"Good evening and welcome in the Heinrich Boell Foundation for the public discussion

AfriqUPrising – Protest- and democracy movements in Africa, a cooperation between the Heinrich

Boell Foundation and the Deutsche Welle.

My name is Claudia Simons and I work in the Africa department of the Heinrich Boell Foundation.

It is good to see so many familiar faces here tonight.

We are having this event at a time when Africa figures quite prominent in the German news:

we hear about "Marshall Plans" and "Compacts with Africa", the potential for economic

growth and investment.

In a nutshell, the idea of Africa rising has definitely reached Germany this year.

However, the event is also taking place at a time when many people in African countries

are taking to the streets to protest against their governments.

Just a few days ago, you might have heard it in the news, 17 people of La LUCHA, a movement

that is protesting against president Kabila in the Democratic Republic of Congo, were

arrested.

Examples like these are many.

We had massive protests in Burundi the last years.

We just showed some pictures by Teddy Mazina, a photojournalist who documented the protests

in Burundi in 2015 and who is here tonight.

We had protests in Ethiopia last year, in the Republic of Congo in 2016 and the Democratic

Republic of Congo since 2016, which are still ongoing.

Just to name a few.

So parallel to the discourse on "Africa rising" we actually see "Africa Uprising".

We do hear about these protests however, mostly when they become violent, when police is clamping

down on the demonstrations, when people get arrested or tortured.

But who are these people protesting?

What are they doing?

What are the visions and how do they organize themselves?

What are their plans and what are the obstacles they are facing?

Who are the people that take to the streets, that blog, twitter, and make their voices

heard in manifold ways and who are not afraid of the

police and state violence?

This is why we are here tonight.

I am very happy to you Dr. Dirke Köpp who will lead us through the evening.

Dirke Köpp is the head of the French for Africa Programme at the Deutsche Welle.

Welcome Dirke, the floor is yours" I will start in German, but the discussion

later on will be in English.

As Claudia Simons just introduced me, my name is Dirke Köpp and I am the head of Deutsche

Welle's French for Africa service.

We produce many radio programmes, but also social media, internet and meanwhile even

TV production.

Have a look at our website if you like.

Today we want to talk about something else.

Please let me briefly tell you what can be expected from our event tonight.

First we will watch a short film that was produced for this evening and will premiere

tonight.

It is a short film about the various protests on the African continent in the last view

years.

Of course we can only show some examples and the film raises no claim to completeness.

We picked those protest with the "best pictures".

Because in fact, this is often the biggest problem for media in the international context:

Often there are no pictures of what you want to report about.

After we watched the film, I will welcome the panel and shortly introduce everybody.

We will then discuss for approximately one hour or one and a half hour on the panel.

After that you in the audience are of course welcome to join in the discussion and ask

your questions.

If you wish not only to the panelists, which sat here, but also to the other activists

in the audience, which I want to introduce to you at the end of the panel-discussion.

They all took part in a workshop today and tomorrow

that was organized by the Deutsche Welle and the Heinrich Boell Foundation.

Now let us watch the film first

The protests differ from country to country and from context to context.

The reasons for the protests are many.

The one thing in common is that the people had enough of their life

We will talk about the reasons later on.

I just wanted to mention, that today is a very special day in regard to protests.

Two years ago to the day the protests in Burundi started.

Two years ago to yesterday the president of Burundi announced that he

will run for a third term in office.

Many people saw

that as unconstitutional and the protests began.

Unfortunately the president

still

is in power.

There are 400.000 refugees, of which many went to exile.

Many many who died during or after the protests, which

is sad and we are going to talk about that today with one of the panelists

Como Pintar: CYPHER - How to paint (ENG-Sub) - Duration: 29:47.

Greetings Wargamers & Players, Welcome to MiniatureWar, I'm Meinkopt and in this painting guide we shall give color in an easy and quick way to Cypher.

To make the painting easier in this miniature, I recommend to not have it all ensambled, just leave the pistol and the bag without mounting, so you can ensamble it later.

We start with the armor.

For this we shall use a black tone for the layer base, for this you can use Abaddon Black.

With the armor completely painted with the black base, we give it a little of light and profile. We have two options here, we can leave the armor with the base color and simply profile the edges or we can create a degrade with a fictitious light

This last step it's the one that I choose and the result it's a less darker armor.

To create thte degrading we simply start adding a gray tone little by little to the base black color until we see how the black start to subtly lighten.

Now we're trying to profile the edges of the armor. For this we take the gray tone that we choose before and with a fine point brush we go over again some of the edges of the miniature.

The idea it's that not all the edges get the same color, so the zones where we can assume that's more light there's where the edge will get more highlight with more sharpness.

For now we leave the armor and start painting the cape that he's wearing. In this part it's more complicated because there's a risk that we can damage the earlier work, therefore we have to be very careful and I recommend a fine and long point brush.

We start with the interior that's going to be in a red tone and we shall take advantage to paint the symbols of the armor and sword that everything are in the same color too.

For this we use a layer base of Khorne Red.

With the Khorne Red dried, we start now to get the color up to give volume and light.

For this we first mix the base with Mephistone Red and give it a soft brushstroke to every zone except the ones that are more dark. We try to use always diluted paint for this, the more diluted it will melt better with the base and with patience we can create a more soft transition to the more vivid tone.

Little by little we shall paint it until we get to Mephistone Red in the more vivid zones.

To finish the reds, we start a mix with Mephistone Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet and do the same the thing that we did in the last step, getting the tone up little by little.

Now we work in the exterior part of the cape. For this we give a layer base with a mix o Leather Brown from Army Painter and Ushabti Bone. We apply this mix to all the exterior cape. Then we add more Ushabti Bone to the mix to start getting the tone of light up and the volume. We only stop until we are satisfied with the results.

We have to remark that this mix will give us the effect of bone in the cape, if you want it more white, it's recommendable to work with a layer base of Rakarth Flesh mixed with Steel Legion Drab and create light with Rakarth Flesh and White Scar.

Now we proceed to paint all the metal zones, for this we use a layer base of Leadbelcher mix it with Abaddon Black. When everything it's dried then we give some strokes with Nuln Oil.

To iluminate once the shade it's dried we use Ironbreaker Armor and if we want to get the light really extreme then in some zones we can use Runefang Steel.

For the leather protector of the forearm, we mix Steel Legion Drab with Rinox Hide for the layer base in equal parts. Then we get the light up adding a little more of Steel Legion Drab to this base and profile it with Steel Legion Drab mixed with Ushabti Bone.

Some parts of this old plasma pistol will be painted in bronze tones. For this we use for the layer base Warplock bronze. Then we give it a wash with Nuln Oil and we iluminate later with Hashut Cooper. If you want to add a little effect like worn out, then you dilute some Sotek Green and apply over the zones. Then illuminate it a little with Hashut Cooper.

For the plasma generator, we give a layer base with Caledor Sky and apply the light with Temple Guard Blue.

For the rest of the symbols of the armor, we proceed to give a layer base with Celestra Grey and adding White Scar until we get the point of white that you like.

For the handle of the sword, and the case of the bullets we use gold tones.

With a layer base of Balthasar Gold, then we add a wash with Agrax Earthshade. Once the tint it's dried, then we iluminate it with Gehenna gold, then we mix it Auric Armor Gold to give it more intensity. The final points of light will be by mixing Ironbreaking Armor with Auric Armor Gold.

For the skin of the face we start using a dark tone like Doombull Brown.

Then with this base we add little by little Cadian Fleshtone to create all the features of the face. Then we finish it adding Ushabti Bone to the mix to create the final tones.

If you wnt to add a little of the effect of shaved beard, just add to the mix a gray tone and apply it lightly.

And with this shorts steps and a little time, Cypher will be ready to keep showing that he's imposible to trap.

Cleaning Lady? I'm a Cleaning Specialist! - Duration: 4:50.

Hi there, I'm Angela Brown and this is Ask a House Cleaner.

This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question,

and I get to help you find an answer.

Today's question comes from a girl who is livid.

The homeowner that hired her keeps referring to her as "The Cleaning Lady"

"And that is politically incorrect..." and she's not taking it.

She wants to call herself a Cleaning Specialist.

And how can she "convince this customer that she's a cleaning specialist and not

the cleaning lady?"

So, (laughing) this is going to sound very disrespectful and I don't mean it this way,

I come from a place of love.

So please forgive me.

It really doesn't matter.

It really doesn't matter.

As long as the lady is paying you, she can call you whatever she wants to call you.

Whether you're a cleaning specialist, whether you're a cleaning connoisseur, whether you're

the cleaning lady, whether you're a cleaning technician, whether you're a maid, whether

you're a housekeeper it doesn't matter.

Right?

When she's talking to her friends and she gives them a referral and says "Oh I've got

the best cleaning lady in the world, you should hire my cleaning lady."

Are you going to get upset and go "I'm not a cleaning lady, I'm a house cleaning specialist."

No.

You're not going to do that.

You're going to say "Thank you very much for the referral."

And you're going to go over and you're going to clean this ladies house.

The title that she gives you has nothing to do with the job that you do.

Right?

As long as she knows that it means house cleaning.

And as long as you know that she knows, that it means house cleaning.

When she sends you a referral as the cleaning lady, to her friend, you can go over and clean

their house.

You know what it means, she knows what it means, who cares?

Right?

In our society, we get really tangled up with the roles that we play.

And the titles that we have on our business cards.

And the reality is no one cares.

No one really cares.

What cares, and what matters is how are people going to find you?

And so if they are on the search engines, they are on Google, Bing, Yahoo or whatever.

And they're looking for a house cleaner in my neighborhood, if you are a cleaning connoisseur

they're not going to find you.

Those words did not pop up in "house cleaning."

The search engine did not guess that you were a house cleaner or a cleaning lady.

It didn't find you.

So if you're going to do this business correctly, (this is going to sound super weird)

but use them all.

Use those terms interchangeably.

Refer to yourself as a cleaning lady and a cleaning specialist and a cleaning connoisseur

and a cleaning technician and a house cleaner and a maid and a housekeeper and all these

different terms.

Because somewhere in that mix the search engine will find you and it will say "Hey, wait a

second, I think there's this person right here in your neighborhood that I could send

to you as the best user experience.

Because this person is all these things.

I think this is what you're looking for.

But if you are married to one particular title and somebody's looking for something close

they're going zoom right on by because your title didn't fit in with exactly their

search term.

Right?

So, there are battles to fight, and the title that someone calls you as far as what it is

you do, it doesn't really matter.

If I were hiring a painter off the internet, what is the search term I would use?

House painter?

Maybe he likes to call himself a painting specialist, that's fine.

But I'm looking for a house painter.

I want someone to come paint my house.

I mean, (laughing) the terms that we search for are very simple.

And as a result of that, that's how people are going to find us.

So don't get upset, this is not high school, this is not where people call us names and

we get all offended and everything, we're all grown-ups.

You run a business.

Who cares what they call you?

They could call you something heinous if they wanted to.

But the fact of the matter is if they're paying you money and it's for you to clean their

house, who cares?

It really doesn't matter.

So get over that already.

Now, that's my tip for the day, I hope that you're not offended.

It's not intended to offend, it's intended to help.

IBM Watson, Blue Spark Client Engineer, Reece Medway - Duration: 4:13.

Hello Nina, I'm Reece from IBM Watson UK. I'm a service specialist, who focuses on Watson conversation.

So, we are here today in the IBM design studio.

We're here looking at how our teams work using Watson to create ideas, apply design thinking methodologies and help clients to build a cognitive system.

In IBM we work in a project team fashion. We support each other by working through the various different software approaches that we've got.

We form stream teams. We work using agile methodology and we apply a lot of design thinking practice.

So, each team that you'll be able to see today works in a direct project. They're usually six months at a time.

They work all together to pull in all the various parts of IBM to accorporate the goal for the customer.

The best advice that I can give to a startup to help them create the best bot for the future would be to really focus on delivering quality.

At the moment, there's a hell of a lot bots out there. There's around 80'000 on Messenger.

But some of them are not as good as others. I would really say: "Focus on the personality and make something that's really useful.

The biggest challenge I've come across with Watson so far is because it's just so big.

It's a very big project to undertake for a business. So what we've been doing with IBM is, we've broken this up into a lot of APIs.

So, we've split this Watson project into 26 APIs that user are able to pull in and really pick up the parts of Watson that they want to build with.

So, almost like Lego building blocks you're able to determine what you want to build with and how.

A good question that we often get is, how do bots fit into the future. Are they going to replace human jobs?

I tend to take the approach that bots are really going to augment jobs. So, they're going to help people do their job better.

Ultimately, jobs that rely on information may find themselves shifting their approach in terms of what their roles entails.

With a bot the person who would usually feed the information to a user would probably be assisted by the bot and their job would be to maintain that bot itself.

It's not necessarily a replacement, but it's more of a shift in job role and responsibility.

In the moment, we're already seeing a shift in the market where there are jobs being advertised now for personality and conversation analysts.

So, IBM in our research labs in Hursley, we've already employed two conversational analysts, whose job it is to determine what language should be used in order to guide the customer through the bot in the right way,

how the conversation should be structured in order to prompt the users,

but also, with our design teams here, how the user experience in customer interaction should be handled.

We're really looking at a new job creation in terms of conversation analysts, user experience designers and customer interaction analysts.

The bot adoption that we've seen at IBM has been great. 2017 is definitely the year of the bot.

A lot of organizations, industries and companies are adopting our technologies to make use of this conversational interface.

This conversational approach that they're dealing with their customers.

As an insight for 2017, I would probably say: "Keep an eye on the big, big industries, so banking, retail, and see where bots might pop up in the future."

For HelloNina – Watson is a real great tool that allows you to go on to write, to develop a cloud.

We've got great starter kits that have already been pre-built by IBM that give you a lot of sample code and get hope, they're publicly available.

We've got great documentation that allows you to get started really quick.

But the main thing is that all Watson services are split out into 26 APIs.

That means you're not paying for one big platform that you might not use part of.

You just pick and choose the use in our Lego building blocks – APIs – of the part that you wished to use. That really allows you to be flexible in your approach to cognitive.

What is Smart mobility for companys?

In the fall of 2016 Denmarks largest carpenter company borrowed the Bike Library for 3 weeks.

They wanted to test whether an electric bike could substitute the van on daily trips.

The collaboration with the City of Aarhus have been the catalyst for us.

Without the Bike Library and the knowledge of its existence

I think the possibility of substituting the van with the electric bike would have stayed a mere thought.

My fitness wasn't exactly as good as I thought. So that hasn't been great.

But except that it has been a good experience.

I have had a lot of meetings in the city where it has been really easy just to use my bike.

I haven't had to worry about finding parking for the car and that has been great.

I had a meeting with one of my foremen where we should discuss some work.

We had to meet to see what had to be done and how big the project was.

After the meeting he had to go to another meeting wich meant that he wasn't going back here.

And in that situation it was perfect for me just to take the bike and head straight back here.

It was quick and easy to get to the meeting and back home.

And I didn't have to deal with the usual problems with finding a suited place to park the car.

You lose that psycological factor where you have to worry about traffic.

And more importantly there can be huge problems finding parking in the city.

That barrier is completely gone when you use the bike instead of the van.

Because you always know that you can drop your bike anywhere

And that has actually been the most beneficial part of this experience

Hi today I use glass bottles to create

this cute decoration. For this I use this

bottle and polystyrene ball. I will make

a hole into the polystyrene ball.

Now I will start wrap a bottle with rope

and I will wrap whole bottle with rope.

Now I will do this same with polystyrene ball.

and I will make ears. For this I use

cardboard. I will draw a triangle and

I will cut out a triangle and I have I will

little bit bent the triangle.

and I need to two this same triangles.

and I will wrap triangles with rope too.

and I have ears and I will fix this ears

to the head.

and now it's time to make eyes.

For this I use green foam sheet.

I will cut out the eye and I need two eyes

now a permanent marker and I

will draw eyes.

Now I will make a nose

I leave longer the end and I will wrap rope into a circle.

I will fix a circle with glue

and will fix a nose to the head.

I will fix eyes to the head too.

and now I will fix the end from rope around eye.

I will make eyes more shinny and for this

I use without colour glue.

Now I will braid the rope.

and I will fix this braid rope to

the bottom side of bottle

and from this ends I will make a cat tail

For to make a nice shape I use piece of wire

and I will fix this wire to the braid rope.

and the end I will braid rope with wire.

and last step I will wrap rope with second end.

and I will make a nice end of the tail.

Now I will make the decoration from rope.

I will make a knot and I will wrap the

rope into a circle and I will fix this

circle with glue.

I will do this same from the other side

and here I have decoration. I will cut out ends.

I will fix a cat tail to the bottle. and I will fix

and I will fix this decoration to the bottle.

For decoration I use same flowers.

and last I will decorate the top of bottle with ribbon.

and I put a head on the bottle and here

is my cat.

and I have finished. I make this

decoration cute decoration and I have

COOL English Idiom: Bird's Eye View - Duration: 2:34.

We have an amazing view!

And today, I'm going to talk to you about...

So today I want to talk to you about an idiom

and that idiom is a bird's eye view.

So the meaning of this idiom

is just a view of the surrounding area

from an elevated position

kind of like the perspective of a bird.

Got to get a bird's eye view.

So this is one of those English idioms

whose meaning is pretty much exactly

like it sounds.

Now, there are a couple different verbs that we

commonly use with this idiom.

For example, the verb "to be."

So we could say that there "is a bird's eye view."

So at the top of the mountain, there is a bird's eye view.

We can also use it with the verb "have"

when something "has a bird's eye view".

And I could say that

"Right now I have a bird's eye view of Budapest."

We can also use it with "get".

You hear this from time to time that

when you go up to a certain building

or mountain that you hope to "get a bird's eye view".

So what I want you to do now is

practice using the idiom "bird's eye view".

And I want you to write a sentence using this idiom

in the comments below.
