Since when did you start with this hobby, when did you become a collector?
I think that officially since…. I mean all my life I collected my toys and I played with them,
the problem
is that since I was very young I always thought they never looked like the ones on the movies
I had this modeller's soul.
So to all of my original collection I put them epoxy clay, I re-sculpt them, I painted them matte and painted them
as the ones from the movies, it was really cool for its time and everyone was always asking me
Hey, where did you get these?
But as time passes by you realize that what gives value to the toys is keeping them on its original state.
On 1994, I was walking in Miami and it was the first time I saw a collectors store, a vintage toys store.
That didn't exist in the 80´s.
During the mid-90´s the collectors stores started opening in the USA and of course in México.
I went crazy, I entered the store and there everything started.
But did you start as a modeller or as a toy collector?
I started as a modeller since I was six years old, I really liked it. I really liked doing World War II aircrafts.
There wasn´t many science fiction modeling at that time.
Of course
But when I was a kid in 1978 MPC started coming out with the Starw Wars spaceships all the models that we know.
The model kits started with Aurora during the 50´s?
The modeling started during the 50´s. Yes, during the 50´s, with brands like Airfix, Aurora.
If you see the toys nowadays, the good ones, what they are trying to do is a perfect model.
If you see the new R2D2 made by Takara Tamashii, it worths 400 usd, it´s an exact replica, it´s amazing!
So, what are they trying to do? Replace modeling. But when I was a kid modeling was totally different.
Modeling was what you wanted to see, it added detail that toys didn't have.
Today´s kids don't have the patience to say I am going to take one week doing this, I am going to put the stamps,
and I am going to paint it,
your dad being with you, the illusion of painting. Crafting, handmade stuff, doesn't exist anymore.
That´s what we were talking about the films. We had an amazing talk about Blade Runner
Nowadays, young people think that a movie like that is long and boring.
I want to ask you and the viewers a question.
If you go to the movies and you sit for two hours to see a piece of art such as Blade Runner 2049
It was made beautifully, the crafting it has is amazing, it´s been thirty years that we don´t see a movie like this.
So what happens with their daily lifes? If you think BR 2049 is slow, then your life is miserable.
If 2049 bores you, what about going to the ice cream shop or to the dry cleaner?
Of course
I mean you´re dead. Everything is the reflection of how we see things.
You may see an old piece of plastic and I see a piece of art on a vintage toy, it´s the same, maybe people is losing sensibility.
And I think is becoming a bigger problem with the new generations, I think that one day maybe...
That´s why I like to call it Modern Archeology because I feel as if I am preserving the treasure
from different generations,
I am the guardian of my collection but just for now. Somewhere in the future, kids are going to be asking
themselves "But how can I play with this? How do you grab a toy and what´s its objective?"
Or they are going to tell you that the AT-ST walks really slowly. I am going to explain to you how far this has come,
you get a figure such as a Hot Toy, and you can put it in fourty different positions.
Few people know how to articulate organically a figure.
How you are going to put it, the position of the head,
how you turn its chin, what's the perfect position so the figure reaches its full majesty "out of the box".
HT launched a figure of Chewbaca, two years ago. You got to comb it for a year,
it had a weird type of glue and it comes as the Pink Panther when it came out of the washing machine,
all fuzzy!
You have to brush it?
For one year you have to brush its fur.
Few are the people you see in YouTube or in pictures of their Chewbaca that is combed.
I mean, people took it out of its box and display it just like that.
When I saw your collection for the first time, something that amazed me, was how you displayed it,
because you realize that what matters is not only the piece itself,
but the lightning it has, how you display them.
Many collectors make the mistake of thinking that the more I have, the happier I am,
but you are not paying attention to where you have it, how you have, are you really enjoying it?
Because I know people that have enormous collections but they got them in cellars or in a room inside boxes.
I always tell them: "Invite me to see your collection".
and they tell me that they got everything inside boxes, well I don't care, we open them one by one.
So the day I saw your collection I was very shocked and I learned that you got to go little by little,"
"Less is More" (Menos es más)
Less is more, exactly. And pay attention to each and every figure. Maybe you are going to be collecting less,
but you´ll be able to buy showcases and take care of your figures.
and when you come back from work feeling tired, you may sit down, grab a beer and enjoy the figures.
I really fell in love with your collection,
I want my audience to be a part of this. I thank you for the invitation to your cave.
¡A esta Cueva de Hombres!
Exactly, I took courage and asked you for this interview here at your place because you have vintage stuff but
also modern stuff,
and we were talking about that, of the comparison that we can see over there
with the 1977 Chewbaca and the one from Hot Toys.
It´s nice to see that contrast. Personally I wouldn't dare to do it yet, I think it´s a big world,
and it´s nice that you have it.
Many people from over the world come around, people from the Chezch Republic, inglish people,
even SW actors are going to be coming over soon.
But something that I really like is people that come over and ask "How much money do you got in here".
They don't understand the passion, I mean I am going to tell you something, I got few figures inside boxes,
and what I got boxed is because I already have one loose.
If I got to choose between loose or MIP. I would rather have everything opened.
I'm impressed about people that don´t open their toys because it will lose its value.
Well, that´s a legendary debate.
So let me ask you, you care more about the value than the object itself.
Let me give you my point of view. Let´s say that from a million pieces that came out of that figure,
in forty years…
No, I meant the people that keep their new stuff boxed.
Oh no, you are talking about new stuff...
I understand that if I find that Death Star over there, there are only few boxed,
I got it in AFA boxed.
And you can get 20 opened but boxed you can´t.
The one MIP its very scarce I will not open it.
There´s always one guy that says, "I got a vintage that´s worth 2,000 usd and I will open it,
There's a party at the Hotwheels convention in LA on Saturday´s night that´s called Ripping Party
in which old collectors get together and open up a 1968-1973 Hot Wheels.
There were cars and vans that worth 1200 to 1500 usd and the people didn´t care.
It´s easier to find a loose figure than a boxed one. So if you want a loose one, sell the MIB and buy two loose.
In that type of figures I agree with you completely. I meant the people keep closed their new stuff
Yes, that they go to Walmart, buy a BS figure and keep it closed.
Exactly, that´s nonsense. I don't know, in México or in the whole world,
how many vintage collections carded are out there.
I don't think many, I could say that this is one of the few carded in their first edition.
That is something that I like the most from what you got here, that is the vintage collection packaged
On its first edition
And in an excellent shape
And it´s hard to keep it this way
And we can see Jack Face, The Last Seventeen
Half of this figure came in AFA boxed
Really?
What happened?
I took a hammer and free them, because for me it´s more important to have them like this, I don't care about the AFA.
I have never thought about the money, I have never thought about how much they cost.
Don´t you hate when people ask you... for me the most annoying question is
How many toys do you have?
If you ask me, I have no idea.
Me neither
It´s not something to brag about.
Whoever asks you that is because they have no idea of what collecting is about.
That´s right, it´s as if I loved Monet or Van Gogh or Rembrandt, and I entered
somebody´s house and they had Van Gogh's the Starry Night and when I see it instead of saying
"The Starry Night" I say "How much did you spend in that painting?" No, no, no, people. It lost its purpose.
It loses its purpose when you ask about the money and how many you have. If you ask me how many
figures I have, I don´t know, I don´t care, I have no idea. It´s nice that they have a value but if I am honest,
it´s more sentimental value.
It´s just that nostalgia determines the value.
Many people ask me why the collection of Masters of The Universe is reaching those prices nowadays.
I remember three four years ago you went to a flea market or to a little toy store and
for a He-Man in good shape they asked $25 usd. But now the prices have been raising,
maybe the triple. Why? Because of the nostalgia because people
that are my age, that are your age remembers those figures from their childhood
And they got money
So you start getting money, but not only you maybe other three people also
that want the exact same figure and that's what makes the price goes up.
People tell me "Hey, I want to start collecting, what you recommend me?" Go for the vintage.
And this is asked by 15, 16 year olds and I tell them to go for the vintage, and they enjoy it very much,
I told them the BS or HT figures It´s just a matter of having the money and buy stuff,
I mean, you can have the best collection HT collection but
tomorrow someone with money could buy the exact same figures that you have.
HT figures will have more value in 50 years.
But the cool thing about that collection is like when I talk with him is amazing because he really enjoy them.
He gets excited and show me their details, and the story behind the design, so I appreciate them too.
Many people ask me why I I hate them, no I don´t
You have different priorities.
Exactly, but if you ask me for my advice, just go for the vintage.
Yes, let me tell you something about Hot Toys.
If you want my advice
buy Hot Toys
because the production they are making is very little. Nowadays some of these figures are very scarce and valued.
Even you were telling me about David Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. They produced just a few.
You got to keep an eye on them because later on you won´t find them.
Those Star Wars toys, have the exact measures of the real actors,
C3PO is one centimeter and a half taller than Luke Skywalker and you are able to see it on the figure,
and in real life he is one centimeter and a half taller. I mean, they even take care of that
the perfect scale from the exact actor's measures. Hot Toys is another topic.
I could tell people that in my opinion HTs will be highly collectable in a short future.
They are producing only a few pieces and later on they are going to become really expensive collectables.
But it´s also good to see the stuff you are going to invest in, because now you tell them,
that you recommend them to invest in HT because they are producing very few pieces,
you know that you are not wasting money.
Yes of course
That´s good, I mean, don´t get confused and think it´s only luxury so I buy everything because I
liked it. I would tell you to invest in something that you believe it´s more exclusive, because in the
end, collecting is also that, having something that not everyone has and sharing it with other people.
That´s right!
What is your favorite toy line?
If I have to pick one I think I would go for what Kenner did during 1978 to 1985.
Forty years ago Kenner did an amazing job with the Star Wars packagings, it´s amazing.
The first twelve figures are amazing!
The art of the card is unbelievable, because remember that before that we had:
Six Million Dollar Man, the Elastic Man, Exin West and all the Marx Toys, from everything being precarious
It was quite precarious!
and suddenly Star Wars came with the Death Star, the Cantina, the Land Speeder, the TIE fighter
and the X wing that opened its wings with sounds and lights...
It was a revolution. Later on Kenner did Super Powers, then Kenner did
many things and for me Kenner became the hottest and most creative fabric that has ever existed
then Hasbro bought it, buried it, killed it and it ruined it. And Hasbro ended being other more.
But remember that Kenner had a time of amazing leadership.
Yes, and that was because of Star Wars, It's funny because none wanted the SW license.
And Kenner took the risk.
That´s right. Now it´s very sad to see that Hasbro disappeared the 3 3/4 figures.
I was very sad when Disney bought the license,
Very sad, very sad to see how they ruined the 3 3/4 collection.
Because it´s beautiful, you can even combine them.
Yes, they were made to be combine, but Disney ruined it. That was when the Lucas era ended!
Before Hot Toys and Sideshow came, there was a Japanese brand on the early 2000´s that was called Marmit.
they produced some of the best figures you can ever imagine and you are going to see it now.
This is the Sand Trooper made by Hot Toys.
See its face!
It´s smashed compared with the Marmit figures.
20 years ago Marmit made these figures and there hasn´t been a brand that overcomes
the detailing of these 20 year old figures.
The only thing I did was repaint them.
They were made 20 years ago?
Yes!
You see what I was talking about?
This figures are hard to find, if you see them on Ebay buy them!
You repainted them?
Yes, I retouched them so they look better.
His biggest passion today is modeling!
We are not going to talk details about it because there are special spaces for it.
Later we continue with that topic. This is a….
This is a Sideshow sculpture with a Marmit figure.
Look at the details!
These are basically figures made by Sideshow.
This is Medicom
Does this come with……
No, it´s a different set to put the Cantina characters, It lights up, the table and the bat have lights.
Indiana Jones, I see you have the 3¾ collection, did I saw the vintage collection around here,
or was it just my imagination?
The vintage is at the top
It´s at the top
But here we have some of the vintage sets with the 2008 to 2011 figures that Hasbro launched.
Look, those are test shots.
Great.
This really is Harrison Ford´s face
I am going to tell you something
It´s very well done
It´s very well done and let me tell you something. Look what the companies do with the painting.
Noooo!
This is what they do with all the paint on the figures. Do you see the difference when it´s already painted?
They put lots of disgusting paint from China.
Is it the same one?
It´s the same one, man. Look what they do to him. If you unpainted them all,
look how the sculpture would look like
this one it´s disgusting! lol
Beautiful collection, the 12" vintage figures.
I don't remember who got me the Tusken Raider, lol
Robert and I met in fact because I had 2 Tusken Raider, I upgraded mine,
So I had an extra one and a friend of his told me "You got to sell it to a friend of mine and you are going
to make him really happy" And I was like, ok, who is the person? And he told me; I am not going to
tell you much, Robert told me: "I want you to take it to my place and that day we negotiate".
I found it really odd because we could have negotiated there, but he insisted
and told me I needed to go so you can put it on its new place. And I think now it´s a really wanted piece.
Let me tell you something. I am really grateful with Rodri for giving it to me for an excellent price.
And also it was also that, I invite you to come over to my house, we have some wine, test me,
test me, get to know me, the things I talk about.
That´s how you are going to know where you are going to leave it.
Sports like!
Well, that´s the 12" collection and you contributed with the TR of course.
What I like is that they are ugly as hell, I mean,
Skywalker´s look is like He-Man´s but just with Skywalker´s clothes.
One of the rare ones is the Bounty Hunter at the back,
IG-88 is very rare. In fact those figures MIP are really expensive.
Here we have a beautiful collection, for the ones that love The Night before Christmas, Japanese toys made
on studio scale, made from cloth, it´s a beauty, we are talking about the ones from the Bride´s Corpse.
You can see there the Pumpkin King, then we have Dr. Finkelstein, Sally, Jack,
The mayor!
Jack on his pedestal,
That´s amazing!
It´s gorgeous!
What company made them?
"Jun Planning"
It's a Japanese company that makes porcelain dolls. They have the know how
What´s the value from one of those pieces?
Sally, the last time I saw was around 1k usd. The Oogie Boogie is the last one I got
Look at its size
Oogie Boogie was worth a couple of thousand dollars the last time I checked, another rare one is,
The bathtub with the children!
That's amazing!
That was the last piece I got from the collection.
But it´s really expensive?
It´s the rarest from all, that bathtub with the legs and the children inside. It was a myth whether it existed or not.
What year are this from?
1997
1997, from the 90's.
One friend tells to another one: "Look, Ramon,
Which of those 5 Apes from the 70's do you like the most?" And he answers "…….."
Forget the Apes look at that "monkeey" (bush).
Then I have the Hot Toys Terminator collection. What I like about this is that, as Rodri was saying, this
becomes a modern archeology, I like to see a young Arnold, how they recreated the
1985´Arnold, the Endoskeleton it´s a beauty its eyes light up. Terminator 2 is amazing, there´s Sarah Connor.
The T-1000 that´s from my favorite characters.
Sarah Connor is missing some detailing. Her face looks like Chuckie´s
It´s like Chuckie, but she is not like Scarlet Johansson.
The police man T-100 with the helmet and the glasses is amazing.
T-1000 Robert Patrick character is unbelievable!
That motorcycle was a special edition from Barbie's collection, Harley Davidson. lol
It fits perfect!
Yes, it's true!
The Mars Attack figures are amazing!
Yes, some of the best over here, Hot Toys super hard to get now.
They are quite expensive now but no doubt they are amazing!
HT Tron's motorcycle, that is a treasure, it´s an absolute beauty because it lights up, so.
Look at it!
And look at the sculpture is amazing!
Does the figure come off and everything?
No, this figure comes static.
Oh it comes attached.
Yes, it comes static. You can turn on the light of the helmet and you can turn on ….
the motor and the turbine
I think it´s like this.
I like how it looks at night!
I think the time has come for you to show us some vintage to entertain our public,
and what better than all the vintage collection min on card!
Ok, vintage collection MOC, this was the reason for all this place to exist. You are looking at the first
twelve at the top, on their first edition card almost mint condition, then you see the 21 backs,
Here the holy grail is,
Is the carded Boba Fett, with 21 figures on the back, that's a rare one.
The only better thing is to get in unpunched!
One of the hardest things, if you collect carded Star Wars figures….
The amount of figures that comes on the back is very important, here comes the secret.
Because you are talking about the period of the card, ok?
From the Yoda, Lando all these, up to the Han Solo from Hoth,
They are 10, if you could notice, those are the 31 backs. Those are the first figures that when
SW TESB came out in the 80´s were the first one that arrived at the Toy Stores. In fact, those
cards doesn't have Yoda on the back, it comes everyone except Yoda. Then the next ones came out,
they are called 41 backs, they go from the Imperial Commander Up to the Ugnaught those were the next 10 figures.
Then they ended up with their last wave, the last seven that are called the 47 backers.
All the way till the Cloud Car Pilot.
So the important thing about this collection is that most of them are in great shape
They are the first editions and most of them are unpunched.
Those are from the ROTJ, you know them very well, nothing new.
For the ROTJ, I feel like they produced much more figures, that's why they are more common but they are still difficult to find.
But Star Wars, the New Hope and Empire Strikes Back is really hard to get.
Yes, it's true!
And here in Mexico the most wanted are the Lili Ledy figures. I could bet that that Squid head
that you got there marked Kenner, on the back it may say "Made in Mexico".
Yes, but I am going to tell you what happened. There´s a difference. Basically, you can see here,
these are the last things that Kenner launched. The Power of the Force spaceships.
They are super expensive, impossible to find, and they were all made in México, but what´s the great difference?
That Kenner asked LL for a better quality.
Exactly!
That was my great deception!
I thought "ohh, you can do a great product, but you made them cheap for us!"
The A wing, that is one of the most expensive pieces from 1985 was painted super cool like the other American spaceships
It was made in Mexico so Lili Ledy had two quality standards and that is not funny.
And now I am going to show you the last 15 figures that came out.
They are known as the last seventeen, they are pretty wanted.
It´s weird that you tell me about the last seventeen, because that doesn't exist in my head,
because for me what Kenner did was re-packed 45 figures again but with a coin.
That series was called "Power of the Force", but they re-packed few figures from TESB and lots from the ROTJ figures.
So for me they were only 15 new figures!
Yes, plus Paploo and Lumat.
And many more, but anyways. For me this are the last ones, why?
Because they are the rare ones. It starts with Amanaman that it´s a beauty,
Also the EV-9D9 it's a great piece!
The pop-up Lightsaber R2 is a beauty!
Yes, Han in Carbonite is pretty cool, I am going to tell you something, I never liked the ewoks
"The little bears" lol
The little bears are ok but I think 6 were enough.
But the Imperial Dignitary is amazing!
You think children like that figure?
Bro, when it came out I was like, ufff... There are no Imperials you know,
It was something rare and I enjoyed so much putting it at the back of the emperor.
Gentleman, here we arrived to the best part, one of the most expensive figures and hardest to
find nowadays, I have been for years on Ebay and it doesn't exist, and the person that sold it to me
in the United States every year sends me an email asking me to sell it back.
That happens
The Anakin Skywalker for some reason was a very short production and there is no way to get it
carded and with a coin, there is no way. One of the most loved figures from this collection
That is beautiful
The Luke Stormtrooper it finally came out and it was a great success.
The Imperial Gunner is beautiful!
That wave is amazing!
They closed with a home run!
They left the best for the end, there´s even a prototype missing that is the Fat Dancer that was
supposed to come out at the same time. The fat dancer was just a prototype.
She is like the Rancor's Keeper wife! lol
That's true, a battle of titans! lol
Then we have the A Wing pilot a cool figure but after that,
the most expensive, rare and the most bizarre from all,
the famous Jack Face
The famous Jack Face, mint on card with the coin.
If you look closely JF have a different card,
That figure only came out in Canada. So that makes it rare.
Also in Europe that comes with the Tri-Logo card, that package is more common.
Yes they are more common
That figure draws my attention because they chose a character that only appeared in the movie for few seconds.
Squares, squares... 44 squares time.
Tell me more about this diecast collection!
This was the first SW toy as a kid!
My mom went to Houston on 1978 and got me the landspeeder.
This is the first diecast landspeeder made in 1978.
"Diecast" is the alloy used to produce Hot Wheels cars.
Exactly
It´s metal!
They made the X Wing, the Landspeeder, the TIE, I liked it very much because it had the exact
proportions from the movie. The toy came with the wings really short. It was ugly.
Vader's TIE, the Snowspeeder,
the famous Slave 1, that is really a rare piece, in fact this is a re-seal.
Most of them are in great shape!
And this one that is also hard to get that is the Cloud Car, the card is not so good because they are
very hard to get, look here they are, this is the vintage diecast collection.
Here's the loose Milenium Falcon I don't have it in box.
Here's the Imperial Cruiser is ugly as a kick on the brain, but it's what it is.
And the one you got in your hands is the hardest.
That one is very very rare! The TIE Bomber from 1982 is a sacred piece, expensive, and impossible to find.
This is the Y Wing vintage, it would come on this box.
It´s good that we are talking about these spaceships because it´s a great intro to move on to
the next thing. You don't know what is coming next.
Here comes the best part
Hardcore
This is maybe the less popular SW collection here, because this never arrived to Mexico.
It's awesome, It´s called Micro Collection, it's a mini toy line with metal/lead figures.
¿lead?
Exactly, here you can see it. This is the complete Bespin set, figures are made of lead.
They are really cool. What year are this from?
This ones from 1982
Of 1982, excellent.
And up to here it´s been a pleasure to share all the vintage collection, vintage toys, Hot Toys and all that.
But now we are going to move on to another part, the most important thing about my collection,
I've spent a lot of years doing it, with the help of really important people, people that has won the Oscar,
like Phil Tippett, with foreign modellers, with the best modellers in the US,
The Studio Scales, all the replicas of the filming models, I took many years to do them and they are in this room.
I got the goosebumps. Follow us!
Here comes the best part
Let´s go, let´s go. Look at this!
