Interview - Entrevista | Annette Lavrijsen (Shinrin-Yoku) - Duration: 9:44.

Annette Lavrijsen has been the chief editor of Women's Health magazine in the Netherlands.

Now she's a freelance journalist that writes about health, psychology and nature.

A few years ago she heard of Shinrin-Yoku, also known as "forest bathing",

the Japanese art against stress through nature, and decided to write her first book about it.

The Malpaso publishing house has recently translated it into Spanish

and I was able to talk with Annette in the Malpaso bookshop in Barcelona.

Hello Annette

thank you very much for being here today

and congratulations on your new book.

Thank you for having me.

First of all, I was surprised to read that the first time you heard of Shinrin-Yoku

you thought it was some kind of secret meetings and shamanic rituals in the middle of the forest…

But then you realized it had nothing to do with what you had imagined…

How was the process of understanding Shinrin-Yoku and deciding to write a book about it?

It was actually… Shinrin-Yoku was mostly for me a recognition…

confirming a feeling I already had inside,

that nature is healing in several levels.

I grow up on a farm, in a little town in the Netherlands, close to the Belgium border,

and our house was surrounded by forest.

So as a kid I used to play everyday outdoors. I felt very connected to nature.

But of course, life happens, I moved to the city to study,

got a stressful job as an editor, deadlines, you know the drill, I think we all know it…

I tried all kind of mindfulness courses,

yoga, meditation,

I even went to a ten days silent meditation retreat,

and it was all great. But went I came back home,

and sat on my meditation pillow to do my daily practice and meditation

I found it very difficult, I couldn't find the inner peace.

So I was asking myself "ok, what truly calms you down, Annette?"

And the answer was nature.

So I decided to go more often into nature,

I went camping, I did solo trekking all over the world,

and it really helped me to calm down, but also to get peace of mind and also a clear mind.

After I came back from a trip to Tasmania and I was describing my magical experience to my friend in a café

and she said: "Annette, did you know that I have a word for this in Japanese, Shinrin-Yoku?"

Oh, really? Of course, it's Japanese… they have beautiful words for everything.

So then my first thought was wow, maybe,

as they have such a beautiful culture they must have rituals,

and they call it "forest bathing" so… naked?

Who knows?

Do you have to take a bath with your clothes on?

So I started researching because I was intrigued.

I went to Japan as well to research it.

And then I found out it's not like a therapy with rules

and you need to do this and this and then you feel happy and healthy again.

It is more like… Yeah, for me it's more the philosophical

concept of the healing force of nature.

In the book there are multiple exercises

to enjoy forest bathing -with your clothes on-

and enhance observation, meditation, self-consciousness, creativity…

You even encourage people to write haikus, right?

Yes, why not?

Is there any exercise that you particularly like?

Now, what I always do myself,

there's a very simple exercise –and I also describe it in the book-

and it's like… visualize you are a tree.

So just stand upright and feel how the roots reach into the earth,

and not only to get nutrition and water from the soil,

but also to release the sources of energy we have during the day.

Because it's a two way road.

It's all very easy and approachable because it should be for everyone, I think.

You've been guiding some "forest bathing" sessions around Barcelona these days…

How was that?

It was amazing. Really special to see…

because there will be forest bathing sessions coming up in Netherlands as well,

Barcelona has the scoop

because the book will be published here first

and the in two weeks in the Netherlands.

So here I was a really nice surprise to see that

in the beginning people are, like, waiting,

, and they want to hear more, they are curious about what is Shirin-Yoku.

It means that we slow down our pace

and take these natural surroundings in with all of our senses.

Specially now in spring it's beautiful, and also to feel it…

touch a tree, you don't need to hug it if you don't want to,

just touch it, or touch the soil.

But then with this "forest bathing" sessions we went to Collserola and to the Ciutadella, the park,

and even in the park, we were walking slowly

and then we lied down on the lawn, eyes closed, focusing on our breathing…

and you could feel a calmness coming over us,

everybody was very relaxed.

There were traffic noises in the background,

but when I asked afterwards "what sound did you noticed most?"

it was the bird song; they didn't even noticed the traffic

because it fades away, this background noise.

So even in a city park you can have benefits of Shinrin-Yoku.

While reading I found all kind of quotes

from very different personalities:

Greek philosophers, oriental masters, movie characters,

scientific geniuses like Einstein… In fact you finish the book

with a poem by Frederico Garcia Lorca!

Was it laborious to collect them? How long did it take you?

I love quotes about nature

so I had quite a library already…

and I love Lorca!

I also thought to show people that

"nature is healing" it's not something new,

it's an ancient wisdom and it's also not solely uniquely for Japan or the Far East.

Yeah, the power of nature is something we've already noted

but now we can prove it, right?

Yes, because we all know a forest walk is healthy,

of course, it calms us down, but now there have also been so many studies

all over the world, not just in Japan, but also, you know, in the University of Barcelona.

They have proven that nature is beneficial to our health.

Now, to name a few examples:

a forest bath of 40 minutes

lowers our blood pressure, lowers our heart rate,

activates our immune system, improves our concentration,

boosts our creativity, helps with sleeping problems,

stress, anxiety, depression…

And I think one of the things that astounded me most

in my research is that wow,

there's so much! And that's what I thought;

"you could write a book on this".

So, that's what happened!

Finally, can you give me one or two words

that describe what this art meant to you

in order to convince those sceptical readers?

I think the two words that describe it best are…

reconnecting

with nature and with yourself.

So that's more words, but, like,

the reconnecting is the most important about Shinrin-Yoku.

We've always learned and have been taught that we are outside of nature,

we need to dominate nature with our buildings…

we can beat nature.

But whereas in the East,

they believe that, just like the plants and the animals and the elements,

that we are part of one holistic system.

And specially now in our modern society,

the global warming…. we spend so much time on our screens, our smartphone…

we are constantly online, connected with the whole world,

except with nature and also with ourselves,

because if you consider you are nature,

how does that influence in your experience in nature?

I mean, quoting a little bit Yoda from Star Wars,

the Force is everywhere, it's nature.

That's a better one, the Force!

pop today I'm going to do an OC or original character of Bethany Frye my

daughter yes that is flying pings and let's see if we can make a Funko pop

look like her yes I think that would be cool so let's see what we can come up

with okay well as you can see from Bethany's picture or flying pings that

she has really really long curly red hair and it's just beautiful

oh my gosh she always gets noticed every time we go anyplace and people are

always telling her how pretty her hair is yeah she probably gets tired of

hearing that and it probably embarrasses her sometime but she has always noticed

seriously so how are we going to start here let's give her some blush and she

also needs red eyebrows and her hair there's one here that is for curly hair

do you see it it's the only one and it's not that long so we kind of have to use

it for Bethany because she has curly hair yes so there's the start over so

what do you think we should put her in and also for accessories I'm not sure if

I should put headphones on her because I think she usually films without it so

I'll probably just leave those off I know people usually draw her with a

green shirt from where she was on venture and tell what she's still on

Ventura and tail but oh I think that looks cute look at that that's adorable

I think those are cute okay let's leave her in that and accessory I am NOT gonna

put a headphones on her I mean I could but usually she records without them and

most of the time she doesn't even use a webcam anymore so let's just leave it

like that and what do you think we should do with a pet she likes cats and

she likes dogs we do have a little dog still here and we have some cats so I'm

gonna give her a cat and I have an idea okay she knows somebody that has a

certain kind of cat no and not like that like that yes she knows some a boy named

gut and he has a cat that looks kind of like that this name Kenji so I am going

to make that her pet that's cute seriously cute I like that and what do

you think for a background yes we need an awesome background for her it has to

be pretty and no it doesn't have to be green but it needs to be nice that's

pretty that is bright seriously bright that looks nice everything looks nice

okay that looks good I'm gonna pick that one I like that with the green and it's

not overbearing or anything okay so there is Bethany that is Bethany fry or

flying pings and she's also on Ventura until she plays a lot of different

characters on that you probably know her as Gertrude and Maddie friends some

Far too many people like to portray President Donald Trump as someone that he is not.

They think he is an awful heartless person who only looks out for himself and doesn't

even care about his own family.

Recently, we reported about an 8-year-olds plea to the president to help save his father's

life.

Their whole family was shocked when they actually heard back from the president about the young

boy's plea.

One Illinois couple just learned what kind of person President Trump really is when he

just changed their lives forever.

You really never know what one simple act you do can really affect someone's life

and change it forever.

Fox News reports:

ORLAND PARK, Ill.

– A suburban Chicago couple was not surprised that President Trump and First Lady Melania

Trump were not able to attend their 2017 wedding.

However, Brianna and Timothy Dargert of Orland Park decided to mail an invitation to the

White House anyway.

The couple was married in May, 2017.

Months later, a surprise came in the mail: a congratulatory letter signed by Mr. and

Mrs. Trump.

It read: "We join your family and friends in celebrating this joyous occasion and your

love and commitment to one another.

May your hearts grow fonder and your love deeper each day, and may God continue to bless

your life together."

We both admire the President greatly," the couple wrote in an email to Fox 32 News, "and

to receive something from him personally completely touched our hearts.

It is wonderful to see that he truly cares about the American people!"

During a time where there is so much craziness going on in the world, it is always refreshing

to hear that the president and first lady really do care about the American people.

They are dealing with so much in their personal lives right now but they took the time to

do such a simple thing that showed this couple how much they really do care.

It is great to hear stories of people taking the time to do one simple act that can change

someone's life forever.

Everyone needs to start focusing on all of the good that the president has done rather

than making up stories about him that aren't true.

Hey everyone its Rob with Rob finds treasure and we got a box of nickels to hunt

Let me tell you it's been a few weeks for me with nickels I've been working on the

half dollars and trying to catch up to the many number of penny boxes I have

fallen behind since his big vacation time for me and anyway I was picking up

my half dollars today at Wells Fargo ran across the street and picked up a box of

nickels out of Chase Bank and I don't get to this Chase Bank too often looks

like I haven't opened up nickle boxes too often either but we'll get this one

open as you know we're checking to make sure they circulated cuz it's no good to

have a brand new box nickels and looks like we got ourselves

a nice circulated box and nickels here they've kind of fallen oddly it almost

looks like we're short a few rolls I'm pretty sure that it's just because the

box is a little bit though bowed out they probably got a roll or two in the

wrong spots but I have to do what I have to do and I have to count these out so

it'll be going to take the first couple of rows off make sure I've got 50 rolls

and then we'll get to the hunt all right pull them all out

there's no Enders but there's 50 rolls let's get them back in the box and begin

the hunt all right guys we're in the third roll got ourselves a Canadian here

first one in the Box 1987 and we also got ourselves a 1953 D so far so not off

to a bad start we're gonna keep looking I'll tell you this 66 fooled me I

thought it was gonna be a silver hen it's a 66 unbelievable I waited up it's

not silver either putting aside cuz it's kind of cool

oh let's keep looking all right guys no next rule ruled in perform got ourselves

a 1948 Philadelphia we'll take it that's our third one

all right guys seventh roll in we got another four teeth coin here 1941

Philadelphia there's a second from the 40s so we're doing pretty good let's get

back to the hunt yeah all right guys we're on a roll number 30

got ourselves a nice 1949 here s well take a 49 s it's only our third from the

40s we've got six from the 50s including this pink colored one a Canadian and 3 '09's

not really a great box yet hopefully we find some more cool finds like some

Silver's or a buffalo of a nickel maybe I'll even take a handful more of early

Jeffersons as well of course so let's keep looking

all right guys very next roll roll 31 kinda heating up now we got a 1947

Philadelphia and just a few coins behind it another Canadian 1986 it's odd I

don't get very many Canadians at all got two so far hopefully this box is

starting to heat up now let's keep looking

laughter all the Box guys about the fourth coin name we did get another 40s

coin in 1948 Philadelphia that makes five from the 40's and 13 from the 50s

so that's pretty good we'll finish up this roll see you anything else pops

otherwise I'll give you a full round up same roll guys halfway through the roll

a 1941 as well so that now at least makes six from the 40s all right guys

you finished that box and nickels here we end up with 4 - '09's a couple of

Canadians 13 from the 50s 3 53's and 2 54's and a 55

we got a 56 3 57's and 3 59's and then we also got a couple of 41's, a 47 two 48 and a 49

nothing crazy as far as mint marks

nothing really great-looking most of the coins are pretty circulated so got a lot

of value in the box but still a fun hunting on the last

had it done nickels in almost a month so it had been a while and us itching to do

STOP SLICING YOUR DRIVER PART 1 - Duration: 9:45.

Hi every body Danny Maude here this week we're gonna talk about how to eliminate your

slice for good it's very big subject isn't it you know so many people have

been slicing the golf ball for years and for whatever reason have been unable to

get rid of it this is why this week what I've done I've made it a two-part series

I'm gonna give you two or three things today which will really to start to turn

that slice into it almost a draw but because it's a big series all I'm gonna

do is I'm also going to give you another video which you can access in the link

in the description below which I'll send you over to my website I'll give you

part two but let's get cracking this week I had a client Michael who came to

me with a really big big slice and he'd been trying to draw the ball get the

ball turning right-to-left for years and wasn't able unable to do it so one want

to talk to you about it's exactly how we got him to turn that slice into a draw

just in one session and we did a couple of things which I think you'll find

really beneficial so let's have a look so if you've been trying to get rid of

your slice the chances are you can have understand that a slice is a shot that

starts off to the left for right handers and slices back over to the right-hand

side and what's happening to create that slice well the club as you know is it's

coming outside the line we call the outside the line here it's swinging from

the right to the left so it's swinging this way and the face is actually open

to that swing pass which once the spin which curves it out to the right hand

side now a lot of people know this but they're still unable to kind of get rid

of it so there's a path issues we know I mean there's a face issue show where you

look at this club head here what's telling to happen is that face is like

wide open through the hitting area so what we've got to do is we're going to

deal with the face and we've got to deal with the path so what we're going to do

today is deal with those two things and two things you can simply work on to try

and eliminate that slice really quickly so the first thing I want you to do is

we find that a lot of people who slice or they get to the top of the batting

here there's no activity at all in the lower body it tends to be very upper

body dominated so we get the top here and the upper body simply smooth this is

great over the top of the ball from this angle

it looks like this nobody's not really doing anything and upper body just

simply swings straight across the top of the vault so the first thing we're going

to do today is simply look at helping you to feel what the lower body should

be doing to to get it in sequence so right now if you're if you're coming

over the top here with your upper body is out of sequence the that's moving and

that's not at the poster this should be moving and this shouldn't so what this

looks like from here is this it's better here to have this shape through impact

with your driver okay then this shape so the first thing I want you to do is just

do this just start to move your hips forward and get into what we call right

lateral bend here where you kind of you're hinged into this position here

now that there is a position that no real slicer gets in alright the right

shoulders dipped in just get a sense of that and then make some swings like this

just holding that position it will feel probably pretty strange but if you were

to hit some golf balls just like that you wouldn't start to probably hit a few

to the right maybe why is that a good thing because it's a change in the path

remember if you're a slicer you're coming out to win so we want to start to

change that path we want to start to move the path much more in line here the

path our club this way as opposed to over so the first thing it is feel like

motion their hips forward get the body back and just make some swings like this

backwards and forth I'm just holding that position and then we'll do let's

hit a shot and all I'm gonna do here is this bond

this across for a second here and I'm just gonna make a swing this is not a

promise thing I'm not going to try and do the big long follow-through this is

just you start very small with this and build it up we're just going to bunt the

hit to the left I'm gonna hold that position backwards and forwards and that

ball there sets off to the right hand side very very different now when you're

doing this don't be worried about strike I caught that a little bit thinner on

the way up which is a brilliant thing because most like is it slices caught

that catch their shots on the way down and they often combine a slice sometimes

with the sky so you might even say that see the boss going up in the air that's

because you're coming down to sleep on it so this is all about getting you to

feel this motion here where your hips in a very different position to where they

would love would be there okay now let's work on number two all right

number two the second thing I want you to do here is to start to look at the

face we've talked about the path but let's look at the face I think this is

probably one of the most important bit and this is one of my favorites so what

we want to do is you want to get that face closing down so I think about if

you're slicing it the face is wide open right so and most people to slice it

have never really seen much of that right-to-left shaping in their lives so

we want to get that face closing down as much as possible now a lot of times

you'll see people trying to close their face down but what they're really doing

is closing their body down which creates more of a slice because they can walk

over the top so they're trying to stop it from going over there so they do more

of this what we're gonna do instead is this we're gonna look at getting the

knuckles basically snapping down or turning over very quickly through impact

and we're going to get that feeling it's like a snap of the wrist as opposed to

just a flick of the hands we don't want to see lots of this right it needs to be

a strong flick or a snap here of the knuckles going down to the ground

because watch this if I whip those knuckles down to the ground bang look

what happens now to the face and me it goes but I've still kept the

strength look in the club the club line in my arm yeah I haven't gone like this

which is now a very weak position and you won't hit it very far so we're going

to get that nose knuckle snapping to the ground so from here we're going to swing

it back and snap the knuckles to the ground and notice I'm just again just

working on very small swings we don't to go into big full swings initially too

difficult to learn it that way take your time

snap those knuckles to the ground now when we did this to Michael almost

instantly he got the ball moving right to left and it is so satisfying when you

start seeing that ball move right to left now if you're a slicer as well

you've probably been going out to win as we said from right to left so you might

find that when you do start drawing this it starts off left and goes left that's

fine I'm going to talk to you about how we get rid of that in the second part of

this series but for now if you couldn't start to work on your path and then

snapping those knuckles forward you'll start to see a big difference so let's

have a look at this so what we're going to do here we're going to make a swing

and I'm going to snap those knuckles down to the ground watch this

nice and small back snap those knuckles look at that Bend all because I'm

closing the face by snapping the knuckles down to the ground so there's

two things there that we've done there today what we've done is to look if

you're a slicer you generally come out to in with an open face right so the

path of the club is swinging this way from right to left and the face is open

to that path so we need to start to look at improving those two factors have we

start to improve the path well we said the path of the golf club is often go it

goes out to win because we use only the upper part of the body if we can get the

lower part working a bit better then the path is going to change more from this

position - they're very different right so we started off by going look keep it

simple just move your hips forward hold them there get hit some shots just

holding up position there behind that golf ball hit some small little shots

just getting a feel for that now that's the first thing and then then

we said look let's now work on the path of the air so the face of the club we've

got to get closing down how do we do that really simple we don't want to kind

of turn our hands over or move our shoulders up because that's just going

to cause a very weak shot we're gonna get the knuckles and we're gonna snap

those knuckles down towards the ground start very slowly very easily to start

off with so you can really feel this and that is it that's the first stage on

this two-part series on how to get rid of your slice start with those first and
