Hi guys. I've got a book haul today, which is something I didn't think I was going to be doing for quite a while
because I have not bought a single book since my last book haul, which was in August I think.
But I have been sent quite a few books and also it was my birthday in September, so I received a few books then.
And also, when I say I haven't bought a single book, apparently for me, when I'm on a book buying ban,
graphic novels just don't count as books. So although I haven't technically bought a single novel,
I have bought quite a few graphic novels because I'm slightly addicted to them.
But I get through them very quickly, so I feel as though they don't technically count
because they're not sitting on my TBR for ages.
Or at least, that's kind of the excuse I like to tell myself when I buy far too many graphic novels.
But because I do have quite a few to get through, I'm just going to get started and get straight on into it
because I have an incredibly eclectic mix of books here.
I'm looking forward to picking them up and I will just get straight on into it.
I'll start with the books that I received from my family for my birthday, which was back in September.
The first being 'Sounds Like Me: My Life so far in Song' by Sara Bareilles.
And this I could not be more happy with because Sara Bareilles is my absolute favourite singer of all time
and she has been for basically my entire life.
Her album was the second album I ever bought and I can so clearly remember buying it
This is kind of like an autobiography but it is essentially a different collection of essays
on a load of her songs that she has written. And it's kind of about what her life was like when she was writing it
and what inspired it and things like that. Which I am so excited about
because her songs are my favourites and they just make me happy.
I think such an incredibly talented songwriter.
Also a lot of the songs she talks about in this, are some of my absolute favourites of hers.
And there is one from 'Waitress', which is my all time favourite song.
So I'm really excited about this and I'm really looking forward to knowing the stories behind
some of my all time favourite songs and a little bit more about my all time favourite singer.
I then have 'Tangleweed and Brine' by Deirdre Sullivan and illustrated by Karen Vaughn.
This is a short story collection of fairytale retellings and there are retellings of things like
'Cinderella' and 'Red Riding Hood' and 'A Little Mermaid' and I absolutely love fairytales and fairytale retellings.
They are some of my favourite things to read. And I'd actually not heard of this before
but my Mum picked it up and thought it sounded like something I would absolutely love
because it does sound like something I should absolutely love.
She'd actually thought that I'd mentioned it before but I hadn't, which makes me even more excited about it
because it is so rare now that I get to pick up a book that I don't know anything about and that I haven't heard of.
And the illustrations are so pretty. So I'm thinking I'll slowly make my way through this and dip in and out of it
reading the short stories because it sounds like it could be a really, really interesting read.
Next I have a graphic novel, which is 'Bandette: Vol, 1'. I'd been pining over this when we were in France on holiday
and my Mum and Dad snuck away and picked up a French copy of it because I absolutely love superheroes
and female superheroes and this is basically about a superhero in Paris and it just sounds
absolutely fantastic but I can't read French. I don't know French, as much as I would like to.
So I then picked up the English copy of it because I did walk into the French bookshop,
probably about ten times, deciding whether or not to buy it. So I'm very happy that I actually now have it.
My brother also got me a graphic novel and that is 'Vincent' by Barbra Stock
and this is basically an autobiography, well not an autobiography, a biography of Vincent Van Gogh's,
Vincent Van Gogh? I'm not sure, his life. It's basically a biography of his life
and he is my absolute favourite artist and I'm not an art person.
But there is something about his art I absolutely love.
And when we were in France on holiday, we went to one of the places where we painted my absolute favourite
painting of all time and I can't remember the name. It's not 'Starry Night' but it is basically the
painting of the night time restaurant, which I will put on somewhere the screen because it is absolutely
gorgeous and we went to that restaurant. We didn't eat in it because it was expensive
but we did go and see it and took some photos of it. So I'm really excited to read through this
and also the restaurant that we saw is in this, so I'm looking forward to it
and the artwork in it is absolutely gorgeous.
They also got me the signed edition of 'Wonder Woman; Warbringer' by Leigh Bardugo.
Which I am incredibly excited about because I absolutely loved the movie
and I've heard fantastic things about this. And I just can't get enough of reading about superheroes.
They are my favourite things, I just love them.
I don't really know anything about the storyline of this and where it fits on the timeline with the movie
but I'm very, very excited about this one.
I also have 'Tower of Dawn' by Sarah J. Maas, which is the, I'm not sure.
I don't know what book this is in the 'Throne of Glass' series at this point. I thought it was meant to be a
novella but that is not the size of a novella. But I am both very excited and utterly terrified to read this
because I love absolutely Chaol but also I know this series is so problematic.
I'm excited, terrified, intrigued. I don't know what to feel about this book and I'm putting it off.
I have a lot of feelings about it, so one day I will read it.
And last for my birthday my family got me 'Ms Marvel, Vol 6: Civil War II' and I could not be happier with this
because 'Ms Marvel' is my absolute favourite thing to read, in the entire world.
And also, 'Spiderman' is on the back. So that just makes it even better and I am very excited to read this.
The next few books I have were very kindly sent to me from publishers, but
the first two I won from Goodreads giveaways. Which was kind of really cool because I never win anything.
But the first one is 'The Chaos of Longing' by K. Y. Robinson, which is a gorgeous poetry collection
and I'm so excited to look through this properly because the poems that I've read so far have been fantastic
and the cover is stunning. And then the other book I won from a Goodreads giveaway is
'Things a Bright Girl Can Do' by Sally Nichols. And this I believe is a historical fiction
about the Suffragette movement and follows two women in the suffragettes
and the romance that happens between them. And it's basically about them dealing with, not only being a
part of the Suffragette movement, but also being in a relationship with each other, as they are both women.
And it just sounds absolutely fantastic and I haven't read a historical fiction in ages and this sounds brilliant.
And once again, the cover is absolutely gorgeous.
Vintage Books then very kindly sent me 'Hagseed' by Margaret Atwood.
Which I believe is a retelling of 'The Tempest' or is inspired by 'The Tempest.'
And I've not read or watched 'The Tempest'. How many times can I say that?
But this sounds really interesting and I've not watched 'The Handmaids Tale'. I haven't read it either.
So I've not had any experience with Margaret Atwood's writing. So I'm excited to get into this one.
Especially since I don't really know what it is about, at all.
I was then also very, very kindly sent a couple books from Penguin.
The first being 'The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock' by Imogen Hermes Gowar.
All I know about this is that it's a historical fiction, with I think a little bit of fantasy
and there is a mermaid in it and I hear mermaid and instantly want to read it.
Probably because I think of 'The Little Mermaid', which I'm 99% certain I know this is not going to be anything like
But I'm really, really intrigued by it. It sounds very different from other books that I've read
and it sounds really interesting. And this is coming out on 8th February next year.
They also sent me 'Undercover Princess' by Connie Glynn, who is 'Noodlerella' here on YouTube
and I am so excited about this. I absolutely love Connie and her videos.
She always just seems like the loveliest person. And this is a middle grade/young adult,
about a girl who is a princess and all she's ever wanted to be is anything but a princess.
And then when she goes to boarding school, she finds herself roomed with a girl who is
completely and utterly obsessed with princesses and that sounds fantastic.
It's also giving me a lot of Disney vibes and I think this is probably going to be
a little bit closer to Disney than the other one but I am super excited about it.
Because I am always excited about anything that gives me any kind of Disney vibe
and anything that has princesses in it and again, the cover, stunning!
And lastly they sent me two books for Black History Month. The first being 'Bone' by Yrsa Daley-Ward.
This is a poetry collection and again, I've looked through some of the poems and it is absolutely stunning.
So I'm looking forward to making my way through this and they also sent me
'Changing My Mind' by Zadie Smith, which is a collection of essays by Zadie Smith.
I have heard so many fantastic things about Zadie Smiths writing.
My Mum is actually currently reading one of her books, which I'm hoping to read after she's finished with it.
So I'm looking forward to this but I will probably read it once I've actually read some of her books.
Next I have 'Blackbird of the Gallows' by Meg Kassle and this I believe is a paranormal,
romance kind of thing. I'm not entirely sure but it sounds really interesting and I never read paranormal.
So I'm excited to dip my toe into that genre because I've just not really tried it out.
I got this from my PageHabit box and it's come with a load of annotations from the author in it.
Which I am super excited about. Also if you would like to try out the PageHabit box,
I will leave a link to it in the description box, along with a coupon code for you to get either
free shipping or $5 of your box. But I'm really intrigued by this because not only do I not know anything about it
and not really know anything about the genre. I'm excited to be able to kind of know a little bit about
the authors writing process, when I read the annotations. So I'm excited and very intrigued.
And last for the books that I was sent from publishers, YAHQ very kindly sent me a copy of 'Zenith'.
I'm not entirely sure how to pronounce it but this is by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings.
And is came in this really cute bow, with a little spaceship charm
and a load of these little black star confetti, which is now all over my room.
I believe this is a sci-fi following an all female space crew and it sounds like it could be a
really, really fun read. So I'm looking forward to this and this is coming out on 11th January.
And lastly I have the graphic novels that I accumulated over the past couple of months.
That apparently, in my brain, don't count as buying books.
Although, I am still kind of proud of myself for not technically buying a book.
But I bought graphic novels. I don't know. I'm trying to find a loophole here. I don't think I really have one.
But the first one I have is 'Chew, Vol.2' by John Layman and Rob Guillory.
I read the first book in this series a couple of years ago and absolutely loved it and I hadn't bought the
second one because I couldn't find it anywhere that wasn't super expensive.
But the other day it came up on the Amazon marketplace super cheap, so I picked up a copy
and I'm really excited to carry on with this series because it is basically just the strangest story ever.
I then also picked up 'Lumberjanes, Vol.2' for kind of the same reason as that.
Is that I just found it super cheap. I haven't read volume one of this yet but I'm pretty certain I'm going to
absolutely love it and I couldn't not pick this up when it was, I think, £2 instead of the usual £14.
So I'm very excited about this. Also having the second volume means I'll probably pick up the first volume
quicker because then I'm not worried I'm going to get pulled into a series
and will have to wait ages to read the next one.
I then also have 'Goldie Vance' by Hope Larson, Brittany Williams and Sarah Stern and this is volume one.
It's basically about a sixteen year old female detective and it sounds like so much fun.
It sounds little bit 'Nancy Drew'/'Veronica Mars' and I'm very excited about it.
I've been wanting to read it for ages and the artwork in it is absolutely gorgeous.
So I'm thinking I will probably pick this up pretty soon.
I then have 'Slam! Vol. 1' which is basically about an all female rollerblading team
and it just sounds like so much fun and unlike anything I have ever read before.
The artwork, once again, is absolutely gorgeous. It is also written by one of the writers from 'Moana'.
So I have high hopes for this because if they're writing for Disney, I'm pretty sure they're going to be able
to write an awesome graphic novel. Or at least I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will be able to.
I then have 'All New, All Different Avengers. The Magnificent Seven'.
And I don't really know too much about this, other than it fits into 'Ms. Marvels' timeline.
I've been wanting to get into more of 'The Avengers' comics but I've not really known where to start.
So I thought one that would kind of fit in with 'Ms. Marvels' story would work really well because
I have read all of the 'Ms. Marvel' comics, up until the point she enters this one.
So I'm hoping that I enjoy it and I am very excited to read about 'The Avengers'
and read more of 'The Avengers' characters because I just love them.
I also have 'Gotham Academy, Vol.1' by Becky Cloonan, Brendan Fletcher and Karl Kerschl.
I've not read any DC comic or graphic novels. So I thought this would be a good place to start
because it just seems like it will be really fun and also I've heard fantastic things about it
and the artwork looks absolutely fantastic and I've just wanted to read this for absolutely ages.
So I finally bit the bullet and bought it with some of the book vouchers that I got for my birthday.
I also believe that at some point, there is a tie-in with the 'Lumberjanes' graphic novels.
Which is another reason I thought this would a pretty good place to start with DC comics.
I then have 'Power Up' by Kate Leth and Matt Cummings.
I know next to nothing about this, other than it's a sci-fi, has an incredibly eclectic cast of characters, including a goldfish.
I bought it because it just sounded very bizarre and really interesting and fun
and also I love the artwork. But also so many of the comics and graphic novels I'm reading at the moment
are all parts of series but sometimes it's just really nice to have a standalone
and read something that concludes itself in one volume.
So that it why I picked this up and I'm really excited about it
because it just seems so bizarre and really, really interesting.
And the last graphic novel I have and the last thing in this haul is one that I am so incredibly excited about
and that is 'Scooby-Doo, Vol.1' by Keith Griffen, J.M. DeMatteis and Howard Porter.
This is a comic book of 'Scooby-Doo', which makes me so, so happy because I absolutely love 'Scooby-Doo'.
They all look so completely different and it just seems like it will be so much fun
and I'm really intrigued to see what this is going to be because it's either going to be absolutely brilliant
or just entirely bizarre or a mixture of both.
So I'm both excited about this but also slightly nervous because I'm assuming this is going to be
a little bit different from the 'Scoody-Doo' that I grew up with but I'm very excited about it.
So that is everything in todays haul and all of the books that I have somehow managed to accumulate
over the past couple of months. I'm not going to lie, I am proud of myself for the fact
that I haven't bought, technically, a book. Graphic novels, yes. Novels, no.
And I think this is the longest time I have gone in a couple of years without buying a book.
But that may also be because I've been watching far too much T.V.
But I am extremely excited about the graphic novels that I bought and all of the other books in this haul.
I'd absolutely love to know if you have read any of these and what you thought of them
because I really don't know much about most of them. I'd also love to know which was the last book that you
bought so I don't feel quite so ridiculous. Also whether you would count graphic novels in a book buying ban.
And you are very welcome to lie to me about that to enable me a little bit. I wouldn't be mad.
But that is it for today. I will leave the links to my Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, Goodreads, Blog and Snapchat
in the description box below, so feel free to follow me on any of those if you would like.
And I just hope you are having the most wonderful day, bye!
