Why Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 Was (and Still is) Important - Duration: 10:01.

Hi, I'm Hamish Black and welcome to Writing on Games. Believe it or not, there was a point

in time where the notion of accurately representing the art of skateboarding was most effectively

realised, well… here. We live in a post-Skate world; we've seen how realistic the depictions

of skateboarding can be. As such, the idea that the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series started

off as a means of legitimising the sport in the eyes of the mainstream may seem a little

absurd. I mean just… look at it. Look at the speed

at which you careen through these places where skateboarders probably shouldn't be, how

high you go, how seemingly effortlessly you glide around the entire level coming across

super weird scenarios along the way. I mean, it's fairly well accepted at this

stage that the series met a slow, ungracious demise. This was a result of superfluous sequels

that superficially attempted to cash in on the culture; forcing dated, juvenile aesthetics

in your face. Well, what made those older games different? Aside from branding, what

here is actually indicating an accurate portrayal of the sport?

Well, I would go as far as to say that 3 remains one of the most streamlined representations

of the mindset behind skating that gaming has seen, precisely because of its heightened

artifice as a video game. Through the abstract nature of its mechanics as they relate to

actual skating, 3 is able to timelessly convey what it means to skate.

Let's take a step back for a minute. See, I was able to pick up 3 again recently thanks

to a lull in the barrage of new releases that has characterised the start of 2017 and man,

it's remarkable how well that game holds up. I played it for hours actively trying

to find flaws in the game's design and honestly, I came up short. It plays like it could have

been released yesterday. Every one of the game's systems is perfectly tuned to create

a stunningly pure gaming experience, carefully iterating on the vision laid out by the first

two games while avoiding the superfluity of future titles. It's through this purity that

the game can present its vision of the sport. How do we define that purity? You could sum

up Tony Hawk 3's player goal as follows – maintain fluid, balanced movement through

a level while making the numbers as big as possible within a two-minute time limit. Now

let's examine Underground 2, where you build up a team of pro skaters and some of the Jackass

cast in order to travel the world meandering through different environments before activating

a particular goal that might have you skating or it might have you controlling Steve-O riding

a bull and the goal is to create as much chaos as possible sometimes but sometimes it's

also to get a high score I guess and there's nut shots and Bam's dad is fat and sometimes

there's a time limit and sometimes there's not. To say it's diffuse would be to put

it lightly. On the other hand, Tony Hawk 3 is so focused

that, to me, it doesn't even matter that the characters are on skateboards. On a mechanical

level, it's not really about skating – it's solely about movement, and that movement ain't

exactly realistic. By 3 you have both manuals and reverts, meaning

you can essentially maintain a combo throughout the length, width and height of a level if

you wanted to. It's not about how stylish the tricks you pull off are, it's about

how many you can fit in before you hit the ground. Individual tricks don't provide

many points, but when each trick adds to a score multiplier, quantity rather than quality

becomes the incentive. The time limit adds a sense of urgency to proceedings without

becoming frustrating, due to the near instantaneous nature of restarting a run. Do you see what

I'm getting at here? Tony Hawk 3 is not Skate – it's not realistically representing

skating through the streets. It is sheer artifice – it is quintessentially a video game.

It evokes the mechanical coherence of old high-score arcade games which are easy to

pick up and play, but immensely difficult to master. It's the kind of game you can

complete in four minutes, but the discipline required to get to that point is where the

depth of the game lies. Tony Hawk 3 is about skateboarding in the same way Asteroids is

about going on a space adventure. Sure, it's technically what you do, but it's also more

mechanical than that – more artificial. And the game is better for this artifice!

3, at its core, is about training yourself to get better through discipline and understanding

of the mechanics of what you're trying to do. Once you internalise this, you begin to

see the world in a different way. You see every part of the

world as a means to push the boundaries of it even further. Every trivial rail, each

inconsequential elevation shifts in its intended purpose, instead becoming a means of getting

you to places you couldn't previously go. Once you get there, you know you achieved

that through your own skill, making it feel all the more satisfying. What I just said

could be applied to either Tony Hawk 3 or any number of interviews given by the Birdman

talking about his love of the sport. I think that says a lot about how the focus on overtly

game-y mechanics represent the purity of the sport, no matter how abstract it may seem

visually. And it's clear that 3 represented a peak of

sorts in this endeavour. Even 4 removing something as seemingly trivial as the time limit may

have offered more freedom to explore, but also removed any urgency from or reason for

maintaining fluid movement. More egregiously, however, we then saw the

addition of full blown narratives to proceedings in the Underground series, which at the start

saw you aspiring to be Chad Muska (of all people), and later saw full-blown celebrities

representing a more juvenile side to the sport. The CKY prank side of things was an important

part of the culture's evolution for sure, but focusing on it so heavily diluted the

lucidity of vision seen in previous games. Put it this way - people will play Tony Hawk

3 in years to come and get an idea of what it represents fairly immediately. People will

play Underground 2 and say "who the hell is Bam Margera and why do people treat this idiot

with such reverence?" It's why Skate became the dominant franchise of the sport – it

ultimately represented the same values that later Tony Hawk games left behind, albeit

in a more grounded, realistic fashion. Those later titles showed skating as a status

symbol; as a means of sticking it to the man and getting people to listen when you shout

"GET OUT OF MY ROOM, MOM", rather than a means of teaching you about yourself, the world

around you and how you can overcome your limitations. By emphasising cultural aesthetics over streamlined

design, the later titles placed themselves in such a specific point in time that they

felt dated and tired almost as soon as they launched. People quickly grow out of

that rebellious phase and almost always look back on it with utter disdain. In the

same way, people tend to look back on the titles that pushed it so hard and it's not

unreasonable to say that some might blame them for the death of that particular brand

of skate culture. As a whole, though, it never really died out.

It might lean more towards the fringes of the mainstream now, but it's also not driven

by the same kind of teen angst and nut shots that made the games look like the cast of

Jackass directed a Green Day video. Instead, there's a desire to creatively navigate the

world around us; to see the world differently, as something conquerable both spatially and

philosophically. There's something childlike to this desire, sure – it's an escape

from the constraints of everyday life by going faster and higher than anyone else. However,

there's also a maturity to maintaining the discipline required to learn a craft and hone

one's skills to do things that others can't. Essentially, skateboarding as it stands represents

a desire to grow - something the distinctly game-y mechanics of Tony Hawk 3 wholly reflect.

Games like Underground 2 and American Wasteland wallow in the aesthetics of the juvenile, attempting

to cash in on the rebellious phase all teens go through. By rejecting that dated perception

of skate culture, by focusing on the clarity and depth of its systems 3 was able to capture

a far more distilled vision of what it meant to skate. As such, it feels just as fresh

now as it did all those years ago. So I hope you enjoyed this piece on Tony Hawk

7 Reasons I HATE Skinny Jeans | Why YOU Should Avoid Men's Skinny Jeans - Duration: 7:47.

The word hate, it's a strong word.

I reserve it for things that actually deserve it: LA traffic, group text messages, people

talking to movie theaters, and skinny jeans.

Gentlemen, in today's video, seven reasons why I hate skinny jeans.

So, let me be clear, skinny jeans are fine for skinny men, but for most guys out there,

this isn't going to be the best choice for you.

Slim cut is going to be better, straight cut is going to be better, boot cut is going to

be better, even loose cut.

Well, you know, most guys are going to slim, straight boot, 90% of you, that's going to

be the choice.

Even if you go loose, there are variations loose.

Find the brand that works with your particular build and your body, that's what's going to

be best for you.

Don't be a big guy trying to get into slim jeans.

I know some of you guys are saying, Antonio they speak to me, that's what I want to wear.

Guys, I'm about to explain why it just does why it just isn't going to work.

Reason number one that I hate skinny jeans, gentlemen.

They cause urinary tract infections.

Yes, I'm serious.

They did a study of 2,000 British men and what they discovered, take note no pictures

in this study, thank goodness, but when I read the research, 50% of them said they had

issues with too much pressure in their groin.

Over time this basically causes your bladder to be overactive and when you have an overactive

bladder you're going to pee more, but this can over time lead to other issues including

urinary tract infections.

In fact, 25% of the guys in this study showed early signs of bladder issues, 20% of the

people in this study had suffered a twisted testicle.

If you are suffering of a twisted testicle to look good in skinny jeans, you've got issues

that go beyond what I'm beyond the skinny jeans.

Please, don't sacrifice comfort and health for fashion; it's just not worth it.

So, ditch those skinny jeans.

Reason number two that I hate skinny jeans.

Lack of functionality.

Come on, guys, jeans are supposed to be functional.

Let's go back and look at their history.

You've got the 49ers out there using jeans as they're panning for gold.

They could squat down, they can move around easily in their jeans, they had freedom of

movement.

Think about that in a pair of skinny jeans.

You have no freedom of movement.

It defeats the purpose of jeans.

You bend over, you're going to tear seam and you're going to expose your backside area.

Guys, if I had to let's say I'm out camping with Usain Bolt and a bear comes up, well,

I am probably in a pretty tough situation because that bear is going to eat me and Usain

is going to be able to outrun me, unless he's in a pair of skinny jeans.

All of a sudden, my chances have shot up because Usain Bolt in a pair of skinny jeans, man,

you just can't move those little legs, so, hey, he's going to get eaten by the bear.

Guys, think about functionality, avoid skinny jeans.

Reason number three that I hate skinny jeans.

Gentlemen, skinny jeans are like a cheap hotel, no ballroom.

You need room for your balls in your jeans.

Guys, that's simply the way that we're made.

Our testicles hang for a reason.

They need to basically get away from our core body, so that they can maintain a lower temperature

so that they can properly manufacture and store sperm.

If you mess this up, you're going to be shooting blanks.

Reason number four that I hate skinny jeans is that too many men of the wrong body type

are trying to wear skinny jeans.

If you're skinny, if you're thin, maybe give then a shot, but for the vast majority of

us, if you are muscular, if you are big, if you are heavy, if you are overweight, do not

try to squeeze into a pair of skinny jeans.

I've heard of guys being able to squeeze them on, button it up, and say, oh, yeah, I'm able

to button up the button, but yet they have a roll of fat hanging over.

Guys, that's not a good look, that's not a good sign.

Find the jeans that are going to compliment your body type.

Oftentimes it's not just going to be the style, it's going to also be the brand.

So, I know that Zegna makes the type of jeans that's great for older men.

These are probably going to be a little bit more expensive, some of these different brands

out there, but you find a brand that works for your body type.

I have a friend and he's very muscular.

He goes towards Diesel Jeans.

He has them brought in on the waist, but they're good and they fit him right in the thighs.

Guys, find the right style for your body type, don't try to squeeze into a pair that just

isn't, well, isn't made for you.

Reason number five I hate skinny jeans is that many times skinny jeans the particular

styles they go for a lower rise.

Guys, this looks horrible.

It shortens your legs, it makes your torso look abnormally long, and this doesn't look

good on really any guy out there.

In addition, you're going to have trouble walking getting back to the function aspect

of this.

But, guys, why would you wear jeans that just simply makes you look worse.

Reason number six I hate skinny jeans.

The pockets are useless.

Think about that.

You're wearing jeans that almost painted on your body, you can't even get a finger into

that front pocket.

When you put a thin wallet in your back pocket, it looks like you've got a tumor on your backside.

Guys, don't wear jeans that don't even allow that basic functionality of being able to

carry something.

You just try you finally slide that phone in and then you can't get it out.

You're not getting those out til you get those jeans surgically removed.

Guys, I want jeans that are functional.

Reason number seven that I hate skinny jeans.

They attract too much attention.

In fact, they draw our attention to the legs, to the thighs, to the buttocks area.

Now, for certain individuals maybe they do want to attract and I guess for them that's

fine, go with those bright red painted on jeans and everyone is looking at your backside

your legs.

That may be for some individuals and I'm not saying that's wrong, but I think for most

people that want my channel, we want to project an air of confidence, of strength, of power,

and of status.

You do that not by drawing attention to your legs.

Your legs the eyes should go up and down, instead it's going to be shoes, it's going

to be jackets, it's going to be the people around you, it's going to be your behavior.

You don't want people talking about guy -- look at those guy that guy in those jeans.

Instead, you want to say that guy looks like he's the man like he's important.

And that's what I really want you guys to be able to do, control your image, so if you

want to send that message of trust, you want to send the signal of power, you want to send

the signal of strength, and attraction and being attractive, that's an after effect of

your status in that group that you're in.

All right, gentlemen so now, it's your turn.

entertaining.

You know, the type of social that people who have no time, but want results are asking

for. Yeah, those people.

I hate to tell you this, but if you are going to be successful online, you need to invest

time and energy and heart and soul into it.

You can't just post an article or a video or a tweet and expect it to get in front of

people.

And no, it doesn't matter how brilliant or funny you are.

"But, I'm the best." Kanye West, Kobe System Commercial

Let me put this into context:

There are 1.8 billion pieces of content on Facebook, 500 million posts on Twitter, 85

million images and videos posted to Instagram, and 300 thousand videos uploaded to YouTube…

DAILY.

You heard that right.

Every.

Single.

Day.

And those stats are from a few years ago and don't include Snapchat and WhatsApp

and blogs and media sources every other app hosting gobs of content that exists today

and into the future.

Now, you may have the most brilliant message in the universe,

"Oh, by the way, I'm awesome." Friends

but don't think that you can just swoop in and post something and then be discovered.

It doesn't happen that way.

According to Derek Thompson, author of Hit Makers, "The Science of Popularity in an

Age of Distraction,"

"Quality, it seems, is a necessary, but insufficient attribute for success."

And Derek should know.

He looked at patterns and multiple stories and studies of what has gone viral or

become a hit in the history of pop culture.

In his book, he gives countless examples of great ideas that went nowhere for years before

they got in front of the right people - usually through established networks at the right

place at the right time.

If you aren't connected through networks, you have less of a chance to get your content

in front of the right people...at the right time.

To connect, you have to participate and invest and you have to do it long before you need

to get your content seen.

Many moons ago, I wrote a little book in which I talked about the concept of social capital

deposits and withdrawals.

You see, the social web is built on social capital, and much like financial capital,

you can't spend what you haven't earned.

You earn social capital by investing time and goodness into the network.

And it takes a LOT of social capital deposits before you can even THINK about withdrawing.

You want to be participating in conversations and helping others out for months and even

years before you start asking them to help you out.

So you need to invest the time every single day.

You need to read through tweets and jump in where you can be helpful.

You need to spend time in your Facebook feed, congratulating people when they reach a milestone

and encouraging and supporting them when they've had a bad day.

You need to scroll through Instagram posts and really see the world through the eyes

of your friends and connections.

You need to care about what they are doing in their day to day life.

You need to engage on a regular basis.

"Engage now." Eye in the Sky

And then when it comes time for you to start posting your amazing work to the web, you'll

have built enough connections and trust and social capital to get in front of those right

people who will share it to more people, who they've built relationships with, who will

share it to others who they've built relationships with and so on and so on and so forth.

But the elements that need to be in place are social deposits, amazing work...and a

true commitment.

This means that you need to put time in.

because I get to go different places,

like down this alleyway. Where does it

take me? What things might I discover?

Life is about exploring. Well, business is

also about exploring. And business, when

it's fun, creates a really big bang. This

year you've got a plan, you're working

out a strategy for your business.

Wherever you are in your business you're

putting a lot of effort into it, a lot of

your passion, a lot of your energy, your

drive. Maybe even like I've done, a lot of

money. And when you finally get that big

client or contract you think, "Oh my god I

can just relax for a moment." But then

something else shows up and then

suddenly throws you off track, and you're

really distracted, and you don't know

what to focus on. Because, "Oh my god

you've got so many things to do!" What

drops off? What do you stop doing when

you get into that busy mode? Well, often

it's the things we need to do most and I

am just as guilty of this. I might have a

health and fitness background, I might

try and practice what I preach,

but yes sometimes I stop. Sometimes I

don't go to the gym, sometimes I don't

take proper care of myself, sometimes I

get so freakin stressed out

that I crash and burn. So if we want to

create a successful business we need to

be well, we need to take care of our health,

we need to have that foundation. And if

we look around all of these houses are

still standing. The road on which I'm

standing exists because there's a

foundation beneath it. When we don't take

care of those things, things fall apart.

And as we age – like the cracks in the

driveway that I'm seeing here – we need to

take care of those things. We need to

revise, we need to repair, we need to

upgrade. So without your health and your

wellbeing you are going to suffer, even

if your business grows, but the long and

short of it is that, if you are suffering

your business is eventually going to

suffer as well. So that's what I'm here

to help you with is to look at what are

the behaviors that you can implement as

part of your overall business strategy,

the healthy behaviors that are going to

get you to where you want to go. And what

are those one, two, or three top things

you need to do in your life that are

going to support you to get forward in

your business

while maintaining your health and

wellbeing. It doesn't have to be hours a

day. It doesn't have to be maybe what you

used to do. It just needs to be enough to

sustain and support you so that you can

feel well and so that you can be well.
