Good day and welcome to the Lord Pepe channel.
Now I will cover the leftist green party.
The leftist green movement first ran for parliament in 1999
and got 6 MPs elected.
The current chairman of the party is Katrín Jakobsdóttir
and it has been polling almost 30%
but today on the 18th of october around 19%
so their polling numbers are really fluctuating.
There is one issue that has been especially troublesome for VG [the leftist green movement]
Which I think illustrates that the party is very different in the countryside as opposed to in the city.
Perhaps the Left-green movement is a bit like the Scoial Democratic Allience except more to the left in the city.
but in the countryside they are perhaps more like the Progressive party [a farmer's party] except more to the left.
The issue is whether or not to join the EU which around half of their supporters are in favour of.
there is also a very visible opposition to joining within the party.
The evening before the election in 2009 VG made promises that were very direct and in accordance with it's policies on the matter.
Is it a possibility Steingrímur that an application for joining the EU will be made right after the election?
no
That's how the Social Democrats have been talking.
no
That it will begin this summer.
When can it begin?
It's not in line with out policies and we have no mandate to do so?
and even if the leaders of the party put that forward it would be rejected.
Things turned out differently...
Maybe Atli Gíslason shed light on why VG didn't fullfill it's campaign promises.
I am positive that before the election in 2009 a small group of leaders of VG and the Social Democratic Allience.
That they would apply to join the EU and approve an Icesave deal.
Which would be necessary to join the EU
The truth was kept from me.
and many others just before the election.
I was mislead and I mislead voters in the southern district.
I'm sorry for that and I apologize.
the application is in full swing and out laws are being adjusted to the EU and IPA funds are flowing into the country.
in direct opposition to our policies.
Atli Gíslason wrote in the paper.
Katrín Jakobsdóttir was however crystal clear before the election.
Ingibjörg Sólrún [SDA] said that it couldn't work with the Independence party unless they agreed to apply for the EU.
don't you fear that if you work with the Social Democratic Alliance?
first we have to vote and when we sit down after the election, if that happen to be both out parties.
Then I believe we'll have more in common than naught.
especially in our welfare policies.
Do you want to put it to a vote?
Our position is clear we suggested voting on it inb the first place.
Do you want a referendum [on applying for the EU] you just have to say yes or no.
I think it's important that these two parties work together and reach a conclusion
and the nation will have its say...
are you ready for a double election [that is the referendum coinciding with another election]
We have to look into that possibility...
people have to know that before the election....
That was an idea that we put forward so obviously it is a possibility.
We just need direct democracy and then the people can decide for themselves!
Direct democracy is the only thing that'll work.
This old party rubbish is over!
oh well maybe not so clear...
She did however give direct answers in a debate between the chairmen recently.
I'm going to ask Þorvaldur.
What is the position of the people's movement to the EU and how does it differ from the Left-Green Movement's position?
Well, I don't know how well I can interpret the psoition of the Left-green movement...
They seem to be having difficulties with that themselves.
our position is however clear
We are opposed to joining the EU.
I don't know how much I have to support that position...
You don't have to you've answered the question.
So the difference between our policies and the left-green movement....
They should at least try to answer that.
They appear to be both in favour and against joining.
I have to respond to this since the question is sort of directed at me as well.
It's clear that we don't want Iceland to join the EU.
We suggest however that we hold a referendum if it's requested.
We will not apply unless the nation has it say.
Now someone might ask, why is this important?
This was mostly from 2009, or 8 years ago.
I'd keep that in mind my dear voters if you are concerned with the EU.
Because the Social Democratic Alliance aims to join.
and it's willing to do anything to join.
and Vg is clearly ready to negotiate on everything.
I have the theory that VG supported the application to join in exchange for the district pork spending of the century.
that is the silica factory in Bakki.
Katrín I want to ask you...
in the last days of parliament you decided to approve the Silica factory in Bakki.
and that it would effectively enjoy tax breaks worth 26 million ISK [250K USD] per job created.
Are you ok with this?
Are you satisfied with this prioritisation of the left green movement?
in regards to your economic policies and Bakki...
There was an non binding agreement on building a aluminum smelter.
what we are looking at here...
is a ten times smaller project when it comes to eneregy usage...
The energy needed can be found already by using the excess electricity that we produce.
or we can harness energy from places such as Þeystarreykir which have already been approved.
it's also important since Bjarnarflag has been mentioned, that I mention that it is our policy that energy there shouldn't be harnessed.
unless it's perfectly clear that it would not effect the ecology of Mývatn [a lake].
so it's important to measure the environmental impact and we don't think it will be needed.
Do you think it's ok that the state is paying so much with each job?
It is clearly an industrial project...
It's a lot smaller though than an aluminum smelter.
It's not any smaller than the steel works at Grundartangi.
much more jobs are created per watt of energy produced...
This is a compromise but we have never stated that we were against industry as such.
We don't think of this as a heavy industry. No one defines this as heavy industry.
Not forgetting the tunnel through Vaðlaheiði [in the highlands]
The engineer Pálmi Kristinsson has made a thorough and independent assessment on the presumptions of the Vaðlaheiðar tunnel project.
Pálmi was an advisor to Spölur [tunnel company] when preperations were made for the Hvalfjörður tunnel.
and was and advisor to the government in 2010 when it came to large roadwork projects.
It is his conclusion that the collection of tolls will not pay for the tunnel.
They simply do not add up. the expenses will be greater and the income lower than anticipated.
Then expenses are vaguely assumed and the runnign costs are underestimated.
the traffic is to little..
and traffic in the area has dwindled.
that the increase in traffic and the willingness to pay are both over estimated.
The loans are risky and the government will have to assume billions of ISK in expenses.
it is also doubtful that the tunnel can be refinanced.
with 3% interest without state guarantees in the year 2017 when payment is due.
then the preparations for the project are harshly criticized.
the financial preparation poor.
the government is also criticized for unprofessional conduct.
and the state's interests had been poorly represented.
then the advisors to Vaðlaheiðargöng LLC. had little experience working at projects such as these.
Since the application to join the EU fell through VG got a whole lot for nothing.
That is if there is any truth to my theory that VG got this in exchange for approving the EU application.
What do you think?
I'm I just speaking non sense?
or was this part of the agreement that Atli mentioned?
judge for yourself.
