Well good morning, my friends.
Welcome to Live Inspired with John O'Leary
I had the great fortune of traveling abroad with my family over the last 8 or so days,
which meant for a little bit more than a week, had limited access to my phone, to email,
to social media, to mainstream media.
We were in Spain and then Ireland, which meant for the first half of the trip, had no access
to even English-speaking television at all.
Which means, I was completely disconnected.
Which also meant that I was completely connected to the experience of being with family, in
a new place, in a new area, in a new culture, enjoying new experiences, new food, new joy
that had I been tethered down to my phone, or to the cable television, or toward email
or to a million other things, I would've missed.
I would've missed those four days in Barcelona.
I would've missed those four or five days traveling around in Ireland
If I had instead been glancing down at the things ultimately that don't matter.
And right now, I would imagine some of us are thinking, gosh, yeah, but you were out
of town.
You were abroad.
You were in Europe.
Yeah, but on Father's Day weekend, I thought of all the great experiences I had with my
dad as a little boy.
There's a lot, but most of them had to do not with trips to Europe (we never went),
not with the big vacations (we seldom went).
No, what I remember most about even the time that I had growing up with my dad were walks
around our neighborhood.
I remember also this little fishing trip we took.
We drove about 25 minutes, we fished all day, it gently rained, we came home 6 hours later
with nothing.
We didn't catch a thing!
But I remember distinctly holding a tackle box in my right hand and my dad's hand in
my left, walking back to our wooded station wagon.
I remember it well.
The simple things in life are also the profound.
It's the beautiful.
It's the stuff that if we're too busy, if we're too preoccupied looking around or looking
down, we're gonna miss.
So this week, my friends, I encourage you to simplify your life whether you have a new
passport and you are abroad and you are with family and friends.
Awesome!
Or if you're in your backyard, if the birds are flying around, if you're enjoying your
children, your family, your neighbors, your nature, your life.
Slow down!
Pause.
Savor the gift that is your life on this day, today!
