Have you ever wondered why you want to cruise on a sailboat?
She can see the wee mooring that we saw the other day when we were swimming.
Until now, our focus has been on crossing the Atlantic Ocean
and getting to the other side.
Next to the, powerboat.
Now we were in Barbados, there was a certain sense of anti-climax.
The Caribbean was certainly a prize, but the journey to get here
was in many ways a larger prize.

One morning, we hopped in the dinghy to head back to Crane Beach.
On the way, I was well overdue for a haircut and this place looked about as safe as any.
Im not sure we met eye to eye on styles though.
So we are going to Bathsheba next
Bathsheba.
What's in Bathsheba?
Its a nice name, and thats all we know.
There is supposed to be something special there.

Bathsheba was a pretty beach on the Atlantic coast but not suitable for swimming.

At Crane Beach the girls were about to meet surf for the first time.
They had been preparing for this, in a way, since way back in Mongolia where they learned
to swim before learning to sail.
Mongolia is a landlocked country, and swimming is not common.
By learning to swim, the girls gained confidence in living with the sea.
Back on the mooring and Tuya is eyeing off the fishing activity all around us
In the evenings boats go spot lighting with a cast net and catch flying fish
We tried to work out what this guy was fishing for.
How do you catch them Tuya?
I just want to know how you catch them?
Bait and hook.
50cm or so there is a weight.
So right on the bottom.
But, what I want to know is he catching big fish or not?

Here is a nice tasty silver morsel for a hungry fish.
Alright.
I dont want to see the lure.
I want to see fish.
The boat had been stationary in Barbados for a week or so.
This had the effect of starving the Goose Barnacles and they were looking a little anemic.
It was an easy matter to remove them from the coppercoat with a kitchen scourer.
After 10 days on the island, and our fishing still rubbish, it was time to provision the
boat for our next adventure, a short 90 mile overnight sail to St Vincent.
We'd ordered a cruising guide book from the US and now it had arrived we were free
to go.
Possibly the shrimps are a better deal.
But what worries me are these fillets.
I'm a bit worried about their name, thats all.
What do you feel when you are leaving Barbados?
What do I feel?
I feel like we are leaving at exactly the right moment.
Barbados was exactly what we expected.
Not in a good way.
Very expensive and commercial, all the way down the West Coast.
But if you want to see the real Barbados, what's left of it....
then from Port St Charles, from 6 Mens, North, around Archer Bay, down to the East Coast.
Very nice.
But sadly Barbados is captured by the dollar God.
Bit sad.
Moving on.
Good.
The day before we left Barbados, we heard disturbing news of the murder of a German
charterer on his yacht at St Vincent.
This changed our plans abruptly and we decided not to cruise the islands outer bays,
opting instead to spend only a couple of days there,
in the security of the beautiful Blue Lagoon.
It has to be said that cruising does not make you immune from Greed and corruption.
Nor does it make you immune from the wealth inequality, poverty, drug abuse and drug related
violence that results from it.
Unfortunately drug trafficking in the Caribbean appears to be on the rise and bringing with
it burglaries and violent crimes.
It's my view that prohibiting drugs leads to far worse consequences and simply doesn't
work, just as it never worked for alcohol during the prohibition days of the 20's
and 30's.
Unfortunately though, the levers for legislative change may be in completely the wrong hands.
Well, behind us Barbados.
We left at 6pm last night.
We had a lovely overnight sail under a clear starry night.
Breeze is 10 to 15 knots, spinnaker up all the way.
Few ships that we crossed, half way across.
Mostly cruise liners all brightly lit.
And there we have St Vincent on the horizon.
The big volcano of Soufriere on the right.
Under the cloud the island, and then our channel is straight ahead.
Into Blue Lagoon.
Where we hope to pick up a marina berth, if not, anchor in the bay.
And then to the left, Bequia,
(pron. Bek'wee)
I think that is the pronounciation, if not its the best I can do.
Which apparently is a sailors paradise, northernmost island of the Grenadines.
And there are volcanic rocks sticking up - Bullet Island
and past that, not visible, is the island of Mustique, playground of the rich and famous.
What is this place, your arriving?
I have no idea honey, its just another island on the horizon.
I dont think we are the first to discover it, judging by the housing on this side.
How do you know its St Vincent.
We just followed all the road signs along the way.
OK, hopefully it is St Vincent.

That place is Bequia

Thats next on our list as we head south towards Grenada.
Do people live there or not?
Pass.
I imagine so, yes.
OK, lots of adventures waiting for us.
Many adventures.
Next thing, now we have got a cruising guide, the next thing we need to buy
is some snorkelling gear.
You can see we have arrived in the Caribbean with very little preparation.
But, we are here, that is the main thing.

I have brought the bow mooring line and the stern mooring line to the back end.
Because the back end is the bit he is going to see first.
So you will be able to pass him both lines from the back end.

Dock master Desmond had called for a reverse berth, starboard side tie, squeezing in, right
in front of the restaurants.
Just what you need to get the heart rate up.

1.2 ohhh, 4 ft.
As it turned out, docking the Wharram could not be easier.
With two engines in the middle of the boat and clear vision all around,
its an easy matter to put the boat where you want it.
At the beginning of this video I hinted that its the journey,
not the destination that matters.
With the tragic incident at St Vincent, that certainly felt true.
Things look up next week when we discover a spiritual home on the Island of Bequia,
a sailors paradise.
What we do after that with our videos – well, we want to ask you.

A. continue with the Caribbean story to Grenada?
Or B. Re-wind the clock and travel to Mongolia and South Africa,
to where our challenge and our journey began?
