Kensuke: ...
I opened my eyes so fast it almost made a sound.
Kensuke: Whew. I've been waking up surprisingly easily lately.
It's been almost a month since I've arrived to this world.
I was initially sleeping at Kuon's mansion, but at the same time as Kensuke squad was formed, they made a residence for our squad, so I'm living on my own lately.
By the way, the room I'm sleeping at is the most luxurious in the residence, it feels no different from the one in Kuon's mansion. I'm kinda grateful for it.
Kensuke: Cooking is not that big of a problem, but when it comes to breakfast...
I wake up from hunger and there's no breakfast... that feels pretty sad and makes me realize I've been spoiled by a lot of people before.
Kensuke: But, I guess I can manage even without electronics.
Sure, it feels inconvenient, but it's kinda fun to challenge myself and live despite that inconvenience.
Living here might be pretty fitting for me, surprisingly.
Kensuke: Okay, I should go wash my face.
Hiyoko and Koroko: Boss! Good morning.
Kensuke: Good morning... you two are pretty early.
As I approached, talking to them, Koro fetched some water with a rattling sound.
As I washed my face with that water, Hiyo gave me a towel.
Kensuke: Thanks... whew.
Washing my face with a cold water and wiping it with a clean towel. Little things like that make me happy.
Kensuke: Okay, I'm awake now... did you two have a breakfast yet?
Hiyoko: Not yet. We got paid yesterday, so we were just talking with Koro-chan about going out to eat somewhere.
Kensuke: Oh. Then, can I come too?
Koroko: Yay. Please do.
Kensuke: Thanks. Then, just let me get ready first.
I say get ready, but it's just putting katana on my waist. I'm still a samurai (considered to be at least), so I need to have it on me all the time.
It's bothersome, but can't be helped. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
I picked up katana from my room's floor and put it at my waist.
Koroko: Where should we have breakfast?
Kensuke: The diner is our best option.
Hiyoko: That's right! Aah, which set should I get today?
As Hiyo was lost in her own imagination, since everything tastes equally good, from behind her...
We heard horseshoes and neighing of a horse.
Kensuke: What's that? Did something happen?
Koroko: Judging by that horse, it's an urgent message...
Kensuke: Right. Okay, let's go check it out before breakfast.
Hiyoko: Aah, my breakfast...
Koroko: Come on, don't sound so miserable. Let's go, Hiyo.
Hiyoko: Hee... okay...
Wakana: Hey, Kensuke!
Hina: Good morning, Kensuke-kun.
As we approached the castle with a starving Hiyo, Wakana and Hina called us out from behind us.
Kensuke: Good morning. You two are pretty early... were you called here because of that messenger?
Wakana: We weren't exactly called. I was walking to have a breakfast at the diner with Hina, when we spotted that messenger, so we decided to check it out.
Hina: That messenger came from the direction of Mino, it seems. It's possible it'll be our time to shine.
Kensuke: Mino, huh... after we built a castle at Sunomata, they haven't been doing much, right?
Wakana: That's right. That's why I'm thinking it's about time!
Hina: Well, we might figure things out if we go to the meeting room.
Kensuke: Right. Then, let's go.
As we followed Wakana to the meeting room, we saw two of Oda chief retainers sitting there already.
Wakana: Ah, Mitsuki-sama, Mugiho-sama, sup.
Hina: You two are pretty early.
Mitsuki: Oh, it's two idiots and Kensuke squad. Perfect timing. I was about to call for you.
Wakana: We're not idiots, we're youngsters, we're Youngster Trio of Oda! So, did something happen? #Baka - idiot. Waka - youngster#
Mitsuki: Right. There was some change at Mino. Our lord is recieving information from the messenger right now.
Kensuke: Change at Mino, huh... is that the messenger from Sunomata?
Mugiho: We haven't heard anything about that matter.
Kensuke: So, the chance of it being an invasion at Owari is pretty low...
From Mino to Owari, there's a surprisingly limited amount of routes for an army to pass.
If it's not a messenger from Sunomata, it's not an invasion towards Owari, but a different matter.
Kuon: I see you're all here. #It's nice to see CG changing with Hiyo and Koro sitting there now.#
Mitsuki: Yes. But one of the three youngsters is not here yet.
Hina: Ah, Wanko is still sleeping.
Kuon: Right. Well, let her sleep. It's not an urgent matter.
Mugiho: Then, lord. What news did that messenger from Mino bring?
Kuon: That's... I'm not quite sure.
Wakana: Eh?
Hina: I'm not sure what you mean by saying you're not sure.
Kuon: To be precise, it's news that make me ask myself "Is that really possible?".
Hina: What do you mean?
Kuon: Right. I'll explain that.
Kuon: We got notice from our spy at Mino... and its contents are...
Kuon: It appears Inabayama castle was captured by someone.
Mitsuki: ...What?!
Wakana: W, w, wait a bit! Inabayama castle is a strong fortress said to have heavenly sturdiness.
Hina: Houjou's Odawara, Echigo's Kasugayama, and Mino's Inabayama castle... Well, there's plenty of other castles said to be impregnable.
Wakana: And someone captured that impregnable fortress? ...I... it's not making any sense, and I'm also not making any sense. I feel dizzy.
Hina: Wakana, cut it down on confusion.
Kuon: It appears that kusa doesn't know all the details himself yet, the report only said... that it seems so.
Kensuke: Now that's an unclear report... is there anything else?
Kuon: We know the scale of the squad that captured it.
Mugiho: To capture that fortress in no time, it should've been attacked by quite a giant army.
Kuon: No, it was around sixteen people.
Mitsuki: What?!
Hiyoko: C, capturing Inabayama castle with sixteen people... that's definitely impossible.
Koroko: True. Just how did they do that?
Mugiho: I'm also curious about how they did it. But it's more important to know who did it.
Kuon: That's right. We have no info about the culprit... Kensuke, will you investigate?
Kensuke: Sure. I believe this is right up our Kensuke squad's alley.
While Kensuke squad was officially formed, we don't have enough funds to hire a bunch of footmen.
Sure, there's my fief income (it's kinda like a salary), which I'm using to pay Hiyo and the rest their salary, while the rest is used for various things.
But just hiring around ten helpers for Hiyo and Koro drained my funds almost dry.
That's why we're not being all flashy on the battlefield and focus on the backstage work.
First of all, that kind of work fits me better.
And the job Kuon requested this time is included in that backstage work.
Kensuke: We'll enter Mino and investigate the truth behind Inabayama castle's capture. And investigate the person behind it. And investigate other stuff while we're at it.
Kensuke: Hiyo, Koro, are you up for it?
Hiyoko: Yes!
Koroko: Anytime!
Kensuke: Good. Then, let's have a breakfast and get to preparations... we will return in around ten days, right?
Kuon: Got it. I'm counting on you. Also... Kensuke.
Kensuke: Hmm?
Kuon: Well... yeah. Be... careful.
Kensuke: Thanks. It's okay, I'll return safely.
Kuon: Yeah. I'll be waiting... ah, no, I mean, I'll be waiting for your report!
Mitsuki: (Now that excuse fooled nobody...)
Mugiho: (Well, why not? That's pretty youthful)
Mitsuki: (But it's making me feel itchy)
Kensuke: Yes, yes, I know... I'll be going then.
Kuon: Right...
Mitsuki: I'm not going to ask if he's going to be okay, but Kensuke squad is still pretty small. Will they be okay?
Kuon: For unusual situations like this, it's best for someone with good observation skills to take a look.
Kuon: He knows how to act like a kusa and has good observation skills. He'll get to the truth for sure.
Mitsuki: That's true, but...
Kuon: We need to get ready so we could respond to Inabayama at any time. We'll make our move right away if situation calls, okay?
Mitsuki and Mugiho: Your will.
After we left the castle, we had a late breakfast at the diner.
Our job is simple. Infiltrate Mino, gather information and come back. #And get the best possible reward for a quest ever#
Kensuke: Okay. Then, you two, let's leave right away.
Hiyoko and Koroko: Yes!
Eat at the diner, get ready and head for Mino. We won't be riding there, so it'll take us almost a day of walking.
After eating a late breakfast, we got ready and departed almost right away... and reached Mino by night.
We'll investigate at the morning. Agreeing to that, we went to bed in the inn.
And the next day...
Kensuke: Well then... let's get to work today. Let's check the castle first, and then ask around the town.
Wanko: Okay! Okay, everyone, let's do this! #You're... not Hiyo...#
Hiyoko: Yeah! Wait, no, Wanko-chan?! Are you really going to do this too?!
Wanko: I will. Be it acting like a kusa or anything. I want some serious achievements already.
Kensuke: Achievements, you say. We probably won't get any impressive merit from this job.
Wanko: Eh, really? Huh? Hina said "Kensuke-kun and the rest are heading to Inabayama castle with just the three of them. It's your best opportunity to earn merit"...
Kensuke: I see...
So, Hina inspired Wanko to come as a joke, Wanko took it seriously and tagged along.
Hiyoko: Au, Wanko-chan, so you were worried about us and followed us! #Around this arc, I really started liking Wanko, she's pretty damn nice#
Wanko: Ehehe, it's impossible to take on Inabayama castle with just the three of us. But, don't worry! Wanko's with you!
Hiyoko: Wanko-chan!
Wanko: Hiyo-chan!
It's nice they're hugging and all, but we need to fix this misunderstanding.
Kensuke: Ah, Wanko. We didn't infiltrate Mino to capture the castle, we're here to gather information.
Wanko: Woof?
Kensuke: A messenger has arrived. It was news that Inabayama castle has fallen. We need to find out the truth and who did it. That's our job this time.
Kensuke: So... I'm glad you're helping, but keep a low profile.
Wanko: Oh... and here I was hoping to show Kensuke-sama my great skills.
Kensuke: I'll see it some other time... anyway, we have no time to waste. Let's split up in two groups and gather information.
Koroko: How should we split up?
Kensuke: Wanko and Hiyo will gather information in town. Koro and I will take a look at the castle.
Koroko: Got it.
Hiyoko: Au, I got seperated from boss...
Wanko: It's okay, it's okay. I'll protect you, Hiyo!
Hiyoko: Thank you, Wanko-chan!
Kensuke: I'm leaving Hiyo to you, Wanko... now that groups are decided, it's time to act. We'll meet up back at the inn at night.
Three: Yes! Yes! Yeah!
