RICHMOND, Va. — One afternoon in the early 1990s, a middle schooler showed up at Frank E. Emory Jr.s law office in Charlotte, sent there by an aunt who knew Mr. Emory from church. The child, in town visiting relatives, wanted to hear about the law. He had plans.
He said, Im going to run for office, Mr. Emory recalled. I am going to be a leader. I believe that I have something to offer.
Ever since that meeting, Justin Fairfax has been carrying out his plan, steadily and doggedly, becoming lieutenant governor of Virginia by age 38. It had been a starry run — Duke University, presidental campaigns, Columbia Law School, a United States attorneys office. Then, days ago, Mr. Fairfax was on the cusp of becoming Virginias next governor, the second black governor in Virginia history, as Gov. Ralph Northam reeled from a scandal over a racist yearbook picture.
But Mr. Fairfaxs ever upward career trajectory suddenly took a sharp turn. Two women have come forward with detailed allegations that he sexually assaulted them, one in a fraternity house at Duke University in 2000 and the other in a hotel room at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
He allegedly committed the assaults during some of the most formative years of Mr. Fairfaxs ascent, when classmates were sure he was on his way to a powerful career in politics. One of the accusers did not tell the authorities at the time, her lawyer said, partly because Mr. Fairfax was a politically influential figure on the Duke campus.
Now, some who knew Mr. Fairfax are wondering how well they had really known him all along.
Democratic leaders and lawmakers have called for Mr. Fairfax to resign; him to step down from a board position; the law firm where he works ; half of his staff has resigned. Though Mr. Fairfax has denied the allegations and may survive in his current term in office, the likelihood of winning a future election is dim in a Democratic primary and even dimmer in a general election, said Larry J. Sabato, the director of the University of Virginias Center for Politics.
Summing up his chances now in electoral politics, Mr. Sabato said: Obliterated.
In a statement Tuesday, Lauren Burke, Mr. Fairfaxs communications director, said, Mr. Fairfax has asserted consistently that he has never sexually assaulted anyone ever. He has called for an independent and impartial investigation of the allegations against him and said that he looks forward to cooperating fully and completely with any such investigation.
Mr. Fairfax seemed innately meant for politics. He was president of his class at DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland. He then went on to become president of his fraternity chapter at Duke, as well as president of the National Pan Hellenic Council, an organization of black fraternities and sororities.
The running joke was hes going to be the first black president, said Marlon Meade, who knew him at Columbia Law School. Obviously somebody beat him to that.
At Duke, he majored in public policy, giving a speech at graduation in which he spoke of the deep passion and commitment to making our collective public life the absolute best that it can possibly be.
Elisabeth Epps, a lawyer and criminal justice activist who went to Duke with Mr. Fairfax, remembered him as a big man on campus whose ambitions were well known. The chatter was, would he be governor of North Carolina or Virginia? she said.
It was at Duke that Mr. Fairfax got to know Meredith Watson, a student two years behind him who had dated one of his friends. She became part of a vibrant social circle surrounding the fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha, the only black fraternity at Duke that had its own house — and where Mr. Fairfax served as president.
Ms. Watson, in statements released by her lawyer, Nancy Erika Smith, has accused Mr. Fairfax of a premeditated and aggressive sexual assault that took place in the Alpha Phi Alpha house during spring break in 2000, the year Mr. Fairfax was to graduate. According to Ms. Smith, who has not released specifics of the sexual assault, the pair had never dated and did not have a romantic relationship.
Ms. Epps recalled Mr. Fairfax, whose campaigns she supported and whose wedding she attended, as kind and as only a gentleman to her. But she believes Ms. Watson, because she knew her and the other women who have corroborated her story.
A Duke professor, impressed by Mr. Fairfaxs political talent, helped him land a job out of school on Al Gores 2000 presidential campaign, compiling briefing books for Tipper Gore.
There are some 22 year olds you look at and say, Im going to working for this person some day, recalled Jeremy Bash, who was an adviser on the Gore campaign. Justin was that guy.
From there, Mr. Fairfax returned to Washington and worked in the office of Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, answering constituent mail and doing research. Then it was on to Columbia Law School, where he made Law Review and developed a reputation as a man who always remembered first names and was ready to help out by making connections.
Not like rich kid connected, said Mr. Meade, his classmate, but more connected than you would expect.
During the summer of 2004, before his third year of law school, Mr. Fairfax worked for a few weeks on the Kerry Edwards campaign as a body man to Mr. Edwards, the personal aide who traveled with the candidate. It was hardly the stuff of high policy, but it did get him a ringside seat at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston.
At the convention, he met Vanessa C. Tyson, a political scientist. Dr. Tyson, released last Wednesday, said that she became friendly with Mr. Fairfax at the convention and one day he asked her to walk to his hotel room with him on a quick errand to pick up some documents. As she stood in the entryway of his room, she said, he kissed her, then pulled her toward the bed. As I cried and gagged, he forced me to perform oral sex on him, her statement said.
Mr. Fairfax returned in the fall to finish law school, and afterward clerked for a federal judge. He spoke to everybody: the people in the cafeteria, the people that do the trash, recalled the judge, Gerald Bruce Lee, who is now retired. A standard legal career followed: a stint at WilmerHale, a big Washington law firm, and then work as a federal prosecutor in the United States attorneys office in Virginias Eastern District.
And in 2012, to the surprise of nearly no one who knew him, he decided to run for attorney general of Virginia.
Mr. Fairfax, who was an unknown to Virginias political class, wanted to run for attorney general, an ambitious goal for a complete political novice but one in keeping with his work as a prosecutor. The post was also sought by Mark Herring, a two term state senator. It was a longshot, and in the June 2013 primary, Mr. Herring won by fewer than four points.
Mr. Herring, who is facing a scandal of his own after admitting last week to wearing blackface in college, ran for re election four years later, but this time Mr. Fairfax won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. He defeated two candidates who were arguably more seasoned, including Gene Rossi, a longtime Justice Department prosecutor who helped train Mr. Fairfax during his two year stint as an assistant United States attorney.
Mr. Rossi remembers some of Mr. Fairfaxs cases — a cash smuggling prosecution that went to trial, bank robbery and drug prosecutions, as well as some alien re entry cases.
I was disappointed when Justin left the U.S. attorneys office after just two years because of my firm belief that he had a very promising future, Mr. Rossi said.
During the general election, Mr. Fairfaxs opponent, Jill Vogel, attacked him for his lack of experience, suggesting he wasnt sufficiently informed to discuss issues.
Mr. Rossi, now a lawyer in private practice in Washington, held a large fund raiser for Mr. Fairfax during the general election and has remained close to him. The next day, Dr. Tysons allegations emerged. Mr. Rossi, who said he could not ignore the disturbing accounts, has not been in touch with Mr. Fairfax since.

When you go to a hospital in America
you meet nurse practitioners a lot of times.
They are also professional nurses.
They can do what doctors do
a lot of times.
When you sleep well
people say 'sleep like a baby'.
If you have a baby, you would know
they don't sleep at night!
One of the biggest issues that drives parents crazy.
Parents wish their babies sleep through the night.
Sleep well = sleep like a baby.
Really? (Sigh)
How ironic!
When your alarm starts
people say 'go off'.
If you think about a switch
'off' means turning it off.
But when the alarm starts, people say 'go off'.
I don't know why these expressions became this way.
There might be behind stories, or not.
People get stressed when they can't understand something.
Languages existed before dictionaries and grammar books.
Those books were written after languages were developed.
Whether they make sense or not
if people use them, they become rules.
So don't try to understand everything.
Native speakers say these expressions.
Just accept it for your peace of mind.
Even something you can't understand on your level
just accept it. It's better for you that way.
That's how I deal with it.

it's not good for studying English.

Hold your Restaurant Staff Accountable - Duration: 9:04.
You ever feel like you're always checking up on your restaurant employees
and they're never doing the things that you want them to do
or at least not on a regular basis,
I've got a solution for you coming up.
It's called Cadence of accountability.
The following video is filmed with a new camera
and had a strange auto zoom feature turned on.
So some of the shots are really, really close to my face.
It's totally awkward and I'm sorry. But the contents worth it.

about something that is so crucially important.
When I share this with clients
literally the next phone call we have,
they say things like, "That completely changed everything."
Or that's life changing
or I can't believe, I wasn't doing this before.
But there's a reason they weren't doing it before
and I'm gonna get to that in a second.

But let's talk about Cadence of accountability.
So here's the thing.
We're human beings, we're all human beings.
We're lazy by nature.
We're forgetful. We have our own personal agendas.
And usually, if you're the owner, the manager,
your agenda is very different than your employee's agenda.
So how do we get our employees to do the things that we need them to do.
Maybe you're having trouble getting your restaurant closed properly
or open properly
or getting the prep done or all of the above and many others
that are not even listing here.
But here's the thing I often hear from managers.
They say things to me like,
"Well, I'm sick and tired of being such a babysitter for my staff."
And my reply to that is alway, "You are a babysitter".
That is your job almost literally, by definition,
a manager's job is to babysit.
To may sure things get done.
But the challenge is,
is that we focus on something like,
maybe as a manager, your owner says to you,
"This, this needs help!"
So that you work on that for a week and it gets better.
But then the next week you go somewhere else
and you go somewhere else,
what you haven't developed
is what's known as the Cadence of Accountability.
I don't think we need to get into the definition of accountability.
But let's talk about cadence really quick.
The best definition I have for cadence, if you're not a bicycle rider,
then you probably, maybe never use this word or heard of the word.
But it's rhythm. In bicycle riding, think of it like RPMs in your cars.
See bicycles or you know competition bikes, like speed bikes, road bikes have gears
that you could change obviously, if you're going up a hill or down a hill.
Because it gets harder or easier to pedal.
The idea though is that over a long distance,
we don't want the cyclist to constantly be changing the rhythm
that they're pedaling
'cause they'll get tired too quickly
and they won't make it to the end of the race or vice versa.
They'll have energy left in the tank, when it comes to the end of the race
that they should have used earlier.
So bicyclists train on something called Cadence,
which is their rhythm for cycling
so they know how long they have that energy for
and then they use the gears to adjust.
So the goal of a cyclist is to keep the same pedal going.
The same pace, the same cadence and then adjust your gears.
So it's basically, rhythm.
I want you to think of accountability as rhythm.
If you don't have a Cadence of Accountability as a manager or an owner in your restaurant,
you're gonna constantly be chasing after the things
that you need to get done.
But if you develop a cadence to your accountability
to the things that are important to you,
you'll start to see them getting done.
So yes, your job is to be a babysitter.
As an owner, your job is to babysit your manager.
As a manager, your job is to babysit your employees.
So get over it.
And there is a link,
I'll put it below this video
to a video that I did about a year, year-and-a-half ago,
about just that topic of babysitting
but here's the thing,
with this cadence, one of my favorite tips
for owners or managers
is set a reminder in your phone, right.
We all keep a smart phone on us.
So one of my managers or one of the owners that I worked with,
sorry, was having trouble getting his managers
to close down the restaurant properly
and make sure that their staff was doing the things
they were supposed to do.
We had the checklist in place.
We've refined the checklist, the checklists are great.
But the managers weren't checking out the staff.
So what the owner did, 'cause the owner would usually leave the restaurant
about 8:30 or nine O' clock
but the the managers and the employees would leave about 10:30.
So at ten O'clock, he set a reminder on his phone to go off
and he would call the manager
every single night at ten O'clock and just say,
"How is the closing going?".
And then would say something along the lines of,
you know, "How's the closing going?
Make sure, I noticed the walk-in was pretty messy
that we give it a little extra attention."
And would you mind just sending me a picture
of the walk-in, before you go home.
That's it. Just a 30 second phone call.
How the night end up?
You know, make sure that the walk-in gets some extra attention.
How's the closing going?
Will you send me a picture of the walk-in?
And just by making that one phone call now,
every single night he makes that phone call,
his restaurant is spotless
and all the employees are doing what they're supposed to be doing.
Because he is letting the manager know,
this is important, don't forget to do it.
And so now the manager is staying on top of the staff
and all it took was that 30 second phone call.
Maybe its financials or numbers that you need in your restaurant.
You want to get your food costs on a weekly basis.
Well, first question is do you have the tools to do that?
Second question is what's your cadence?
Do you expect those numbers to be on your desk
every Monday or every Tuesday?
And what are those numbers, is it clearly defined?
If you want certain numbers on your desk every Tuesday morning,
then on Monday, send out a text message or an email
or just a phone call or a quick conversation every single Monday
with the people who are supposed to do this for you and just remind them,
"Hey, hope you had a great weekend. Don't forget tomorrow by 9 a.m.
I want to have all those numbers on my desk."
Just those simple reminders, that accountability,
holding people accountable for the things
they're supposed to be doing
will have huge effects on your business and your culture.

The culture that you want in your restaurant.

look okay so to get started with our easy glam drugstore Valentine's Day look
what you're going to need is just some basic stuff okay so first thing I'm
going to be starting out with is the makeup revolution fiercest fire pellet
okay so I don't think I've ever used this on camera but it's a really really
beautiful eyeshadow palette okay so I think I'm gonna go ahead and just start
out with one of the matte shades so I'm gonna go ahead and I think I'm gonna
start with this shade right here and I'm just gonna go ahead and gently
put that in my crease you ever tried makeup revolution shadow palettes they
are amazing so I'm obviously already had my foundation on I already have brows
concealer powder I already got all that on because you can do whatever skin
steps you'd like I always do my eyes first but just to I don't know look a
little bit nicer on camera eye I've been starting to do the foundation and stuff
first but just building up a nice kind of rosy transition but I wanted to do a
nighttime look just because I see so many really pretty kind of daytime looks
and guys if you don't know me hi I'm Kim and I love heavy dark makeup absolutely
love it okay guys I'm gonna go ahead I'm gonna
go into this really pretty kind of burgundy wine color and I'm just gonna
use a little bit of that it picks up great on a brush and I'm just gonna get
that started working into the crease so guys I would love to know what are some
of your guys's plans for Valentine's Day I work mine and Shawn's anniversary is
on the 15th actually so we just always combined the two so okay so I think
that's a really pretty blend so what I'm gonna do now is there's like this really
pretty like slightly like satin shimmery okay it's kind of like a nice bobby
shade so I'm just gonna go ahead and apply that to my lid I'm gonna go back
in and gently blend and buff and stuff just so that way I can get a nice nice
seamless blend
I love applying shimmers with my finger just because I think you get the most
impact that way but if you like to use a brush then go ahead and do that okay I'm
gonna go in and get back into that burgundy wine shade I'm just gently
gonna place it on my outer corner just to make this a little bit more cohesive
but this is a really easy look you can use Purple's Pink's whatever color
combination Browns whatever color combos you want to use you can do this same
kind of look with whatever colors you want but but it makes the eyes it just
it's a beautiful color combo okay then right above here
okay so this shade right here this one is a lot more metallic and a little bit
lighter I'm gonna go ahead and gently place that on the inner portion of my
eye just to add some nice highlight
but really really pretty and then I'm just gonna dip back into that first
metallic or shimmer shade we went into and I'm just gently gonna Pat over that
edge so that way it's a nice blend okay so now what I'm gonna do next I'm just
gonna make sure this is all buffed out guys this is where the smokiness is
gonna come in okay so I've got my top part of my eye done upper lid so now the
switch brushes and I'm gently going to dip into this metallic shade right here
and I'm just gonna place that right underneath the brow just as a little bit
of a highlight once again this is for evening or if you're like me I'm aware
nighttime makeup anytime okay guys but now I am going to grab a black kohl
pencil this is from Rimmel this is the scandalised 24 hour in black and I'm
going to do my waterline and tightline so that way it's nice and smoky and
intense
look at just what a difference just I have no liner actually on my lid it's
just in tight lining okay so now guys we are going to work on the bottom lash
line I've got two different little smudgy brushes here okay so I'm gonna go
in with my smaller one and I'm gonna pick up that same wine shade right there
and make sure I tap off as much excess and we're just gently gonna give this
started smoked out
I like a really smoky lower lashline but if you don't want to go this intense you
don't have to I just think it's really really pretty okay so next one I'm going
to do is I'm gonna pick up some I'm gonna mix this pink shade that we put on
the inner portion of the lid and I'm also going to mix it with a tiny bit of
this white and I'm going to place it on my inner my inner tear-duct
once again just to really make that exaggerated pop
okay so now guys I am going to hop on camera I'm gonna do the other eye when
we get back I will do the face lips all that jazz okay guys so I have both eyes
done and I did pop on some mascara I used the Milani run wait lashes I will
link everything that I used down below including my foundation and powder and
all that stuff okay but guys let's go ahead and move on with the face okay so
I'm going to be using the BH Cosmetics nude rose sculpting glow palette kay so
this comes with like a banana powder highlighter bronzer contour blush all
that jazz so guys I'm going to be using the contour and bronze are out of here
okay and the blush yeah so I'm gonna be using a different highlighter so I'm
just gonna go ahead and I'm gonna dip into the contour shade right here and
I'm just going to pinch my little brush and gently sculpt okay I'm now going to
just dip into the bronzer on the same brush and gently bronze out the
perimeter of the face
Hey changing brushes I'm gonna dip into this really pretty kind of salmon pink
shade brush off the excess Hey now it's going to move on to highlighter
and guys if you've been watching my channel for a while you already know
this is one of my favorite formulas and guys I'm gonna be using the wet and wild
main glow highlighting powder in blossom glow this is an intense high shine
metallic highlight and once again since this is kind of a more dramatic look I'm
gonna be piling it on just just morning yet
last thing that we have is we have lips and guys you can definitely go nude it'd
be absolutely stunning with a nude lip shade but guys I'm gonna go ahead and
I'm going to be using a deep berry I'm gonna be using the makeup revolution
lipstick and totally not boring you guys ready for this heck yes let's go and get
this done there you go guys we are done guys once again this is an over-the-top
bold nighttime Valentine's Day look if this is not your cup of tea
definitely go light on the eyes go light on the lips guys whoever you're spending
Valentine's Day with whether it's with your your husband your wife your
boyfriend your girlfriend your partner your friends they love you they love
being around you and they're not gonna care what your makeup looks like they're
really not but if Valentine's Day is one of the few times you get to like go
dress up and go overboard this is the perfect time to do that I absolutely
