Messerbau Folge 42 - Freihand Anschliff - Duration: 16:29.

Welcome to the 42nd episode of my knife making channel.

In the last episodes, you've seen how I made some blanks according to my new design

from episode 36.

In this episode I practice the polish freehand, i.e. without grinding device.

First, I scribe the lines on the blade that you need for the grinding.

Here are some useful tools, with that the scribing works best with.

Let's start with the marking on the side surfaces.

I made a stencil out of G10.

Then I only need to transfer the plunge line with a marking pin, symmetrically on both sides.

Now I'm going to take an old caliper around to extend this line along its entire length.

This line runs exactly parallel to the later cutting bevel.

Here I usually scratch the marking color on the back of the blade

and cut it off unintentionally so that I must renew it.

I've made a tool that is right in the middle of my line.

My steel is 4.2 mm thick.

The tip lies exactly on 2.1 mm and is glued with epoxy resin on a thin aluminium sheet.

I put the blade on a polished granite plate and I'm scoring the midline.

So that the line really represents the middle, I turn the blade to the other side

and repeat the whole thing.

Before I start with the grinding, I'll give you one more trick on how to use your abrasive belts

so that they can be used long lasting.

With my microscope I enlarged a zircon corundum band with grain 40 on the left.

You see a lot of little grinding particles in various directions.

In the middle is a ceramic ribbon with grain 80.

The grinding particles are not so easy to see, but even here, there are rugged uprisings,

which cut into the steel during grinding and wear it down.

On the far right, you can see a tape that's already well worn.

There are hardly any pointed grinding particles sticking out.

The surface looks like levelled.

When grinding, the belt runs from top to bottom.

Here I have shown schematically how the steel is brought to the grinding belt.

If you put it on the abrasive belt at right angles then the grinding particles are hit

with full force on a sharp edge and are shaved off.

That's not how you should do it when the abrasive belt is supposed to last a long time.

The grinding particles hit an angled edge,

they cut into the material and do not break off.

Try it on a rough tape, there looks the difference most clearly.

If you place the workpiece at a right angle,

the grinding particles even fly noticeably into your face.

That is why my first step is breaking the edges.

I always use an old grinding belt for this,

because not much material has to be removed.

The workpiece hits at a harmless angle of 45 degrees on the abrasive belt.

This way, I'll break the hard edge of the blade.

I've shown this schematically here.

On the left the sanding belt, which runs from top to bottom.

From the right the blade comes closer.

The edge is removed up to the centre line.

After that I do the same for the other side,

by turning the blade 180 degrees.

Now comes the grinding.

Now the abrasive belt does not meet any hard edge,

but always on a broken edge.

The grinding particles cut into the steel without being torn down.

When the first side of the bevel is finished I turn the blade 180 degrees again

and make the cut on the other side.

Then the grinding is finished.

The abrasive belt is worn out but not so strong,

like I havn't broken the edges before.

So here's the first step again, the breaking of the edge on the left side of the blade.

I'm trying to get as close as I can to the center line, but to maintain a steady

but a tiny distance from it, 0.25 mm are optimal.

Now it's the right side.

Also here I only break the edge for now at an angle of 45 degrees.

Slowly I work my way up to the center line.

What you don't see here is that I immerse the blade in water to cool it every time.

That should do it so far.

The angle does not have to be the same on both sides

because it will have finally disappeared after the following grinding.

First, I make a hit on the blade.

This tool is not necessary, but it helps me, so that I am

safe from accidentally removing much of the blade mirror.

Two parallel strips of hardened steel are pushed over the blade and is positioned,

that the blade mirror is obscured.

Now I change the old abrasive belt through a new one.

I'll take a zircon corundum with grain 80, because this one's better bent.

The ceramic tape is not flexible enough for this, that I can do a rounded ricasso with it.

But unfortunately the blue belt doesn't last that long like a ceramic belt.

Here we go with the grinding.

Since I'm not so skilled at it yet, I do it at a slow belt speed.

It took me almost an hour.

Here again the schematic drawing, the the grinding from the side.

At the top I have to work my way up to the center line

and at the bottom to the line torn on the side.

The approach to these lines I steer just by holding the blade against the tape

and press either further up or further down against the blade with my thumb.

After each process I check the result,

to change the angle a little bit during the next operation.

But first and foremost, it's a matter of removal of material, on a large scale.

In the future, I'll be raising the belt speed at this point.

But so far, I've had enough of the pace.

Like I said, it takes a long time.

Maybe grain 80 is too fine and I think, that grain 40 could be better in future

or grain 60 for grinding once I'm sure enough.

The bevel is for the left side still not ready.

Nevertheless, I'm going to start with the right side,

because the camera's restricting my view too much.

I have to reposition it somehow, when I get closer to my goal.

So now it's the other side's turn, here schematic for the time being.

Like I said, you don't need the hit that I mounted on the blade.

The grinding notch actually shows me clearly where I have to start grinding.

But the hit is helping me to find the right angle to be maintained.

All I have to do is align it parallel to the belt.

To create a beautiful round plunge line, I always start the process there

with slight pressure and then move the blade always at the same angle across the belt.

After I put the camera aside

I can see better where I'm grinding.

Now I'm going back to the left side where I dropped out earlier.

D2 steel is not so easy to grind like O2.

I might have preferred to have a new belt.

Instead, I try to remove the material with more pressure.

That's not optimal.

First you have to cool more.

And then you can't really hold the blade and keep it stable and steady.

You can really see the evaporating water here.

But in time lapse you can see the progress pretty good.

The grinding is approaching more and more to the scribe line.

And that's nice and parallel, too. I had not expected this.

The bevel is now almost at the torn center line arrived.

So far I am very satisfied with the progress.

I did it.

Finally the finish comes later,

where some more material has to be taken away.

Now it's the other side again, which hopefully will be symmetrical

to the already finished left side.

I now submit the blade regularly to the camera.

You can see how I pull up the edge.

And I am equally approaching the centerline of the cutting edge.

Between each of these settings lie several minutes,

where I drag and cool in water.

I like the fact that the plunge line is almost the way I had scribed it.

And that's when the polish is finally done.

In the middle I leave about 0.4 mm.

One should not grind too thinly, because it happens during quenching,

that waves form in the cutting edge or that the blade even tears.

The hit can go down again.

With the grinder, it would be gone faster, but my goal is,

to practice how to grind freehand.

The following year, I was invited to have lunch with The Queen and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace and I wore it

"They were flirting with each other, they were laughing and giggling… "It was absolutely wonderful and then he [Prince Philip] said to me in a very charming way: 'Oh, what a delightful necklace you are wearing

'" Carol added: "I said 'Oh thank you Sir,' I said my son bought it for me for my birthday last year and I said 'He got it from Argos

' "And he said: 'Oh, did he really, that's really nice.'" Reflecting on the moment, she added: "I don't know if he was just being charming and pretending he knew about it or not… that was very special

'" Back in 2000, Carol opened up on her visit to the royal venue where she was awarded an MBE

Carol said getting ready for the big moment was "hectic" as she had forgotten her handbag

Revealing all about the moment in her 2010 autobiography, Carol Vorderman: It All Counts, she revealed: "On 12 December 2000, less than a fortnight before my 40th birthday, Mum, my sister Trixie, my daughter Katie and I made our way to Buckingham Palace for the investiture

"I wish I could say I'd planned my outfit, but life was so hectic I'd forgotten a handbag," she revealed

The TV presenter went on to say she had no choice but to carry her belongings in an "old rucksack"

She continued: "I had to make do with my old rucksack, which went everywhere with me and was so big I could stuff anything into it

Carol added: "Not exactly the height of glamour." Despite the clothing mishap, Carol posed for pictures with her symbol of honour wearing a smart figure-hugging dress with knee-high boots

The host beamed for the cameras as alongside her daughter Katie, who was eight-years-old at the time

Summing up her special day, she added: "It was the most beautifully orchestrated ceremony

Boxster 986 : Comment changer les plaquettes de frein - Tuto - Duration: 10:04.

Hello, Piston Kirk is back!

Today we will see how to replace the brake pads

on a Boxster 986.

The first step is to lift the car with a jack to remove the wheel.

The jack's point of support is here.

Position it underneath, then lift the car.

The rear wheels can be locked by the parking brake.

It is therefore very easy to loosen the bolts when it is in the air

On the other hand, the front wheels are not blocked

therefore, the wheel turns when one try to loosen the bolts.

To avoid this problem,

before lifting the car with the jack,

you have to loosen the bolts very slightly,

take a full turn to unlock the bolt

The antitheft nut is located in the front trunk,

at the spare wheel, in the tool bag.

Now that we have the antitheft nut,

we will be able to slightly loosen the five bolts

then we lift the car with a jack

until the wheel does not touch the ground anymore.

unscrew the 5 bolts completely

Then remove the wheel.

Do not forget to put the wheel under the car to secure

in case the jack piston gives way.

Now that the view is clear,

we will be able to inspect the state of the brake pads.

Normally, brake pads must be checked every 15,000 kilometers.

It must be at least 2.5 mm thick.

It is necessary to measure the thickness between these two points.

If you go below that 2,5 mm limit,

the disc will start to wear the warning contact wire of the brake pad's wear indicator

and you will then see a warning light that will appear on your dashboard.

So, not only you will have to replace the contactor for a price of 9 euros each,

but in addition you willl have to use a diagnostic computer to turn off the light

and if you do not have one, you will have to go to your Porsche dealer.

Before replacing the brake pads,

we will also measure the state of wear of the disc.

For that, we have to measure the gap here.

On a 2.5L Boxster and a 2.7L, the disc thickness must be at a minimum

22 mm in front and 18 mm behind.

For 3.2L it must have minimum 26 mm in front and 22 mm behind.

As the disc is still good,

we can limit ourselves to the replacement of brake pads.

To remove the pads,

we will start by removing this clip with a pliers.

Now that the holding rod is no longer held by the clip,

we will be able to remove it by gently tapping on

using a hammer and a screwdriver.

Once the rod is removed,

it will be necessary to remove the cable of the wear indicator which interferes with the extraction of the spring.

Remove the end of the cable from the wear indicator

pressing each side with a small flat screwdriver,

then, remove the cable from the spring.

Once it's done,

nothing holds the spring back, you can remove it.

As the new pads can measure up to 9 mm more than the ones we will remove,

we will have to make room to insert them.

So, before removing the old pads,

We will first push them to stick them as much as possible against the walls of the brake caliper,

thus, we will free up space for the news pads

Normally professionals use a special tool to spread the brake pads,

but to limit costs, I'm going to use a simple pliers,

taking care to put fabric on the brake caliper to protect the paint.

Of course, the pliers is less convenient than the specific tool,

because not only must I proceed in two stages, first pressing the first brake pad then the second

but also because you have to show some strength.

The other problem,

it is that when you tighten the second brake pad, the first tends to return to its place.

It is therefore necessary to maintain with the hand the first brake pad

while squeezing the second.

Now each brake pad has been repelled, can be removed.

Once the brake pad is out,

it is easier to unclip the head of the wear indicator.

If the head is damaged or broken,

we will have to replace the whole cable.

To remove the old cable,

we will have to go to the plug that is here.

Before, you have to unclip the cable that is tied in two places.

The first clip that is near the pads

then remove the cable from the second clip that is behind.

We can now unplug,

starting by unclipping the metal latch.

As it is no longer locked, just pull the plug

then replace the new cable.

Do not forget to lock again

and put back the two clips located behind.

Before installing new pads,

we'll have a look on it.

Depending on the model, the pack of four pads will cost you between 90 and 110 euros

In theory on a 2.5L and a 2.7L

the pads are supposed to be 11 mm thick in front and behind

while on a 3.2L

it is 12 mm thick in front and 10.5 mm behind.

Yet on my new pads,

I have 1 mm less in front and 0.5 mm behind.

This less thickness is not harmless,

this represents a reduced service life of 10.5% up front

and 6.25% at the back.

That said, do not see evil everywhere,

it does not necessarily come from a desire of the manufacturer to harm his client,

this may possibly come from a manufacturing tolerance

or a desire to facilitate the passage of pads during replacement.

But I do not exclude that it is perhaps a way like any other to increase profits.

Let's close this parenthesis on the thickness of platelets.

Before installing new pads, make sure you have the right ones.

So we will compare the old with the news.

As can be seen, everything is in order, they are identical.

before putting them in the caliper it will be necessary to prepare them.

Some spray anti-squeak grease

on the surface that is in contact with the pistons

to limit noise and wear.

Others use tube grease

that they spread on the surface with the finger.

Count about 12 euros for the spray

and 17 euros for the tube.

Be careful, do not use any grease.

Special brake greases must be used

able to withstand high temperatures above 1000 ° C (1832 ° F)

For example, the grease I used can withstand up to 1400 ° C (2552 ° F)

This also prevents the parts from welding together in case of overheating.

Be very careful to put this grease on the metal surface and not on the friction surface.

Otherwise, you will have a hard time stopping your car.

We will also put a little grease on the lateral support points of the pads

Be careful not to overflow the friction zone.

Now we can slide the pads in their place,

one after the other.

Then we put back the spring.

Then pass the cable into the notch of the brake caliper

first wear indicator head in the first brake pad.

Clip the cable in the spring,

then insert the second wear indicator head into the second brake pad.

Now replace the support rod.

Be careful to put the hole up so you can insert the locking clip.

Push the rod to the stop,

then replace the locking clip.

It's not quite finished yet,

before changing the pads of another wheel,

you have to put pressure on the pistons of the brake caliper first

to push the brake pads against the disc.

Enter in the car

and press the brake pedal several times

until you get resistance.

this operation must be done between each pads change

because if you push back the pads of the 4 wheels at the same time

without returning the pistons to their original position each time,

the brake fluid of the pistons will go up in the tank

which may overflow it.

Since we have access to the brake disc,

we will take the opportunity to remove the dust that has accumulated in the holes

which will improve the cooling.

This cleanup operation is only necessary for 3.2L

because if you have a 2.5L or a 2.7L

your brake discs are not perforated

Now you can put back the wheel by tightening the bolts crosswise.

Once a bolt is put, it is necessary to put the next one in a diametrically opposite way.

For example, we put the first here,

the following there,

the third here,

the fourth there

and the last here.

Start by screwing the first turns by hand

to be sure of not distorting the thread.

Theoretically you do not have to force.

Then screw it gently until it forces.

Once the five bolts are tightened without forcing too much,

use a torque wrench,

set the tightening torque to 130 N · m

then squeeze the first until you hear a clicking sound that tells you it's good.

Then tighten the one that is diametrically opposite

and so on until the bolts are tight.

If you are on the rear wheels, the wheels are blocked by the parking brake,

so you can squeeze when the car is still on the jack.

If you are on the front wheels,

after having lightly tightened, it will be necessary to lower the jack a little bit

for the tire to come into contact with the ground with enough pressure

to block the rotation of the wheel.

Then tighten the 5 bolts to 130 N · m

then lower the jack and remove it.

Here, the first wheel is finished, it remains only to reproduce the same operation again three times.

Before you start, you need to know some things:

it may seem obvious to many of you who are used to repair cars

but I know from experience that part of my audience is composed of neophytes,

it is therefore good to recall some basic elements.

The first is that never replace the pads of a single wheel,

otherwise braking will not be uniform.

The pads must be replaced in pairs of wheels:

the two front, the two behind or the pads of four brake caliper at the same time.

The second point to know,

it is that your brake pads will reach their best coefficient of friction

after about 250 km (150 miles).

During this period of time it is better to avoid making emergency braking

as far as possible.

It's going to be time to take a ride on the road.

But before, we'll check that the pedal brake responds correctly.

Once you have pumped with your foot up to have resistance,

turn on the engine.

Normally, the brake assist must engage

and the brake pedal must go a little deeper.

Now we can take a ride to make sure the car brakes properly.

Before concluding I would like to touch on one last point:

Keep in mind that it is not just the brake pads or disc to be replaced.

the brake fluid is also damaged with time,

it can absorb moisture and becomes less efficient.

In theory, it should be replaced every two years.

If you do not have the "Traction Control" option or the "PSM" option

The replacement of the brake fluid is an operation that you can do yourself.

Attention, the brakes must be purged in a certain order:

rear right

then left back

and then right front

then left front.

if you do not follow this order

you may have problems with the ABS of the car.

If you have the "Traction Control" option or the "PSM" option

that is to say one of these two switches on the dashboard,

Warning !

To bleed the brake system,

it is imperative to use a Porsche diagnostic software

to start the purge procedure and open the valves.

It is better not to do this operation yourself.

It is better to entrust this work to your dealer

to avoid ending up with a bad braking.

Now you know how to change your brake pads

for a price ranging from 112 to 130 euros.

But keep in mind that even though the procedure is simple

she does not tolerate the slightest forgetfulness,

because unlike the previous tutorials I made,

this time, it's your safety that depends on it.

So be very meticulous and get started!

See you next time!

Why Las Vegas Gambled on Pickleball - Duration: 3:27.

RUSTY: In September, while covering the Las Vegas Pickleball Open, we had a chance to

learn more details about this unique venue.

From players to staff and even the CEO of Plaza Hotel and Casino, and find out why they

chose to gamble on pickleball at this legendary site.

Hey, it's Rusty from Pickleball Channel and we are at the world famous Plaza Hotel and

Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

This unique venue has got pickleball courts poolside.

Hey everybody, I'm joined by Grant Garcia of Plaza Hotel and Casino.

Grant, thanks for being here.

Why don't you share with folks why you guys are excited about pickleball?

GRANT: Well, we're excited about pickleball because its obviously the fastest growing

sport.

We built these courts a little over 2 years ago for locals to enjoy as well as it being

an additional amenity for the hotel guests.

We've got camps, clinics, additional tournaments planned for the future, so we're very excited

for the future.

RUSTY: And now I'm joined by Jason and Sheri.

You guys, where did you come from to come to the tournament?

JASON: We're down from Soldotna, Alaska.

RUSTY: And how's it going?

JASON: It's going great.

We're having a lot of fun.

Brought our three kids.

Enjoying the pool.

We're enjoying a bunch of rec play.

It's great.

And enjoying the weather.

RUSTY: Now I'm joined by Brian and Valerie who are players and guest here.

You guys, thanks for taking a little moment.

How's been things for you?

BRIAN: Oh, this is great.

This is one of the best tournaments we've been to.

We literally have the best room in this whole hotel.

We're literally feet away from the pickleball courts.

We can watch it from our room.

We are steps away from the jacuzzi, steps away from the pool.

And this has been awesome.

We won gold yesterday in the mixed doubles, so we're totally happy.

RUSTY: So, Jonathan, thank you so much for taking some time out of your busy schedule

to talk to me, to talk to our audience.

So when people think about Las Vegas, they think about hotels and casinos.

Tell us a little bit about what makes Plaza Hotel and Casino unique, and why pickleball?

JONATHAN: Absolutely.

Firstly, thank you for having me.

It's great to be here.

RUSTY: My pleasure.

JONATHAN: We're sitting at one Main Street.

This is the center of downtown Las Vegas.

This is where it all began.

And there's so much happening down here, so much new development, new excitement happening

down here.

Last week we had this Life is Beautiful Festival which brought 35,000 people to downtown.

The week before that was the Nascar races in Las Vegas.

The week before that we had the big blues band here.

We're a diverse property.

We just launched a new show called "The Mob Story" which is all about how the mob created

Vegas, and it's a musical with amazing dancing.

We have the Bingo room upstairs.

We're sitting in Oscar's Steakhouse.

And so we have a lot of different amenities here, and different sort of attractions, and

pickleball just made sense.

And we had this perfect space up on our 5th floor pool deck that wasn't being utilized,

and I had the opportunity to meet with a few, I guess they call themselves, pickleball ambassadors.

And they blew me away with their enthusiasm and their passion for the game.

When they told me that no hotel and casino had dedicated pickleball courts, I said, "We're

going to be the first one."

It just seemed like something we should jump on and get behind, and that's why we built

these courts.

And communities continue to grow.

And we get people stay here because of it.

We launched this week the Las Vegas Pickleball Open which is off to a great start.

And demographic is great for downtown and the Plaza, and I hope we have many, many more

events here and grow the community supporting this game because it's a fun game.

I love it.

RUSTY: Well, thank you again for your time and for everything Plaza Hotel and Casino

is doing to invest in the sport of pickleball.

JONATHAN: Thank you, thank you, thank you very much.

It's been great.
