Toyota wins the 24 Hours of Le Mans after years of near misses - Duration: 4:00.

A race where the winner has no direct competition

ordinarily wouldn't be the most exciting prospect, but Toyota's win at the 2018 24

Hours of Le Mans was a tearjerker.

Only the second Japanese automaker to win Le Mans (after Mazda in 1991), Toyota was

the only entrant in the top LMP1 class in 2018.

But its victory this year makes up for a heartbreaking loss in 2016.

Two years ago, Toyota came excruciatingly close to winning the legendary 24-hour race,

only for its lead car to break down with minutes to spare.

The loss was so shocking that winner Porsche took out magazine ads thanking Toyota for

a great fight.

Toyota has entered Le Mans off and on since 1992, but hasn't been able to do better

than second place until this year.

But if Toyota could keep its cars running for 24 hours, a victory was more or less assured

this time around.

Rivals Porsche and Audi no longer race in the top LMP1 class, leaving Toyota's TS050

Hybrid race cars without direct competition.

While a car from the lower LMP2 came close to winning last year after the faster LMP1s

developed mechanical problems, 2018 was Toyota's golden opportunity to make up for 2016.

With no direct outside competition, the two Toyota hybrids raced each other.

Victory went to the number 8 car of Sébastian Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima, and two-time Formula

One champion Fernando Alonso (due to the length of the race, drivers take the wheel in shifts).

Still racing on the F1 circuit with McLaren, Alonso moonlighted at Le Mans as part of his

quest to win racing's "Triple Crown" — the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500,

and Le Mans.

Having already won at Monaco, the Le Mans victory leaves Alonso one race away from his

goal.

Alonso's extracurricular activities have been a public relations masterstroke.

Uncompetitive cars have left the Spaniard winless in F1 for several years, but Alonso

attracts a crowd whenever he races outside of the series.

He received an outsize share of attention at Le Mans, just as he did at the 2017 Indy

500 (where he failed to finish due to engine trouble) and the 2018 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

While it was likely that one of the Toyotas would win, it wasn't clear which one it

would be.

The number 7 car of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and José María López led for much of the

race.

Two penalties slowed down the number 8 car.

But Alonso closed the gap during a nighttime stint, and the number 7 car later encountered

fuel issues, putting it in second place.

The number 3 Rebellion Racing R-13 of Gustavo Menezes, Thomas Laurent, and Mathias Beche

finished third overall, and first among the LMP2 cars.

Le Mans also features two classes for race cars based on production models, and Porsche

won both of them this year.

The factory-fielded number 92 911 RSR, driven by Kevin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor, and Michael

Christensen, took the GTE-Pro class crown.

The number 77 911, fielded by private team Dempsey-Proton Racing, won in GTE-Am, driven

by Matt Campbell, Christian Ried, and Julien Andlauer.

Toyota wins the 24 Hours of Le Mans after years of near misses - Duration: 4:00.

A race where the winner has no direct competition

ordinarily wouldn't be the most exciting prospect, but Toyota's win at the 2018 24

Hours of Le Mans was a tearjerker.

Only the second Japanese automaker to win Le Mans (after Mazda in 1991), Toyota was

the only entrant in the top LMP1 class in 2018.

But its victory this year makes up for a heartbreaking loss in 2016.

Two years ago, Toyota came excruciatingly close to winning the legendary 24-hour race,

only for its lead car to break down with minutes to spare.

The loss was so shocking that winner Porsche took out magazine ads thanking Toyota for

a great fight.

Toyota has entered Le Mans off and on since 1992, but hasn't been able to do better

than second place until this year.

But if Toyota could keep its cars running for 24 hours, a victory was more or less assured

this time around.

Rivals Porsche and Audi no longer race in the top LMP1 class, leaving Toyota's TS050

Hybrid race cars without direct competition.

While a car from the lower LMP2 came close to winning last year after the faster LMP1s

developed mechanical problems, 2018 was Toyota's golden opportunity to make up for 2016.

With no direct outside competition, the two Toyota hybrids raced each other.

Victory went to the number 8 car of Sébastian Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima, and two-time Formula

One champion Fernando Alonso (due to the length of the race, drivers take the wheel in shifts).

Still racing on the F1 circuit with McLaren, Alonso moonlighted at Le Mans as part of his

quest to win racing's "Triple Crown" — the Monaco Grand Prix, Indianapolis 500,

and Le Mans.

Having already won at Monaco, the Le Mans victory leaves Alonso one race away from his

goal.

Alonso's extracurricular activities have been a public relations masterstroke.

Uncompetitive cars have left the Spaniard winless in F1 for several years, but Alonso

attracts a crowd whenever he races outside of the series.

He received an outsize share of attention at Le Mans, just as he did at the 2017 Indy

500 (where he failed to finish due to engine trouble) and the 2018 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

While it was likely that one of the Toyotas would win, it wasn't clear which one it

would be.

The number 7 car of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and José María López led for much of the

race.

Two penalties slowed down the number 8 car.

But Alonso closed the gap during a nighttime stint, and the number 7 car later encountered

fuel issues, putting it in second place.

The number 3 Rebellion Racing R-13 of Gustavo Menezes, Thomas Laurent, and Mathias Beche

finished third overall, and first among the LMP2 cars.

Le Mans also features two classes for race cars based on production models, and Porsche

won both of them this year.

The factory-fielded number 92 911 RSR, driven by Kevin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor, and Michael

Christensen, took the GTE-Pro class crown.

The number 77 911, fielded by private team Dempsey-Proton Racing, won in GTE-Am, driven

by Matt Campbell, Christian Ried, and Julien Andlauer.

Today I'm going to answer the question

"How did Manga Senpai became a manga artist?"

So I was remembering my young age.

And I'm like having sentimental feeling a bit now.

I have a sentimental heart now.

But I can't keep on saying that!

Since our audience gave me a question...

I'll answer it steadily.

I rouse myself now...

So here's the question from Kai-san from Australia!

"How did Manga Senpai become a mangaka? "

So I'm going to remember my tough days...

I mean my good days, and I'm going to tell you that.

So this is a special episode of Manga Senpai series.

Are you ready? Can you follow me?

I am the one of who became manga-ka

My way to become a manga-ka is

in a traditional, old way to be a manga-ka.

I'm in the last century...

In the last generation.

of who became a manga-ka in the traditional way.

I mean,

Nowadays,

there are many ways to become a manga-ka.

But in old time,

Make manga with manga magazine editors

And publish it on manga magazine

was the main way to become a manga artist and

that was the only way to show your manga to readers.

So I was doing that. Work with my editor and draw manga.

First,

I was in an art school.

Art college. In Japan, Kanto prefecture,

There are famous 5 art universities.

So I was going there,

But I quit it in 2 years.

I retired in 2 years.

Retired? Graduated?

No I didn't graduate.

Some people might think

you need to go an art school to become a manga-ka.

But I definitely deny that.

I was in the art college,

but I'd almost never draw a picture.

I was in design course so I haven't had to draw.

So don't worry about that.

Then, when the graduation become near,

I was wondering what I do after graduate.

And I decided to be a manga-ka and not to go to usual company.

I believed that I can do the manga-ka job if I have a pen and ink.

I prepared for it a year or so.

And that is when I started to draw manga.

When I was 22 years old.

So it was quite late. I made some efforts,

for a year, and I visited the editorial department of "Weekly Shonen Sunday".

of the publishing company Shogakukan.

That's how I started my carrier as a manga-ka.

There're mainly 2 ways to become a manga-ka.

Visit a manga magazine editorial department or Apply for a manga award.

There're many manga award for newbies in Japan

organized by each manga magazines or manga publishing companies.

Apply these or just visit manga editors and ask them directly.

And I was the one of who visited editors.

Many Japanese manga artists don't know

which way to choose.

Both ways have some advantages.

By visiting editors, you can have their advise directly.

But whether it succeed or not is depends on your luck.

You know what I mean?

You call the editorial department to have an appointment

by phone.

And the one who took the phone might be your PIC in the magazine.

So your success depends on the PIC like your work or not.

That's the only chance you can take.

The chemistry between you and your editor decides your work goes well or not.

It is just a luck. So scared.

Unfortunately some might take a PIC with bad chemistry

Some has good chemistry.

Applying to a manga award,

you can apply to many different awards.

And many editors read your manga.

Basically who take you in charge is who liked your work.

So once you get an editor, there's more possibility that you and your PIC have good chemistry.

This is a general idea. HOWEVER

That's the difficult part.

To won a manga award

if you already have a PIC by visiting editors,

Maybe I shouldn't say it so loud.

But this is the well-known fact so I say.

if you already have a PIC or pre-PIC by visiting editors,

and you apply to a award through the PIC,

your work will have a recommendation from your PIC.

And you'll have an advantage to won the award.

So to won the awards, visiting editors is a possible strategy.

And this is the one of advantages to visit editorial departments.

In Japanese manga industry,

To get a PIC in an manga magazine,

is the very first step to be a professional manga artist.

That is the custom of Japanese manga industry.

That's why getting a business card from an editor

is a good thing for Japanese manga artists.

Yeah yeah yeah...

Yeah, something like that.

Anyway, I started my carrier by visiting editors.

To won the manga award,

I'd drawn 1 manga story every week.

Drawing Name every week.

And I had faxed those to the editor.

Fax. Do you know that old tool?

I had been showing my Name to editors every week.

And my stories had been rejected.

The most awful thing for Japanese manga artist. BOTSU in Japanese.

Every manga-ka gets afraid of that.

In case, there's ZEN-BOTSU.

Means ALL REJECTION. It gives serious damage to manga artists.

No correction allowed and you must start new project from zero.

Perhaps, in this big Japan manga industry,

I am...

THE ALL REJECTION SPECIALIST.

I had served quite long apprenticeship,

for almost 7 years to become a manga-ka.

The editor accepted only 2 short stories in 7 years.

But I had made 1 story per a week and had meeting with my editor.

I'd drawn 100 pages per a month.

So 12 months times 7 years.

Almost 9000 pages.

Actually I can publish "Weekly Manga Senpai".

"Weekly Magazine Goto".

But for this 7 years I got a method to make a manga story,

and many tips to make manga,

And now I'm offering you that.

This reminds me of young days...

10 years before, the power of manga editors is very strong compared with today.

My memory came back...

At 2:00 AM, my editor called me

and yelled at me.

Why he yelled is

In such a midnight there are no other people in the editorial department.

So he can yell.

So I was like when my phone rang in late night, "Oh, now I'm going to be yelled".

This is not what Manga Senpai should tell.

Something like that.

Anyway, because of the days,

the good part is,

I had communicated with the editor really severely in the days,

I leant a lot.

I could made thousands tries to make the editor to say "yes".

Many many thousands tries.

And I finally got job of a serialized comic, that's good.

I was in a period of transition

to Web from paper magazines.

And fortunately I got a job on a Web magazine.

Yeah I started my comic on Web

And thanks to my readers,

I've got some popularity and I was transferred to a paper magazine.

Not in nowadays, but 10 years before,

Paper magazines are much stronger than Web magazines.

Do you know Japanese expression "SHIMANAGASHI", means "be exiled to an island"?

We had called the transfer to web as exile to a WEB.

Like a series on paper magazine lost popularity ends and says "to be continued on the WEB".

But the situation changed and WEB magazine get much more popular.

It became more major media to read manga,

The good era came I think.

Since I became a manga-ka in the traditional way,

and I leant a lot of thing of manga from the days,

so I'll answer you if you'd like to know about the traditional days.

That's what I want to say.

However there are many way to become a manga-ka these days,

So I want you to take a chance and

become a manga-ka.

I made effort for 7 years and finally,

I BECOME A MANGA-KA!

You can be a manga-ka more than you expect.

Really. Unless you keep an effort.

KEIZOKU HA CHIAKRA NARI. (It means "perseverance makes your strength".)

This is a Japanese proverb.

Like "3 years on the stone"... (This is also a Japanese proverb means "perseverance and patience makes good results")

Toyota wins the 24 Hours of Le Mans after years of near misses - Duration: 4:00.

A race where the winner has no direct competition

ordinarily wouldn't be the most exciting prospect, but Toyota's win at the 2018 24

Hours of Le Mans was a tearjerker.

Only the second Japanese automaker to win Le Mans (after Mazda in 1991), Toyota was

the only entrant in the top LMP1 class in 2018.

But its victory this year makes up for a heartbreaking loss in 2016.

Two years ago, Toyota came excruciatingly close to winning the legendary 24-hour race,

only for its lead car to break down with minutes to spare.

He received an outsize share of attention at Le Mans, just as he did at the 2017 Indy

500 (where he failed to finish due to engine trouble) and the 2018 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

While it was likely that one of the Toyotas would win, it wasn't clear which one it

would be.

The number 7 car of Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi, and José María López led for much of the

race.

Two penalties slowed down the number 8 car.

But Alonso closed the gap during a nighttime stint, and the number 7 car later encountered

fuel issues, putting it in second place.

The number 3 Rebellion Racing R-13 of Gustavo Menezes, Thomas Laurent, and Mathias Beche

finished third overall, and first among the LMP2 cars.

Le Mans also features two classes for race cars based on production models, and Porsche

won both of them this year.

The factory-fielded number 92 911 RSR, driven by Kevin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor, and Michael

Christensen, took the GTE-Pro class crown.

The number 77 911, fielded by private team Dempsey-Proton Racing, won in GTE-Am, driven

by Matt Campbell, Christian Ried, and Julien Andlauer.
