Hi folks!
Welcome to Gold Beach.
In this beach, at the center of the allied presence,
British troops landed at 07:25 on June 6th.
Bayeux, Arromanches, Port-en-Bessin.
Let's learn about their main targets
and discover how they unfolded.
The sector coded as Gold,
included the coast of Asnelles and Ver-sur-Mer.
Following the military phonetic alphabet, it was divided into Jig and King.
The impact force was the British 50th Infantry Division,
the Northumbrian,
for whom landing in France would be a rematch
that'd reverse the crossing of the canal during the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940.
In front, elements of the German 716th Division, mainly,
but also of the 352nd, wouldn't make it easy.
Let's begin at the coast of Ver-sur-Mer, King sector.
The 69th Brigade landed here.
On the west, the 5th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment,
and on the east, the 6th Battalion, Green Howards.
The German strategy for defending the Atlantic Coast
consisted of containing the enemy at the beaches.
away from the coast, until the arrival of reinforcements; tanks included,
while waiting to find out where the landing would happen.
But the main efforts were concentrated at the beach itself.
The allied infantry couldn't advance without taking these bunkers first.
For example, the 88mm gun inside this casemate
was well protected against naval bombardment
thanks to the thickness of its walls and this wall.
But this gun in King Red lasted just a bit.
A tank of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards Regiment
disabled it briefly after the landing at 07:30.
One of the main objectives at Jig, the other sector,
was to take the town of Arromanches, where a great artificial port called Mulberry
would be built.
Here, the attack fell on the 231st Infantry Brigade
on the west to the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment
and on the east on the 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment.
At Jig, German resistance was tenacious on the western end
known as Le Hamel.
It didn't stop until 16:00.
The situation at the Jig sector's center wasn't much better.
To the surprise of the British Infantry, the bunkers were still standing
despite the aerial and naval bombardments previous to the landing.
It all changed when the tanks silenced the guns,
which allowed the infantry to get out of the beach.
At Gold Beach, the support of the tanks from the 8th Armoured Brigade was vital.
No less important was the presence of some specialized armoured vehicles
christened as Hobart's Funnies.
Major General Percy Hobart, in charge of the 79th Experimental Armoured Division
had developed modifications for several allied tanks
for various labors.
Based mainly off Sherman and Churchill tanks,
Hobart created flamethrower and minesweeper vehicles,
or capable of destroying a bunker.
Also other models capable of getting out of sand
or to create bridges.
Without forgetting about the revolutionary Duplex drive
that through enormous flotation screens would allow the tanks
to float on water.
All of these inventions were seen at the 3 Anglo-Canadian beaches
and were also offered to the Americans.
Besides the defenses at the beach, another threat were the coastal batteries
armed with large guns capable of reaching the boats.
Here, the King sector was threatened by the Mont Fleury Battery,
on top of the hill at Ver-sur-Mer.
When talking about this battery, one must mention Stanley Hollis,
the only soldier to receive the highest British decoration on D-Day
the Victoria Cross.
Sergeant Major Stanley Hollis from 6th Battalion, Green Howards
took the guns out by himself.
This action and others later on, in the village of Crépon,
made him worthy of this medal.
The No.47th Commando landed at Jig at about 09:50.
Their objective was to move west as fast as possible
to take over Port-en-Bessin.
It wasn't until the early morning of June 8th and after 3 great losses
that the Commandos were able to take over this fishing village.
The importance of Port-en-Bessin, as indicated in its name, was its port.
While waiting to take over Cherbourg and its deep water port
all type of supplies would be unloaded through this dock.
Especially fuel,
through a piping system known as PLUTO.
We may conclude that all objectives were met at Gold Beach
or at least with little delay.
On the east, the 69th Brigade made contact with Canadian troops.
On the west, the 231st captured Arromanches to build the artificial port.
Further west, the No. 47th Commandos would finally take Port-en-Bessin
and made contact with the Americans.
Finally, on the south, the 151st brigade dominated the N13 in the direction of Caen.
On the 7th, Bayeux became the first city liberated in Normandy.
But the British paid a great price.
It's been calculated that there were between 1000 and 1100 casualties on D-Day.
Today we've seen that Gold Beach has a lot of interesting places to visit.
