How to have FUN in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico - Duration: 9:50.
Good morning from the port in Puerto Vallarta.
You get a clue behind me of what I'm about to do.
We're getting on a boat to go snorkelling
and I can't wait to get out on the water.
Buenos dias.
Buenos dias.
Gracias.
Thank you.
We've made it out to the water.
This is called the Bay of Banderas
and it's one of top five longest and deepest bays in the entire world,
so this is where we're going to spend the day.
We're headed now to a beach called Majahuitas
and the direct translation apparently of that is 'where the jungle meets the sea'
so I think that's going to basically describe the beach that we're on the lookout for right now.
It's gonna take a little while to get there so we're just relaxing,
Marc has taken his sea sickness pill…
Yeah.
And…and we're just…
I have my sea legs.
He's getting his sea legs back.
And, honestly, just being out on the boat with the waves like this I just instantly feel calmer,
so I'm just excited for everything that today's going to bring.
Hard to do that with one hand, eh?
Yeah.
A little tricky.
Easy on the pineapple juice.
Yeah.
Tequila!
But here's another surprise: the surprise is Mara!
Oh my god.
Mara, high five!
There you go.
Give it up for Mara!
Mara rocks!
Yeah!
Now do I have any brave volunteers to come down here and kiss Mara?
Kiss!
Smile!
Kiss her!
Wow.
She liked that one!
Ooh la la.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Smile!
Yeah.
I'm in love with a sea lion.
Smile over here.
Smile!
Now kiss her.
Ooh la la!
Mara, you got a boy!
You can pet her on her neck, if you like.
Aww.
Very nice.
So cool!
I'm in love with a sea lion.
I am too.
She's excited.
Mara, smile.
Black and sexy.
So, guys, once again, give Mara a big round of applause.
Yeah, shake it once again, Mara.
Shake it, shake, shake, shake.
Give it up for Mara!
Bye, Mara!
Nice.
Just got out of the water for the first time with the snorkels.
There were lots of fish.
Water was a little fresh when we first got in
but it actually felt really, really good after being on the boat.
Definitely awake now.
Yeah, it woke us up.
We saw a huge school of fish as soon as we jumped in the water.
Yeah, they were all around us as soon as I put my mask down which was really cool.
We didn't have to go to find them, they found us.
They found us.
Yeah.
It's like they were greeting us in the water.
Perfect place to snorkel.
I'm about to show you guys a trick
that only two people in the whole world knows how to do it.
One of them is obviously me and the other one is Harry Potter.
Hopefully it works.
Ready?
See the way it sticks?
Wow.
Awesome, right?
Time to get out, I know.
Too short always.
Saw some good fish though.
They have these cool like electric scooters or power snorkel
and so Marc is just jumping off the boat
and I'm going to watch him from up here
and then I want to try it myself.
We've never done this before.
Is it working?
Yeah.
I've seen SCUBA divers use these and I've always wanted to try one
so I know it's not the same thing but it's as close as I'm going to get today.
I'm very excited.
I like anything with the word 'power' in it.
I'm under the boat.
Look at how clear the water is.
Marc is going under the catamaran.
Bye!
Ok now I have to run around the boat,
without falling off the boat,
to try to catch him on the other side.
Ok.
Woo!
Motorin' motorin'.
I'm not really motoring at all.
You're still kicking, I see.
I could probably swim faster.
Arriba!
Viva Mexico!
So fun, right?
That is so much fun.
It's like riding a bull.
It's like you're riding a bull in Calgary.
My cowboy, inner cowboy, came right out there.
Oh my god, so fun.
That was wicked.
Banana boat, check.
So nice.
This is the life.
So we did snorkel,
then power snorkel,
then banana boat,
then inner tube,
then lily pad.
Yeah.
Not a bad afternoon.
All at one beach.
That is awesome.
Love it.
Sitting at the front of the boat heading back towards Puerto Vallarta,
and seeing the city on the horizon,
with this delicious bento box lunch,
and just knowing the beautiful fish and the sea lions
and all those other creatures that are underneath the waves that we're looking at now,
it just does not get better.
It's been an amazing day.
So, so much fun to get out on the water.
I hope you guys have enjoyed it.
Give this video a like, if you did,
and remember to subscribe for lots more travel adventures
and I'll see you in the next one.
It's my happy dance.

What HAPPENED To The Player Who LOCKED Up Zion Williamson? (Ft. Nassir Little, NBA Wingspan) - Duration: 5:26.
Remember this guy?
Yeah the Zion stopper, the guy with a over 7 foot wingspan, Nassir Little is a college
freshmen that has slipped off the radar.
So what happened to him?
What is up dudes, dudettes, ballers, player.
It's ya boi MJ.
Nassir Little had a good game yesterday, but apart from that, has really dipped from the
limelight.
He was ranked higher than Zion in certain draftboards and ranked in the top 5 in almost
all lists, but now no one's been talking about him so I thought, it's time to revisit
Nassir Little.
Hit that like button for Nassir Little's lost dreads, 3123 and to let me know you want
more of these types of videos.
I got one more video coming on Friday this week.
And let's get into it.
Nassir Little is a 6' 7", 215 pound small forward that is a freshman in UNC.
He also has a 7' 2" wingspan.
Yeah he's a freak.
Nassir always prided himself on his defense and his ability to lock anyone up.
He puts 120% effort and in high school won McDonald's All American Game MVP, Jordan
Brand Classic MVP.
What put him into the spotlight was how his offense matured and he became a two way player.
Like I said before in my previous video, no one wants to see Roberson play.
If you wanna see a more in depth breakdown on Nassir Little's game in high school,
check that video out.
Now Nassir Little could have chosen from a whole host of colleges, but he picked UNC
because of the challenge.
UNC is a school with great basketball history, but it is notoriously known for being hard
on freshmen.
Highly ranked freshmen aren't guaranteed a starting spot there.
UNC is not big on one-and-done culture, but the way Nassir is, he really liked that challenge
of earning a spot rather than being given one.
So Nassir Little came onto UNC and had to work for the starting spot.
To this point, Nassir Little is still coming off the bench averaging 9.8 points per game
on about 50% shooting from the field but 20% from 3.
It's been bad.
He just hasn't really found his rhythm on his jumpshot and the inconsistency hasn't
made Nassir dependable.
Not only that, but Nassir has been struggling defensively.
Yes, his strength has kinda become a weakness.
Nassir thought that he just needed put more effort to locked his defender up like he did
in high school where he could just reach up and block a shot or like what he did when
matched up with Zion.
But one-on-one defense is only a part of defense.
What Nassir is struggling with is team defense, learning rotations, weakside defense, helping
on pick and rolls.
While Nassir was practicing, he just didn't know where he should be on the floor.
He seems to be overthinking team concepts.
The UNC coach Roy Williams has even said there's one way for Nassir to crack the starting lineup,
just play better.
Damn.
But he's not wrong.
Nassir has had games where he's put up 2 points, 4 points in 20 minutes of playing
time.
He's not making an offensive impact and on the defensive side of things, he's not
doing too great either because he's not a good team defender.
His confidence is dwindling.
What makes this all worse is his comparisons.
His competition in the freshmen class like Zion and RJ have been balling out, getting
minutes, playing well, and receiving attention.
It's similar to Jaylen Hands, kinda wanna do a video on him.
Big high school prospect that has fizzled out and been average in college.
It's already 17 games in the season and Nassir has still yet to show what made him
a top 5 prospect.
Nassir has fallen in the mock NBA drafts down to around the 12 mark compared to being a
top 5 pick before the season started.
Nassir might even stay a year.
(sigh)
I want Nassir to be great and he's a demigod, he's gifted and more importantly, he's
got hard work ethic in his DNA.
He can really be great and I love that he wanted to take on a challenge and so he chose
UNC.
Honestly, yesterday's game was a great sign that he can help his team win.
I mean UNC is 13-4.
I just want to see him play consistently well, but as of right now, Nassir has been declining
and that's what's happened to the Zion stopper.
But what do you think?
Can Nassir Little turn it around?
Where will he end up in the NBA?
I got another video coming Friday so stay tuned.
Drop a like for Nassir Little being not so little.

BREAKING: Buhari Expresses Doubts About Ganduje 'Bribery' Videos - Duration: 2:24.
BREAKING: Buhari Expresses Doubts About Ganduje 'Bribery' Videos
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed doubts about the videos portraying Abdullahi Ganduje, Governor of Kano State, as receiving what appeared to be kickbacks from a contractor.
He stated this while responding to a question on the subject at a townhall event organised, tagged 'The Candidates'. The event held at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja on Wednesday night, courtesy of MacArthur Foundation.
While answering a question on why he seemed not to mind the corruption allegation against Ganduje, Buhari said: "Can Ganduje fail to trust somebody to give the money to him?.
"That clip, somebody brought it to me of how the Kano Governor was receiving dollars and smiling and putting it in his pocket.
I don't know the extent of technology used and I can't answer now because the state assembly has gone to court I decided not to talk about it, and the state assembly constitutionally could have dealt with that but then I heard the matter was taken to court," Buhari said.
The moderator asked if the President believes the video is fake or real but Vice President Osinbajo tried to intervene. Ath this point, the moderator cuts him short, saying: "he can talk for himself.".
Buhari's reply was: "As I told you, I've seen the clip; I don't know how much technology was used but can Ganduje fail to get somebody to get the money to him [and] he has to take it directly himself, smiling?.
"I honestly am completely overwhelmed and the system has given me some relief; it's in the court, it is in the state assembly so let them as much as possible deal with it.
This thing has received a lot of publicity and I hope by the time I go on my campaign for re-election there will be some answers from the court and the state assembly in Kano state about the…".

How To Remote Control Your Android Device | Viewfinder Edition - Duration: 7:21.
Hello techies this is Miguelina Betty aka Catwoman from Tech Valor. For this
video I will teach you how to remote control your Android device. I came
across this solution when I was looking for a viewfinder for my android phone.
The rear camera of a phone has the best quality and I like to find ways to take
full advantage of it. Apps You Will need. TeamViewer is an app
used to help provide remote technical support to mobile devices and PCs. One of
the cool features is that you can remote control an Android device. You will want
to install Teamviewer QuickSupport app on the device that will act as a puppet.
For this example, I we will be using my Note 9. Because I am using a Samsung
device I will also need to install the Add-On Samsung app. This provides special
permissions so that the device can be remote controlled. Without this add-on it will
not work. If you have another brand of Android, device make sure that you
install that one that corresponds. Next, you will need to install the TeamViewer
Remote Control app on the device that will act as a puppeteer. In this example
I will be using my Apple iPad Air 2.
You cannot remote control an Apple device with TeamViewer. You can only
view the screen that has the Teamviewer QuickSupport app installed.
You could control an Android device with another Android device or even an Apple
device. Setting up the connection. All right techies, so I wanted to let you
know how to set this up here we have an Android device and then here's an iPad
that I have. This is using the Teamviewer QuickSupport and this one is just using
the regular Teamviwer app. Now, I want to let you know that if you try to
connect to this app without the Teamviewer QuickSupport being open it's
not gonna work. Which is awesome because of security. For example, I'll show
you guys here if I'm out of the app, even if I have it open in the background, and I
try to remote in, it's gonna say that it's unable to connect. So you actually
need to have this open. There we go, so now I'm gonna hit remote in it's gonna
ask me for permission. I'm going to hit allow and then... Here. Now everything that you do on
this will happen over here which is awesome. What I like to use this a lot
for is to use it to use the camera, okay. So we're just gonna go to the camera app
over here so everything that the camera sees you can see it over here which is
great. Now, if you're using it here like portrait mode, this is perfect but a lot
of the times people are gonna be recording and they're gonna have an
angle like this. You see where there's a problem? So all you need to do is just
move your tablet this way.
And I'll show you guys is something really cool. So everything that you do
here is gonna focus here on this camera. So for example, let's say I'm looking at
this little cat woman right and I want to focus in. BAM. It'll focus in. If I
click here then it'll focus in. If I want to move to other types of modes, I can do
that. Here's selfie mode. And so what I'm gonna demonstrate you guys is if you
wanted it to use the rear camera. You know, if you wanted it to use the rear
camera to videotape yourself and that way you don't have to use the... I know
some people use a mirror. El Jefe uses a mirror. This is
just another way of doing it without having to use like a really big setup.
You can close in a little bit and then you can actually control it. You
don't have to get up and move and go from one side to the next. So I'll show
you guys that example next. My Set Up.
Hello techies this is Miguelina Betty aka Catwoman from Tech Valor... So here I
am breaking the fourth production wall, again. And I'm gonna show you guys how I
have this set up. So here I have my phone and right here I have a wide-angle lens
because when I record it punches in. And that way I don't have to be so far away.
Then I have the iPad right here looking at what I'm doing and I'm, you know,
controlling everything. And if I need to control the brightness or anything like that
like... I can do it Then I'm connected here with
my little lapel mic. So this would be a set up that you would want to have done
so that you don't have to use another apparatus where you would have to then
get up and move and see what you're doing and you can take full advantage of
the rear camera that you have with your Android phone. Conclusion. Here's another
tip, you can use this method if you are using an Android camera on top of a rig.
That way you can make sure that the camera is in focus.
I hope this method helps you with your setup and inspires you to think outside
of the box. If you have any questions or come across any roadblocks, leave a
comment down below and I'll do my best to help you. If you found this beneficial,
please give this video a like and also share with others who might need this,
Subscribe to Tech Valor for more tips like this in the future and I'll see you
techies on the next one.

How to Generate Leads for Your Marketing Agency - Duration: 7:24.
So this video what I'm going to teach you guys how to do is literally how to
generate leads for your digital marketing agency okay there is so many
different ways that most people don't understand and simple things that you
can do number one what you're gonna need is literally is the old-school way of
doing it is what I usually suggest people is a pen and paper okay number
one a pen and paper and one of these notepads I have tons of these all over
my place all over my house because I've always writing notes and taking notes
and you know coming up with different ideas and things that I want to
implement things I want my team to do but these pen and paper okay
number one what you're gonna do is you're going to number one to a hundred
okay one to a hundred on the piece of paper on one side you'd probably to do
two lines of it one two hundred and then from there what you're gonna do is
you're gonna pick your name you're gonna figure out what your niche is whether
it's restaurants real estate agents mortgage brokers financial planners spas
James Palmer's air conditioning companies HVAC companies over here in
North America doesn't matter what it is you're going to create that okay pick a
niche then what you're going to do is you're going to eight get on Google or
be get on LinkedIn and you're gonna type in the niche okay and you're gonna see
and put in me and if it's Google put in the niche and your city and then you're
gonna go to page two and you're Google and you're gonna start typing writing
down every single name so you can write out the name the email and the phone
number of the company that's on there on the piece of paper because this is a law
of repetition I'm gonna Ingram the same Garrett the law of repetition that
you're going to do okay because now what you've done is you've built yourself a
leadless you can write down a hundred name the numbers of businesses in your
niche there's no where possible doesn't matter if you live in a small town I'm
gonna bust this myth around if you live in a small town in rural Canada or rural
Australia or rural United States you're going to find the bigger suburb next to
you and a couple more bigger suburbs next to that one and you're going to
continue typing that into Google and I guarantee you in about an hour you will
have a hundred commits kids up an hour to two hours today right now after
watching this video you're going to commit yourself and you're going to
build a list of a hundred businesses in your niche now there is your lead list
okay that is a limbless it's a beginning this is literally tried and true simple
steps of things that most you aren't willing to do because you're
an analysis paralysis you've read too many books you've watched too many damn
videos on YouTube make this the last video that you watch on YouTube and go
and do something get off your butt and get out there and do something because
if you are willing to start nobody can help you I can't help you no other
YouTube YouTube person on your nail appear if you can help me Tai Lopez can
help you yes you know you see if you've come and you've seen this video for me
being entitled business program you've seen that's something we teach there
what are you doing why are you not doing it okay because you don't know where to
get these that's reason why you watch this and I'm giving that to you that's
number one number two the old-school ways literally of a thing called yellow
pages okay I can guarantee you there's still places I still get them in my door
for some reason I don't understand why I get them because I use my computer for
anything on my phone for everything if you sell the Yellow Pages around
literally go to the business section and you pick the in again and then you'll
literally get start scrolling and you will find lists of businesses that are
there because those people that are the Yellow Pages are more than likely not
doing very much online and are missing out the amount of business that I closed
my first years of the agency just using the Yellow Pages alone and I'd send them
a lump email package with their I'd rip it out cuz I just go get a stack of them
and I'd rip it out and I'd send that with them and saying you're missing on
the online world because I've taped that and a printout a screenshot and send it
to them in in an envelope was insane the amount of business that I got just doing
that for my digital agency was wild you guys wouldn't even believe okay yes I

is consume the next video and consume the next piece of knowledge biggest at
the end of the day action is only thing that's going to solve this problem
I just taught you how to build a list of a hundred businesses again 100
businesses utilize what you need one of those businesses to close out of a
hundred you've got yourself a profitable digital agency for zero dollars and zero
investment all you had to do was Google in your niche and put that in
and you can do the exact same thing on LinkedIn and you could literally find a
hundred of them I suggest do because you can find their name their email at their
business you can even while you're doing that you
could take notes on what they could fix on their website so you already have a
reason to why you're calling them and then you just start cold calling them or
cold emailing them but do one cold outreach is the fastest most tried true
we do it today in our business to get new clients and I look forward to seeing
how literally all of this affects you guys in terms of starting your business

company the email the phone number and what they're missing and do that over
take a picture ok take a picture and send it to me on Instagram my links my
Instagram bio and infos in the bio below while watching this I'm watching and
once it's finished if it is finished ok and you can prove to me you've done a
hundred of these comment below you've done 100 take a picture send it to me on
Instagram my team and I will take a look at it and for what we'll do is we will
be picking one person a week to get a free call between now and I'm not sure
when we're gonna stop we're gonna solve this but this is January of 2019 so this
is a fresh video because we're doing a sprint to hold you guys accountable so I
need to I need to give you guys an incentive on why you need to do this and
I want to give this back to you so 0 ok let's say this is January 2019 this is
start fresh new brand new business for you zero you've got 100 leads because
I've showed you exactly how to do it today using a pen and paper in Google
calm and then you're gonna take a picture and send it to me I look forward
to seeing each and every single one of you sending me your pictures on
Instagram my team and I are gonna respond back and we're gonna pick one
person a week for as long as we need to till like it's a little overwhelming
probably and we're going to give one person a week a free 30-minute phone
call with me and what and I'm going to literally break down your business and
help you and figure out what you need to sell them how you need to sell them and
what you need to save them and I'm gonna give you all my tools and everything on
that call so you but what you have to do is number one you have to literally
start right now create that list of 100 take a picture send it to me like this
video and comment this video because we're gonna we're gonna cut my team on
we pick the winners we're gonna make sure that you guys have done
all three because we want to work with people that take action and actually
understand what it takes to get things going in follow direction so hopefully
you guys can enjoy these videos they're coming out pretty damn fast cuz I'm just

Liverpool news: Why Man City defeat is a GOOD thing - Reds legend - Duration: 3:52.
That's the view of Reds legend Mark Lawrenson, who saw his former side beaten by the reigning Premier League champions on Thursday night
Sergio Aguero's goal had been cancelled out by Roberto Firmino's header before Leroy Sane's strike earned the 2-1 win for City
**PREDICT FIVE RESULTS AND WIN £25,000 - FREE TO PLAY HERE** It was Liverpool's first defeat of the Premier League season, coming in their 21st game though they still sit four points clear at the top of the table
There had been talk that the Anfield outfit could go the season unbeaten, emulating the Arsenal side from 2003-04
Indeed, Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren even eluded that his side could remain unbeaten for the whole season recently
But having been beaten, Lawrenson believes the pressure to copy that feat is now off and could free Liverpool up
"When I heard Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren say before Christmas that they could emulate Arsenal's Invincibles side of 2003-04 and go the whole league season unbeaten, I groaned," Lawrenson wrote for BBC Sport "I was often in a similar position during my playing career, and you just never, ever, ever say that
"Experience tells you that, even if you go on to win the title, you always have one or two bad days where you get beaten and, as soon as Lovren said that, I thought it was asking for trouble
"In many ways, though, it is a good thing that Liverpool don't have to talk about staying 'invincible' any more
"I think it takes a bit of pressure off. "From my experience, the players and the manager hate being asked if they can go the whole season unbeaten
"I just wanted people to shut up about it, and it becomes a millstone around your neck
" Another former Red Graeme Souness believes Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp needs to question his players after the defeat at the Etihad
"It's now Jurgen Klopp's time to look at his players and see what reaction he gets," Souness said
"Pep Guardiola has seen what reaction he got from his players. "They'd lost three out of the last five and they've bounced back in the best and biggest possible way in beating their nearest rivals, in the manner in which they did
"So now it's Jurgen Klopp's turn to put that question to his players. "'Can we bounce back? What are you made of?'
"Everyone is a winner in the dressing room when we're winning. Everyone is a big character, a strong dressing room
"You only find out about your players when you lose two or three games back to back
"That question that has been put to Man City players has been answered in a positive way
Now it's Liverpool's turn."

Stop dog from Digging Holes. - Duration: 3:12.
why does your dog dig so each dog is an individual but most dogs share a few
common traits one of them is digging some dogs only dig in certain areas but
others will completely destroy your yard before you can attempt to stop your dog
from digging up the lawn you first need to understand why he does it many dogs
dig simply for entertainment you may already be familiar with the saying that
a bored dog is a destructive dog digging is a perfect example sometimes dogs will
dig for comfort or protection as well they may dig a hole in the ground then
curl up inside it for comfort or to escape the heat in some cases dogs dig
for attention or they may be chasing after some kind of prey digging is a
completely natural behavior for dog even so it can become a problem if your dog
exhibits it at the wrong time or in a way that you don't like the important
thing to remember is that you should not attempt to completely eradicate natural
behaviors like digging or chewing your best course of action should be to
redirect these kinds of unwanted behaviors toward a more appropriate
outlet here are five tips to help you to stop dogs yard digging supervise your
dog outdoors in many cases dogs dig out of boredom or as a means of seeking
attention so you may be able to curb this behavior simply by keeping an eye
on your dog while he is outdoors let him outside to do his business but don't let
him dally make sure your dog is properly exercised for many dogs digging is a
means of working up one of the best ways to discourage destructive behavior as a
whole is to make sure your dog's needs for exercise are met on a daily basis
provide shade for your dog some dogs dig holes in the yard as a means of escaping
the heat during the summer the dirt is cool so they dig a hole and curl up in
it to prevent your dog from digging for this reason just make sure your dog has
a comfortable shaded place to rest outside create a safe digging space for
many dogs digging is not just something they like to do it is something they
have an instinct for if your dog comes from a breed that was developed to flush
small game it may be an ingrained behavior try
setting aside a small area of your yard where digging is allowed and encourage
your dog to use it redirect digging behavior when you find
your dog digging somewhere in the yard where you don't want him to be clap your
hands or make a loud noise to startle him so he stops once you have your dog's
attention lead him to the safe digging space and encourage him to dig there
once he does praise and reward him it shouldn't be long before he learns where
he is and is not allowed to dig that's over this video please subscribe my

The List Of Celebrities We Lost In 2018 - Duration: 11:36.
We've already bid farewell to screen legends, music icons, and more in 2018.
Join us as we take a look at these artists' early works, reflect on their history-making
performances, and discuss the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Here are the stars we said goodbye to in 2018.
Stan Lee
Marvel Comics co-creator Stan Lee died November 12th, 2018 at age 95.
Born Stanley Martin Lieber, Lee was responsible for helping create iconic characters such
as Spider-Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Marvel's Thor, The Fantastic Four, Black Panther,
and many, many others.
For a whole generation of readers, he was the face of Marvel Comics...and maybe even
comic books as a whole.
"Aren't you…?"
"Oh, Stan Lee.
Hi."
The last three years of Lee's life were tumultuous, starting in August 2015, when Lee's former
assistant sued him for alleged "severe mental abuse."
Just under two years later, Lee's beloved wife of 69 years passed away, and the following
January, he was accused of sexually harassing the nursing staff at his home.
In 2018, Lee's daughter, J.C. Lee, made headlines when she was accused of elder abuse
against her father, though the comic book icon denied any such abuse.
J.C. spoke fondly about her father after his death, telling TMZ:
"My father loved all of his fans.
He was the greatest, most decent man."
Burt Reynolds
Actor Burt Reynolds died September 6th, 2018, from a reported heart attack.
The Hollywood icon was gearing up to film Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
shortly before his death.
Smokey and the Bandit made Reynolds a household name in 1977, and the actor went on to build
a career that was marked by both big hits and big misses, like turning down the role
of Han Solo in Star Wars.
Reynolds' personal life was particularly stormy.
His divorce from actress Loni Anderson was a 22-year process, and the actor was open
about never getting over his Smokey and the Bandit co-star and former girlfriend Sally
Field, who he called the love of his life.
Though Reynolds left us at age 82, his bravado - and his legendary mustache - will endure
on-screen forever.
Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin died August 16th, 2018 at 76 years old.
The Queen of Soul's family issued a statement acknowledging that she passed away from pancreatic
cancer, which she had previously denied battling in an interview with Jet magazine.
The severity of her then-undisclosed illness wasn't revealed until just a week before she
died.
Franklin was a musical legend, honored as Rolling Stone's greatest singer of all time.
She had 18 Grammys and 44 nominations, and was the first woman inducted into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame.
She was also a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement, with her songs "Think" and "Respect"
becoming unofficial anthems for equality.
Franklin even performed at Martin Luther King Jr.'s memorial service following his assassination.
Mac Miller
Rapper Mac Miller, born Malcolm McCormick, died from a reported overdose on September
7th, 2018 at just 26 years old.
Miller had been open about his struggles with substance abuse, which reportedly contributed
to the end of his relationship with pop star Ariana Grande in spring 2018.
In February 2016, Miller said in a mini-documentary for Fader:
"I'd rather be the corny white rapper than the drugged-out mess who can't even get out
of his house.
Overdosing is just not cool.
You don't go down in history because you overdose.
You just die."
Miller's family released a statement after his death, saying:
"He was a bright light in this world for his family, friends and fans.
Thank you for your prayers."
Stephen Hawking
World-famous theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking died March 14th, 2018.
According to the BBC, Hawking - who'd been diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease,
when he was just 21 years old - died peacefully in his home in Cambridge.
He lived to be 76 years old, despite being given just two years to live at the time of
his diagnosis.
"But it's been a great struggle, which I have got through only with a lot of help
from my family, colleagues, and friends."
Hawking is survived by his children: Lucy, Tim, and Robert, who said in a statement:
"We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today [...] His courage and persistence
with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world.
He once said, 'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.'
We will miss you forever."
Dolores O'Riordan
Dolores O'Riordan, the legendary frontwoman of The Cranberries, died on January 15th,
2018 at age 46.
A U.K. coroner told The Associated Press that O'Riordan was found dead in her London hotel
room, but that no foul play was suspected in her passing.
O'Riordan's boyfriend of two years, musician Olé Koretsky, wrote in a statement:
"My friend, partner, and the love of my life is gone.
My heart is broken and it is beyond repair.
Dolores is beautiful […] The energy she continues to radiate is undeniable.
I am lost.
I miss her so much."
Anthony Bourdain
Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, best known for his Emmy-winning TV series Parts Unknown,
was found dead after apparently taking his own life on June 8th, 2018.
He was 61 years old.
CNN issued a statement on Bourdain's sudden death, saying:
"It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague … His
love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories
of the world made him a unique storyteller.
His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much."
Bourdain built a name for himself as an outspoken chef with a reformed bad-boy reputation.
Though he'd admitted to substance abuse problems in the past, the famous chef had
reportedly overcome those challenges to become a highly successful food and travel connoisseur
and renowned journalist.
"Just when you think 'I've had enough of this," something really interesting happens.
And interesting things happen to me all the time."
When Parts Unknown received a Peabody Award in 2013, the organization remarked of Bourdain:
"He's irreverent, honest, curious, never condescending, never obsequious […] People open up to him
and, in doing so, often reveal more about their hometowns or homelands than a traditional
reporter could hope to document."
Richard 'Old Man' Harrison
Pawn Stars patriarch Richard "Old Man" Harrison passed away on June 25th, 2018, reportedly
from complications related to Parkinson's disease.
Richard, a Navy veteran who often spoke of his service on the show, became a fan favorite
on the History Channel hit series, which debuted in 2009, though his appearances in recent
years have been few and far between.
Richard opened the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas with his son Rick after moving
to Sin City in the 1980s.
Rick said in a statement:
"He was my hero and I was fortunate to get a very cool 'Old Man' as my dad.
That I got to share him with so many others and they got to see what a great family man
he was is something I am grateful to have experienced with him."
Kate Spade
On June 5th, 2018, it was reported that fashion designer Kate Spade had tragically taken her
own life at 55 years old.
Born Katherine Noel Brosnahan, the famous handbag designer is survived by husband Andy
Spade - brother of comedian and actor David Spade - and their 13-year-old daughter, Frances
Beatrix Spade.
According to TMZ, law enforcement sources said Kate left a note for Frances that read,
in part, "This is not your fault."
The Spade family asked for privacy in a statement, saying:
"We are all devastated.
We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly."
Mandy Blank
Fitness legend Mandy Blank died in her Los Angeles home on October 29th, 2018 at 42 years
old.
Per TMZ, the 1999 International Federation of Bodybuilding World Champion, was discovered
in the bathtub by a housekeeper and pronounced dead on the scene.
Reportedly no foul play was suspected in Blank's death, and no drugs or alcohol were found
at the scene, but an autopsy performed on November 1st proved inconclusive, according
to a statement by the Los Angeles County Coroner.
Fitness icon and nutrition coach, Annette Milbers, said of Blank's sudden passing,
"I'm absolutely shocked [...] She always made other people feel great."
"...I'm not just some DVD sitting on the counter.
You are going to get a full transformation - mind, body, soul, spirit."
Devin Lima
LFO singer Devin Lima passed away on November 21st, 2018 at just 41 years old.
Lima was one-third of the boy band famous for hits such as "Summer Girls" and "Girl
On TV."
In October 2017, Lima underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his adrenal gland that
was reportedly the size of a football.
According to bandmate Brad Fischetti, Lima also had to have his spleen and left kidney
removed during the surgery because the organs were "engulfed" by the tumor.
When the tumor was initially detected, Lima felt positive about his prognosis, saying
in a video to fans:
"It's great to be holistic and have positive vibes.
You can cure a lot, I've cured a lot with just my mind."
Later in October 2017, Fischetti announced that Lima had been diagnosed with stage 4
adrenal cancer.
On November 21st, 2018, he announced his band-mate's death in an emotional YouTube video:
"To me he was a brother, to his six kids he was a father, to their mother - a wonderful
partner."
Sadly, Lima is the second member of LFO to suffer an untimely death from cancer.
Frontman Rich Cronin passed away at age 36 in 2010 after battling leukemia.
Dennis Edwards
Temptations singer Dennis Edwards passed away at age 74 on February 1st, 2018.
Edwards replaced original lead singer, David Ruffin, in 1968, bringing his gospel style
to the lead vocals on some of the group's most memorable later-career hits, including
"Just My Imagination," "Cloud Nine," "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," and "I Can't Get Next
to You."
He split from the group in 1977, but rejoined a decade later - and in 1989, he was inducted
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Temptations.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Edwards died from complications from meningitis.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda, as well as a daughter from his previous marriage to
Ruth Pointer of The Pointer Sisters.
Avicii
Swedish DJ and producer Avicii died April 20th, 2018 at just 28 years old.
The EDM superstar, born Tim Bergling, was most famous for his hits "Levels," "Hey
Brother" and "Wake Me Up," featuring Aloe Blacc.
Bergling suffered from some serious medical issues in the final years of his all-too-short
life, including acute pancreatitis, which he attributed to excessive drinking.
Though he reportedly quit drinking entirely, his health issues continued, leading to the
DJ having both his appendix and gallbladder removed in 2014.
By 2016, Avicii had retired from touring completely, telling The Hollywood Reporter:
"It was something I had to do for my health.
The scene was not for me […] I'm more of an introverted person in general.
It was always very hard for me.
I took on board too much negative energy."
TMZ reported that the DJ was found dead at a resort in in Muscat, Oman.
The circumstances surrounding his passing remain unclear.

[Leila Wai Shimokawa] Please be seated.
Thank you to Puʻu for composing and leading us in Mele Honouliuli, an oli highlighting our beloved land from
the glorious mountain of Palehua to Kapapaapuhi, the pond that resides by the sea. Special
guests, members of the graduating class, parents, family, and friends, welcome to the Fall 2018
Fall Commencement at the University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu. And I appreciate you guys
for bearing with us with this weather. Consider it blessings. My name is Leila Wai Shimokawa
and I'll be your co-emcee for today's festivities. This is a special occasion, so
please silence your cell phones. And now, may I please welcome to the podium, our Chancellor, Maenette Benham.
Mahalo Leila.
Welina mai e nā haumāna, nā kumu, nā hoaloha, a me nā ʻohana! Eia kākou ma ka papahana puka kau hāʻule
lau no ka makahiki ʻelua kaukani ʻumikūmāwalu. Welcome students, faculty and staff, friends
and family to our Fall 2018 University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu graduation ceremony.
Mahalo to each of you for coming to celebrate this remarkable accomplishment of our graduates
on this absolutely blustery beautiful day with a hug rainbow right behind us.
We received a congratulatory message to our graduates from Senator Mazie Hirono of which I will
read to you now. Aloha and congratulations to the University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu
class of 2018. I join your family and friends in recognizing the graduates for reaching
this significant milestone. Today's commencement ceremony is the culmination of years of classwork,
extracurricular activities and other experiences that helped to shape you. When I was an undergraduate
at the University of Hawaiʻi, volunteer and advocacy opened my eyes to our responsibility
to advocate for underserved communities and the importance of everyone's voice being heard
by our government. These lessons were the first steps on my path to serve in elected
office. While today's commencement ceremony marks the completion of your degree, I hope
that your graduation is only one milestone in a lifetime of learning. The education you
received at the University of Hawaiʻi will serve as a strong foundation as you continue
to grow and gain experience and knowledge. I urge each of you to find and pursue your
passion as it relates to your professional career and I would encourage you to make a
difference in your own communities. Mahalo to the administrators, faculty and staff of
the University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu for your dedication in helping
these students succeed. Congratulations to today's graduates, I look forward to hearing
about the accomplishments of the Class of 2018. Sincerely, Mazie K Hirono, United States Senator.

to the podium.
Thank you Leila,
President Lassner, Chancellor Benham,
faculty, staff, graduates, families and friends, I'm honored to be a part of
today's momentous occasion. It's truly a joyous time and I thank you for inviting
me to make comments on behalf of the board of regents. I congratulate all of you. More
than 200 of you sitting on the platform here, and others that are not here today. Each of
you has a different story to share. Some have navigated unconventional routes, to be the
first in your family to get a college degree. Many have juggled full schedules, balancing
school, work, and family. Others embraced their college experience, filling their plates
with a slate of extracurricular activities. Many took advantage of UH West Oʻahu's
online offerings to complete your degree requirements. All will soon share one common trait, you
will all be proud graduates of the University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu. We honor you
as we celebrate your perseverance and commitment to achieving your goals. On behalf of the
board of regents, I extend to all of you our congratulations and warm wishes for the future
and a special thanks to all of those who made it possible for you to obtain a baccalaureate
degree. Mahalo.
[Audience applause]
Mahalo Regent Moore, that was very inspirational.
And now, I'd like to call upon UH System President and UH Mānoa Interim Chancellor
David Lassner, to give the greetings from the University of Hawaiʻi System.
Aloha kakahiaka, good morning, and welcome to a fabulous Kapolei day. The rain has cleared
the wind is keeping us cool, it really couldn't be better. To our distinguished guests, thank
you for your support of UH West Oʻahu. This is a campus that's truly embedded in the
community and your support means everything to us. To the faculty who have made this possible,
it's an amazing day I know for all of us who work in a University. This is truly, well
for UH West Oʻahu, one of the two best days of the year. There's another good one coming
up in the Spring, when we all get to see the fruits of the labor and understand why all
that we do is so worth while. And most of all to the students, this is a special day
for you I know, and on behalf of the UH System I want to welcome you also, not just to the
family of UH West Oʻahu graduates, but to the family of University of Hawaiʻi graduates.
We're a system of 10 campuses across the state. Just, as a show of hands, how many
of you have attended classes at a community college or other UH campus? And you can see
the role that all of our campuses play in educating the people of Hawaiʻi, and how
many of think you might go onto graduate school perhaps at another campus? So you can see
we stay in the family once we start. So let me just ask one thing of you today, I ask
a lot of you for the rest of your lives, but for today only, the people who are gathered
here today, these are the people who made it possible for you to be here today and they're
celebrating with you, your parents, your aunties, your uncles, your grandparents, for some of
you your children, who have really helped you succeed so how about if you give a round
of applause for all of them.
[Audience applause]
[President David Lassner] Mahalo to you all and thank you for joining us on this wonderful
wonderful day.
[Audience applause]
Mahalo President Lassner and thank you
reminding us the importance of believing that we are truly one big ʻohana. Now I would like
to invite Chancellor Benham back to the podium to introduce our keynote speaker, Principal
Keith Hayashi.
I am honored to introduce our Fall 2018 Graduation
Speaker, Principal Keith Hayashi, who has served as principal at Waipahu High School
since 2009. He is responsible for the implementation of the school's academic and financial plans,
and meeting the educational, social, and emotional needs of nearly 2,700 students. Principal
Hayashi served as Interim Deputy Superintendent in 2017 and is a former Complex Area Superintendent
for the Pearl City–Waipahu Complex Area. In 2013, he was recognized with the Masayuki
Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Award. And, in 2014, he was named Hawaiʻi's High
School Principal of the Year. A graduate, go bulldogs, of Kaimuki High School he earned
a bachelor and two masters of education degrees, in educational administration and in curriculum
and instruction from the University of Hawaiʻi
at Mānoa. He is a good friend, a community leader and supporter of University of Hawaiʻi.
Representative Ty Cullen shared that, "Principal Hayashi is able to partner with leaders in
the community and State that benefit the students of Waipahu High School, in ways that go well
beyond the classroom." Indeed, Principal Hayashi helped to establish the Department
of Education's Early College program which allows students to earn college credit through
University of Hawaiʻi campuses while simultaneously working towards their high school diplomas.
I asked a UH West Oʻahu student and Chancellor's Scholarship recipient, Leeann Aira Villanueva,
A graduate of Waipahu High School Class of 2018, Valedictorian and Early College Olympian,
and recently I understand she spoke at Governor Ige's inaugural celebration dinner. I asked
her to share her thoughts about you Principal Hayasi, and she said: Principal Hayashi truly
is a great leader. He is one of the reasons why Waipahu High School is thriving, and,
just like me, students have many successful experiences. He continuously ensures Great
opportunities -- especially with his strong support for the Early College Program. It
has become a platform for me and other students to achieve higher education. The opportunities,
skills, knowledge, and success I obtained would have not been possible without his strong
dedication to student learning. I am forever grateful for all the things he does for students
like myself. Principal Keith Hayashi, you are a person for whom your students, faculty,
staff and community partners gather strength and courage. Your generosity and care has
touched the minds and spirits of your students, many of them sitting up here, leaving them
with indelible memories, indicative of the lifelong influence that a teacher can have.
It is truly a privilege and honor to invite, a leader of learners, to share his
thoughts with us today, Principal Keith Hayashi.
[Audience applause]
Thank you Chancellor Benham. Aloha and good morning.
President Lassner, Regent Moore, Chancellor Benham, faculty, staff, special guests, family
and friends, and students of the Fall graduating class of 2018! I am truly honored to have
been asked to address this graduating class and I hope my message will help us celebrate
this momentous occasion. Many of us think of graduation day, or commencement , as a
day that marks the end of our studies at UH West Oʻahu. While it is true that this day
is the culmination of many years of studying, personal sacrifice and perseverance, commencement
also means "to begin" or "start." How then, shall we begin?
Let's begin by committing to using all of what you've learned to strengthening and making
a positive difference in the lives of others in our communities.
Graduates, please close your eyes and think back to that very first day that you attended
the University of Hawaiʻi at West Oʻahu. Who were you? What did you know? What did you
believe in? Now fast forward to today. Open your eyes. How have you grown? I'm confident
that you have. We owe a great amount of gratitude to all
of your instructors, whose commitment can be found in their patience and dedication
to your learning and intellectual growth. Indeed, it is their commitment to this UH
West Oʻahu community, to you, that brings them here this morning, to celebrate your achievements
and your graduation, your "commencement". I encourage you to begin the path to service,
by applauding them for their tireless support and heartfelt encouragement. Can we please
give them a hand.
[Audience applause]
As mentioned earlier, it was also those family members and friends
that are here today, and your fellow graduates, that supported you, in giving to you, in your
journey. Whether you are graduating with a degree in
Applied Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Humanities, Public Administration,
or Social Sciences, we as educators will have failed if you "commence" your associated
profession in the absence of a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others,
and our communities. The pursuit of secondary and post-secondary
education involves more than academic credentialing, skill development and knowledge. While it
is true that these abilities may help us find a job and establish our livelihood, let
us ask a more fundamental question of, "How can your discipline help to improve the lives
of others in our communities?" In fact, the fundamental question that we
were asked as children, "What do you want to be when you grow up." Do you remember
that? Has since evolved to "What kinds of problems do you want to solve?", as the
latter focuses on our sense of purpose, or giving back.
For me, I wanted to help children, so I began my career as a first grade teacher. And let
me tell you, I learned a lot about myself working with a classroom full of 5 and 6 year
olds; the importance of patience, of listening, empathy, and building a sense of community
in our classroom were all important attributes that I worked to get better at. Next, I moved
on to 6th grade and, those same attributes patience, of being a good listener, empathy,
and community building were still just as important for those older students. Later,
I accepted a literacy position as a district resource teacher, and it was there that I
was fortunate to meet dedicated teachers and administrators in the Leeward District. I
worked with schools from Pearl City to Waianae, and was inspired by those school leaders who
were determined to make a difference, not only for their schools and their students,
but their entire communities. They were good listeners, they're empathetic, and they
valued people. They inspired me to pursue school administration, to strive to make a
difference on a larger scale. I've been fortunate to serve as a school administrator
at Waipahu Intermediate, Waipahu Elementary, as an Area Superintendent, and currently as
principal of Waipahu High School. And although the collective experiences have helped me
to grow professionally and personally, that first grade class help to lay the foundation
for me: in patience, listening, being empathetic and the importance of building positive relationships.
We must remember our beginnings and those who
helped us throughout our journey, and to continually refocus on our purpose. Never lose sight of
purpose. Now as a public school principal responsible
for ensuring that our students are educated by well-prepared teachers, those who embrace
our common values and are knowledgeable about our local communities, I'm excited that
there are wonderful partnerships established with UH West Oʻahu together with our high schools
on the west side. For example, innovative programs like Early College 2.0 is growing.
Through the support of Chancellor Benham, high school students are able to participate
in a vertically articulated curriculum in creative media where students leverage their
Early College credits, and gain direct entry into UH West Oʻahu's prestigious creative
media program as college juniors upon graduating from high school. It's these kinds of programs
that support our evolving workforce, capable of addressing the demands of our 21st century
economy. As a graduate of the University of Hawaiʻi
- West Oʻahu, you are all truly special, and you have been prepared to make a difference. Take
what you've learned here, your skills and knowledge together with your experiences in
life, and with this "commencement", dedicate yourselves to making a positive difference
in supporting those in your communities. Reach out and make the changes that you're inspired
to do. Persevere! As Mahatma Ghandi shared, "The best way to find yourself, is to lose
yourself in the service of others." Congratulations and best wishes for a bright and rewarding future. Thank you.
[Audience applause]
Mahalo Principal Hayashi. I personally have
seen what your program has done at Waipahu High School so congratulations, thank you.
Now Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Jeffrey Moniz, will recognize the candidates
for graduation with distinction and honor.
The University is proud of those students
who are graduating with distinction. Based on a 4-point scale, these candidates have
earned a minimum grade point average of 3.75 and have completed at least 30 credits at
UH West Oʻahu. You will find the names of these outstanding students marked with an
asterisk in your program. Will all those graduating with distinction and wearing a red cord rise
or raise your hand?
[Audience applause]
Please remain standing or your hand up
if your able. In addition, the graduating class includes several members who were selected
for national honor societies such as Alpha Phi Sigma, Alpha Kappa Delta, Lambda Alpha,
Psi Chi, Sigma Tau Delta, Golden Key International Honour Society, and Kappa Delta Pi. To symbolize
this achievement these students are adorned with cords of various colors, pins or medallions.
Will those students please rise or raise your hand?
Please keep standing or keep your hand raised too. We would now like to recognize the student
marshals. These students' academic achievements have resulted in their selection to assist their fellow
candidates during the commencement ceremony.
Will the student marshals wearing
a red and white cord symbolizing their service to UH West Oʻahu please rise or raise your hand?
We would like to call upon those students who have augmented their studies by participating
in Service Learning, those with the Service Learning Red Stole, please rise or raise your hand
Iʻm excited to announce that we have 13 distance education students for graduation
who flew in from Hawaiʻi Island, Kauaʻi, Lanai, Maui and Molokaʻi to be a part of
todayʻs celebration! Please rise or raise your hand!
Stay up or keep them up we're almost done. Next, We would like to recognize those students
who served in various capacities on our Chartered Student Organizations, including the
Associated Students of UH West Oʻahu, Campus Center Board, Student Media Board, and Student Activity
Board. Thank you for fostering our thriving student life. Please rise or raise your hand.
Finally, Last, but certainly not least, we would like to recognize our student veterans
and thank them for their service. For those veterans, including those in the audience,
please rise or raise your hand.
Audience, please join me in one more round of applause
for all of these distinguished individuals and their accomplishments.
Thank you all.
You may be seated.
[Pearlena Stone] Thank you Dr. Moniz. Wasn't that chicken skin? And now Vice Chancellor for Student
Affairs, Dr. Judy Oliveira, will introduce my friend, who's also the student speaker.
Aloha, I am honored to introduce our student speaker, Shawna-Leigh Camara who until this
moment kept it as a surprise for her family. So congratulations to her family that I believe
is sitting right there, so if we could clap for them too. Shawna-Leigh is graduating with
a degree in Social Science, with a concentration in Psychology. She says that "UH West Oʻahu
has some of the most caring, knowledgeable, and respectable people in the world. Not only
are you treated as if you matter, but you are also treated like you belong. As a student,
I was able to develop inside and outside of the classroom because of the people at UH
West Oʻahu." The Waialua High School graduate served as a Mentor and Program Member for
PUEO Leadership, Event Coordinator for Student Activity Fee Board, ASUH West Oʻahu Senator,
and a NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program Fellow. In addition to all of these activities,
five months ago she welcomed daughter Amelia. Please welcome Shawna-Leigh!
Thank you Judy. Good morning, Chancellor Benham, Vice Chancellors, Distinguished Guests, Family,
and Friends, thank you for being here today to help us celebrate the Fall 2018 graduating
class. My name is Shawna-Leigh Camara and I am honored to be this semester's student
speaker. When I first began my journey here at the
University of Hawaiʻi at West Oʻahu in 2014, I believed that college was the only option
I had to better my future. I imagined what a degree from an institution would provide
me and how it would make me successful. Being a first-generation student and one of the
first in my family to receive a college degree, I'd have every single bragging right. I'd
suddenly become the favorite child. The smartest one too. It would be all about me and all
about my successes. No one and I mean no one would be able to take that away from me.
Little did I know, four years later as I reflect on my journey leading up to this very moment,
my reasons for attending college and life itself have changed. I traded in my self-centered
and egotistic beliefs for something—or more importantly, someone. Someone who has blessed
me in so many unanticipated ways. Just five months ago I became a mother to a sweet little
girl named Amelia and I have learned that being a mother is much like being a student.
Why? Because there is always room for growth and chances to learn. Here at UH West Oʻahu, I have
attended classes with Amelia, even nursing her through a number of Anthropology classes
with Dr. Mello. I have brought her along with me when participating in campus events like
Splash Bash, Family Movie Night, and E Ola Pono. Last month, I had the special opportunity
to bring her to a national conference in California where she sat with me through presentations
and workshops. Having Amelia with me while being a student
has opened my eyes to understanding the purpose for attending UH West Oʻahu. My education
is no longer just about me and my bragging rights once I graduate; I see the last four
years as a step toward improving the lives of those, like Amelia, who will come after
me. As I look around today, I see our Kūpuna—our elders—and our ʻohana—families—with
pride in their eyes and joy in their hearts as they eagerly wait for the moment when we
get our diplomas and head out to be embraced by the warmth of their love. I also see children,
some running and playing and others sitting bored out of their minds not realizing that
one day they'd be sitting in special seats like these, waiting to receive their degrees
as well. But most importantly, I really see...and realize now, four years later, that attending
college is not just for the betterment of my future but for the betterment of our people.
We will pave pathways on which our children will have opportunities to learn, grow, and
continue to empower generations who will come after them.
To my fellow graduates, consider all the hard work and sacrifices we, our friends, and our
family have put into these past years that allow us to be graduating today. Know that
our education has a purpose beyond the recognition and successes we may personally receive. We
have the knowledge to improve the future of our school, communities, and homes here in
Hawaiʻi. More importantly, we can be of service to the future generations, like Amelia, who
follow in our footsteps. Enjoy this moment...but tomorrow, begin a journey that will better
life for ourselves, our friends and families, and our communities.
Congratulations Class of 2018! Thank you.
[Leila Wai Shimokawa] I think Amelia was in our most recent UH West Oʻahu commercial? Weren't you pregnant
with her? Shawna-Leigh was very very patient and walking back and forth. Thank you Shawna-Leigh.
Now, UH West Oʻahu Faculty Senate Chair, Thomas Hirsbrunner, will give the final salutation
to the graduates on behalf of the faculty.
Thank you Leila. Good morning and Aloha. It is a real honor to stand before this beautiful
gathering of our community to wish our graduates congratulations on behalf of the faculty of
UH West Oʻahu. 23 years ago when I graduated with my bachelor's degree, I could never
imagine that I would be standing here today addressing you all. My goal at that time was
to find a law school that would accept me, get in, get out, and then go on to be an attorney
to right all the wrongs in the world. And I did that, rather I did a scaled down version
of that. I did not right all the wrongs in the world, but I did right a few and those
accomplishments were meaningful and transformative for both my clients and me. Coming to UH West
Oʻahu, working with students with disabilities, teaching law, being chair of the Faculty Senate,
making a commencement speech, was never really part of the plan, or at least not in the beginning.
So why am I standing here talking about me? When this day is about you, the graduates.
It's because I want you to think beyond your initial goals. Be ready to reach higher
when your opportunity comes and do not ever doubt yourself or your ability to achieve
something greater than you initially thought possible. As a student of law and government
and politics, I've heard many speeches. Some inspiring, some not so much. But one
has stuck with me because I found part of it so inspiring. And I won't share who gave
it or when, because politics is so divisive today. But from that speech I want to quote
a short poem that was resided about vision, courage, reaching high, and taking risks.
"I'm tired of sailing my little boat far inside the harbor bar. I want to go out where
the big ships float, out on the deep where the great ones are. And should my frail craft
prove too slight, for the waves that sweep those billows orb, I'd rather go down in
the stirring fight, then drowse to death at the sheltered shore." Graduates, it's
your time to set a course for the deep water, where the big ships are. You may not get there
right away, but stay the course. When you see an opportunity of the horizon, take it.
Change course if you need to. If someone is blocking you, telling you to stay in your
lane, get in the passing lane and go around them. Somehow find a way through. By earning
this degree, you have proven that you have what it takes to achieve great things. You
have connected the dots, navigated through admissions, advising, registration, financial
aid, Laulima, and math class. And here we are at your commencement. As Principal Hayashi
said, the word commencement does not mean an ending, but rather a beginning. And I feel
like I can speak on behalf of everyone here when I say we cannot wait to see where your
journey will lead. So today enjoy your time with your family and friends, celebrate your
achievement, and on Monday it's back to work. Again, on behalf of the UH West Oʻahu
Faculty, the world class UH West Oʻahu Faculty, I say congratulations and Aloha.
[Leila Wai Shimokawa] Thank you, Chair Hirsbrunner. We will now proceed with the awarding of academic degrees

Un Tour de Nuestro Apartamento en Tokio, Japón - Duration: 11:52.
good good afternoon today we are going to give a tour of our apartment
We have been living in Japan for a month this place so if we're already comfortable
here we have unpacked and we wanted them show how is the inside of a
Japanese apartment so let's go to start with our tour now then
just behind samuel here we have the entrance door to the apartment and just
as soon as you enter we have this hallway and this is where you take off your shoes
because you can not enter with shoes a Japanese apartment that's very bad
we also have umbrellas because star since there were three for something like that because
one day we came out with only one and we started to rain we had to buy another
we have like a curtain here just behind me I'm not sure why he's
here if it's decoration or what it is but it's there it's nice
so if we go to the first room I want to mention that this
Japanese apartment is quite big because when we were looking for a
place to rent a lot alone was anna mono studio so you only have one
room with your bedroom the kitchen the room and they looked over borrowed well
that fortunately we could find a apartment with four rooms with
four spaces so we've been quite comfortable here so let's go
starting with the first room that we have here that would be the
bedroom here we have two beds Individuals that are side by side
we also have a bedside table with one lamp we have air conditioning
a terrible heat there is also like a small desk and lemuel has been
working here I have seen
this apartment has two types of windows we have this window of
glass here and we also have this window that is a bit more traditional
also painting wood like with paper
yes and something half weird is that here in the bedroom we also have a kind of
kitchen but it's not a full kitchen so I'm going to show you if we open
this curtain we have our frigidity with the freezer
and there's not much inside frigid we have coming little water we have
bought fruits and vegetables from Chile useless Chilean wine we also have a
microwave oven and this is like an oven-type toaster
for sandwiches and heat things by the style but the truth is that we have not
been using this we just went out to eat to restaurants or go to the supermarket
which is just opposite and one can buying food remains is made and is
pretty cheap so it's easier behind this curtain we have the
second part of the kitchen where we can wash our dishes but that's it
and there's no burner so that means that we can not
if we have a teapot in the next room but that's all when it
it's about cooking so that concludes the tour of the first room
bedroom here we also have a curtain like to create a bit of
division with the next environment and this environment would be our room
we have here an armchair or a sofa and a little table we also have how are you
small chairs if we have friends who come to visit we have a picture
from a geisha in Japanese a clock to medium old and also this I do not know how
it's called press to change your clothes and it also helps to create a bit of
space between the bedroom and the living room and here we have a cabinet with plates cups
certain things like that much fruit that we have bought and this is the food
for our breakfast so we have green coffee instant coffee very well and
well as I had mentioned before in the Japanese houses you have to take out the
shoes as soon as one enters but you you can put these flip flops to walk
for the house but as we have medium feet 10 North American
we do not enter these flip flops are not very comfortable so we walk barefoot
for the house but it does not bother me so if this is the second environment
of the department and now we're going to continue to the third we go forward
samuel ok then another thing that I like about
this Japanese apartment is that we have these things and they are doors or walls that
they slide so I'm going to show you how does it work
closing a 123
so now we have one more space private in this third space and this
would come to be like our dining room as well that we have tatami floors that are made
from a straw the rice straw is used for the floors here we have a table
short and you're pillows where we we can sit and here we eat our
meals we examine what we use dinner and this space can also be converted
in bedroom if you have four people staying here they have left us like
Some max are some mattresses but a little more finite so we can take the
table and put those mattresses and if we have space for two people and also what
What I like here is that we have a little of art on the walls we have the
sakura yes that are the flowers of the tree cherry
so if it's a nice space here it's where we have the recyclables and the
waste you have to separate all plastics glass everything so we have air
conditioned
more art and here we have here are saved more pillows plus bedspreads like that
that if this is the third space and now I show you the fourth space here in
our Japanese apartment this would come to be like an office and I've been
working on this as it has this time and is super small in the bedroom and I
I work here so if we have here electronic solos for cameras and
all of that we also have the closet behind this curtain
and here are the mattresses that I was mentioning if they have friends that
they come to stay in the department more pillows here also more mattresses
and if we have our clothes here suitcases shoes all that and samuel taken out
of hitting the head
these clues that want to see our Street
there they have it
in this room we also have two chairs and just behind there is a table
metal that we can open but was occupying too much space and not the
we were using because there is another table in that in the third room so the
we save just and if we have another city up here we have more bedspreads
pillows blankets all like that and something that one has to be careful if
one is a little bit of everything I'm not so tall but the doors in japan are
quite low so samuel almost every day at
beginning when we were in this apartment he was walking and he
hit
landa with a little fear and here we also have
these wooden doors that one can slide to create more space between
a division between the two spaces there three doors here and up here we have
a few plants a clock a wood half worked as ornaments and that
concludes the tour of this fourth environment so now let's continue let's go to
leave through the same corridor where we started the video we have these
curtains and we're going to show you our bathroom now this is not a bathroom very
modern I've seen it japanese baths super modern is a little older
but they will see how it is ok then in how much one enters we have this piece of furniture and
here we keep the hair dryer we have more towels and all that and here
is the shower the shower has three little buttons this is to learn water
hot this second is like an extractor I do not know
if you can hear it and we also have a light inside the shower and it's a
shower a little compact is not a space super big but it works so not
we can complain a lot and now we enter here you can see the rest of the
bathroom we have a toilet the toilet
this fascinates him samuel so the bathrooms Japanese then you can have as a
lavatory where you can save the hands and the water you use to wash
hands also fills the water tank so there is not much water expenditure and
here we have another lavatory so in You can actually choose which
you want to use we have a mirror
and this concludes the tour of our Japanese apartment I hope you have
enjoyed now have a better idea of what you can find here in Tokyo
in japan this apartment is quite large there are many apartments in the
city that are only studio but we are renting in shinjuku
and in the outskirts of shinjuku we are like 15 minutes from a station
subway train so if the prices are a little lower here and also those
spaces are a little wider so yes that concludes the tour today and we're going
to continue showing our apartments while we travel the
japan thank you for watching this video and we we see the next
ah
