What causes consciousness?

The hard problem of consciousness.

A thought experiment.

You have been captured by an evil scientist.

The scientist takes you into his back room,

and he says, "I am going to make exact replicas of your brain."

And you say, "that doesn't sound too bad!"

But here's the caveat: everytime he replicates your brain,

its electrical power is reduced by 1/2.

So you start out with one brain, we'll say it has one electrical power.

He makes a copy of it, and now your original brain and the copy both have

1/2 electrical power.

and he does this a few more times until you have 32 brains.

with 1/32 of the electrical power as the original brain that you came in with.

And the evil scientist laughs, "Mwahahaha!

Now you have 1/32 the consciousness as you did before!"

And you say, "but I feel the same".

Well...

Would you?

If consciousness... if experience is caused by the

electrical activity in the brain, well...

One would naturally think that by reducing the electrical activity in the brain (not

the rate that they're firing), but the sheer electrical force in the brain, if you reduce

that then you reduce consciousness, right?

And if there's no electrical activity then there's no consciousness, right?

Well, that's what the evil scientist thought.

Now, if that's the case, if consciousness, or experience, or qualia, or subjective phenomena,

or experiential phenomena, whatever you want to call it, if that's caused primarily by

electrical activity, increasing electrical activity should increase the degree to which

qualia is felt, right?

So, let's say the mad scientist makes an infinite copy of your brains.

Right?

So each copy has one over infinity times the qualia or experiential phenomena or consciousness

as the original.

ok?

Well...

At the point, that copy would be almost indistinguishable from the electrical activity produced simply

by your computer right now.

That is to say, your computer has consciousness.

Now I'm not saying your computer has consciousness, but what I am saying is that if qualia, if

consciousness is a function of electrical activity and the amplitude of that activity,

then your computer would be conscious as deductively shown by me just now.

ok, I lied there's a second thought experiment.

The mad scientist takes you back in his room.

He doesn't make copies of your brain like he did before.

Instead what he does is he takes your brain out of your body.

He puts it in a special vat, and the vat contains all the nutrients of life meaning that you

could like your brainstem.

You could lose your thalamus.

Any part of your brain you could lose.

And the rest of your brain would go on because of the vat is an oxygen-rich environment containing

lots of sugar and glucose.

Anyways, the mad scientist starts taking away your neurons.

He does it one at a time.

He chooses it randomly.

I don't know how he chooses it randomly.

He's a genius, just let him do his thing.

Ok, so he takes away a neuron, then he takes away another, he takes away another, he takes

away another--at what point are you no longer conscious?

Ok, he takes away all of your neurons except for one.

You have one neuron living in that vat.

That neuron is not conscious.

We can say that now.

Or at least, it probably isn't.

Maybe there's a few of you who are skeptical about that, but we're going to say that one

neuron is not conscious.

Let's say he leaves 20 neurons.

200 neurons, 2000.

How many neurons do you need to be conscious?

Can you be conscious with two neurons?

Well... hmm...

I don't know....

I'm not going to try to solve them myself--well, I have my own opinions, but what I'd rather

do is let them sit on the backburner in your minds to see what you make of them.

Another reason I don't want to give my own opinions: if anybody ever tells you they've

solved the hard problem of consciousness, do not believe them.

Nobody has, but there might be a few people who claim to have done so.

Carter Cookson's parents' final tragedy after being told no-one matched his organs - Duration: 3:06.

Carter Cookson's parents have told how they wanted to donate their's son's organs after his death but could find no matches

Mum Sarah Cookson and husband, Chris had desperately tried to find a new heart for their son after his premature birth on Boxing Day

Tragically, Carter died on Saturday at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital before a donor could be found to save him On Tuesday, the couple, from South Shields, South Tyneside, said they wanted Carter's organs to be used to save other young lives, but it was not to be

Speaking to ITV News Tyne Tees, Mr Cookson said: "We both said straight away, if we don't win this battle we will offer Carter's organs out to save another baby's life and we did

"And when we were asked that question, there was no hesitation at all." But they were told there were no babies the same size as Carter who needed his organs

Mrs Cookson said: "I would have loved a piece of Carter to continue in another baby because it's just a little bit easier for us to continue, knowing that a part of him is in another child

" The couple had already been through the heartbreak of losing their first son Charlie, who died aged two in 2013, which led them to set up a charity, the Charlie Cookson Foundation, in a bid to support other families with seriously ill children

Mr and Mrs Cookson said they hope more people will join the organ donation register in his memory

They told the programme about the devastating events of the weekend. Mr Cookson said: "We both knew that he was too weak and we had to make a decision to let him go and that kills you

"It's a horrible, horrible thing to do, but you've just got to keep thinking you're doing the right thing by your child

"In the end there was just me and Sarah there. "We had the songs on that he liked and we were talking to him about things he was going to do with his brother

"We told him he's going to go to a better place and one day that we would see him again

" They said they have had messages of support from around the world, and described South Shields as a "phenomenal town" after the response from locals

Mr Carter said: "For a dad and a mam to hear two South Shields brothers have made a huge difference, you know, just makes, it makes you so proud and you think the difference Carter has made to organ donation, I'm in awe of a boy who was only three weeks old

"He's made me into a stronger person now."

 Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has opened the door for Denis Suarez to join Arsenal

 The Spaniard is Gunners head coach Unai Emery's primary target in the January transfer window, with talks ongoing between the two clubs over a deal which would see the playmaker reunited with his former manager at Sevilla

 A sticking point is understood to be the arrangement of the deal Barcelona want Suarez to leave on a permanent deal, but a lack of money at the Emirates Stadium means the north London outfit can only sign players on loan this month

 Although recent reports claim Arsenal could sign the midfielder permanently in the summer

  Speaking about a move for Suarez after his side's 2-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday, Emery said: "The club is working with a situation which can help us

 "I cannot speak about individual players, but I know we are working on different possibilities if it can help us for these four months for our competition

"  Now the Spaniard appears to have been given a massive boost in his bid to land Suarez

 Following Barca's rather surprise capture of ex-Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, Valverde admits the players within his squad who haven't played much this season could leave before deadline day

 Suarez certainly falls into this category having made just six appearances across all competitions thus far

  "We are happy with the squad but there are always possibilities for departures for those who maybe do not feature as often, Valverde said, as reported by the Mirror

 "Those players could stay here and we would be happy or they could leave in search of more opportunities, we will evaluate all possibilities for them

 "We work internally and there is a lot of planning involved of which I am a part, but we will see how the market progresses
