A god, a giant and a god of technology.
In 2011 Marvel had already presented a good part of its great heroes on the screens,
but it lacked a guy who symbolized everything that they wanted for this new cinematographic universe.
It was time for Marvel Studios to make a period film to introduce Captain America.
Set in World War II, this would be the movie that would link directly to the Avengers, but that would also change a lot within the studio.
Now, in the 10 Year Marvel Special, let's go back in time to find out how the Sentinel of Liberty came to life in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Like most of Marvel's heroes, Captain America had a few versions on the screen before joining Marvel's MCU,
as the studio calls all the films released since Iron Man.
The first version came in 1979, with a TV movie that hardly remembered the comics
then came a movie in the 1990s that brought just the extra scenes from the movie that we are going to talk about,
which aside from taking those bad impressions, had the mission to continue the legacy of Thor, Iron Man and Hulk.
The character's rights had passed through several hands and countless projects were considered.
Most of them wanted to tell a story of the Captain in the present times and discard the origin in the Second War.
Kevin Feige was on the other hand. Making a period film was more than necessary,
it was the ideal way to diversify the films from the studio and to present the character.
And like the previous films, the directors who went through the project already kind of were among those chosen by Marvel.
Iron Man's Jon Favreau and Louis Leterrier of Incredible Hulk came to negotiate for the project,
but Feige had a favorite in mind: Joe Johnston.
Little known name of the general public, Johnston is seen as an icon within Hollywood
for having participated in very important films for a whole generation.
And the connection between the two went beyond the admiration of the producer.
The thing is that Feige needed someone with the desire to make an action movie,
a period film and a superhero movie at the same time.
And Johnston got on board with everything.
The idea of making a hero movie in the middle of World War II needed a more intense and bigger stage construction
than the previous films.
Filming was done in London and almost everything was built from scratch, from the little houses to the costumes.
In addition to all the other sets that showed the interior of Hydra, antagonistic organization of the film,
and the laboratory that turns Steve Rogers.
And since it could not be any different, Chris Evans was not Marvel's first choice.
Joe Krasinski and Ryan Phillipe even did auditions for the role, and they didn't get in.
The final choice was Evans, who had already lived a hero on the screen, the Human Torch in the early films of the Fantastic Four.
But even after being chosen, he was not sure if he wanted to go through with it.
He has always been known for being more discreet, less party-oriented and has always said he wants to be a director.
And whether he wanted to or not, he was going to be Captain America for at least six more films if he accepted.
The fact is that the blue-eyed blonde style and the American look of Chris Evans fell like a glove in the character,
especially when Marvel decided to make him the questioner of everything that happens in the Universe of the theaters.
But before reaching this stage, they had to transpose the comic pages of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby to the screen.
How to make that uniform become something believable?
Perhaps more important than the clothing itself are two accessories that shape the Captain: the helmet and the shield.
And these two gained special attention.
But it's good to remember that before wearing it all, Steve Rogers was a skinny, skinny guy with a giant heart and guts.
Chris Evans could handle the charisma, but he would not be able to be thin or weak enough for the audience to really believe in the transformation.
To achieve this, more than 10 visual effects companies got involved in production to make Steve skinny as perfect as possible.
And it was not just computer graphics, he had a stunt double, he had motion capture.
Look, whatever you imagine to make us really believe that.
And if in the other films SHIELD was quoted and explored briefly,
Marvel had the best chance here to explain their origin and their real role in that world.
or that they brought Hayley Atwell to live Peggy Carter,
Rogers' romantic couple and one of Marvel's most important agents
in addition to Dominic Cooper, who lived the young version of Howard Stark, Iron Man's father.
In addition to them two had another essential supporting for the film: Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers' best friend.
Little known to the general public, it would become one of the icons of the future stages of Marvel
and so the studio signed a seven-film contract with Sebastian Stan.
The thing now was to deal with the opposite of SHIELD, the Hydra.
The organization is always present in Captain's comic books
and plays a major role in innumerable Avengers' adventures.
In order to make it believable, Marvel was inspired by a number of unsuccessful Nazi experiments
and turned the Hydra into a sort of special order from the axis of evil.
And to symbolize all this, there was the figure of the Red Skull,
the villain with one of the most incredible visuals in the entire Marvel universe and that would have Hugo Weaving as the responsible to represent him on the screens.
And it was literally from the hands of the Red Skull that came one of Captain America's most important connections to the Marvel Universe: the Tesseract.
That magic cube that is at the center of the plot of the First Avenger movie
would be the protagonist of the super-team movie that would debut in a few months
and would still be important after it.
But one scene caught the audience by surprise and finally put all the Avengers in the same place and in the same era.
Since the Iron Man release, few Marvel films have been as well received by critics as Captain America.
The tone of the epoch, the look that blended the comics with the reality of war, and the action commanded by Johnston pleased many people,
but not so much the audience.
In the end, the reactions were mixed and the movie box office did not disappoint, but it was halfway there.
In fact, that did not matter to Marvel, who looked at the film as an opportunity to introduce the hero who would become the country's symbol of resistance,
questioning, and freedom in the very near future.
But before evolving into his individual plot, the Captain would show that leadership and principles have no epoch.
Alongside Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Nick Fury
he would fulfill the dream of generations and generations who read comic pages and pages,
dreamed many nights of seeing their heroes in flesh and blood on the screens
and who always believed in the day that those men and women who wore uniforms and fought for the oppressed, for that matter
they would finally become synonymous with success.
It was the time of the Avengers.
And in the next episode of the 10 Year Marvel Special, we will finally talk about the movie that changed not only the genre of superheroes,
but the cinema as a whole: The Avengers.
Let's discuss the difficulties of unite the actors, of hiding the details of the plot, of mainly managing to make that very different team work
and show how the whole world has changed since this team dominated pop culture once and for all.
