The Channel Islands is located really just a couple hours boat ride from Santa Barbara,

Los Angeles California, and there are areas of it that are still not mapped.

Last year we covered a little over a third of what still remained to be mapped,

but there's more.

Mapping is an essential primary data layer, in terms of looking at things like nautical

safety, what to do in a disaster, something like an oil spill, knowing where these ocean

currents are going to be going.

In terms of endangered species and their ranges, you need to know what the habitat layer is

like before you're able to predict where to look for certain endangered species.

There's really interesting tectonic activity, and the changes in sea level have been recoreded

in shorelines that are now submerged beneath the ocean.

They exist as what are called terraces.

Wave cut platforms, these flat areas with steep cliffs, that we've mapped out in part

last year.

We're returning to do some aditional mapping this year to try to locate interesting features

on these shorelines that we can then characterize with the remotely operated vehicles.

The Real Reason Why We Don't Hear About Dana Carvey Anymore - Duration: 8:13.

Throughout the '80s and '90s, Dana Carvey was a towering presence in comedy, and he

was the unequalled star of Saturday Night Live during his 1986 to 1993 tenure.

"Well isn't that special?"

From the Church Lady to Garth to his unhinged impressions of politicians like George H.W.

Bush, Carvey was king.

That's great — but what has he been up to recently?

Heart problems

In the '90s, Carvey reported suffering terrible chest pain.

Doctors discovered that it was related to blood not flowing properly to his heart.

"Come here, Come here..

Look at this x-ray, your heart looks like a pig's a------, look at that thing!"

Still, the terrible chest pains continued, even after multiple angioplasties and a double

bypass.

Further tests revealed that his doctor had made a terrible mistake: he'd bypassed the

wrong artery.

"Oh no!

That's not good!

I'm not happy!"

Carvey had no choice but to repeat the painful and elaborate double bypass surgery…but

with a different doctor.

Carvey sued the original heart surgeon for $7.5 million and settled out of court in 2000.

Being the victim of a botched surgery understandably sidelined Carvey for a while.

Family man

After he left SNL in 1993, Carvey starred in a string of what he calls "awful movies",

including Trapped in Paradise and The Master of Disguise.

At the time, he realized that he didn't want to be away from his two very young sons, Dex

and Tom.

He told The A.V.

Club that he even ended up bringing his kids to the sets of his movies, saying,

"It felt weird and awkward to hand the kid to a nanny, so that kind of went out the window.

One son had a lot of ear infections, and the other one got the flu."

During the filming of Wayne's World 2, one of his sons became upset with his long, blond

Garth Algar wig and started sobbing.

Carvey took those incidents as cues to focus on his family full-time and moved his wife

and kids to a "a small town with trees" in northern California.

Carvey didn't tend to his career for two full years.

Dex and Tom Carvey are now both in their 20s, and are both pursuing careers in comedy, just

like their dad.

Near misses

He could've been a player on late night TV.

In the early '90s, Late Night host David Letterman jumped over to CBS to go head-to-head with

The Tonight Show, so NBC tasked SNL creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels with

finding a host.

He looked to his SNL cast.

Carvey, amiable, versatile, and one of the most popular cast members in years, was offered

the job.

NBC thought it was such a lock that they gave him $1 million, and a Beatles album signed

by all four Beatles worth $400,000, just to consider the offer.

Carvey even landed on the cover of TV Guide as Letterman's heir apparent.

It took a year for Carvey to decide not to do Late Night, because he didn't want to commit

to a nightly show.

It wasn't the first time he passed on a job, either.

The 1995 action movie Bad Boys was first offered to Carvey and his SNL co-star Jon Lovitz.

At the time, it was titled Bulletproof Hearts, and it could've been a huge hit for Carvey

at the peak of his fame.

But then director Michael Bay, at the time best known for making music videos, joined

the project, and convinced producers to make it a youth-oriented action flick.

Carvey and Lovitz did a screen test, which Carvey felt was so inappropriate for him that

he left the movie.

Carvey even tried to fall back on one of his popular recurring SNL sketches: European bodybuilders

Hans and Franz.

"I am Hans…"

"Und I am Franz."

"And we want to … pump… you up."

SNL writer Robert Smigel worked on the screenplay for a big-screen adventure with Carvey, Kevin

Nealon, and Conan O'Brien.

Oh, and it was also a musical.

'And then their muscles were going to dance like 'boom boom, boom boom'… then they're

going to flex and g------ it was gonna be funny."

A substantial role was written for Arnold Schwarzenegger, playing himself as well as

an Austrian grandmother, but he dropped out of Hans and Franz: The Girly-Man Dilemma after

the failure of the similarly self-effacing Last Action Hero.

After that, the project collapsed.

These weren't even Carvey's earliest or worst brushes with the fickle world of Hollywood.

Solo sketches

Just two years after leaving the comedy confines of SNL in 1994, Carvey returned to TV with

The Dana Carvey Show.

While it was critically acclaimed and became a cult hit among comedy nerds, it was a commercial

disaster.

ABC scheduled it to air immediately after its family-friendly mega-hit Home Improvement.

What they got was wild, weird, and just a little dark — everything Home Improvement

wasn't.

"The days are rushing by children, it'll be over before you know it…"

The show honed the talents of a lot of the most important comedy writers and performers

of the last 20 years, including writer Charlie Kaufman, The Office co-creator Greg Daniels,

Community writer Dino Stamatopoulos, and head writer Louis C.K.

And then there were these guys.

Ratings dropped after the first episode, and The Dana Carvey Show was canceled after seven

weeks.

It took nearly 15 years for Carvey to attempt sketch comedy again.

In 2010, he and Dana Carvey Show writer Spike Feresten created a series for Fox called Spoof,

which was completely pre-taped and didn't feature any in-studio pieces or a live audience.

Fox paid for a pilot, but opted not to order it to a full series.

Again, it was very, very weird.

Finally, in 2016, Carvey starred on a game show befitting his talents.

USA's First Impressions with Dana Carvey was a competition show that sought out America's

most skilled amateur voice impressionist, with a cash prize of $100,000.

Carvey served as the show's "Expert in Residence," and both he and Freddie Prinze Jr. judged

and coached the contestants.

Unfortunately, the show was not a huge hit, and wasn't renewed for a second season.

At least he could still team up with Mike Myers again, right?

"WRONG!"

The Evil feud

Mike Myers brought the character of metal-head TV host Wayne Campbell to Saturday Night Live

when he joined the cast in 1989, and his chemistry with Dana Carvey seemed natural.

But Carvey had a different take on the relationship, saying,

"We were never meant to be a comedy team.

Mike just invited me into the sketch.

I'm grateful that he did."

After Wayne and Garth spawned a movie in 1992, and a sequel in 1993, Myers and Carvey left

SNL, and everything was fine… until Myers wrote and starred in Austin Powers: International

Man of Mystery in 1997.

The character of Dr. Evil, played by Myers, was a parody of various James Bond villains,

but his mannerisms closely reflected those of SNL creator Lorne Michaels.

Or, according to Carvey, they more specifically mirrored Carvey's impression of Michaels,

which he'd do around the offices of SNL.

Carvey was so miffed at the comedic plagiarism that he didn't talk to Myers for about a decade.

But they've since made up, appearing together at multiple Wayne's World anniversary screenings.

Dr. Evil said it best:

"It's just so pathetic to see you guys fight over a silly comedy.

It's like watching two bald men fight over a comb.

Who cares…?"

He's doing stand-up again

Carvey is mainly known as a sketch comedy performer and actor in movies of varying success,

but when he first got into show business in the early 1980s, it was as a stand-up comedian.

After leaving SNL, he did stand-up here and there, taping a few specials.

But he took a pretty long break before starring in his first new special in nearly a decade,

Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60.

Along with Jon Lovitz, he's a comic-in-residence at The Foundry in Las Vegas, where over the

course of 2017 he'll perform 20 shows of stand-up, comedy sketches, and musical numbers.

So, if you don't see him in movies or on TV, you know where to find him.

4.16. Don't Use Self-Improvement as an Excuse - Duration: 4:02.

In the previous video, I was talking to all the social justice warriors out there.

I argued that self-care is so important because a lot of people—the non-social justice warriors—

choose not to get involved in good causes, because it looks to them like everybody who does ends up miserable.

I argued that if we show people they don't have to give up their sanity to make the world a better place…

we'll get more people involved than if we keep trying to shame them into it.

In this video—the last one in this series on self-care—I want to talk to the non-social justice warriors.

The people out there who know, deep down, they aren't doing as much as they could to make the world a better place.

To you all, I just want to say one, really important thing:

Don't use self-improvement as an excuse.

Don't use self-improvement as a way to hide from all the awful stuff going on in the world.

Don't let your own personal challenges, obstacles, and struggles get in the way

of giving what you have to give to the rest of the world.

I don't think selfishness, laziness, apathy, or malevolence can explain

why so many people aren't getting as involved as they could.

I think if there were more role models out there, showing people how to genuinely make a difference

while living a happy, healthy personal life…there'd be a whole lot more people doing it.

I think there are a lot of people who deceive themselves, and say things like: "Once I get my own life in order,

once I'm where I want to be in my own personal development…then I'll get more involved

in fixing all these problems in the world."

But seriously, folks: it just doesn't work that way.

Self-improvement is a lifelong project.

If you're waiting until things are just right in your own life to get involved

in making our society better…you're going to be waiting until the day you die.

I don't know what you've got going on in your life.

I'm not in a position to judge, if you feel you don't have anything to spare.

But this isn't a time when we can afford to let good people who can really make a difference sit on the sidelines.

Billions of people are suffering.

And there are problems out there that threaten our entire species.

None of us asked to be alive during these crazy times.

But here we are.

We've got to solve these problems, whether we like it or not.

But even after more than ten years of studying just how complicated these problems are…

I still believe we can solve them.

I really do.

And even after more than ten years of wrapping my head around how much horrible suffering they cause…

I still believe you can be out there, making a difference, and still have a happy, healthy, fulfilling personal life.

I really do.

I don't blame you, if you don't believe those things are possible.

But I hope you'll at least give me the benefit of the doubt, and the chance to make my case in the coming videos.

Stars Who Haven't Figured Out That No One Likes Them Anymore - Duration: 6:25.

Not every celebrity is, well, celebrated.

Some stars drum up more controversies than fans — and still keep going despite the

fact that the public has made it pretty clear they aren't very interested anymore.

Based on backlash, as well as sales, these are the stars people just can't seem to stand.

Katherine Heigl

It's not just audiences who've been backing away from Katherine Heigl.

Studios and casting agents have also shied away from dealing with the notoriously difficult

former A-lister.

One source close to her film One For The Money said it was toxic to even use her in ads,

telling Vulture, "Look at the TV spots: You notice that they're not calling her out?

There's no 'Katie Heigl stars in…'

They're going out of their way to not mention her.

[...] Because when you don't call out a movie star like that?

They know there's an issue.

She did something to turn everyone off."

Heigl admitted as much herself in a December 2011 interview with Elle in which she lamented,

"I've never really been America's sweetheart, but for a minute I think that's what they

wanted me to be.

And I had 'em for a second thinking maybe I was.

And then I opened my mouth and it was clear I wasn't."

Indeed her mouth has gotten her into some major trouble with the wrong people before.

She notoriously bit the hand that fed her by refusing to submit her work on Grey's Anatomy

for an Emmy nomination, saying, "I did not feel that I was given the material this season

to warrant an Emmy nomination."

Creator Shonda Rhimes was not too pleased with that comment and let the actress go off

to step into a minefield of critical and box office bombs.

Robin Thicke

After a lifetime of living in the shadow of his famous father Alan Thicke, singer Robin

Thicke finally became a name all his own once with the hit single "Blurred Lines" in 2013.

Thicke's album sold hundreds of thousands of copies as a result.

Unfortunately, that sudden star status took a toll on his off-stage behaviors, as he was

notoriously caught with his hand on a woman's rear while still married to his wife Paula

Patton.

His racy on-stage performance with Miley Cyrus at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards certainly

didn't help matters, and his marriage very publicly dissolved soon after.

Thanks to disappointing album sales with his next effort, an apology album titled Paula,

and his recurring role in gossip headlines, Thicke's star status has certainly faded these

days.

Chris Brown

Hip hop star Chris Brown has had a lot of hit songs despite his bad reputation, but

there are some things the public seems unwilling to forgive.

After he was notoriously caught abusing former girlfriend Rihanna, Brown tried to revitalize

his career, but former fans weren't buying the new albums he was selling.

In December 2016, he released a surprise single called "Party," then went on a since-deleted

social media rant when it didn't sell well, writing, "Everyone of you who follows me and

has fake pages being fake supporters is a lil bogus.

BUYMYS**T."

So, yeah.

Obviously he still has some rage issues.

Madonna

There's no doubt that Madonna is a music legend who definitely earned her Hall of Fame status.

But over the years, fans have waxed and waned over their continued interest in the legendary

songstress.

While she did enjoy a brief resurgence in the mid-2000s, sales have since dropped for

her records.

2015's Rebel Heart, for example, was a massive flop compared to her former hauls.

The album moved only 238,000 copies, as opposed to 2008's Hard Candy, which sold 758,000 copies.

Tactics like appropriating imagery from the Civil Rights and anti-apartheid movements

to promote her album probably did more harm than good.

Still, her powerful speech at the Women's March in January 2017 proved she's still a

force to be reckoned with, so don't count her out completely — especially if she's

got a sick beat and a good promotional team behind her.

Jenny McCarthy

It seems like Jenny McCarthy can't talk about anything without the discussion coming back

to her controversial opinions on medicine.

The former Playmate doesn't have an M.D., but that didn't stop her from spouting anti-vaccine

rhetoric for years — before somewhat backpedaling.

She also perpetuated damaging falsehoods about HIV and AIDS when she found out Charlie Sheen

was diagnosed with HIV after she guest starred in Two And A Half Men alongside the troubled

actor.

The public refuses to let her forget it, even reminding her of her alleged anti-vaccine

body count when she poses innocuous, unrelated questions online.

Perhaps if McCarthy spent less time talking about science and more time just being funny,

she'd have a bigger fanbase.

Iggy Azalea

Few stars have had rises as meteoric and falls as rapid as Iggy Azalea.

The Aussie-born rapper had one of the biggest songs of 2014 with "Fancy," followed by her

hit "Black Widow" and her verse of Ariana Grande's "Problem."

Unfortunately for Azalea, those single sales didn't translate to ticket sales, and she

had to scrap an entire arena tour in 2015 for lack of interest.

That's not the only letdown she's dealt with over the past few years.

In late 2014, Azalea became a punchline when a video showing her struggling to freestyle

went viral and called to question her true talent as an MC.

"Tire Monks, tire monks.

Finish line with the fire monks."

Her November 2014 album, Reclassified, did nothing to improve her stature as it only

sold an estimated 11,000 copies in its first week, with single "Trouble" peaking at No.

67 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Then in the spring of 2015, a viral petition was launched to rescind her Billboard Music

Award for Best Rap Song for "Fancy."

By January 2016, Azalea complained that her label didn't even want to release a video

for her struggling single "A Zillion."

The clincher came when she went toe-to-toe with the Princess of Pop herself, Britney

Spears, over who was to blame for the lack of success their "Pretty Girls" collaboration.

Considering fans have long familiarized themselves with Spears' work ethic…

"You better work, bitch."

… it wasn't too hard for the public to pick sides in that battle of the blondes.

Baldwin IV: The Leper King | Tooky History - Duration: 2:47.

He was the king of Jerusalem back when this one dude you never heard of called Saladin wanted to conquer it

As a kid, Baldwin was playing a dumb game with his friends where they tried to hurt each other

He felt no pain and before he could start throwing Muhammad Ali quotes on everyone

It was discovered that the cause of this was leprosy

So instead of going down in history as Baldwin the Painless, he was Baldwin the Leper

Baldwin was only 13 years old when he was crowned. It was already known that he wouldn't last long

So his sister became a point of interest to anyone who wanted a better position in the kingdom

Which, if you look at who went on the Crusades, is pretty much everyone in the city

We can't really say with certainty what criteria his sister used when choosing her husband

All we do know is that the dude was known as William Longsword

During this time, Saladin united different Muslim nations and proclaimed a Jihad against the Crusaders who held Jerusalem

Saladin's forces started raiding towards the city of Ascalon

With the ambition of capturing it and preparing for another offence

Baldwin marched out with less than 400 knights and reached Ascalon before Saladin could

Figuring how Baldwin was now trapped and surrounded in Ascalon

Saladin decided to just ignore him and march straight onto a defenseless Jerusalem

While continuing his looting, Saladin didn't really look over his shoulder

And he allowed Baldwin to leave Ascalon and follow him

You can't really blame Saladin, one of the greatest generals in history wasn't likely to get scared by a 16-year-old leper boy

However, that leper boy caught him by surprise and defeated him

William Longsword died soon after giving a nephew to Baldwin, and another guy came to be Baldwin's brother-in-law

That other guy, called Guy de Lusignan, was pretty much useless and nobody really liked him

So Baldwin decided that his successor would be his baby nephew

Baldwin's health became progressively worse – he had open skin wounds all over his body, his face got disfigured

Although he didn't wear a mask as Ridley Scott would like you to believe

And he had less and less control of his limbs

But, all that wasn't enough to stop Baldwin, as he had a couple of more battles with Saladin

Which kept the general from achieving his goal

In 1183, his condition was so bad that he couldn't stand anymore

He lost his eyesight and his body started literally disintegrating

So the command of the army was taken over by that useless brother-in-law who obviously failed

Baldwin, figuring out it was up to him to save the day, decided to leave his bed and get carried over to lead his army

When Saladin heard about Baldwin coming for him, he withdrew and didn't attack Jerusalem again

Until Baldwin died at the age of 24

A blind, deformed leper king revered by one of the greatest generals in history

Cat 8 is designed for switch-to-server connections at the edge of the data center.

day: if your dress is gonna fit the same

way it did a week ago, if someone in your

story that you forbid them from telling,

if one of your relatives drinks too much

champagne and busts out their groovy

dance moves.. I could go on and on, but you

get the point. Now we can't help ensure

that your friends or family members won't

slightly embarrass you, but what we can do

is help you find locals trustworthy

business. In 2016 among the various

wedding vendors, jewelers, florists, and

photographers were the top three most

complained about. Complaints ranged from

customer service to billing disputes or

even the dreaded, "I paid my

photographer upfront and they didn't

show!" So before saying, "I do," here a three must

do's. Check ratings and reviews, and not

just on one website. Check every review

site you can, and see what people are

saying. Also be sure to check the

company's rating and reviews at bbb.org.

Avoid paying the entire cost up front. Ask

if you can set up a payment plan and be

sure the details of the payment plan are

included in your contract.

Speaking of which, read your contracts

thoroughly. And ask a lot of questions...

Like.. a lot. Do you have a backup? How soon will I get my pictures?

what time will you arrive the day of? Do you have insurance for your equipment?

You get the idea!

Also be sure to give your vendors a

point of contact other than yourself.

Such as, your maid of honor or your best man.

Twisp Edge X Vape Review - Duration: 4:54.

Hello, hello, hello fellow YouTubers today I am going to talk to you about the Twisp

Edge X.

This is the 11th generation of the Twisp devices and it features a variable power output system.

You can adjust this output system here so you can determine the amount of vape you want.

So this device is available in black, it's available in white.

It is also features a host of upgraded including an integrated atomizer and the Twisp smart

button.

This right here is the Twisp smart button, if you press it once it shows you the charge

level of the battery.

These are huge improvements that were put on the 11th generation of this device, the

previous generations did not have a battery level indicator, this also shows you if there

are any errors or faults on the actual device, as it will flash different combinations to

indicate the nature of the problem.

So the device, it contains an Edge X mouth piece, Edge X atomizer tank where you fill

the liquid, two atomizer heads that come in the box for you start vaping and it comes

with a much bigger battery than the previous version.

This is a 650mh battery.

It also comes with a AC/USB adaptor.

So you can charge quickly, the device itself does charge quickly and holds charge for the

better part of a day depending on how often you vaping.

Sometimes I get two or three days of the one battery charge.

If you are looking for something, to generate huge amounts of vape than this device is not

for you.

This device generates a reasonable amount of vape, but you certainly can't do vape tricks

with it and you certainly shouldn't buy it if you are looking to make vape clouds.

This is primarily for those who are wanting to give up smoking cigarettes, this is a good

alternative but one caution, please make sure that you don't end up smoking this as much

as you would have smoked a cigarete or more.

The temptation is great because you can smoke this virtually anywhere, you can smoke it

in doors, you can smoke it in closed areas.

Some people even chance smoking it in malls and in airports.

So there is always the temptation to smoke more than what you would have otherwise smoked

if you would have smoked a cigarette.

Overall it is a good device, great build quality, the only down side is its price.

The price you pay for this you can get a host of other vaping devices with double the capacity,

double the tank size, double the battery, double the atomizing power.

So the one downside is its cost and as a result of that I would rate this a 6 out of 10.

A lot more could have been done for this device to improve and increase the vaping capacity

to produce much greater density vape that it does produce but overall it is a great

looking device, it works well, got a good build quality, you can adjust your power output

at the bottom.

So this is the Twisp Edge X and that's my review of the device.

David and Evelyn have put together the most beautiful house, the most beautiful property.

The team that they have assembled here, their staff, Lillian, Elaina, Juan, Cesar, and their

Chef Desiree, will take care of your every single need.

We've sat by the pool every single evening and watched the monkeys come down like clockwork.

The troops.

I remember watching testimonials of this house prior to arriving and wondering if there was

any exaggeration and there is none.

This place is incomparable.

BREAKING: Trump Sends POWERFUL Message to Middle East With THIS Shock Move - Duration: 2:21.

President Trump is proving his commitment to do what it takes to win the war against

ISIS and other extremists.

Generals working under President Trump's orders have launched an airstrike against

Shiite rebels backed by the Syrian Regime mere moments ago.

(via Haaretz)

The Muslim fighters were stopped after violating a "de-confliction" zone near the Syrian-Iraqi

border.

The rebels ignored warning shots fired by American fighter jets.

The Shiite rebels were encroaching on territory held by the US-backed Free Syrian Army.

American military leaders have been present on the Syrian-Iraqi border recently offering

training and guidance to the Free Syrian Army as they attempt to push back ISIS militants.

The strike is being referred to as a "dynamic" response as opposed to a planned bombing.

The airstrike was ordered to protect American-backed forces stationed in the area.

It is unclear if any American soldiers were present.

However, American forces have been active in the area recently.

Last month, three American-backed fighters were killed at the border crossing.

American troops were present but were not harmed.

The southern-border region of Syria is becoming a hot spot in the fight against ISIS as both

Syrian-backed and American-backed forces attempt to seize land held by the terrorist organization.

The airstrike launched earlier today destroyed a Syrian-backed convoy including a bulldozer

and a tank as well as many rebel fighters.

Officials have reported that the convoy was not controlled by the Syrian army directly,

but was working on behalf of the Syrian government.

Officials from the Free Syrian Army claim that the airstrike allowed them to hold their

ground against the advancing Syrian armies an continue their struggle against ISIS forces

to their north.

British and American special forces have been training fighters in the Free Syrian Army

and are planning on expanding the base along the border.

We wish them the absolute best of luck in this mission.

By issuing this strike President Trump continues to take the fight directly to the terrorist

forces to keep his promise of completely destroying ISIS.

We can't wait to see them completely annihilated!

Why Is Fake Blood So Hard to Make? - Duration: 4:39.

Fake blood is easy to make if you're a movie director.

A little corn syrup, a little food coloring, and you've got

all the gore your heart could desire.

But you don't want to inject that into your veins and be like,

'oh, that's going to help'.

Real blood is made up of cells that do lots of things,

like closing wounds and fighting infections.

But the thing we really need blood for is oxygen transport.

Blood transfusions save lives, but there just isn't enough donated blood to go around.

Even what we can scrounge up and refrigerate has an expiration date of around 42 days,

so it's extremely perishable in remote areas without refrigeration.

So there is lots of motivation to develop a blood substitute,

but it is really hard to do.

Even if you have artificial blood that looks good in the lab, making sure it's safe enough

to use in the world is a whole other problem.

Medical professionals have a long wishlist of things that a blood substitute should be

able to do.

First and foremost, it should be able to carry oxygen and drop it off at cells.

It should last more than a few weeks at various temperatures without getting too damaged,

and be easy to manufacture in decent amounts.

It should also be safe: it shouldn't spread bloodborne diseases or cause dangerous immune

responses in people with different blood types.

In recent decades, there have been three main approaches to making blood substitutes that

meet at least some of these criteria.

One involves a class of synthetic chemicals called perfluorocarbons, which are mostly

made of carbon and fluorine atoms and aren't chemically reactive.

Perfluorocarbons can bind with gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide to carry them around

like red blood cells do.

But they're hydrophobic molecules, and don't mix easily with our water-filled bloodstreams.

That means they have to be mixed with other chemicals to form what's called an emulsion

before they're put into our bodies.

Now, a few perfluorocarbon-based blood substitutes are out there, but there haven't been very

many clinical trials and a lot of research has stalled.

There have been concerns with safety, like treatments causing flu-like symptoms and other

complications, and efficacy, like patients needing to breathe in extra oxygen because

the perfluorocarbons can't transport it as well as normal blood can.

A second strategy is to use the actual oxygen-carrying protein in blood: hemoglobin.

Regrettably, we can't just throw extra hemoglobin into people and call the problem solved.

Your body keeps it tied up inside red blood cells for a reason -- hemoglobin can be toxic

if it's just floating around, because it's really chemically reactive and can bind to

different parts of cells, which messes with how they work.

Past attempts have tried chemically modifying hemoglobin to not cause toxicity, but a lot

of them still appeared to be unsafe or just didn't work at the clinical trial stage.

Currently, some research groups are trying to make different kinds of synthetic chemical

envelopes that keep hemoglobin tucked safely away, just like your red blood cells do.

But it's a tricky process: like, if these envelopes are too small, they might escape

out of blood vessels.

But still, this technology is appealing because a synthetic molecular shell means there's

no blood type problem.

And since it was never inside another human being, the chances for disease transmission

are low.

One team even thinks their molecule-wrapped hemoglobin can be freeze-dried and reconstituted

in water for use, which means it'll have a very long shelf life.

But these hemoglobin-based substitutes are still a long way away from human trials.

That is not the case for this third approach: the UK's National Health Service is set

to test a blood substitute made of real red blood cells as early as this year!

They're hard to make, but not impossible -- thanks to stem cell technology.

See, your body has lots of specialized cells, like red blood cells or brain cells or skin

cells… all the cells.

And stem cells can turn into more specialized types when they're exposed to different

signals, from chemical cocktails to physical contact.

The stem cells in this artificial blood treatment comes from sources like adult bone marrow

or umbilical cord blood.

And, with the right signals, they become functionally identical to the red blood cells already inside

of us.

It's hard to make mature cells from stem cells in the first place, and it's really

hard to make a lot them.

So the researchers say they don't intend for this to be a mass-market, one-size-fits-all

solution to the blood shortage.

Instead, it's like a boutique approach.

Doctors could tailor small batches of blood for patients with rare blood types or other

unique needs for transfusions.

There probably isn't a single solution to the need for artificial blood right now, because

our red blood cells just do so many things so very well.

But there's room for different scientific approaches to work together, and hopefully

some of them will start to work even maybe just a little bit sometime soon.

going to be speaking about something a

little personal. I'm not really too sure

how I feel about this topic to tell you

guys I'm a little shy, but I'm going to

proceed anyway.I'm not a gastroenter-

eulogist, I am NOT your dietitian, I'm a

dietitian! [and] We're going to be speaking

about certain occurrences for men and

women; we're going to make this gender

neutral, that does occur below your belt.

we're not going to speak about anything

dealing with the front ladies and

gentlemen I made a video about that

before video popping up now so go ahead

and take a look at it. So we're going to

actually be speaking about your derriere

-your backside and the particular

odors which do come from your

flatulence I guess that's the medical

term or your fart for lack of better

words. So I'll be honest with you passing

gas is something that we all do on a

daily basis. Some of the gas that we pass

some of them may have different odors so

it's important to know what odor is

normal for you everyone has a different

gas odor. Some people are even odorless.

I'm finding that's the case with me

typically, but lately um it hasn't been like

that I'm just being honest, 100% with you guys.

There are certain foods that we eat

which can affect the frequency of our

gas as well as the scent of our gas and

I just wanted to touch topics with you

guys about that today. So I'm pretty sure

we've all been a situation I've been in

a situation where nature calls and

you have to use the bathroom, a public

bathroom I mean it's not the most ideal

situation, but when nature calls you know

you have to go. So someone walks in and

the bathroom smells horrid and you're

the only one in that bathroom and of

course they know it's you when they come

out of the bathroom you guys are washing

hands you know trying to be polite and

there's other situations where you're in

public and you have to let one go. It can

either be a silent killer or you know

you're squeezing in trying to be polite

not having any sound to escape your

derriere and you squeeze it and it has

a scent and you're hoping that no one

recognizes the scent girl --or guy it

stinks it smells like rotten eggs. Just

being... keeping it professional we keep it

100% on this channel 100! This is

really about educating yourselves and

knowing what foods can cause different

odors. If individuals have any food

sensitivities, any food allergies, any bowel

disturbances then that can definitely

cause odors. Recently the FODMAP diet is

a diet that is becoming very popular and

I'm going tell you what FODMAP stands

for I have it memorized the term FODMAP,

but let me tell you what it stands for--I have

my... looking it up on my cellphone right

quick. So what FODMAP means is

fermentable oligosaccharides,

disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols

and basically this diet is made for

people that have Irritable Bowel

Syndrome (IBS) and these are foods that tend

to sit in the stomach. People that have

IBS have a hard time digesting these

foods.

One of the things that happens to them

besides abdominal pain they do have a

lot of gas. So I'm pretty sure the first

scent that we all know of is that stinky

rotten egg scent. Raise your hand, attest

to it ,tell the truth and shame the devil

and these are foods that are high in

cysteine. Cysteine is one of those amino

acids which have sulfur in them. Certain

foods that have sulfur in them, I'm just

going to name a few-- so we have cabbage,

brussel sprouts, yes mm-hmm

we have onion, garlic, bok choy which is

one of my favorite greens. When eating

these foods you can have a very sinky

smell. Additionally certain foods as well;

foods that are high in protein such as

your meat products and your dairy

products, these things can make you have

a very foul-smelling wind. These are the

foods just letting you guys become a little

more aware of these certain foods.

I'm not saying oh you should stop eating

these foods what I'm saying is you need

to be aware. Additionally certain foods

can cause and odor well and these are

as a result of foods that are undigested;

undigested carbohydrates particularly in

the body. Additionally certain foods can

cause you to be gassing and of course those

are the foods that are high in fiber.

Some people do have a problem of being a

little gassier--

more gassier than others. I'm a person in

my culture we grew up on legumes so I do

not have a problem with eating beans I

mean it's actually a part of my diet

almost on a daily basis. I would say

every other day I'm eating some type of

legumes. So individuals may need to work up

their tolerance to that [eating more fiber]. When we eat, when

we talk, when we drink something we

inhale air so the air that we inhale

into our stomachs you know it passes

through the whole entire digestive tract

and then it is expelled. Being careful

when eaten in particular you know some

people like to eat and talk at the same

time so you are ingesting a little more

air. And also fizzy drinks such as your

soda pops are filled with carbonation so

minimizing your intake of those as well

will be beneficial. I just want to make

you a little more aware of

I your FARTS, you know I don't like to

say that word it kind of sounds a little

unprofessional, but I think it's word

all of us can identify with; why you're

gas your wind does stink as well as

what causes you, what causes an

individual's body to produce a little

more gas than others.

The main take-home point that I want you

to focus on is realize that everybody's

body does have an odor figure out what

your odor is because different odors can

indicate different things which you may

need to see your medical provider about.

The FODMAP diet just wanted to emphasize

again it's found to be helpful for

people that do have IBS. So guys I do

The Science of Optimism: How Gender, Age, and Race Affect Your Outlook | William Magee - Duration: 9:45.

It's clear that in terms of optimistic positivity as a predictor of mortality it does predict

mortality, and it predicts mortality when you control for lots of different self-reported

health problems, depression, scales that have been validated, self-reported health.

If you're interested in predicting things from optimism—or optimistic positivity—you

want to look at what predicts it.

And that's what I was focusing on in that first paper.

So we have three papers already started.

Basically we're looking at explicit measures of optimism as well as these—we're using

wording effects to measure what we're calling implicit measures of perceptual optimism and

pessimism.

That positive wording bias is a form of optimism.

But if you're looking at the world in more positive ways you're taking information

in and you're framing it in positive ways.

And you're seeing it so you're reacting to it in positive ways.

Sometimes in a way that you don't even know that you're doing, right?

It's so subtle, it's like a wording effect that you couldn't say—it's not like

I'm asking you: Are you responding this way to these words or that way to those words?

We can detect it statistically over people.

So when you're asking people to say things about themselves on a survey, for example,

you're asking them: "Are you a good person?

Are you a competent person?"

There's a whole series of questions you can ask them.

Some of them are worded positively, some of them negatively, and usually those wordings,

those survey questions are used to create scales of things like self-esteem, self-efficacy,

mastery.

And there's a latent variable.

The idea is that there's something out there that is latent, and it explains some variance

in how people answer these questions.

And we're putting that together with some measures that ask people about how optimistic

they are using language, explicitly, and saying that together those things create this phenomena.

And we're saying that the phenomena goes deep, to the level of perception.

Is it itself a form of stratification?

Is there something about optimism that's a resource that we can understand as a psychological

good, like happiness, right.

And so if it's stratified in a population how is it associated with other kinds of stratification—income

and so forth, education?

And so you're saying, well: class.

The real interesting one is class, right?

Everybody wants to know: "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, think positively, you'll

be successful.

If you're optimistic you'll be successful."

But of course if you're successful you're going to be optimistic so there's the reverse

causality thing, and so taking a class and looking at classes is a really interesting

part that I want to get to.

And I think that's an interesting question because there's a lot of theory around sociology

and emotions, around the idea that expectations are created.

The ability to meet expectations generates energy.

That energy is what allows people to do things, that emotional energy.

And then it replicates itself.

So people are convinced to be optimistic, especially the middle classes.

And if they're not able to achieve those expectations then their energy goes down,

and they become dissatisfied.

There's some difference with cohorts.

I know I see with race difference, I see cohort differences.

When you were born.

And that makes sense in terms of things like the civil rights movement and what you experienced

in your life, right?

And in your hopes and dreams and so forth.

But the question I'm looking at now first, of course, is while you can't change, you

know there's not much way that your optimism or pessimism is going to change your gender

in a statistically significant way.

It might change.

People can change their genders.

But it's not going to change your age.

It's not going to change your birth cohort.

And race, very small effect.

So I'm looking at those things that influence, that can be understood as causes of, and they

can't be reverse causality first.

So that's what I've been doing, and we ran these models, and what do we see?

Well we saw that when you look at all these things—race, birth cohort, age and gender—together,

that there's these curves.

And the curves are interesting.

They start off with men being more optimistic than women.

There's a convergence in midlife and then a divergence again where men are more optimistic,

optimistic positivity, higher optimistic positivity than women.

We see race trends, and those vary by cohort.

People born before 1932: whites are more optimistic than blacks.

For all these people optimism, optimistic positivity, declines with age.

So we're seeing these trends over time declining with age.

But whites are more optimistic than blacks and it's declining.

But for people born after 1932 we see blacks having higher levels of optimistic positivity—these

are Americans, right, all U.S. data—having higher levels of optimistic positivity than

whites over the age period.

They're still declining.

That's optimistic positivity.

What about pessimistic negativity, right?

Blacks are consistently higher than whites in this pessimistic negativity across cohorts.

So we can look at those things and say, you know, people who got more schooling past high

school, they were optimistic when we first measured them and they were more likely to

get some schooling, and we can try to control for other things and say it's really the

optimism that's influencing the schooling.

We could also try to say their class background is influencing their optimism and pessimism.

And I think that's—we're in a better position to say something about that.

We can look at them over 25 years.

We don't have what you were born with, right?

We don't have what you started off with.

We do have what your parents, what income your parents made, how much schooling you

got and so forth.

What I was thinking about this was that, I really came of age, I graduated high school

in 1976.

We had society programs in place.

There was really opportunity for people who—I went to Somerville High but at that time it

was called "Slum-erville".

It's a place now that's very—houses worth millions of dollars and so forth.

But at that time it was a working class neighborhood.

I wasn't a great student.

I got into university.

I did well in university because the only option I saw was joining the air force or

the army.

And now I'm a professor, right.

So I was thinking about my career in terms of this project and the opportunities I've

had.

And I mean I'm a pessimistic person, but I took advantage of the opportunities because

I saw that there were doors.

The way society is structured is that there's doors and if you can jump through them it

doesn't really matter what your skill is that much.

Their divisions are fine grained and if you can get through that door you get all sorts

of resources and then you're going to get to the next level.

So I became optimistic about academia in a way that allowed me to continue to put my

nose to the grindstone and not to think too much about it because the resources were there.

I made the decision.

But really the point I wanted to make was these policies, these programs, kids don't

have them anymore.

Now I teach, and the kids see that the middle is getting hollowed out.

And they're anxious.

Mental health problems in university have gone through the roof.

And the universities don't know how to deal with it.

And I can see why they have, because the opportunities aren't there and the kids realize that there's

a bifurcation, right.

There's a make it or break it.

So I look at myself, I look at my own history, and I say I was in the tail-end of the Baby

Boom and I profited economically in some ways, socially in some ways.

But in other ways maybe not.

And so I look at these generational differences now and I can understand now going back to

business, right, going in: Somebody gets a job in the Gig Economy, right?

What's their mentality like?

"There's another gig down the road, I'll make it work to the extent I can," or has

it become like, "This has to really work and if this doesn't work I'm screwed in

my career."

I don't really know.

I don't think anybody really knows what's happening in these areas that you're interested

in, in terms of work and what the possibilities are.

There are some interesting questions that you have to ask.
