Isekai Izakaya Nobu is a story based on a novel and manga, and you're the director.
When you read it, what did you find especially interesting?
That people from this other world really enjoy the menu of a Japanese izakaya.
So I was thinking that when visitors come to Japan for the Olympics,
I want them to go to an izakaya to eat the food that appears on Nobu's menu.
It would be great to show how interesting Japanese food is at izakaya.
Basically I have to give orders, make checks, and talk with everyone
in order for the work to progress.
There is a scenario, a storyboard, a background board,
color finishing and settings from before.
It's a system in which I give instructions.
We also had to buy a lot of tableware.
Actually, when I open my locker, you'll find a lot of plates and so on in there.
Like those in an izakaya?
Not like an izakaya, but we have different kinds and sizes of plates, bowls and chopsticks.
I also have chopsticks of the same size as those used at Izakaya Nobu.
We gave those chopsticks to everyone, like the animators working on cooking sets.
The comparison is easier when, well,
one real chopstick is there.
When it comes to drawing,
it is difficult to get the size of the hand right.
But you can hold the chopsticks in your hand and check.
For example, aji-fry deep-fried horse mackerel...
If you take a piece of paper and fold it like that mackerel...
Wait, to its size?
Yes, exactly!
Then try to actually pick it up with chopsticks...
"Ah yeah, like this!"
Well... You could say I'm "throwing people off."
If I ask to draw something which might seem impossible,
some people get angry.
When someone encounters something in the storyboard that they cannot draw,
they go "How am I supposed to draw this? You can't make a picture like that!"
We had this happen in the past.
Well, to professional animators I say:
"Come on, you'll pull this off."
They'll draw a picture which they never thought could be done.
This "you can draw this" when they're not sure how to proceed
is encouraging the professionals to give it some thought.
Opening up the power or potential of someone,
making them think, is the job of a director, I believe.
The position, the camera angle,
but color is important, too.
It is also about creating an anime "lie."
If you make it look realistic,
it won't fit in with that world.
How to put it... it will look too real.
It won't match the details of the characters.
Sashimi and kaisendon seafood bowls.
We wanted to make them look real, but if they are too real,
it doesn't match the characters, and the color...
well, we made the red fish somewhat dark at first.
And while that was realistic, it was also dark
and didn't look good on screen.
So we had to make the colors brighter.
The first episode's oden was adjusted quite a lot,
so when it was finally completed, we felt happy and relieved!
It was the first episode, so it was a benchmark for everything else.
I think that because of digitization, the schedule is steadily getting shorter.
Maybe even the drawings will all become digital.
Maybe it will be possible to just do everything at once, in the end.
In the end?
Currently, you have to make sketches, the images, the scenario, then the shooting.
For example, if the people doing the sketches could do everything digitally
and it's possible to start drawing with color straight away,
then we would skip two steps of the process.
I see, so it might become possible to shoot it easily like that.
I think that can't be done well at this point, though.
What could happen is having actual videos in between these steps instead of just at the end.
The backgrounds, too... Right now, there's little time for them,
so we end up losing a lot of style. They will end up looking the same.
Why? Because they are used everywhere, that's why there's such a hurry.
However, "it's alright as long as they're beautifully drawn" is a mindset
that will lead to style disappearing more and more.
If digitization keeps progressing,
one regular person could manage things like the image board, for example.
That means the process would be more focused and things could be handled more broadly.
That'd be nice, I think, and also make it more personalized.
Unagi grilled eel maybe?
Right, unagi appears as well.
Yes, the unagi turned out really well.
There's umaki eel egg roll, grilled unagi, uzaku eel and cucumber salad...this one isn't in the original!
I want people to go to an unagi restaurant.
By all means, go to an izakaya yourself
and try the dishes you've seen on Nobu's menu!
And hopefully you'll find them delicious!
Evenin'!
I am Izakaya Nobu's chief, Nobuyuki Yazawa.
This is a regular izakaya, but...
one day, our door suddenly lead to an entirely different world.
It's a modest, heartwarming tale of a little izakaya in the strange world called Aitheria.
We serve delicious dishes and drinks, so why don't you come by sometime?
We look forward to welcoming you.
Isekai Izakaya ~ Koto Aitheria no Izakaya Nobu ~ worldwide simulcast from April 2018!
