[#BB40 | Day 31] Is Pinterest Listening to Me? - Duration: 2:32.
I received an email from Pinterest today, saying that they found some pins that might
be up my alley, and they're all about Universal Studios.
The weird thing is, I haven't logged in to my Pinterest account for at least two years.
I just checked and the only thing in there is the Fred Savage pinboard I created in 2015.
So all of the travel blogs and websites I used to research our trip to Universal Orlando
this past summer wouldn't have even touched my Pinterest account, which has been effectively
dormant.
And I didn't use Google authentication to create my Pinterest account, so I don't believe
there's a connection there.
Besides, that trip was over two months ago, why would it start showing up now?
Oddly enough though, I had a conversation with a colleague earlier this week about why
he should go to Universal when he heads down to Orlando for a conference soon.
I didn't Google it to show him anything, it was strictly us chatting about it in person.
Which makes the timing of the email from Pinterest even more suspicious.
I Googled "is Pinterest listening to me," and there were enough articles to make me
believe that I'm not the only one growing suspicious about this.
Google's offical response to one of these articles is that does not share audio data
that it collects with third parties, and goes on to state that their policy for app developers
is that apps may not collect information without the user's knowledge.
But how can all of this be explained?
It happens too frequently to me and others I've talked about this with for it to be coincidence.
A few weeks ago a different colleague was telling me about the great social media content
that Chewy.com puts out.
I don't have any pets, nor have I ever visited their websites or social media profiles, but
that night at home an ad for chewy popped up in my facebook newsfeed.
There's no reason for that to have come up for me organically, so I'm pretty convinced
that there's something creepy going on here.

RCAH Alumni Stories: Live Your Learning - Duration: 7:03.
- At RCAH we don't have just one path
that we're going to take after graduation.
We can go anywhere.
Everyone takes a different path and everyone does
something different that they're passionate about.
That is something amazing about being an RCAH graduate
is this community of people you can keep up with,
that are all, all over the world, making,
making the world a better place in some way.
- My name is Mark Sleeman.
I graduated in 2012.
- My name is Moussa Traore.
- Hi, I'm Jackie Guzman.
- My name is Augusta Morrison.
I graduated from RCAH in 2012.
- I'm a College Advisor, Hazel Park High School
through MSU College Advising Corps.
- I now work at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
- I am an Education Associate.
- My plan is to go to law school.
- I learned a lot about sort of the intersection
of education and social justice,
and just got a lot of direct experience working with kids,
working with middle schoolers, lesson planning,
doing service projects with kids,
and all those things really helped sort of cement
my desire to become a teacher.
- I remember early on taking classes with Dylan Miner
and seeing that a professional artist was making a career
from making art.
That was kind of the first time that I had met
someone that did that, and that really I think
opened up my eyes to pursuing my sort of creative endeavors,
and seeing if I could use my creativity
to make a career myself.
I don't think I would've thought
that was even a possibility if I wasn't in the RCAH.
- I've always been someone with competing passions.
I always felt trapped between worlds
and RCAH has opened the doors, so that I can actually,
you know, traverse them,
as I desire, and that sense of equilibrium
has been very, very valuable.
That has allowed me to pursue a career in politics
while feeling very true to myself and to the RCAH student
who loved his Guillermo Delgado painting class.
- The language proficiency component
and the study abroad component of the RCAH,
were really beneficial to me.
Now, in my current job, I speak about 50 percent Spanish
to all of our families, many of whom are only Spanish
speakers, and being able to speak Spanish with the parents
really helps me be informed with what decisions
I make for our program.
- That's what an RCAH degree is all about.
It's about taking all the best parts of yourself,
all the things that you love the most,
and putting them together in order to create
this beautiful, exciting fantastic career.
- My name is Laura Collier.
I'm a 2016 RCAH graduate.
- Ben Thorp, graduated in 2014.

I graduated from the RCAH in 2011.
- I'm doing a year of service with AmeriCorps
at Allen Neighborhood Center.
- I currently work as a reporter with WCMU public radio.

Program Associate with the Council of Michigan Foundations
in Detroit.
- I'm currently the Digital Communications Coordinator
for the National Forest Foundation,
in Missoula, Montana.
- I think the main thing is that RCAH teaches us
to be life-long learners.
I kind of had the necessary mindset and some of the ways
of thinking and working with other people,
that allowed me to learn art ed pretty quickly,
and so you, RCAH made me really well-rounded and open
in that way which I'm very thankful for.
- And you're not just sitting in a class
and listening to a professor.
You're actively engaging with students.
You're actively engaging with the professors.
You're actively encouraged to expand
your ability to think and speak for yourself,
and it's paying dividends.
Now I'm able to clearly articulate what I'm thinking.
I'm able to clearly articulate strategy
and that's because I learned to speak clearly
and concisely and (laughs) speak up for myself as well.
- Being able to collaborate effectively,
with colleagues and creatively problem solve,
is something that we really exercised a lot
in my RCAH classes, especially while sitting
around a table together and that seems to happen a lot
in my workplace now, so those skills transferred
over very well.
- One thing I really loved as a student
was having conversations with my fellow students,
and I think that helps you build really important
collaboration skills, that you can use
in your professional life.
You can use if you're going to pursue an advanced degree.
- In liberal arts, you learn how to make connections
between people.
You can be an interface or a bridge between
different sects of people, whatever they are.
And it doesn't really matter what profession
you go into, you can take those skills and apply them
in any profession.
- My name is Bekah Galang.
- My name is Matt Radick.
- My name's Nicole DiMichele.
- Hi, my name is Rae Chaloult.
I graduated in the Spring of 2016.
- I graduated in 2013,
and I now live in Seattle where I work as a video producer.
- I graduated in 2010, and I am the General Manager
of Avalon International Breads.
- I'm coming back to Michigan State in the Fall of 2017,
to pursue a higher ed degree, to pursue a Masters degree,
in Student Affairs Administration.
- I am currently serving as a Program Director
for a national nonprofit called America SCORES.
- Here I am at, you know, this counseling office
and I'm the Assistant Director.
So my job is to create community, you know,
create shared vision, and then figuring out
how to turn that into the work we do on a daily basis,
into the marketing and to be able to create a community
around that vision.
That's totally an experience from the RCAH.
- I learned so much about just culture period, in RCAH.
That was one of my biggest takeaways.
Being able to interact with people
from different backgrounds, learning and being open-minded
to their experience as well as reflecting on my own,
and how can we come together and be of one community.
- RCAH has really allowed me to gain some
deep and meaningful relationships that I don't think
I would have been able to gain through any other major.
- To make education meaningful and powerful,
you need a community to help you do that because
nothing in this world works in isolation.
That's something that I think RCAH teaches you very well,
is not just that you need people,
but how do you work with people?
How do you problem solve together?
That was something that I thought was really,
really unique to RCAH.
