one.
About study abroad and student visa
But I decided to break it into 3 parts
To not spend a lot of time in only one long video
and in the process to built in this video
[professional]
[Fancy] [with plot]
My writing here
I stepped in something that I decided to transform in a video by itself
When we talk about living abroad, for study, work..
The first advise that I always give is:
"Go study the local language" [go study!]
For some people, it sounds pretty obvious.
But I see so many people struggling because of the language
That I concluded that it is not that obvious
So I decided to divide it into three videos
and in one of them I will make the entire video for that topic
How important is to speak the local language when you go abroad
And this issue is very personal but at the same time it is almost a social convention
so, in this video I am not talking only about people that want to go study
I'm talkng about everyone that decided to go abroad
In our case, out of Brazil
Of course, I said in another video
when applying to an university
if you want to study in another language
you must know the language in which you are going to be studying.
Because you are going to make tests, assignments
And understand the subject of lectures in another language than your native one.
It is not exactly easy
and if you still have many questions about the language
it is even harder
Of course that we are always learning
I don't know everything, by the opposite I am far away to know
But the little amount that I knew, already helped a lot
Besides the fact that none university is going to let you go in without a proof of language skills
a diploma or a test that you are able to speak that language
Generally, most universities require a test
TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge
So, in the video to apply to university I talk again about it.
But I believe that in this case, it is unarguable.
There is no flexibility in this matter
Now, talking about other cases
Some people go to work abroad
Or it goes as accompaniment to someone that is going to study
That is William situation, that came with me
He arrived here with very basic English skills
And day after day, he went to work, faced the difficulties
And now he is much better.
Ok, he still miss some more specific skills
if he needs to write an essay, he probably would find it hard
But nowadays he communicates very well in English
But I would say that this is an exception
I would not think that like the average
We always hear stories that a person came to here without speaking the language and now this person is super fine.
Again, how many of them didn't make it?
How many failures are there? They are not going to do a video telling us.
But we tend to look at success stories as the average
And most of the times, in this case, they are exceptions
So, my advise is
Doesn't matter what you are going to do abroad, even tourism
I would always suggest to you know what everybody else is speaking
and you need a basic local language skills to do that
Even who is going to study in countries like Japan or Germany,
That have schools programs in English
I always say: "you still have to order food in German"
So I always suggest having a minimum level on the local language.
Then, there are other reasons for it
I took notes here
Your necessities day-by-day
You can be living with someone that speaks local language
But in a certain moment, you can be alone and need something
need to order something, need to buy something
so, it is a little awkward that you don't have idea of the language of where you are living
And believe me, I know people that are here for years
and do not speak the local language
they stay in close communities
only speaking their native language
and then it links with my second reason
that is social and cultural inclusion
We want to arrive in another country and be accepted
and be able to interact with local people
and watch a TV, listen to the radio, understand a joke
and unfortunately, if you do not have any notion of the local language
that is impossible
Even people being super nice with you, it is going to be complicate
Then, I listen to many people complaining that
"in that country, everybody is cold, impersonal. Nobody cares about us. Discrimination"
I'm not telling that it cannot happen
But maybe it could be a little problem because of cultural differences?
Because after you know how to speak.. beyond that is the cultural understanding.
Language comes first.
Sometimes we don't even understand the culture or integrate to it.
Because we cannot do the minimum: communicate.
So, be careful when listening to these stories that "in that place everybody is mean"
Really? Maybe it was just a miscommunication?
Ok?
Besides that... let's start a little "dark side"
If you are in troubles
If you get involved in an accident
If you are even in a threatening/dangerous situation.
And you do not speak the language
It's hard.
If a police officer inquires you about a situation that could be a huge misunderstanding.
It can end up very badly if you don't know how to deal with it.
I talk a lot about people traveling to USA.
Airport situations
You are going to talk with the border officer
You are going to explain what you are doing, where are you going
Who is going to study, they are going to make questions
They did with me couple times
Who is going to work, even more questions
Tourists generally are forgiven.
Because they are touring. They do not have this "requirement" supposedly.
But other visas are not much forgiven.
So, this reliability to talk in the local language
and nobody is suggesting to be a Shakespeare.
But only communicate well
and be able to deal with situations that even in our home languages are already hard
imagine in a foreign language
Unfortunately, accidents and misunderstoods happen everywhere
So, I think that those were the main points that I wrote here
But it is the peak of Iceberg.
People have this tendency to "I will go there and then I learn"
Again, i'm not saying that it cannot happen
Obviously, everybody here is learning all the time.
Even if your English is already awesome
When you arrive here, you learn even more
The fact that you already pursue language skills
And increase your skills here
Ok, again, I'm not saying that it cannot happen
But try to have the basics
or guarantee that someone is going to be translating for you all the time
in some point, you can be alone
and at this point, would be great if you could do more than mimics
communicate in a foreign language
I will always suggest English if you do not know which one do first
Because English is kind of everywhere
I had a little bad experience with some francophones that were not very nice
Again, it was an exception
Most of the people do their best to communicate
But there are some people that are with the "Quebec proud" and answer in French when you ask in English
So, if you are going to Quebec. Learn French
If you are going to other specific countries learn the local language
But if you do not know what to learn, learn English
To study, to work, to tour. It is always important and polite
People tend to be happy to see you struggling in their language
At least we try and helps to break the ice
That's it
I think it is already with 10 min long
I will do the other videos now
Maybe I add something from home
So the scenario is gonna change
And that's it
See you. MOM! I'm alive!
I didn't die. It was just the return to classes that kind of plowed me
Everything is alright
Thanks for watching
Enjoy and subscribe
And watch other videos
