Owners urge gov't to test-run BMWs to locate defects - Duration: 1:50.
Just this week, the Korean transport ministry banned people from driving BMW models affected
by the recent string of car fires... unless the car has already been taken in for an inspection.
BMW itself is facing criminal complaints from the owners... who now say the ban isn't enough
-- they want the cars tested in public.
Our Choi Si-young reports.
In a press briefing on Thursday, the owners of BMW cars called on the prime minister and
transport minister to publicly test the vehicles... to try and find any defects.
BMW Korea has said the faulty engine part known as EGR or Exhaust Gas Recirculation
is the cause of a series of engine fires,... but owners claim there may be other problems.
The owners suggested different types of tests.
They proposed running the BMW above the speed of 120 kilometers per hour with the air conditioning
on,... until it catches fire.
They said the test-run vehicle should be equipped with infrared, thermal detection cameras,
so they can trace the cause of fire when the vehicle actually bursts into flames.
They also proposed leaving the air conditioning running at full strength in a parked BMW...
to see if that leads to a fire.
Last Sunday, a parked BMW with the engine and air conditioning running suddenly caught
fire.
The owners went on to say the government should send one burnt BMW whose cause is not yet
identified to the U.S. transportation investigative agency for examination.
They said the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has the authority and expertise
to rule on the cause of fire.
The owners added that they will file a further police complaint tomorrow against Harald Kruger,
the chairman of the board of management for BMW, the public relations executive at BMW's
headquarters in Germany, and an executive at BMW Korea.
As of Thursday, a total of 40 BMWs have caught fire in Korea this year.

Red Light Traffic Cameras Don't Make Streets Safer: Study | Heavy.com
Many major U.S.
cities have hidden cameras to catch drivers who run red lights.
The automobile is a killer.
In the U.S., 36,675 people died in traffic accidents in 2014.
The year before, 2.3 million people were injured in traffic accidents.
During the past decade, over 438 U.S.
municipalities, including 36 of the 50 most populous cities, have employed electronic monitoring programs in order to reduce the number of accidents.
Red light camera programs specifically target drivers that run red lights.
In a study I co-authored with economist Paul J.
Fisher, we examined all police-recorded traffic accidents for three large Texas cities over a 12-year period – hundreds of thousands of accidents.
We found no evidence that red light cameras improve public safety.
They don't reduce the total number of vehicle accidents, the total number of individuals injured in accidents or the total number of incapacitating injuries that involve ambulance transport to a hospital.
Red light cameras.
In a red light camera program, a camera is installed in a location where it can take photos or video of vehicles as they pass through the intersection.
City employees or private contractors then review the photos.
If a vehicle is in the intersection when the light is red, then a ticket is sent to the person who registered the vehicle.
These programs aim to reduce cross-street collisions.
The idea is that drivers, fearing a higher chance that they will be fined, will be more likely to stop, lowering the number of angle, or "T-bone," accidents.
Evidence clearly shows that camera programs are effective at decreasing the number of vehicles running red lights.
In one study in Virginia, red light cameras reduced the number of total drivers running red lights by 67 percent.
However, cameras can have contradictory effects on traffic safety.
Some drivers who would have otherwise continued to proceed through the intersection when the light is yellow or red will now attempt to stop.
That means that the number of accidents caused by vehicles not stopping at a red light will likely decrease.
But the number of accidents from stopping at a red light – such as rear-end accidents – is likely to increase.
That's not an inconsequential side effect.
Some drivers will attempt to stop, accepting a higher risk of a non-angle accident like getting rear-ended, in order to avoid the expected fine.
The overall effect of a camera program on vehicle accidents and injuries depends on the net impact of these two effects.
Overall driver safety could increase or decrease.
Our study.
In our study, we focused on Houston, a major U.S.
city that operated a large camera program at 66 intersections between 2006 and 2010.
One reason we chose Houston is to take advantage of the natural experiment that occurred when city residents passed a referendum in November 2010 to ban the cameras.
We accessed detailed accident information on every traffic accident in Texas from 2003 to 2014 through a public records information request.
The data included the accident's precise geocoded location; the type of accident; whether the driver ran a red light; and details on any injuries.
When the Houston cameras were removed, angle accidents increased by 26 percent.
However, all other types of accidents decreased by 18 percent.
Approximately one-third of all Houston intersection accidents are angle accidents.
This suggests that the program's drawbacks canceled out its benefits.
Our study showed no evidence that cameras reduce the total number of accidents.
We estimate that total accidents are reduced by a statistically insignificant 3 percent after the cameras are turned off.
Likewise, there's no evidence that the camera program reduced the number of traffic-related injuries or the likelihood of incurring an incapacitating injury.
The elevated number of traffic accidents at urban intersections is a serious public health issue.
But our study shows that Houston's camera program was ineffective in improving traffic safety.
Electronic monitoring is not the solution.

good morning and how are you doing today today we're on the move
farewell to Granada leaving my no lovely Airbnb oh and we're off to Arcos de la
Frontera
and we are in Arcos it's a, Arcos del la Frontera, it's a smallish
village with a hilltop with a church and a fort on top that I will show you but
first let's show you my accommodation it's a nice airbnb, price and details as
usual will be below but this is the lounge sofa television cabinets
the kitchen is through here again there's everything fully equipped a
microwave washing machine oven plots pans fridge and put my food in the
fridge yet I do have some food waiting to put away their can't love little one
it kettle it's good then and via the bathroom to the bedroom again it's
obviously clean
and my shower lovely that just leaves the bedroom there's actually two
bedrooms here two double bed bedrooms so it can sleep four shutters on the
windows to block out the light and the noise there we go
towels provided the gentlemen who owns this is very nice he lives opposite so he's
there for information help if we need it he doesn't speak English
but he does know how to use a google translator so he's very helpful at a
bit of arm waving and pointing and using a google translator can get you all the
information you need there is Wi-Fi here very centrally located into Arcos
and there is also parking if you have a car here as well which is very nice safe
secure parking which is not on the street
a lot of places offer parking have it on the street this has it in a lock up
garage especially for that house so welcome now I'm feeling a bit under the
weather today so what I'm going to do cook supper with you and go to bed we'll
go see Arcos tomorrow

Victoria warned to brace for worst fire season in a decade - Duration: 7:33.
Record-breaking low rainfall in parts of Victoria is forcing the Country Fire Authority (CFA) to bring forward the start of its bushfire season
The agency has released its bushfire season outlook, and is warning Victorians to prepare for an extreme summer of fires
For the first time, fire restrictions will be introduced in Gippsland as early as September
CFA chief officer Steve Warrington said the season looked like it would be the worst in a decade
"Our primary concern is Gippsland, the north-eastern parts of Victoria as well, the Otways and certainly along the Murray," he said
"At the moment if we go on the current forecasts, and to some extent it's crystal balling, but the dams are down
The water content in the ground is quite low. "Large parts of the state have been in a few years of drought now
" Conditions in parts of the state, including East Gippsland, are the worst firefighters have seen since Black Saturday when 173 people died in February 2009
Fire season to 'start early, finish late' "[This is the] first time ever we'll introduce restrictions in Gippsland as early as September," he said
"That will take us right through to potentially April next year, so start early, finish late
"The conditions for this time of the year are really quite concerning for us, and that's unfortunately already being realised

Principal Robyn Francis said the school's fire equipment had been set up earlier than ever before
The school has five water tanks for firefighting, a back-up generator, and a deluge system to spray water over the school buildings if a fire threatens
"We usually have it in terms one and four. It's always up in those terms. This is the first time we've set it up in term three," Ms Francis said

In 1946, the New Bethel Baptist Church congregation of 400 met inside a Detroit bowling alley.
By 1951, the church had a home, a building.
Inside the church the 14-year-old daughter of pastor C.
Franklin recorded an album of spirituals called 'Songs of Faith.'.
That Aretha Franklin would become the Queen of Soul surely wasn't fathomed then, but the congregation, and the radio audience that listened to the church choir, knew that her voice must only have come from Heaven.
As the 76-year-old singer asked for prayers while in end-of-life hospice, a vigil was held at New Bethel just as the sun came up Wednesday as family, friends, and fans prayed for a peaceful passage for the icon.
Here's what you need to know:.
Founded in 1932, Aretha Franklin's Father C.L.
Franklin Would Become New Bethel Baptist Pastor in 1946.
When Franklin became pastor there were around 400 members and they met, it's said, in a Detroit bowling alley until a new building could be secured.
The congregation grew and grew.
The new church seated 2,500.
And it was renowned for its gospel choir and Franklin's sermons.
One singer wold become a legend.
Renowned For His Sermons, Which Were Broadcast Nationally, Pastor Franklin Was Called the 'Million Dollar Voice'.
Franklin was called the 'Million Dollar Voice.
' His sermons were not only broadcast and listened to by hundreds of thousands as his popularity grew during the '40s and '50s, but a New Bethel sermon, 'The Eagle Stirrith Her Nest,' was recorded and preserved by the Library of Congress.
Franklin was shot during a suspicious robbery at his home in 1979.
He was not killed but lay in a coma at his home for almost five years.
He died, after being moved to a nursing home, of heart failure in 1984.
It was reported at the time that with 10,000 attendees, it was the largest funeral held in Detroit.
The Rev.
Jesse Jackson delivered the eulogy.
The funeral was described as a "roaring four-hour display of oratory, music and hand-clapping.".
New Bethel Became a Center of the Civil Rights Movement & Many Notable People Have Been Eulogized There.
At the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, New Bethel became hub for civil rights movement events.
Pastor Franklin, as the chairman of the Detroit Council of Human Rights asked city officials to bless a 1963 march that is now known as the Detroit Walk to Freedom.
In a city where more than a quarter of residents were African-American, most lived poverty and in shoddy housing.
Franklin's "Declaration of Detroit" shined a light on conditions and brought the Rev.
Martin Luther King Jr to the march which drew more than 120,000, then the largest civil rights demonstration in the nation.
Two years later, a rally was held at the church to raise money for the Selma, AL, voter registration drive King was holding.
In November of 1965, Coretta Scott King delivered an address at the church and the following year, in October of 1966, Dr.
King delivered a speech at the annual men's day dinner.
A month later, at another rally held at the church, James Meredith spoke.
Activist Meredith had been shot during the 'March Against Fear in Mississippi' and was widely known.
New Bethel has been the site for the funerals of many preeminent African-Americans have been held at New Bethel including singer Dinah Washington, civil rights activist and union leader Nelson "Jack" Edwards in 1974 and soul singer David Ruffin of The Temptations in 1991.
A 1969 Shootout at the Church Between the Republic of New Africa & Police Left a Officer Dead & a Raid That Saw 100 Arrested & Two Charged.
According to Detroit Free Press archives, the Republic of New Africa rented the church out from Franklin for an event.
The group had two armed members posted outside the church on the city's near West Side.
Patrol officers stopped to question the men and, the paper reported, police converged on the church and were "met by heavy gunfire" and police "stormed the church." One officer was killed and one was injured.
Two men were charged at least 100 people were arrested and questioned, the Detroit Free Press reported.
Aretha Franklin Grew up in New Bethel & Recorded Her First Album There.
Aretha Often Visited the Church & it Was Not Uncommon For Her to Sing in Praise While at Service.
In 1987 Aretha Franklin recorded 'One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism,' at New Bethel.
The album was released by Arista label and re-released in 2003.
Over the years, indeed the decades, she often sang and in this 2016 video, can be heard stretching her vocal chords in praise.
A gifted piano player, though she leaned by ear and didn't read sheet music, Aretha came to New Bethe in 2016 and played and sang.

Hello there guys and girls,
welcome to another monthly channel update of mine.
Today I've got some big news for you.
I'm gonna do the most important stuff right at the beginning and then work my way through
all the explanations of the whys and hows.
So, originally this update was scripted as a fucking depressing piece but then I thought
I could as well turn it into something positive.
For all of you and me.
In short: The video schedule of at least one video a week is officially over.
Ded.
My streak lasted for almost two years now.
Bro, whanowa, why would you do such a thing?
Are you mad?
Yeah, I'm a little mad at YouTube as a whole.
But mostly I'm just frogging exhausted from all the work that I've done in 2017 and
early 2018.
That included a 40 hour day job, extra work on the side for the same company, extra work
on the side for RedArcade, extra work for my debut record which took two years to complete,
extra work organizing a small concert with five bands for our friend that passed (and
I was part of two of these bands), and extra work for the weekly uploads I've been doing.
Also I am trying to learn Spanish.
So that's like six or seven major different things in parallel that had me commuting between
four cities in the country and sitting at fucking desks for 14 hours a day.
Half of these obligations have come to a more or less natural ending now and it feels soooo
goooood to have a little more leisure time for instance to ride my bicycle.
Actually I uploaded far more than just one video a week if you include all the channel
updates and patreon exclusives.
Those alone were over 75 additional videos with a runtime of at least eight hours.
But whatever.
You might have noticed that in the past couple of weeks I didn't really upload much and
that was because I needed a break after creating the one hour Menyoo tutorial which in the
end didn't even perform all that well.
I think in the future I will go back to shorter, more specialized tutorials that are easier
to digest and help you get to the point quickly.
Slowing things down like this isn't an easy decision for me.
I've thought about this stuff long and hard, just like your dick if you had one.
Too personal?
I'm sorry.
Going from uploading a video every now and then to uploading every week was easier than
it is now, trying to go back to a more relaxed attitude.
Mostly because I don't wanna disappoint anyone of you.
And also because it's still fun – but it's more fun if you don't have the pressure
of a schedule.
Nonetheless I've really become some sort of a workaholic and I must try to find a way
to get off this drug.
Work is a hell of a drug.
And here's finally the positive thing about slowing down: Now I've got the freedom to
work on some projects more intensely, which I already am.
I'm doing a pretty dark and serious cinematic, like I've announced on twitter or wherever.
These are some test shots I did to get a look and feel for the short movie.
To wrap up the channel update: Thank you to anyone who supported me throughout these last

really kept me going and still do to this day.

On Wednesday, South Korea celebrated its liberation from Japanese imperial rule...
73 years ago.
To mark this occasion President Moon Jae-in gave a speech at a ceremony in Seoul, where
he also took the opportunity to talk more about the current situation with North Korea
and lay out his vision for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
But despite President Moon's ambitious assertions, it's far from a simple path, one riddled with
obstacles and complications, and which will not be resolved quickly.
We will discuss with a guest more about those issues, but first our chief Blue House correspondent
Shin Se-min has more from President Moon's address.
True liberation, he said, means putting an end to the division of the two Koreas.
Marking the 73rd anniversary of the end of Japanese colonial rule,...
President Moon Jae-in called on the people to overcome such division for Korea's survival
and development.
The President said that the development of relations between South and North is the driving
force that ultimately promotes the denuclearization of the region.
"Though political unity may still be far away, true liberation for us will come when there
are free exchanges between the two Koreas through the establishment of peace and the
forming of a joint economic community."
Forming a joint economic community,... the President said, would bring the Koreas some
150-billion U.S. dollars over the next 3 decades.
One of his government's plans is to physically connect the two through cross-border railways
and roads by the end of this year.
And his plans don't stop there--
"Today I propose the creation of the East Asian Railroad Community, which would include
the United States and six Northeast Asian nations.
This community will form an energy bloc in Northeast Asia by expanding Korea's economic
area to the northern part of the continent and becoming the basis of co-existence and
prosperity in the region."
And that,... he says,...will be the starting point for a multilateral security system in
Northeast Asia.
Though he did not specify the other four countries,... they are believed to be China, Russia and
Japan.
"The President then promised to continue building inter-Korean relations with a deeper level
of trust,... and said he would continue to lay the groundwork to expidite discussions
between Pyongyang and Washington about the nuclear issue.
