If you don't already know I've been making my way through The Mass Effect series
Like I explained in a recent video the series seems right up my alley,
yet, I took over ten years for me to finally get around the playing it. Unfortunately as I discussed in my speedrun episode on Mass Effect
While I didn't regret my time with it
I found it to be full of problems everything from poor sound
Mediocre world design and gameplay that could best be described as ok. That said I saw potential a story was pretty alright
And I also fell in love with thefantastic characters. As a result, it wasn't long until I started Mass Effect 2
Fade up: Electronic music
Set a month after the events of the previous game you're once again in the now more
heroic space combat boots of Commander Shepard on the mission to destroy the last of the geth
Which goes well right up until the point that the Normandy is destroyed and Shepherd is killed. Right off the bat
I have to point out the sound design in this scene is infinitely better than the previous game
It knows when to use music and sound effects and you when to shut up
Fade Up: Everything but Shepard's breathing
But, anyway the setup for Mass Effect 2 is as new big evil set of villains the Reapers ready to destroy the universe and Shepard
Has to stop them the help of shady organization Cerberus
inherently Mass Effect 2 tries
Incredibly hard to be more dramatic than the previous game
But without really raising the stakes
Case in point as I pointed out Shepard is pretty much killed in the beginning of the game. This doesn't really have any consequences
You know they'll be fine cuz they're on the cover
There's nothing too interesting about them being killed
Similarly the way, they're brought back is only really used to illustrate that Cerberus is inherently powerful
Not really anything else compare that to my beloved Deus Ex Human Revolution
It similarly starts with its main character being killed
But ends up being used as a way to explore the in universe augmentation debate and to a lesser extent
Jensen dealing were suddenly being augmented
Similarly to Mass Effect Mass Effect 2 has a large and mostly fantastic
cast of characters. The six characters from the previous
Game have been increased to, depending on you if you have the DLC, anywhere from 9 to 11
returning from Mass Effect are fan favorites
Tali, the Quarian tech expert, Garrus the turian ex-CSEC operative turned Normandy crew member and Joker you're cocky
But funny pilot. New however are your Cerberus companions, Miranda and Jacob. Miranda is initially portrayed to be something of a
Scientist off screen: ... Cold hearted bitch
But this facade quickly evaporates with her quickly becoming the sympathetic side of Cerberus and for better
Or worse the sexy side. Jacob on the other hand manages to do the impossible
And somehow be less interesting than the previous games portrayal of Kaidan. Outside Cerberus new characters include Mordin Solas, a scientists
Who'd been studying the Krogan genophage - A disease that effectively wiped out a large amount of the krogan population
Jack who is incredibly intense and hates Cerberus with a passion for
Experimenting on her as she grew up making a her inherently the antithesis of Miranda
Grunt, a lab-grown
Krogan, whose intended to create the perfect Krogan as a possible solution to the Genophage, who's Joined the Normandy team as a way to
Deal with his desire for violence
Samara an asari Justicar who shows us more brutal and ruthless side to the asari, Thane, a drell - a new reptile-like race
Newly introduced in Mass Effect 2 who's rumored to be on the most skilled assassins in the galaxy. Edi, a VI, think Siri
But actually useful, who's Joker's...
companion
Edi: Reproduction is not intended to be perfect mr Morowe seamless improvements were made
Joker: and there's the downside
Elecx V/O: Yeah, companion. And Legion, who's probably most interesting cuz he is a geth
You know those Synthetic aliens you shot up in the last game. As a result he basically lets the game explore the geth in a different way then
the bad guys
I mean really the game does take a lot of opportunity to explore
races and characters in new in different ways everything from Quarian politics Asari brutality
And two different sides of growing up with Cerberus. And none of the character's side missions were bad
With even Jacob's being more interesting than his character unfortunately all these character side missions are tied to a kind of annoying loyalty system
Loyalty systems are borrowed from Bioware's previous game, Dragon Age Origins, in which there was a mechanic of loyalty from your companions. If you made
In universe decisions they liked then their loyalty would increase adding some dialogue options
choices in the game and
Potentially allowing the warden to become romantically involved with them. True to the Mass Effect
design goals Mass Effect 2 took this mehanic and then simplified it. If you make choices your squad members like during their side quest then
Their loyalty will level up which only really affects the outcome of the end game something
I'll get to in a moment it doesn't affect things like this scene where Jack and Miranda fight over Cerberus for instance
That's affected instead by Shepards morality Paragon or renegade unless you went almost a hundred percent Paragon the entire game you have to make
Choice between whatever you like Jack or Miranda better. like I'd mentioned before loyalty mostly effects the endgame
I think it's a good concept the idea of picking the right person for the job
During the endgame could affect how it goes and who survives
But since its tied to loyalty with the exception of your first tech expert who can die if you don't complete the level fast enough you
Pretty much only have to select characters who like you case in point Miranda was down on loyalty with me
So I just took her along as my squad member and it was fine
But perhaps my biggest issue of Mass Effect 2 is the fact that in order to tighten up gameplay?
It made the world more into levels and less into a universe as a result the levels are made up of waist-high walls,
Perfect for you to hide behind and corridors pushing you in the direction of the plot. In fact
the game's world's a lot less open feeling my favorite example is the Citadel. The Citadel in Mass Effect 1 for me anyway was the
Game's best point was large and gorgeous feeling like an impressive Space Station. Mass Effect 2's Citadel is
Comparatively smaller and generally awkward feeling in comparison, which is funny because Mass Effect, two's Normandy feels like a logical improvement
It's less a hollow feeling
Set-piece and feels more like an actual ship that people live on. There's even a mess sergeant now which is awesome
It's a sort of tiny detail that's incredibly easy to ignore in fact the entire Normandy feels a lot more alive than the previous game
Similarly to the world design issues mission is a far less
Seamless than the previous game while the previous game will let you finish your missions
Seamlessly with a cutscene or maybe some comms chatter to let you know Mass Effect 2 is decided to go much more in your face
With an incredibly cheesy mission report page with some details of your mission not a big fans be honest
I rather the more open-ended feeling endings of the previous game Mass Effect 2
also has some more technical gameplay issues the typical PC keyboard has around 100 keys and
Even something like a laptop has at least 50. Inspite of this, Mass Effect 2 insists on using
spacebar for a lot of its interactions everything from opening doors
initiating hacking getting into cover and
Climbing or leaping over cover as a result basic movement is very awkward filling with points where you need to enter cover just to get
Up a page in fact all of the game feels awkwardly ported to the PC
things like flying the Normandy through space in the map screen
Which involves clicking in the general direction you want to go, or the scroll bars
that don't actually scroll with the scroll wheel. Graphically Mass Effect 2 is
Noticeably better its predecessor everything looks nicer with higher res textures higher polycounts and more visual effects the UI is also mostly improved
But there is certain elements
that I'm not super into. Things like Shepards health and shields bigger and centralized which is useful helps with visibility
But does inherently show you less information than the previous game. Especially about your squad members. Audio wise as I mentioned earlier
I did find was vastly improved everything is much nicer sounding from sound effects point of view and the audio engine is also newer and
Better not hitting any noticeable limits while playing
Fade Up: A full collection of music and sound effects, none of which cut out
Elecx V/O: But perhaps the most
significant change Audio wise is the music. Jack Wall and Sam Hullock were joined by David Cates and Jimmy Henson to create a soundtrack that
noticably better than the previous if not necessarily much more memorable perhaps
It's because I'm not particularly attached to the game, but with the exception of the suicide mission
Fade Up: Orchestiral, heroic music
Or the Illusive man theme
Fade Up: Orchestrial, with a hint of electronic, ambience
Elecx V/O: I didn't really find a music Very
iconic, and the latter may be related more to the fact that it played every time you finished a mission
But not being iconic and being bad aren't the same thing and music here is still pretty good
Elecx on camera: All in all, Mass Effect 2 is a solid
Improvement on a flawed but ok game sure it has technical issues poor
PC controls and some gameplay issues like an annoying loyalty system
vastly improves upon Mass Effect with superior story improved graphics their OST, combined with a
Fantastic combination of new and old characters while I don't see myself finishing the original again anytime soon,
I could totally see myself finishing this one again at some point. And with that I'll be interested to check out Mass Effect 3 soon
