Welcome to Mastro Livi's School!
We're inside my private barbershop.
In this episode we will talk about my Damasteel barber scissors,
my razor scissors, made by myself,
and those scissors cut on both blades thanks to my micro-edge technique.
Here you can see some of my Mastro Livi's micro-edge scissors.
We can see three classic scissors, and two thinning scissors.
Those are the last scissors that I've made, with Damasteel stainless steel.
Those scissors are made of RWL34 steel, always micro-edge,
for a classic hair cut.
Here we can see another stainless steel one,
just like the steel used for Grifetto, always with micro-edge technique,
classic model.
Here we can see the thinning scissors, with a blade
in micro-edge and the other blade with small teeth, and in particular this one
is hand forged, in fact you can see the hits of the hammer on the handles
and on the eyelets of the scissors.
Here you can see again a pair of thinning scissors with a micro-edge blade,
and the other with small teeth.
The blades are smooth and mirror polished.
We're back to the Damasteel scissors,
made of stainless damascus steel, and I'm now going to disassemble them turning the small wheel.
Here it is.
We have to pay attention when disassembling the scissors
and do it on a plain surface, better with a white towel
or something that helps us find all those small pieces.
And we can now see two blades: the longest one is for the annular, and the little finger goes on the finger rest.
The blades of my micro-edge scissors haven't got a section on the edge,
but they're just like a straight razor, the edge is the same.
And we can clearly see it here in the shiny part.
And also in the other blade.
To clean the scissors we don't have to disassemble them every time,
we can just do like this under the hot water.
Like that.
I'll assemble again the small wheel just to let you understand better.
Here it is.
You just do like that under the faucet with hot water,
and automatically the scissors will be cleaned from dust, hairs and so on.
If you want to complete the cleaning of the scissors,
you can dry them with the hair dryer and put a drop of mineral oil on the pivot.
This is all you need to know regarding cleaning and maintenance of the scissors,
without the need of disassembling them every time, risking to lose some pieces.
My way of hand sharpening the scissors have never been explained before,
and to do so you will need my loom strop, and this technique
will help a lot the edge of the scissor, but it's not intended for all the scissors!
This technique is only for micro-edge scissors, for example my scissors.
Not all the scissors are suitable to be sharpened with the loom strop.
Now I want to show you something
that might be really dangerous on every kind of scissors.
During my work, in many years of experience, I've met many customers
pretending to be able to sharpen the scissors using that stone,
an abrasive stone, and they're using it on the scissors
like they would use it on a knife: on one side and then on the other side.
But this is not the proper manner for sharpening the scissors!
Now I want the barbers, in particular, to pay extra attention to this step,
because I'm going to explain how to sharpen the barber scissors.
Here they are.
When you use the scissors, doing this movement,
especially the barber doing it very quickly, you're working with a knife grinder!
Yes, it seems a joke but it's true, there's really a knife grinder, even if you can't see him!
This knife grinder is working between the two blades when they pass on each other.
And in which part of the blades can we see this happen?
Here, on the plain side: that blade here, on this side, not here,
and also on the other blade.
So if I want to use the scissors on the loom strop with both blades, one at a time,
I'm doing that movement, but be careful, not like this, perpendicular to the loom strop
putting the scissors like this: this is really dangerous for both the edge and the loom strop!
We have to apply a grade of about 10%, between 5% and 10%, like this.
And we pass the blade in that way, until we exit the loom strop
with the point of the blade: like this, also faster if you want. Like this.
When you'll be done with one blade,
you will see that the green paste will become darker, because my paste
works like that, it consumes the steel.
Here it is, the black is the steel removed with the loom strop.
Like this.
When you're done with one blade, you do that movement:
you take the other blade and you close the scissors.
You will feel something cutting, that's the dead steel
removed with the loom strop,
and the other blade is cutting it.
And we now start with the other blade: same movement,
not perpendicular but with a small grade, and we go
outside of the loom strop with the point.
Be careful to not do like a straight razor
going back with the other side, because that way you will damage the edge
of the scissors!
Like that, only that side.
Same movement, like that, and we clean the edge.
Let's now verify if we've done a correct job with the loom strop.
On the edge of both blades, if we pass them on our fingers,
we have to feel a smooth edge, without dead steel,
and if the loom strop
have removed the steel properly the scissors must cut perfectly.
And now we are going to try them.
Here it is.
Like that!
I want to thank you all for your attention
during this lesson regarding my micro-edge barber scissors and how to sharpen them,
my razor scissors made with micro-edge technique.
Thanks again,
and see you in the next episode in which I will talk about ordinary and extraordinary sharpening
of the straight razor!
