Off Grid Log Cabin Built by One Man: Making a Bear Escape Door? - Duration: 4:38.
Hello friends, this is Max Egorov
And you're watching the third part of the series of short videos on my successful attempt to colonize a totally wild and secluded place
last summer I started building my log cabin from extra thick logs
A lot of the tall trees here were downed by a severe storm a few years ago
So I decided to reclaim those 15 inch logs, which is about 40 cm
Frankly, I thought it would be fully done by now. Now looking back
I'll say this I could have built two cabins had I used skinny logs in their construction
Now here's a problem for you guys
Besides the fact that it is a good idea to have a back door
If a bear decides to camp at the front of the cabin, why do you think I made a second door?
Okay, so it's been decided the cabin is going to have two doors
Which means we will need four jack studs and two headers to frame both doors
My jack studs are actually logs with two jointed surfaces
As you can see it is easy to make a groove in the jack studs that will accept the logs' tenons
I made two cuts with my chainsaw and then quickly chisel the groove out
The last thing we need to do is to cut two tenon's on the jack stud
One rectangular shaped at the bottom and one that is long and round at the top. It is easily done with the handsaw and axe
I'm doing it in a few steps to make sure I don't remove too much material and get my tenon to be just right I
made the bottom tenon rectangular so that the jack stud wouldn't rotate in the base log
It is even easier to make a corresponding mortise
I just drilled two holes and chiseled out the rest of the wood in the mortise
As you might have seen in the previous episode you can easily hammer a square tenon into the rounded mortise
In fact, this is what professional carpenters do all the time
But I'm not a pro and can afford to act irrationally at times
So I took my time and rounded up the tenon only because I wanted to play with my homemade draw shave
I made from a ball bearing
Lastly I will chamfer the tenon and we are ready to install the jack stud
Note that I cut the jamb and stop for the door from one piece
It is easier to cut a stop separately though and add it later
I just decided to make it all from one piece of log because it is just quicker to do so with my primitive tools. I
have installed three jack studs, and now I will show you the installation process using the forth one. I
Used thin logs to make the jack studs and laid moss between all doorway members for better insulation. I
Was carefully fitting the doorway jack studs as it is easy to break off those tenons
Getting a piece of scrap wood to temporarily hold the jack start vertically helped
You might have noticed I have made 16 cm 6 inch long round tenons on the top of the jack studs
These extra long tenons will go through the header into the gable's top log
Be ready to reinstall each doorway member a few times as it is hard to achieve the necessary precision on the first try
To finish the door frames installation. I just need to assemble the gable
This drilled opening will serve a double purpose
I'm using it to check if the door frame is still vertical
But later is going to be a mortise for the doors top pin hinge
As you can see there is nothing technologically advanced in building a log cabin. I'm using the same techniques our ancestors used
thousands of years ago
P.S. it would be too boring to only build the log cabin during the whole month of my vacation
Simultaneously, I entertained myself with other interesting projects
I made a catamaran, build an earth oven, and made this external pack frame that I used to carry small trees
I was planting around the camp. So far I managed to transport and plant about
250 exotic deciduous trees over the years

You'll never guess my personal theme for 2019 - Dreams Around The World - Duration: 7:48.
Hey, Dan here. And it is 2090. Wow,
that is kind of cool and was freaking awesome. At least on my end.
Hopefully it was a great year for you. And hopefully you've caught my last couple of videos about making 2019 and even better year.
And in this video, I want to share my approach to looking forward on the year basically. And what I do rather than say New Year's resolutions are setting goals.
Now, a lot of people have success with setting really concrete goals, you know, I want to lose three pounds per month doing this.
And, you know, I want to earn X amount of dollars. Personally, that's never really worked for me. I don't know if it's a personality type thing, being an ENFP.
I don't know if it's just something else, you know the universe telling me something. But what has worked really well for me is setting an intention or a theme for the year and really looking at that.
So I've had years that have been about it adventure where it's like, hey, this year, I'm going to be traveling a lot, I'm going to be having a ton of fun.
As long as I don't go broke this year is a victory. You know, my first year when I left Canada, my goal for the year my theme I should say, not really a goal was to have as much fun as possible and be able to pay for it.
And that's what I did. I had an insane year that you're traveling to Costa Rica, you're driving super cars, going on road trips, going, skydiving, doing all this stuff.
And I came out of the year, you know, equal I didn't go in debt for that or anything. I earned what I needed to pay for this great lifestyle. Then I look at like last year 2018.
And my theme for the year at least from a business point of view was about kind of growing up a little bit and
starting to build a team starting to get some type of systems in place and get more organized in that. And the other theme for my year was to start connecting with more people.
And I hosted three events. One in Mexico, one here in Prague and one in Spain.
And that was really what I used to look at the year and of course, there were other goals and other things I worked on. But when I was looking forward to the years like, yeah,
I want to grow things become more organized and systemized as a business and also connect with people a lot more because that's something
I was missing doing a lot of my work online. Now I will get into my theme for 2019. But before I do I want to get into that for you.
What do you want 2019 to be about? You may even want to pause this video. And just take a little bit and think about the overall theme.
And before you do one thing I do want to mention is that sometimes we have a tendency to react when it comes to the theme.
So let's say you're someone who's not very organized and you have trouble sort of staying on top of things you might think, hey, my theme for is to become super organized. And I know I know, for my business, that was sort of my theme.
But can I share something honestly, that I didn't make that much progress on that, like, yes, my business is running way better.
I've actually pretty much doubled my business over the last year. I've had I'm really proud of the last year. But it didn't really come from becoming some insanely organized person and developing systems.
Because those aren't things that I'm great at a lot of what helped grow the business was having a team now doing things that really excite me like throwing event making more videos.
And so be careful when you're setting your theme that you don't react to something like if there's something that isn't a strong point for you.
But it may be isn't ever going to be a strong point. Maybe you're an ENFP and being really organized and structured isn't something you love.
So I don't know if I would make my entire theme for the year to be that you want to have something I think that will also
excite you so that there's some momentum to do it. So it is about becoming more structured then maybe tie that in with an another theme is well that will
be exciting for you and then you'll have the energy to push you forward to become organized as well. I hope that makes sense. I've talked about this in a few other videos as well where if your main focus is on something you don't really love, you're not
going to have nearly as much energy as if you put your focus on an even bigger, more exciting goal and then have the becoming organized or systemized as part of that. And that's actually what I learned over this year as well. When I did for myself set.
One of my major themes for the year around being organized and systemized and found it doesn't really excite me that much, even though the result of
becoming more organized, more structured really excites me having more freedom and having more possibilities of what I can actually do.
So looking forward to 2019, I was thinking about this actually, in one of my group calls while I was talking to other people about this. And I was thinking, actually, what is my theme for the year and I came to being scared, you know,
2018 was a great year for me, I really took care of my health, there's still some things I'd like to be doing. And maybe I'll get into that on another video.
But in terms of my health, I lost a bit of weight, I feel way more energized and better by business, as I said, is probably doubled over the year. And things are just good, I really happy one of the things that scares me a little bit is maybe becoming
too comfortable, you know, I'll think about doing things maybe taking a certain trip or living in a place that I've done before, when I had less resources.
And sometimes I feel a resistance to that now. And I worry maybe it's because of like my family history or something. But I worry about becoming a little too conservative or comfortable and losing some of that
courage that helped me originally create this life I have now and I know that kind of goes with becoming older and just life you know, people are younger, they take more wrist. And as you get older, you tend to take less risk
. And I really don't want that to happen, at least not too strongly. So I don't know how it will play out. But one of my themes for this next year is around being scared, doing things that challenged me again, going into the
unknown, taking on challenges that I don't know how I will solve when I take them on. But accepting them and then figuring it out as I go if I had to pick another part of the year as well. I think for me, it's around doing
even more in my strength and doing more fun things tied with that I have something I'm not quite ready to announce it. But something involving in person events and visiting a ton of different cities over the next year that really, really excites me and
it's all tied in with this theme of just making it more fun as well. Like I love my life. I love what I do. I think I have a pretty good gig in life that I've created for myself and I love you know, working with you guys and making these videos but I think
I can have even more fun on top of it all. So my theme for the year is to be scared and to have even more fun now it's your turn in the comments below.

Well good morning and Happy New Year! Welcome back to painting with Yovette,
and you know I was thinking, I can't think of a better way to start the New
Year than by remembering all of you wonderful viewers who have sent me
photos this past year in 2018. And so that's what I'm going to do today to
start the new year off. I'm going to give you a slideshow of your paintings! So
let's take a trip down memory lane!
Now wasn't that a fun trip down memory lane? I just I enjoyed that so much
putting it together. I hope you're enjoying it too, and I just want to thank
you all for sharing all of your wonderful photos, I just think you've all
improved so much and I just love seeing your your paintings! And so I had to do a
little editing and so I hope I didn't destroy anybody's painting too much. But

Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events: Season 3 Ending Explained - Duration: 4:15.
So Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events is actually a really good show, who would've
thought, right?
And Season 3 is, I'm glad to say, just as great as the previous two seasons.
It's honestly the perfect adaptation of the original books.
It's whimsical, eccentric, weird, lengthy, gives each novel's story time to shine,
the art direction is so amazing, and Neil Patrick Harris is awesome as Count Olaf.
No, he's no Jim Carrey, no one is, but he's still good.
Now the ending of the show, just like the original ending in the novel, is equally bittersweet
and melancholic, and ambiguous as well.
Let's break this down.
Now the second season consisted of four novels and ended with the carnivorous carnival.
Olaf successfully captured Sunny and we pick up with The Slippery Slope, as they're all
traveling down the Mortmain Mountains.
This is at the point in the series with the Baudelaires and the central mystery of V.F.D
and their parents' death begins to take place.
But if you know author Daniel Handler's style, he doesn't really like to outright
reveal or tie up all of the loose ends in this story.
So if you're looking for some closure, you ain't getting none.
Instead, A Series of Unfortunate Events concludes in a very reflective and poignant way, as
the villain the orphans were going up against all this time turns out to be the ultimate
good guy, and his sacrifice causes Violet, Sunny, and Klaus to pay their respects for
quite a long time.
I'm of course talking about Count Olaf.
Who, is in his dying breath, decides to save Kit and her unborn child before succumbing
to that deadly fungus on the island.
As the island and its inhabitants are consumed by the fungus and Kit passes away during childbirth,
the orphans are the only ones there taking care of the kid for around a year.
And during this time they visit Kit and Olaf's graves.
Let's stop right there for second.
The brilliant thing about this is that someone as vile and hateful as Count Olaf becomes
so sympathetic right in the end.
There was always this sense of sadness coming from the character.
Even though he loves ruining these kids' lives, there's this darkness and sadness
inside of him that can make anyone feel sorry for him.
And he realizes, perhaps too late but he still does realize, the wrongs he's committed.
He could have not helped Kit.
Olaf could have just stayed a bully until his last breath.
This shows that people can change for the better, and there's still good in all of
us.
I know I know, it all sounds corny and cliche, but it's effective.
On this Netflix show, and in the original novels, it's pulled off in a brilliant,
bittersweet, and beautiful way.
It's a fantastic character transformation.
But the ending becomes even better, well in my opinion, once you realize what the orphans
end up doing.
Inspired by an entry from their parents, Violet, Sunny, and Klaus make the ultimate decision
to leave the quiet, calm, and mostly safe life at the island and venture back into the
world.
This is brilliant on a few levels.
The orphans, even with Olaf and any threat gone as well, are still reluctant to go to
the real world.
Why?
Well, throughout their entire miserable journey, they weren't just bullied by Olaf.
Their many guardians, Mr. Poe, and plenty of other people around them let them down
constantly.
If it wasn't Olaf doing all sorts of bad stuff, it's almost everyone else blaming
the orphans for stuff they didn't do, bullying them, turning a blind eye to terrible things
constantly happening to them.
At this point in their lives, jaded and scarred, Violet, Sunny, and Klaus don't want to interact
with anyone else.
They hate society.
But they're still willing to give people a second chance.
Influenced by their parents of course, but most importantly looking at how someone as
vile as Olaf was capable of such a caring and kind act, showcasing that there's good
in everyone, the orphans pack up their things and venture forth on their boat.
It's unknown what happens to them.
It's unknown if they join V.F.D., just live normal lives, or if they perished in their
journey.
None of it matters, the central mysteries, don't matter.
None of it.
A Series of Unfortunate Events is a melancholic and tragic look at three kids facing the harshness
of the world and losing their innocence.
That's the real story here, the actual point.
It's to show the duality of the world.
How in one second you can face tragedy, and in the next be incredibly happy.
How your tranquil life can be turned upside down, hence the orphans parents' perishing
in that fire.
Like the orphans, we too have to go through incredible hardships and overcome all of it
to come out stronger and better.
And lastly, Olaf is a perfect showcase of what you can become if you let the worst parts
of the world get to you.
Let it make you angry and pessimistic and lonely and sad.
Count Olaf ultimately did not want to be the way he was.
That man saving a pregnant woman was who Olaf really was deep inside, he just was too scarred
to show it and live like that.
Like I said, A Series of Unfortunate Events ends on a bittersweet note, but it's still
quite the beautiful ending.
