Fans of the alien franchise are always eager to hear any news of future aliens movies - now,
maybe more than ever, since the Disney-Fox merger has left many of us wondering what
exactly the future holds.
The last, semi-definitive information we got was from a Ridley Scott interview in October
2017, before the merger, where Scott teased plans of the next film the series, which,
he said, would focus more on artificial intelligence and the androids than the xenomorph creature.
A recent interview has lead many to believe that Ridley Scott still has Xenomorphs on
the mind, and may be open to including the iconic creature more prominently than he originally
let on.
In this interview, Scott doesn't go into any specifics, but rather shares some kind words
about the creator of the alien design, HR Giger, and the impact his creature had on
the film.
Here's what he had to say:
"In my career, which has been pretty long, there's only been, with the greatest respect
for the people I've worked with, two real, real originals.
Funnily enough, I came across a guy called H.R. Giger and if I hadn't got that monster
you would not have had that movie.
I saw the drawing – the drawing was drawn for the book, not the film – and I was so
kind of taken, I flew to Switzerland where he lived because he didn't want to get the
plane as he was scared of flying.
I met him in Zurich at his home and I persuaded him to travel by train to come to England
and live at Shepperton studios for ten months.
And he did.
It wouldn't have been the same movie.
Whilst the cast was wonderful, with Sigourney [Weaver] and Harry [Dean Stanton] and those
people, but without that eighth passenger it wouldn't have been the same film.
What I'm trying to say is that there are rarities, there are those [ideas] that occur
once in the while, not that often, but when they do grab them and hang on to them."
I suppose it's that last comment, about grabbing and holding onto a rare idea that has people
speculating Scott would be more open to featuring the design in movies to come.
Scott had been pretty tranparent when it came to his own concerns about whether or not the
creature had run its course, and wouldn't capture audiences the same way, but demand
to see the iconic monster onscreen again had him reevaluate this position, and of course,
it made its way to Alien Covenant.
The October 2017 interview in which Scott said the xenomorph would be downplayed in
the next film gave cause to believe he had once again been losing confidence in the impact
of the creature on the modern audiences.
It's never been in question how the design impacted the 1979 film, Scott always had high
praise for Giger's design, and certainly defining Giger as one of two "real originals" he's
worked worth, shows a certain kind of reverence Scott still has for the artist all these years
later.
However, in 2018, movies, audiences, and filmmakers are different.
Ridley Scott understands this.
I know many fans are critical of Prometheus and Covenant, but there's something reassuring
about that fact that Scott spends careful consideration on the legacy of the Alien,
and, I would say, he's more protective of it than he is dismissive of including the
design.
While this interview has no concrete information one way or another, I think it gives us an
insight into Ridley Scott's thought process when it comes to including the iconic monster
in future movies.
Having said that, any time Ridley Scott says anything Alien-related, it turns into the
telephone game in a way, where, now, many news sources are claiming, or at least tailoring
their stories to claim, that Scott is now considering using the xenomorph in the next
alien movie and backing off of his previous comments about the series focusing on A.I.
- just based on this interview.
I wouldn't go that far at all, but, it may very well be on his mind.
Do you think Scott will continue with his plans for an A.I.-focused film, or will he
be more open to including the Alien?
Or, do you think with the merger, something completely different will happen?
