James: So, I'd like to think that through 20-plus reviews, I've established that I

can take a movie at face value, but just as a reminder, I did recommend the movie Rampage

- albeit in a review where I was dragging Skyscraper.

The reason I was so hard on Skyscraper is the same reason I'm going to be hard on

The Meg - it takes itself way too seriously.

Unlike Skyscraper, there are intentionally schlocky moments in The Meg - some of which I suspect

were the product of reshoots - but they're mixed in with some of the most dour, boring,

poorly-written moments of exposition since...well, Skyscraper.

It takes entirely too long to get to the good stuff, and while I will admit that I enjoyed

the third act payoff, getting there was a slog.

On the positive side, the acting was mostly fine, which is to say the actors did what

they could to not look too stupid, the CGI is actually pretty decent, and the cinematography

by frequent Clint Eastwood collaborator Tom Stern is excellent.

Unfortunately, those things just aren't enough to save this film from the script's

inconsistent tone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

if you're going to go for schlock, really go for it.

Stop trying to make obvious B-movies into summer tentpole franchise-starters.

This could have been a fun movie.

No, this SHOULD have been a fun movie.

For me, it was a drag.

Kevin: Ahem...

Kevin: My colleague could not be more wrong about The Meg if he tried.

The reason The Meg works is because it doesn't take itself very seriously.

There's very little attempt at character development for anyone but the essential characters

and when it does get going it hits a home run for the type of campy, absurd action

pieces you want from the movie.

Just because this is a B-movie does not mean it has to spend literally no

time doing anything else. Most great B-movies you remember at least make a faint

effort towards character development.

To me The Meg strikes the right balance of giving you a few characters you care about,

some you absolutely don't, and then unleashing a giant shark on all of them.

I do have a criticism though, and it's one I'm normally loathe to level at any movie

but here it goes: this should have been rated R.

As silly as some of the sequences later become, it would have been helped even more if they

had gone even further over the top with them, in much the same way Piranha 3D

did years ago.

Ultimately, The Meg does what it says it was going to: it has a badass Jason Statham fight a giant prehistoric

shark to the death.

That's all I wanted or needed from it, and I don't understand why anyone would need

anything more.

Hello and welcome on my channel.

Today I test the electric car of the Germans Post or, better, the subsidiary

Streetscooter from Aachen.

With over 5000 vehicles in delivery mode many already have such

Street scooter is from a research initiative The RWTH Aachen emerged and became in the year

I first read Rich Dad Poor Dad about 16 years ago or so and it honestly has had

more impact on my finances and probably any other personal finance or money book

and you would think because it's generally a real estate investing book

that I would be you know heavily into real estate investing that's why it

would have been so inspirational but it actually was one or two other little

points that he made the book that I think a lot of people actually overlook

and miss that have just had a radical impact of my finances so in this video

I'm gonna talk about one of the kind of little-known secrets that he kind of

dropped in this book that I think a whole bunch of people miss and that if

you get a hold of it it really can absolutely just change your financial future

Hi and if we haven't met my name is Bob Lotich so glad you're here and on this

channel what we do is we give you tips and strategies and how to put more money

in your pocket and then we also talk about some of the timeless biblical

principles on how to manage that money wisely so if that's something that

as you create more content but also as we go to this video I'd love to hear if

you have any comments I'd love to hear when you read Rich Dad Poor Dad and kind

of what some of your big takeaways were so if you can share those down in the

comments I would love to read them and love to respond back to you on any of them

so with all that out of the way let's kind of dive into this one lesson

that changed everything for me

all right in this lesson I'm gonna talk

a little bit about my kind of overall philosophy and strategy for buying things

and I'm not talking at all about consumables and about food or toilet

paper or anything like that although some of this would apply to that but a

lot of it won't but I'm talking more about products and things that we would

be buying that would last any certain amount of time and they typically

depreciate in value and I have one question that kind of circles through my

brain whenever I'm buying anything and that question is how much will I be

able to sell this for in a year or two or whenever I'm done using it

and by asking myself that question it forces me to make a smart buying decision

and not buy some things that you know would have no value in a few years or find better

ways or smarter ways to buy them and then sell them

and the way I challenge myself is that I want to sell something a few

years down the road for the same price that I bought it at now and I've been

successful with that with some items and a lot of times I'm not successful but

the goal is to get as close to that point as possible

so when I buy something at say $100 I would love to be able to sell it at $100

and that's kind of my goal with any purchase that I make

so there are three key principles that I kind of want to elaborate on in this video that tie into

this and the first one is to buy low second one is to buy things that hold

value and that are in demand and then the third one is to sell high and so

we'll dive into all those in just a minute but let me step back a second and

kind of explain how I came to kind of view my buying decisions in this through

this lens and for me it all started reading Robert Kiyosaki's book

Rich Dad Poor Dad many many years ago and one of the

things he said in that book was he said rich people focus on buying assets

rather than buying liabilities and not rich people focus on buying a lot more

liabilities and don't buy very many assets and he defined asset is anything

that puts money in your pocket and a liability is anything that takes money

out of your pocket so for example in the book Robert would have said that it's

good to buy and a house that you're renting out that's generating income for

you because it's plenty money in your pocket and that's an asset and that's

helping you build wealth as opposed to spending that money on a vacation or

something that is taking money out of your pocket you know in the asset

categories he might also include maybe a stock that's earned any money really any

kind of investment or anything along those lines and then anything in the

liability category is anything that you're paying money for and that you're

not getting that money back over the years of just kind of thinking through

this I determined that I just didn't want to lose any money to depreciation

on anything and while that's not always possible I think we can do a good job of

minimizing the amount of depreciation and that's where these three principles

come in so the first one is buying low and so the key here is to find the best

place to buy it and the best way to buy it so like we talked about in the online

shopping trifecta that I use it's a strategy that I've worked on to really

minimize the price I'm paying up on any particular object now that's

something that I'm buying that's new but honestly ideally I'd much rather buy it

used then eBay is a great place for this because you can find what the real value

of an item is because it's a worldwide market and essentially whatever things

are selling for on eBay is a very accurate measuring stick for what

something is actually worth and what the market says that it's worth so whether

that's a used iPhone or whether that's a piece of luggage or a vacuum cleaner or

whatever it is essentially you're gonna be able to tell what an item is actually

worth based on what it's selling for on eBay so for me whenever possible if I

can buy something on eBay buy something on Craigslist at a lower price than I

can get it new I take advantage of those offers it's just a great way to minimize

the amount of depreciation that that particular item is going to have

additionally when you buy something on eBay

and as long as it's not something that's going to depreciate really fast so

consumer electronics are gonna be have a really quick depreciation curve but a

lot of things that you buy on eBay if you try to sell them a year or two later

oftentimes you can get pretty close by selling them on eBay to what you paid

for them and I've even had instances where I actually made more selling it

just a couple years later so just by using eBay you can possibly get really

really close to reaching this goal of selling the item you just bought at the

price that you bought it for all right and so the next principle here is to buy

things that hold value and that are in demand and this also is where eBay is

gonna be really really helpful because you can find out you can see what things

are in demand what people are bidding on and you can learn what those brands are

that people are seeking after because that's a really key part of it because

you can buy something that's a no-name brand that might be just slightly

cheaper than something that is a name-brand but oftentimes a name-brand

is going to be able to sell for a much higher price you know two years down the

road and so that's something that I'm always keeping in mind so I do like to

get the lowest price possible but sometimes it makes sense to spend a

little bit more to get a name-brand that's going to hold its value a lot

more than something that's going to be worth noting that

might be a little bit cheaper now so for example if you go to Walmart you might

be able to buy a pair of dress shoes for forty or fifty dollars but two years

from now you're not going to be able to sell them for a dime on the other hand

back when I was working in a corporate office I had to have nice dress shoes

and I realized that I could buy Allen Edmonds dress shoes on ebay for about

the same price forty or fifty bucks and these are three four hundred dollar

shoes that I mean in my case I was able to find some they were in pretty good

shape and they looked great and I just kind of washed him out get them all

cleaned up a little bit and then I had really really nice shoes for the same

price as what I would have gone into Walmart and bought and then additionally

the extra benefit of this and not on on top of having much much better shoes is

that I was able to sell them years later for the same price that I bought them

for so the magic of this is that I get to have something that's really really

good and that it essentially doesn't cost me anything to use it because I'm

buying and selling it for the same price so when you start thinking about this

and you see the potential of what's here by kind of shifting the way you make

some of your buying decisions it gets really exciting yeah another example I

always love telling people about is many years ago my sister had an old tourist

that she was trading in to the dealer and the dealer wasn't gonna give her

much for it they were gonna give her $1,000 and I think Blue Book value on it

was like 1,700 bucks or something like that and so they were gonna give her a

thousand bucks and I said no I'll just buy it for a thousand bucks and so she

sold it to me I bought it for a thousand bucks I was working from home so we

didn't need it very often but I drove that car for it was about six years or

so until we ended up trading it into a dealer when we got a new car and then I

got a thousand bucks for it there so essentially we drove that car for six

years thought of her a thousand and sold it for a thousand so yeah that's always

fun when you take something that is one of the worst things in terms of

depreciation cars and do something like that so the key in this case was that

the the car had depreciated so much that it was pretty much gonna hold its value

you know so now they was it was almost it might have even been a ten year old

car at that point you know so much like it probably depreciated 90% off its

original value and the rate of depreciation just

slows down so much at that point that I was able to hang on to it for six years

and essentially and sell it for what I bought it for and had I followed the

third principle I probably could have sold it for more than what I bought it

so that brings me to the third principle which is to sell high and actually I

should probably add to just sell at all because I think so many of us just buy

things and we let them sit in our garage or in our closets that we aren't using

for years and we're not doing anything with them they're just sitting in there

not doing anything and then when we die somebody's gonna take it to Goodwill I

think just selling it at all is a really really important thing to be thinking

about because we have all this value laying around us it's not being used and

for me it's craigslist and ebay those are the two places that I like to unload

and sell things there are times where their outlets make sense but craigslist

and ebay are probably the two best places to sell something and get top

dollar for it almost anything else is gonna be a convenience play so for

example there are websites that you can just mail them your phone and they will

send you a check and so you know you're earning less money for that convenience

factor but if you don't have any time that's still better than letting your

old phone sit in a box and when it comes to deciding between craigslist and ebay

that's pretty simple for me basically anything that isn't gonna cost too much

money to ship I will sell on eBay because eBay is probably gonna be the

best option because you're selling to a worldwide market versus craigslist is

just your local market so you're gonna have a lot more buyers in theory on eBay

than you would on Craigslist so anytime I can sell something on eBay I'd do it

there but certain things like a couch you know or something really heavy an

elliptical machine or whatever I'm not gonna try to sell that eBay because it's

gonna be cost prohibitive if I have to spend $150 to ship it or something like

that so so I saved they're really big and heavy awkward things for Craigslist

and then any of the smaller items will go on eBay and that that has worked out

as a pretty good system kind of for determining what the best place to sell

it is so anyway so that's just a little bit of how I process my buying decisions

and how it's really helped us make smarter decisions

and essentially have more things of value that we can sell at a later point

so I challenge you to ask yourself this question you know whatever you're buying

next and just be thinking about this week how much will I be able to sell

this particular item for and then I'd like to challenge you also to to

successfully buy something at a much lower price with the intent to be able

to sell it at a similar price a couple years down the road so just keep that in

mind as you're making buying decisions and I think it's gonna help

Got a Minute? 21 - The Meg DOUBLE-TAKE (SPOILER-FREE) - Duration: 2:24.

James: So, I'd like to think that through 20-plus reviews, I've established that I

can take a movie at face value, but just as a reminder, I did recommend the movie Rampage

- albeit in a review where I was dragging Skyscraper.

The reason I was so hard on Skyscraper is the same reason I'm going to be hard on

The Meg - it takes itself way too seriously.

Unlike Skyscraper, there are intentionally schlocky moments in The Meg - some of which I suspect

were the product of reshoots - but they're mixed in with some of the most dour, boring,

poorly-written moments of exposition since...well, Skyscraper.

It takes entirely too long to get to the good stuff, and while I will admit that I enjoyed

the third act payoff, getting there was a slog.

On the positive side, the acting was mostly fine, which is to say the actors did what

they could to not look too stupid, the CGI is actually pretty decent, and the cinematography

by frequent Clint Eastwood collaborator Tom Stern is excellent.

Unfortunately, those things just aren't enough to save this film from the script's

inconsistent tone.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:

if you're going to go for schlock, really go for it.

Stop trying to make obvious B-movies into summer tentpole franchise-starters.

This could have been a fun movie.

No, this SHOULD have been a fun movie.

For me, it was a drag.

Kevin: Ahem...

Kevin: My colleague could not be more wrong about The Meg if he tried.

The reason The Meg works is because it doesn't take itself very seriously.

There's very little attempt at character development for anyone but the essential characters

and when it does get going it hits a home run for the type of campy, absurd action

pieces you want from the movie.

Just because this is a B-movie does not mean it has to spend literally no

time doing anything else. Most great B-movies you remember at least make a faint

effort towards character development.

To me The Meg strikes the right balance of giving you a few characters you care about,

some you absolutely don't, and then unleashing a giant shark on all of them.

I do have a criticism though, and it's one I'm normally loathe to level at any movie

but here it goes: this should have been rated R.

As silly as some of the sequences later become, it would have been helped even more if they

had gone even further over the top with them, in much the same way Piranha 3D

did years ago.

Ultimately, The Meg does what it says it was going to: it has a badass Jason Statham fight a giant prehistoric

shark to the death.

That's all I wanted or needed from it, and I don't understand why anyone would need

anything more.

Reading Plus: The Research-Proven Way to Develop Successful Independent Readers - Duration: 2:57.

For years, schools have wrestled with the challenge of how to help all students become

successful independent readers.

To meet the individual needs of each developing reader, schools are increasingly investing

in technology – in digital tools that promise differentiated instruction and provide students

with leveled texts to read or targeted skill instruction.

But, unfortunately, while technology use is increasing, student achievement is not.

In fact, reading scores haven't changed much in 25 years.

And two thirds of students read below proficiency level.

Why?

Because for independent readers, the technology isn't providing what they actually need.

When students read independently, their physical skills, cognitive abilities, and emotions

are all working simultaneously.

As a result, to develop independent readers, instruction plans need to integrate these

skills and abilities.

But most digital tools don't integrate - they isolate - or overlook them completely.

Let's look at an example.

Here's Carla, a 7th grader.

Carla's instruction plan calls for her to read text matched to her current ability level.

Here's an eye-movement recording of Carla.

The dot tracks her eye movement as she reads that text.

Even though Carla knows the vocabulary in this text, her eyes stop, start, and move

inefficiently across the page.

Now, here's an eye movement recording of a reader with efficient physical skills.

Carla is using almost all of her energy just to take in the words on the page.

She has little left to develop her comprehension skills or her interest in reading.

For Carla, using a digital tool to read leveled texts or to receive explicit skill instruction

isn't enough.

Neither approach will develop the physical efficiency she needs to become a successful

independent reader.

The result for Carla – and too many students like her – is that she'll continue to

struggle, fall behind, and lose confidence and motivation.

That's why Reading Plus provides students with integrated, personalized instruction

in all three domains of reading.

The Physical domain: To develop the silent reading fluency and stamina required to support

comprehension and make reading more comfortable, enjoyable, and productive.

The Cognitive domain: To build the academic vocabulary and comprehension skills required

for close and critical reading.

Waves plug-in number one is the CLA-76.

Now this is an emulation of a classic 1176 compressor, one of the most famous, well-known

compressors of all time.

And this compressor has a very bright, fast sound.

So it works very well on rock vocals, really things you want to bring forward and add energy

and urgency to in your mixes.

So I really like using this compressor on vocals.

It's one of my go-to compressors whenever I'm trying to bring things forward and make

things sound brighter and more aggressive.

And that blue stripe setting on this compressor - which is an emulation of an older model

of the 1176 - has a little bit more distortion and aggression to it which can work really

well on rock vocals, or things you want to add a little bit more of that kind of grit

and distortion to.

Waves plug-in number two is the Renaissance Bass.

Now this is a sub-harmonic synthesizer, meaning it actually creates harmonics that add density

and weight to the low end.

So whenever you have a sound in your mix - let's say a bass - that's not really giving you

that low end weight and density that you're looking for, maybe you tried adding some low

end on an EQ but it's not really working, this would be a plug-in I would reach for.

And just by dialing in a little bit of those harmonics, those sub-harmonics, you can kind

of trick the ear into thinking there's a lot more low end than is actually there.

So this is a great tool to add density and weight to your low end.

And if you're struggling to craft a low end that really sounds thick and weight-y,

this plug-in is a great resource.

Waves plug-in number three is the Renaissance Compressor.

Now this is a compressor that Waves released awhile ago, it's one of their earlier plug-ins.

And it's a fantastic all-around workhorse compressor.

So if you're looking for one compressor that'll sound pretty good on whatever you

put it on, this is a great choice.

It gives you flexibility, control over attack, release, threshold, ratio.

You just get lots of flexibility with this plug-in.

And if I had one compressor, this would be one of my go-to choices for sure.

Waves plug-in number four is H-Delay.

H-Delay is a delay plug-in which sounds kind of simple on the surface and, you know, you

might be thinking well why do I need another delay plug-in?

Don't all delays kind of do the same thing?

This is a plug-in that gives you some flexibility that some of the other delay plug-ins out

there don't - mainly the analog saturation and some of the distortion that you can add

by using this tool.

So you have a lo-fi switch which can actually kind of round off some of the extremities

of the frequency spectrum, and make the delay sound a little bit more like a vintage delay

or a tape delay.

And then you have some analog modeling settings on this delay as well.

So I like using this delay when I'm trying to go for something with a little bit more

character and vibe to it, I really don't want a really clean, pristine sounding delay.

So this works really well on guitars, and just things I want to sound a little bit grittier

and dirtier.

Waves plug-in number five is Trans-X.

Now Trans-X is a transient enhancement manipulation tool.

So it actually allows you to bring out the transients or actually bring down the transients

in a vocal, in a drum hit.

And the transients are those initial impacts right on the beginning of the notes and the

hits in a performance, and they add energy and impact to a part.

They bring it forward in the mix.

So by having a tool that will allow you to manipulate these independently, you can either

make a track sound punchier, more aggressive, more urgent, bring it forward, or you can

round it off a little bit by pulling back those transients and actually push the track

back in the mix and make it sound a little bit softer and more gentle.

So this is a great tool, especially for drums when you're trying to add more impact, punch

to a kick drum or a snare drum.

It's a fantastic overall tool for transient manipulation, and I highly recommend if you're

looking for something that will allow you to manipulate the transients in your mixes,

you check out Trans-X.

The sixth Waves plug-in I recommend is the C4.

This is a multiband compressor which, it's one of the first multiband compressors that

really came out that sounded decent.

And it's actually still one of my go-to tools for multiband compression.

I also like the FabFilter multiband compressor, but this is a great quick and easy multiband

compressor if you're looking to compress independent areas of the frequency spectrum

and just have a little bit more control over compression across the frequency spectrum,

this is a great tool.

It just sounds great, gives you a lot of flexibility, and it's certainly one of the best multiband

compressors out there.

The seventh Waves plug-in I recommend is the CLA-2A, which is an emulation of a classic

LA-2A compressor.

Along with the 1176 this is one of the most famous compressors of all time.

And this has a much softer, gentler sound than the 1176.

So whenever you're working with tracks or parts in your song that you just want to control

dynamically but you want a gentler kind of compression that doesn't sound too aggressive,

this is my compressor of choice.

It's just a great all-around workhorse compressor.

Works well for vocals, especially in ballads, female vocals, softer songs, things like that.

It also sounds really good on bass.

So if you're, again, looking for a softer dynamic control then this is an absolutely

fantastic choice, and you can't go wrong with the CLA-2A.

The eighth Waves plug-in I recommend is the Doubler.

Now the Doubler seems like a very simple plug-in on the surface, but it's incredibly powerful.

This is a tool that will basically create doubles from an original performance by slightly

modifying the timing and the pitch of the original track, and then blending those doubles

in under the original performance.

And the effect is it thickens up the original track, almost like the difference between

a solo singer versus a choir, that kind of thickness and density that you get from multiple

people singing the same parts slightly differently.

Very similar effect to something like doubling.

And this is a tool that I really like using on vocals whenever I have a vocal that sounds

just a little bit thin and one-dimensional and I want to add some density and weight

to it.

I'll pull this plug-in up and blend some of those doubles in under the original track.

Fantastic plug-in used a lot in modern pop productions when you're trying to create

that thick larger-than-life vocal.

So if you're struggling with that, you're struggling to get your vocals to really cut

through the mix and feel dense and impactful, then this is definitely a plug-in that I recommend

checking out.

The ninth Waves plug-in I recommend is the IR-L. Now this is a plug-in that often gets

overlooked.

It's a convolution reverb player, meaning what you can actually do is import what's

called impulse responses into this plug-in.

And the way that impulse responses are created is somebody goes out into a real-world space

- maybe a church or an office - and they set up a microphone and take what's - and play

what's called an impulse that can be a loud clap or it can be a gunshot or something like

that, and they measure the acoustic response of that space.

So all the different echoes and the bouncing off the walls, and the ambience, all of that

gets basically recorded into this impulse response.

And you can import that impulse response into a plug-in like IR-L, and basically recreate

that same sense of space in your mixes.

So the same reverb that you might get if you go into a big church or an office or something

like that, you can actually have in your mixes using this plug-in.

Now something that's very cool about IR-L that a lot of people don't realize is that

Waves has actually included a five gigabyte library of impulse responses along with this

plug-in.

Now the catch is you have to download this separately.

It's not included with the plug-in itself.

And so a lot of people end up missing out on this.

But this library includes lots of different impulse responses from all sorts of spaces,

and so if you're looking for a way to create a really convincing sense of space and depth

and dimension in your mixes, I highly recommend that you check out this plug-in IR-L.

And the tenth Waves plug-in I recommend is V-Comp.

Now V-Comp is another plug-in that people often overlook because it's been around

for a really long time.

This is an emulation of a classic Neve compressor plug-in, and it sounds fantastic.

It's got a very soft, gentle response.

It tends to round off some of the high end a little bit.

So whenever I'm looking for a compressor that is a little bit gentler, that has a little

bit more of a kind of warm, round tonality to it, it doesn't sound too bright or aggressive,

this is my go-to compressor, or one of the compressors that I'll use.

The other one might be the CLA-2A, reaching for something like that.

But the truth is this is a great compressor.

I really like it on the mix bus.

So on certain tracks - particularly tracks that I want to sound a little bit softer - this

is a great mix bus compressor.

It also sounds great on individual tracks in your mix.

So just a great overall compressor, especially when you're looking for that softer, gentler

kind of sound.

Now before we wrap things up, I just want to say that you don't need all of these

plug-ins to make good mixes.

The truth is the stock plug-ins in your DAW are probably more than enough.

So if you're struggling, if you feel like your mixes don't sound that great, start

by mastering the tools you have before you go out and spend a whole bunch of money on

third-party plug-ins.
