How to win individual medley races. Why swimmers slow down and how take advantage of it - Duration: 3:51.

Swimming the individual medley is not easy.

you must be good at all the four strokes or at least not have a very weak stroke.

But you can always tell when someone slows down in their weakest stroke, usually breaststroke.

To get good at your weakest stroke requieres a lot of time and practice but there is one

thing you can get better at more quickly, transitions.

Transitions in the individual medley are a weakness that many people have that normally

we don't think on improving, but you can drop a couple of seconds if you get them right.

Usually, and this goes for normal flip turns too, beginners slow down in the turn.

In fact they slow down before the turn.

I suggest you speed up before entering a transition or a flip turn.

To practice this is not enough to just start from behind the flags and swim to a fast turn,

you must practice this every time you swim. because one of the reasons we slow down is

fatigue and during a race you will be fatigued and won't have time to think of any of this.

We unconsciously think, there is a wall so I will get a mini rest for my arms and legs

while I glide and push off the wall.

So to get good at speeding up in the flip turns, you need to repeat to yourself "good,

there is a wall, I'll speed up and gain some advantage on my competitors" Then use

that last two strokes to get yourself close to the wall fast and use your core to bring

your legs to the wall and push off as hard as you can to then do some dolphin kicks or

breaststroke pullout and do a few quick effective strokes.

We have talked about all these transitions, so I'll put a playlist at the end where

you can learn each transition, specially in backstroke to breaststroke crossover turn, which is the most

challenging.

But now let's see some racing strategies that I suggest for each type of swimmer.

If you are a butterflier you need to go out in front, so push yourself a little more than

your competitors.

Just enough to get ahead.

Put in a lot of effort in your weakest stroke, which is usually breaststroke or backstroke

and give everything you have left on the freestyle part.

If you are a backstroker use the easy speed of the dive to get you to a comfortable but

fast butterfly.

Don't get too far behind the butterfliers.

Then push yourself on the backstroke and get ahead of them.

I know your weakest stroke is breaststroke so don't let them catch you before the freestyle.

If you are a breaststroker you have a secret weapon.

Try to stay close to everyone on the first half of the race and then blow past them in

breaststroke and they won't have enough energy to catch you on the freestyle.

If you are a freestyler, do you even swim the individual medley?

I don't think so.

I'm kidding.

You are probably used to going out fast on the butterfly, but I suggest going easy on

the butterfly and try to stay with everyone on the backstroke and breaststroke to get

a chance to beat everyone on the freestyle.

Remember, do not slow down on the transitions.

Get to the wall quickly and use the momentum to get some advantage on your competitors.

You can rest on the wall when you are done.

How to win individual medley races. Why swimmers slow down and how take advantage of it - Duration: 3:51.

Swimming the individual medley is not easy.

you must be good at all the four strokes or at least not have a very weak stroke.

But you can always tell when someone slows down in their weakest stroke, usually breaststroke.

To get good at your weakest stroke requieres a lot of time and practice but there is one

thing you can get better at more quickly, transitions.

Transitions in the individual medley are a weakness that many people have that normally

we don't think on improving, but you can drop a couple of seconds if you get them right.

Usually, and this goes for normal flip turns too, beginners slow down in the turn.

In fact they slow down before the turn.

I suggest you speed up before entering a transition or a flip turn.

To practice this is not enough to just start from behind the flags and swim to a fast turn,

you must practice this every time you swim. because one of the reasons we slow down is

fatigue and during a race you will be fatigued and won't have time to think of any of this.

We unconsciously think, there is a wall so I will get a mini rest for my arms and legs

while I glide and push off the wall.

So to get good at speeding up in the flip turns, you need to repeat to yourself "good,

there is a wall, I'll speed up and gain some advantage on my competitors" Then use

that last two strokes to get yourself close to the wall fast and use your core to bring

your legs to the wall and push off as hard as you can to then do some dolphin kicks or

breaststroke pullout and do a few quick effective strokes.

We have talked about all these transitions, so I'll put a playlist at the end where

you can learn each transition, specially in backstroke to breaststroke crossover turn, which is the most

challenging.

But now let's see some racing strategies that I suggest for each type of swimmer.

If you are a butterflier you need to go out in front, so push yourself a little more than

your competitors.

Just enough to get ahead.

Put in a lot of effort in your weakest stroke, which is usually breaststroke or backstroke

and give everything you have left on the freestyle part.

If you are a backstroker use the easy speed of the dive to get you to a comfortable but

fast butterfly.

Don't get too far behind the butterfliers.

Then push yourself on the backstroke and get ahead of them.

I know your weakest stroke is breaststroke so don't let them catch you before the freestyle.

If you are a breaststroker you have a secret weapon.

Try to stay close to everyone on the first half of the race and then blow past them in

breaststroke and they won't have enough energy to catch you on the freestyle.

If you are a freestyler, do you even swim the individual medley?

I don't think so.

I'm kidding.

You are probably used to going out fast on the butterfly, but I suggest going easy on

the butterfly and try to stay with everyone on the backstroke and breaststroke to get

a chance to beat everyone on the freestyle.

Remember, do not slow down on the transitions.

Get to the wall quickly and use the momentum to get some advantage on your competitors.

You can rest on the wall when you are done.

One may wonder, how Udis managed to preserve their mother tongue in the modern world?

We, Udis, a small nation, lived and continue living in the Nij village of Gabala province in Azerbaijan

We managed to preserve our mother tongue by speaking the language at home.

We are taught in Russian and Azerbaijani at school, but it didn't satisfy us.

Therefore, we tried to input Udi Language classes at primary school.

At this moment, books for primary school classes are ready and classes are taught with the new alphabet.

True, we lost our ancient alphabet and we are not able to restore it yet.

Some scientists in the world continue working on this issue. It is a tough process, but time will come,

and when we will be able to decipher the alphabet, we will use it.

In the modern world we created an alphabet using Cyrillic and Latin graphics

and this is the alphabet, which we teach at schools.

Cross shows that Udis were Christians and today we continue being Christians.

From the 4th century the Albanian people officially adopted Christianity.

Until 836 AC people were going to churches

but after 836 with the decision of Russian Holy Sepulcher the Albanian church was suspended.

Quick Riff in Thumb Position - Duration: 5:16.

now in today's lesson we're going to be looking at this quick riff that you've

just heard and it's a really simple piece up in thumb position plays it back

down in half position and really it's just a nice way of you playing something

that's got a few chords in it to really make sure that your tuning is OK

you'll be able to hear any clashes as the notes ring next to each other it's

all pretty straightforward I'm going to talk you through it and give you a few

ideas of things to look out for on the way so let's get into the lesson

well it starts out using a chromatic hand shape in thumb position so this is

the same as in half position in terms of the access to the nose so you've got G

with your first finger a flat a B flat and you can use the D harmonic is a kind

of tuning anchor to see if you're playing playing in tune this is the

hand shape so we're staying in this chromatic hand shape starting on the

note G and it goes G-E-F, A Bb-E-D that's the first part let's have a

listen to that again G-E-F a hang on to the E to the D pulling off and

the next bit is a nice B flat major chord you've got a F and then b-flat in

the bass so B flat then this chord A-F-Bb and here we go

A, down onto the G-F-A harmonic. F again and then the D so that's the whole riff

pretty much repeating down in half position so it's the same notes

and this is a nice way of checking that you're actually in tune Lauren did a

lesson on this recently or you play something down in half position and then

in thumb position and see if it's on the same now the last time it goes, then up

to c-sharp and you should have C sharp G and then open A. C-F-C-B. Bb- E-Bb-A

okay let's just do that bit again just to finish off so what we've got here Ab

to the G, sliding down to the F with your thumb

and then basically playing the note D on the a string with D harmonic on the D

string there as well so it's a really kind of straightforward simple pattern

but it's quite good for the hand because when you're playing these cause when the

notes ring out you can hear if there's a mistake happening and what I recommend

is that you practice in front of the mirror and really keep an eye on the

hand shape otherwise there's pretty much nothing else to it apart from shifting

it's always good practice by the same thing in the two different registers and

if you go back and you're out of tune it's because the shift isn't might you

haven't landed properly on there the G harmonic so I would practice

and see if it stays exactly the same so this is a really quick short video today

something just to give you something to work on over the weekend maybe. Add in to

your practice routine if you're exploring this area in thumb position

We are an American family of 7 living, working and loving Brazil.

Welcome to the adventures of our Brazilian life. It's Maisa's birthday and we're on the

subway. We are headed to the mall for her birthday activity. We're gonna have some

How does it feel to be a 7 year old? I don't know.

Maisa is awesome because she works really hard in school. she's probably doing one of the best at

learning Portuguese. So she's killing it with Portuguese. She translates for me.

She understands tons of it and can speak back and that's amazing.

Maisa is creative, she's fun, she plays great with her sisters and she likes to

have a good time. So she's just a happy girl and she's great to have around.

She's a big helper. Alice, what do you love about Maisa? I love about she

paints my nails and she's nice to me and she plays with me.

Tiago, what do you love about your sister Maisa? I like playing in the swimming pool with her.
