Today are going to discuss the subject given on this slide.
Basically, it is clear, some of you have guessed already.
My name is Akaki Razmadze, and my email is indicated here.

Our subject today is Georgian scripts and we will be discussing the following issues:
How, why and how Georgian scripts should be adapted to the current reality.
We can begin with a brief historical overview, because, well, overviews are rarely anyone's favorite part.
The first Georgian script to be found and documented by scientists is - Asomtavruli,
which used to be used on churches, carved on stones like Latin scriptures.
With the development of book manufacturing - once scriptures were moved to leather materials,
Asomtavruli developed and turned into Nuskhuri, which is an angular script.
When they say Georgian writing looks similar to Armenian, this is what they mean.
Which makes sense, since the development of scripts was the same over there as well
and it's logical that the Asomtavruli that used to be used to write on stones,
would look different when written in ink.
Starting from the nineth century, both Asomtavruli and Nuskhuri were actively used and often mixed;
just like we use Latin scripts these days
with an uppercase letter after the fullstop and in given names.
All of this is what has been documented by scientists:
the script developed further into Mkhedruli, used by the rest of the population.
Well, basically, everyone was either a cleric, or a warrior back then, there were no designers at the time.
Well, okay, whoever was writing the script at the time can be referred to as the designer.
So, in short, scientists say that this is the development of the previous scripts.
However, the previous samples were not mixed with the latter.
If they used to write clerical literature, they used the two clerical scripts,
and, as I've mentioned, they did it just like we use Latin today
the first letter of the first word after the full stop would be written in Asomtavruli.
And when we finally got to the end of the twentieth century,
the end of the 80's, computers became actively used,
raising the question of how this exchange of information should take place with different scripts at use?
There was no standard for that, there was only an 8-bit standard,
which meant that there was a limited character set in the font-file and they could not be infinite.
There was enough capacity to fit only several dozen symbols in a font-file and thus,
if one wanted write something in Greek, Cyrillic, Georgian or Armenian,
these scripts would replace Latin letters, which would later cause a problem;
particularly, someone would copy the text somewhere
and it would show differently, or in Latin letters in the destination file.
This is why, many different companies gathered up and created a consortium
which was called – the Unicode – a universal system of codes
uniting different software and hardware manufacturers and many other companies,
such as Google, Microsoft, Adobe, IBM, etc.
The idea was: let's create a single standard standardizing all scriptures,
each symbol will have its code and there will be no mixing of symbols when copying.
By the end of 1991, Unicode 1.0 was released.
Now this is the approximate situation in Tbilisi of the time the Unicode was released.
It could have been released on the same day this photo was taken even, I don't know for sure.
And yes, of course, in this situation, nobody in Georgia had time for the Unicode,
there was barely any bread available for sale in the city.
And in this first version of the Unicode, only Asomtavruli and Mkhedruli were reflected,
there was nothing more here.
This, for example, is an extract from Besarion Gugushvili's note where he writes that
we have presented the de-facto standard for coding Georgian at the time
(the BPG-infotech/academy standard – as we used to call it back then),
which covered all Georgian scripts,
i.e. – Asomtavruli, Nuskhuri, Mkhedruli's Mtavruli and Mkhedruli.
Listed here are all 4 versions of the Georgian script,
however, as mentioned, Nukhuri and Mtavruli (which is called as Mkhedruli's Mtavruli by Besarion Gugushvili)
were not reflected in the first version of this Unicode.
During my internship at Monotype in Germany,
there was a Hungarian student there we would discuss this subject with
and he was very interested in the matter.
The second day after the discussion the Unicode released a new version; Unicode 8.0, if I'm not mistaken,
where, in newly added symbols, other than emojis, there was also ancient Hungarian.
And when I told him – "look, your Hungarian has been added",
he looked at me and asked me what it was.
"What do you mean?" – I asked surprised – "It's Hungarian! How do you not know?"
They then asked their friends and it turned out, nobody knew what this was.
But because this script had been used by someone somewhere,
it became a reason for these symbols to be given space in the Unicode.
And it's not just that:
if I remember correctly, there are even letters in the Unicode created by one of the fantasy writers.
Because the Unicode at its core implies that if something is ever used to write a text somewhere,
it should be in the Unicode system and it doesn't have to be just letters, it could be symbols just as well.
In the Armenian block, for example, there's space for the Armenian eternity sign
despite the fact that it is not a letter, but since it has been used in a text,
it was presented as the Armenian Eternity Sign and has been included in the Unicode.
What I wanted to say with this example is that it does not matter how or when a symbol has been used,
if it has ever been used, it should be in the Unicode.
Another example is German, where, those who know the language will understand what this symbol is.
This is the German sharp S (áš - uppercase letter), which is not used, normally.
In 2010 this symbol was allowed to be used with the ALL CAPS function in Geographical names.
This is when all letters in a word are written in uppercase.
Why this is the way it is, I am not aware,
but the fact remains that this symbol is there in the Unicode and people use it.
Another thing I wanted to point out with this example is
that it's not just letters and scripts that are reflected in the Unicode,
but also symbols, just like this one in the Georgian block.
This is a paragraph separator.
They used to write it in the beginning of the separator, where they normally put a large dot these days.
Sometimes it was used instead of space even, to separate words.
Either way, it is not a letter, it is a symbol,
and because it has been used somewhere, there is space for it in the Unicode.
Moving on to Mtavruli now which has not been included in the Unicode to this day;
Remember when I mentioned Nuskhuri was not included in Unicode 1.0?
The issue was solved in 2003 after significant efforts from Michael Everson.
Nuskhuri has been in the Unicode since then,
but not Mtavruli and this is where we should discuss the matter at hand.
The first source to provide information about Mtavruli is dated 18th century.
Paata Gugushvili writes: "The attempts of developing Mtavruli in the Mkhedruli alphabet,
as the Academic, Ivane Javakhishvili has noted, began from the beginning of the 18th century."
Nikoloz Tbileli wrote in 1728: "Mkhedruli's Asomtavruli (he means Mtavruli) used not to be before,
and now I have created it", "I came up with it".
As you can see, these letters were referred to as Mkhedruli's Asomtavruli back then.
The first examples of the use of Mtavruli in different books that I came across in the online gallery of the National Library
were dated the beginning of the nineteenth century.
These were first attempts to use Mtavruli letters in the beginnings of sentences.
However, this became active practice only in 1864,
after a new type of letters were created as a "Venuri" typeface, by Mikheil Kipiani.
This typeface already included typesetting tools used for printing, becoming a base for active printing activities.
If you look closely here, this is Iakob Gogebashvili's first Georgian alphabet and schoolbook for children,
which was later used as the foundation for the "Mother Language" ("Deda Ena")
and Mtavruli letters were also used here in the beginnings of names and sentences.
Children were taught that these were Mkhedruli and Mtavruli letters
and they would learn not just that we had uppercase and lowercase letters,
but also that a sentence should begin with an uppercase letter, just like Spanish, English, or Italian kids.
Naturally, Mtavruli letters are no longer used in that manner these days,
but, as mentioned before, this was actively practiced from 1864 to the period of the USSR,
because in the USSR it made absolutely no sense to spend extra resources on that.
There was no use of making extra effort in understanding
where the full stop was and where Mtavruli should have been used as the first letter of the word.
This is Mikheil Kipiani, the author of these Mtavruli letters. The text on his grave is written in Mtavruli letters.
This is an example of how Mtavuli letters were used after the USSR.
On these two sides it is clear that wherever Latin is used (in a Czech text, in this case)
in lowercase letters, Mkhedruli is used parallel to it,
whereas, when Latin is written in ALL CAPS, Georgian also uses ALL CAPS – Mtavruli.
Here it becomes clear that actually, Mtavruli is an ALL CAPS.
As we said, the use where the first letter used to be capitalized, is no longer active practice.
Georgian no longer features Title Case, but it used to, as it has been shown.
Here are many other examples of using Mtavruli as ALL CAPS.
We come across such use in many cases, on the wall in front of us, for example.
This newspaper is also very interesting, I never thought this newspaper would come in handy to anyone,
but when we sent the proposal to the Unicode these examples were very helpful,
because they make it clear that people used Mtavruli (the ALL CAPS) not just in titles but also in body texts,
when it came to important texts.
We also come across this on the currency.
Here there's another interesting example, but let me say something else first.
So, since there is no space for these letters in the Unicode today, what do we do?
There are several solutions.
One of them is that we take Mtavruli letters and put them in the place of Mkhedruli letters,
thus making two font-files, one for Mkhedruli and the other – for Mtavruli letters placed instead of Mkhedruli.
And when we want to write Mtavruli letters, we select a different font.
But when we select and copy this text somewhere, everything will show in Mkhedruli, correct?
Obviously, since Mtavruli does not have a code of its own.
There is another solution enabling us to keep both Mkhedruli and Mtavruli letters in a single font-file.
Here we can put Mtavruli in the place of Asomtavruli letters,
there's an example of this being done on the website of the Georgian government
www.gov.ge
and pay attention, I pause here:
Asomtavruli loads first in the menu,
those of you who know programming will understand
that the font used here is the one where Mtavruli letters are placed instead of Asomtavruli letters
and Asomtavruli shows first.
Mtavruli letters show up once the font is read from the source,
see, they appeared now, right?!
Now this raises the question, are we comfortable with this?
No search engine would search and find these results now, would it?
This is a problem, let alone the fact that the visual of the text changes when copying,
the fact that Mtavruli has no space of its own is bad even in a purely technical sense of the subject,
since it cannot be searched.
It is also an interesting matter
since many government websites require business papers to be written in "AcadNusx",
which means that business papers are processed in ASCII based fonts.
This font does not have a Unicode standard-based version,
which means the font is created in a manner the fonts used to be created at the end of the 80's.
Thus, when we have to write a letter to the State we write it how they require
and naturally, it cannot be searched for either, just like the menu bars on the government website.
This is another example, also from gov.ge.
This example is from a university website,
this is another website from different university
and I have also found an international science magazine
where articles are published to let the world know what is happening in science in Georgia
and here the requirement is that the titles are written in Mtavruli.
It's a fact that they also are aware that titles are written in Mtavruli,
but since Mtavruli has no space in the Unicode,
we are told to use another font and are pointed at the font which is not based on a Unicode standard,
thus when the text is copied, the text will show up in Latin.
There is a certain standard, which should be an issue for the Unicode as well,
since Unicode based fonts are not in use in Georgia
and for some reason we have been having trouble explaining to people that it's bad for them.
As I said this is the layout, it works in a sense that it shows,
but once it is copied, we no longer see what we want to,
or we search and it cannot be searched for, thus it is a serious problem both for us and the Unicode.
It is unfortunate that they don't understand it,
but sometimes even we are not fully aware as to what subject is in discussion.
For example, one of the Unicode representatives has addressed the IBM
asking the Georgian speakers there what they thought about adding Mtavruli to the Unicode
and the response was a surprised question:
what is Mtavruli?
Naturally, Unicode on the one hand does not understand the matter,
while on the other – neither do Georgians and that's a problem.
This is a proposal several people have come up with, with the help from numerous others
and it is there on the Unicode website, still available for everyone.
This is a 40-page document where all important counterarguments are listed
to the arguments the Unicode has presented.
And another important detail:
since Mtavruli letters came in use,
all Georgian typefaces, are presented in these Letters – Mkhedruli and Mtavruli.
So basically there is no popular typeface that does not have Mtavruli letters in it.
This is a certain standard, just like when we create a typeface for Latin
for the English or Spanish languages - Latin-based typefaces we make uppercase and lowercase letters.
You might come across some typefaces,
I think they're on www.fontfabric.com that are just uppercase,
you might even find Georgian in such a form, but in general, both are created.
This is from the nineteenth century.
This is from the twentieth.
Now this is a typeface, that was created a week ago
and all of them feature both, Mkhedruli and Mtavruli.
But where should Mtavruli letters be placed?
There is no space for that!
So they're placed here, or there and then we end up with cases such as the government website etc.
What I wanted to say here is that this is the "Venuri" typeface we digitalize at GeoLab
and we not only restore letters and add different weights they didn't use to have before,
but we also add Mtavruli letters that used to be a part of this typeface.
The important matter here is that using Mtavruli letters does not imply moved certain letters
letters while leaving others lowercase,
even the letters that are in their place, vary.
For example, you might ask what the difference is between the Mkhedruli "man" and Mtavruli "MAN",
but the difference has always been there,
even in the old typeface versions and if you pay attention,
you will see that this "man" and then this "MAN" are not different just in moving,
or put on the same line for the visuals.
These are actually different letters.
Take a closer look, there's a difference in shapes as well and this difference shows in today's typefaces as well.
If a designer is doing a good job creating a typeface,
you will see the difference between this "man" and this "MAN" – on the one hand the circle is wide,
tall and the stroke is thicker in Mtavruli letters.
Now as of the keyboard: some of you might tell me there is no chance of having Mtavruli letters on the Shift
since we've barely gotten used to the fact that "shan" "jil" "ghan" "chin"
and certain other Georgian letters are typed with the Shift key
and now we would need another 10 years to reallocate these letters and place Mtavruli on the Shift key, right?
Obviously, since we are all lazy,
but there is a way out of this, take a closer look.
If everything is as normal and we write the "shan", "chin", "ghan"
and other letters with the Shift key and then with the Alt key we type archaic letters
then we could press the CAPS LOCK key and everything would remain the same,
except we would type Mtavruli letters.
So nothing changes.
Everything will stay the same so that nobody would have to learn anything new.
Now, another question that could arise is that yes,
we get the Mtavruli letters thing, but why not just leave everything as it is?
Why bother at all?
And this opens another interesting issue,
an issue originating from psychology, design, marketing
and other fields that we require Mtavruli letters,
not just because we use them, but also because there actually is a necessity for them.
Here is one of the examples for that:
At one of the talks in Germany
(the talk was also about scripts, don't think that I would attend a speech about some other subject)
a man said that the FUHRER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.
And when banners were printed, they were printed in this exact manner – the ALL CAPS,
in the Georgian equivalent, it was written in Mtavruli
and then the speaker discussed what it could have meant had the writing not been ALL CAPS.
Would it have been as impressive,
or would it have reached down to the hearts of the people the same way this form did?
Of course, not and we also are aware of this in Georgia.
Now these are contemporary banners in Germany,
the themes have changed, the issues are different,
but the fact that ALLCAPS letters are used to expressed a certain opinion simply,
in a comprehensive and impressive manner, just like they used to be 70 years ago – has remained.
Here it says that "Nothing can tear us apart except excessive amounts of alcohol".
Pay attention though, that it says "except excessive amounts of alcohol"
and not "large amounts of alcohol"
We've also been aware of this and used to write in Mtavruli
that "THERE IS STILL A LOT TO BE DONE!"
and that we should be "UNITED TOWARDS THE COMMON GOAL!"
and to this day we write that "THERE IS STILL A LOT TO BE DONE!"
and more importantly, we not only type such important things, but also write them by the hand, in Mtavruli;
yet, unfortunately, we cannot do the same in emails or Facebook statuses
– we cannot yell that there is so much more to be done!
The author of this sign is also aware of that and they write in Mtavruli.
So everyone knows this,
but once a representative of the Unicode asks whether we need Mtavruli or not,
someone might tell them there is not much need for it, right?
And finally, here's another interesting example.
Besides the fact that this famous image exists, I love it, I love this.
I came across one about the Unicode as well,
which says "I love the Unicode"
and it got me thinking, do we actually love the Unicode?
When we write this in Georgian with ALL CAPS, we will get this.
And we might love the Unicode,
but the question is, does the Unicode love us?

The No.1 Thing You Need to Become Fluent in English This Year (And Why Most Fail) - Duration: 10:31.
Hey! This is Jack from tofluency.com and
I bloody love this time of year. It's
early January and by this time a lot of
you have thought about what you want to
achieve this year - now, we can call this a
new year's resolution and this is when
you decide to do something or to stop doing
something. For a lot of you who are here on
this channel this one thing is to learn
English. You're here because you want to
reach a high level of English and I can
see the excitement in the comments at
the moment. People seem really fired up
about reaching a high level of English
and making 2017 the year of fluency. I'm
no different.
I love setting goals and thinking about what
I want to achieve over the next 12
months and, in fact, I actually have a few
goals that I have set myself this year.
This is something I do every year and I
have a pretty good track record of
hitting these goals. Before I share these
goals I've got some bad news for you
because it's estimated that only eight
percent of people who set goals actually
achieve them.
That means over ninety percent of people
don't achieve the goals that they set
out at the beginning of the year. From
experience, you'll know this is true. Maybe
you have done this as well. But it's very
common for someone to say okay I'm going
to give up smoking;
I'm going to drink less; I'm
going to start learning English; I'm going to
get fit and healthy and then by February.
they have given up.
They've lost that initial excitement
have they've lost that initial motivation to do
what they set out to do.
The good news is that there are certain
things you can do to ensure that you
give yourself the best chance possible
of achieving the goals that you set out
for the year so i'll talk about that
soon but first here are my goals 2017...
Firstly, I want to grow this YouTube
channel to 200,000 subscribers. Now on
January the 1st, I had about 21,500
subscribers so this is a big goal. I want
to take this channel to the next level.
This is a goal that I'm most excited
about. This is my number one priority for
the year and it's going to take a lot of
work, it's going to take me making videos,
working hard, promoting the channel...
interacting with you that people who
watch it. I'm really excited about this
goal and I'm sure I'm going to do
everything possible to achieve it.
Another goal I have is to get in the
best shape of my life. So, in 2016, I put
on some weight and I didn't feel very
healthy. But this year, I'm really going
to commit to it and it's my number two
priority. Now, most people say: make health
your number one priority, you know, after
family and friends make health your
number one priority but I'm just being
honest with myself, it's not. My number one
priority is this business and my health
and fitness will come second but that
doesn't mean that I'm going to be
unhealthy,
in fact, i know that I can balance the
two to ensure that they both go together
but when it comes down to it, let's say,
on a Friday afternoon I have the choice
to make a video or go to the gym, I'll
probably make that video. My third goal
is to learn French to an intermediate
level. Now, I already have semi-decent
pronunciation because I took a
pronunciation course. I also have a
little bit of knowledge of French as
well from my time at school but that was
a long time ago and in most schools, you
know that language learning isn't really
done properly.
There's no emphasis on speaking.. it's
very difficult to make progress, so I
know very little French but I plan to
become an intermediate speaker. What's
interesting with this goal is that it's
not my number one or number two priority
it's the third priority on my list of
goals. So, I'm going to take this slowly.
I'm not in a big rush to get fluent
straightaway and that's important to
know as well: when you're planning out
these goals, think about your priorities,
in fact, that is the key of all of this.
In order for you to achieve your goal
let's
say learning English to a C1 level - check
the description to see how you can
evaluate yourself - but let's just say
it's to learn English to a C1 level,
you really need to be fired up about it.
You need to be excited about it.
You need to really just be obsessed with
achieving this - not obsessed in a bad way
but that obsession actually drives you
forward to achieve something special. And
reaching a high level of English is so
special.
Not many people do it. Many people give
up because it's a long journey. But that
doesn't mean it has to be a horrible
journey. You can make this fun, you can
make this exciting and that's why I want
you to do... if your goal for this year is
to reach a high level of English - that C1
level of English - I want you to make it a
priority and I want you to enjoy it as
much as possible. Because for me, I can't
tell you how excited it makes me feel
about trying to reach 200,000
subscribers here on YouTube.
I'm so fired up - I'm so ignited with
passion about it, I just can't wait to
reach that goal. But I'm going to enjoy
the journey along the way too. What makes
this goal exciting for me and if it's
for you reaching a high level from an
intermediate level, is that it's a little
bit scary when you think about it, you
know, it's quite scary for me to sit here
and say: okay, I want to reach 200,000
subscribers. It would be a lot easier to
say 60,000 or 80,000 or even a hundred
thousand but by saying 200,000
subscribers, it makes me feel a little
bit uncomfortable. I know that I'm going
to have to make changes - I know i'm going
to have to become a different person in
a way in order to reach this goal. But
because this goal is scary and because
it's such a big goal
it makes me excited about it and that's
again the key
it's about getting fired up about this
goal and when something is a little bit
out of your reach
if something is out of your comfort zone
then you can use that energy and get
excited and get fired up.
So, when it comes to learn English, choose
the goal for this year that gets you out
of your comfort zone. Choose a goal that
is going to help you really
really push on because if you just go
ahead on autopilot doing what you're
doing now then you won't make that big
jump.
Now, if it's not a priority for you, it's
not a priority. And you can keep
progressing at the same rate. But if you
want to speak English with confidence
this year; if you want to be able to
understand TV shows and movies and have
conversations with people; then reach
higher, choose a goal that scares you;
choose a goal that really gets you
excited about putting the work in. At this
stage, I need to tell you that if you
haven't got my book already

this five-step progress (preocess) to help you go
from intermediate to advanced or from
advanced to proficient, so, go check out

download this book for free. But before
you go, I have some extra tips for you
tips that will help you stick with your
goals for the entire year.
The first one is this: after you have
your goal, research exactly what you need
to do in order to attain this goal and
then create an action plan that is specific
to you. This is what most people miss out,
you know, most people say: okay, I need to
do the Sentence method; I need to repeat
after native speakers; I need to have
conversations with proficient or native
speakers, but they can't do this because
they don't have the schedule to do it;
they don't have the resources to do it.
So, it's really important that after you
know what you need to do, create a
routine based on your schedule not
someone elses not this imaginary
schedule but based on your real-life
situation and then slot English into
this. Going back to priorities,
maybe you need to stop doing something
in order to start doing more English. So,
again, look at your schedule and say: okay,
is this important? Am I spending my time
wisely? If not, do a little bit more
English instead. It's also important to
have that belief that you can do this.
Look at the people who have achieved
this level and get
inspiration from them. This year, I'm going
to invite people onto my channel - those
people who have learned English in a
quick amount of time and I'm going to
interview them. So, that you can see that
this is possible. And if this is you, then

finally, again, this is so important: make
the journey as enjoyable as possible.
You need to enjoy this process of
learning English. A lot of people do what
they think they have to do instead of
what they want to do.
I've made many videos on things like how
to choose the best book for you and that
just means finding books that are
interesting. There are no books that you
have to read to learn english, only books
that you enjoy reading. So, go onto Amazon,
start reading the books, check them out
see if you're going to enjoy them, and
then choose the ones that you know you
won't be able to put down. One last tip -
is this: focus on the most effective
methods. So, it's ok saying: I'm going to
study 20 hours a week. But it's what you
do with your time as well. And I have a
great method for you called the Sentence
Method. There will be a link in the

great way that you can spend 15 minutes
a day internalizing grammar and learning
new words and phrases, so please check

and today i will give to you some tips for the trick Owl flip AKA Irano Fearless
For the first tip of Owl Flip, you will need to have the Irano super clean
because its a trick that comes after the Irano and you already have the feelig of 180 after the frog
Beacause for the Owl Flip, you will do frog flip and when you are upsidedown you spin faster and strongly with your shoulder
and then you will open your legs and see the line coming and get ready to land the chest bounce
To traning before try the owl flip, you should able to do Irano not so high but fast! And another super high but slowly
The Owl flip is just this spin HIGH and FAST
When you get the feeling of the Irano low and fast
You will be able to land Owl Flip easily
So guys thats the Owl Flip and it is just Technical trick
You will do a Brazilian (AKA Frog Flip) super strongly
For me when i do the trick I think about it, Brazilian to feet (AKA Frogflip to Feet)
When i try the trick and i feel my body its upsidedown
I look over my shoulder
and open my legs to pass for Chest Bounce
Don't keep the legs together forward because you will fall at Irano
When you let your legs open, it goes straight to chest and you stay over the line
