This Unorthodox Procedure Makes Short People A Foot Taller - Duration: 3:10.

IF ONLY THERE WAS ANOTHER WAY!

Whattup shorties, short Jules here for a DNews short.

I am five-foot-eight, which is below the average height for an adult American male, roughly

five-foot-nine-and-a-half.

For our entire lives, we've been told that there is nothing we can really do about being

short.

For most everything else, there is plastic surgery, or medication, or some other solution,

while us shorties are stuck with shoe lifts and pinstripes.

But what if I told you vertically challenged friends that there is a way to grow taller,

even as a fully grown adult.

The only catch?

Well, you have to break your legs.

A medical procedure, called "distraction osteogenesis", can actually lengthen your

bones by a few inches, and was originally developed to treat those with uneven leg lengths,

or dwarfism.

This is essentially done by breaking the bone, then separating or stretching it for the bone

to heal in a longer position.

Today it is mostly used to treat disorders of the face, where the jaw or chin or skull

may not be the right size, or growing in the right direction.

But in China, this surgery saw popularity around the early 2000s, and is still being

done around the world as a cure for, well, shortness.

There are three stages to the heightening procedure.

The first is called the "latency phase".

The legbone, usually the tibia, is either fully separated, or just cut into what is

essentially a fracture.

The second, 'distraction phase' introduces a separating device, often a Ilizarov apparatus.

This surrounds the leg and bolts into the bone, allowing not only stabilization, but

separation.

Each day, the device separates the two parts of the tibia by about one millimeter.

While the device separates the bone, a callus forms at the site of the break.

As the bone is spread farther and farther apart, the callus is resorbed and replaced

by a collagen structure.

Collagen is a protein that forms the connective tissues in our bodies.

New blood vessels grow around this collagen and special cells called osteoblasts move

in to create the actual bone material.

At this stage though, the bone material has not mineralized, or become fully hard.

Once the desired length is reached, which often tops out at just a few inches, the final

phase begins: consolidation.

In this phase, the bone material mineralizes -- and this takes about a month for each centimeter

in length!.

The now slightly taller patient just has to undergo several months of physical therapy

to learn how to walk again.

As you might imagine, the whole process is very painful.

And, according to a study published in 2014 by the European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery

and Traumatology, 77% of patients experience complications, and 70% of those complications

were major, including axis deviation, or leg alignment, hardening of joints, and psychological

problems.

The Hospital for Special Surgery in the US claims to have added up to a full foot in

height to those with dwarfism, although most people are only able to achieve a height boost

of a few inches.

So, yes, you can get taller.

But in most cases, you might not want to.

So how much force does it take to break a bone anyway?

We answer that question in this video.

And if you have any other bone or body questions for us, let us know down below in the comments

and don't forget to subscribe for more DNews everyday.

6 Tips For Finding Your Perfect Pair of Jeans | Racked - Duration: 1:52.

You may have an idea of what your size is,

but keep a loose relationship with that.

All brands size their genes somewhat differently.

For the waistband,

the key is to think about

not only your comfort level,

but your body shape.

I look for jeans that have

a little bit more stretch in the waistband.

because that's

what I want to be the most comfortable.

Someone like Tiffany,

who is blessed with

a smaller waist and a perkier seat -

she might look for a pair of jeans

where the waistband is smaller

relative to the hip.

What stretch provides is a little bit

more ease of movement.

Even though vintage Levi's

might be non-stretch -

you don't have as much give -

they offer a lot more structure

and a lot more hold,

and

they're still really soft and comfortable.

Something to look for is this

upside-down heart-shape that's

created by the angle of the pockets.

That's going to give you an even perkier

seat and emphasize that

kind of, female form.

My personal preference is to wear things

that ankle length because I feel like

that gives me a wider variety of shoe

choices.

With Tiffany, we've rolled them a

little bit just above the ankle and we

just do a little bit of like a little

scrunch and roll - not trying to be too

perfect cause we want to make sure

that it looks really natural.

The key to caring for jeans is to

wash them as little as possible.

Just take a wet rag and put a

dry rag underneath, and you

just spot clean.

If you feel like you absolutely must

wash your jeans, hand wash them in the

sink in cold water and you turn them

inside out - that way it preserves the indigo.

Then we recommend that you line dry

for stretch jeans in particular

because it preserves the lycra.

The most important thing:

just make sure that you

feel amazing and that it's the ultimate

expression of who you are.

THIS IS "SPACE ADVENTURES®" THE WORLD'S FIRST PRIVATE SPACEFLIGHT COMPANY - Duration: 2:38.

after the first astronaut saw the earth

from space they came back with stories

of its beauty and fragility at space

adventures we turn these stories into

firsthand experiences for commercial

space pioneers since 2001 we have

organized eight space flights for

private astronauts now we are giving

more people the opportunity to achieve

their dreams of going to space than ever

before

by participating in a suborbital space

space adventures as a company has been

built by providing private citizens the

opportunity to fly in space until now

there have only been two ways for people

to experience space either by spending

tens of millions of dollars to visit the

international space station or a few

thousand dollars to experience

weightlessness on earth as we look

forward into the future of space

adventures

we're going to continue to develop our

existing experiences but will also add a

wonderful mid-priced option that people

will be able to purchase an experience

for the first time that's a suborbital

spaceflight participants will be able to

reach over a hundred kilometers

experience a few minutes of

weightlessness and marvel at the earth

below but most of all they will get

their astronaut wings by having actually

reached the border of space

I hit her about the only person around

it doesn't have TV coverage of the face

and then they got the black up now you

can do this by the TV picture is fail

yes we are going

baby pictures

that's one all

I fortunately stumbled across a documentary that helped me pick out my major - Duration: 0:57.

I graduated from high school and I had an aptitude and likening for math and

science. Problem-solving was what I enjoyed, and so I initially entered

Syracuse University as an engineering student. However, I didn't like the

monotony and it felt like I was solving the same problem over and over.

And then I saw a documentary, actually, in my Writing 101... Writing 101?

Writing 105? I guess it's irrelevant...called Objectified, and

Objectified is a documentary about industrial design. And as soon as I saw

that, I was like, "Oh, that's what I want to do," and it turned out that Syracuse

University had that program and it was one of the top programs in the nation,

so I just kind of weaseled my way into it. Begged a bunch of people,

and stuff like that.

Jim Gaffigan: Disagree with Someone? Calling Them a Moron Won't Help | Best of '16 - Duration: 5:41.

If you have a problem with the patriarchy or with white people you'd look at me and

you'd go this guy invented white people because he's so white.

He probably invented slavery.

He probably was resistant to women voting.

So the weird thing is I do feel like sometimes even people talking about Trump or some outlandish

conservative opinion will kind of present things to me that are like well, you know,

some people don't support gay marriage like you maybe.

And I'm like just because I look, you know, like a prototypical white guy villain who

wants to kick immigrants out I'm not.

I mean that's a form of bigotry.

Anyway, I'm a great guy.

I grew up in a small town in Indiana and I feel as though living in New York or in LA

or even Chicago there is this dismissiveness to people with different opinions where rather

than explaining our point of view we'd rather be right.

John Kerry was running for president versus Bush there was this – I feel like there

was this collective thing like anyone who votes for Bush is an idiot.

And I'm like that's not how you convince people to – that's not how you persuade

someone.

And I feel like being from a red state or from a flyover area that sometimes people

on the East Coast or in LA there is this dismissiveness of people that hold differing viewpoints.

Rather than having a discussion there's just kind of like well they're morons.

And the thing that worries me about people that are supportive of Trump or angry about

Trump there's this absence of dialogue.

Instead saying to someone that supports Trump like what is it?

What is it that you like?

There is this self-satisfaction of like you're an idiot.

And that's not how you convince someone.

And I think that there's also this kind of denial that I think we exist in when it

comes to Trump or people of radical opinions that we emotionally disagree with is that

there are moments when they talk.

Where we go, well that's a decent point.

But we never admit to that.

When Trump talks, when he gives speeches because everyone watching this has watched Trump.

I mean I stopped working to watch him because it's entertainment.

It's not as if he's not articulate at communicating an idea.

It's not that there aren't moments that we don't identify with some of his ideas.

Overall again emotionally we might disagree wholeheartedly but we might identify with

some of the fear.

We might identify with the sheer raw kind of like I don't want to lose.

I want greatness.

We all identify.

That's not that foreign.

It's not speaking a different language.

But I think there's also some geography that we forget that I think that sometimes

there is similar to how we get our news like there's people that watch Fox.

There's people that watch MSNBC.

I'm a news junkie and there was a time when I brought up yeah, Fox news and my friends

were like how dare you watch that.

And I'm like I would go to the Soviet Union when it still existed.

It doesn't mean I'm a Marxist, you know.

It doesn't mean I support communism.

I just think it's weird that I – maybe I personally – I like having friends that

like comedians that I perform with that open for me on the road.

I had a guy who was a libertarian and then the next guy who opened for me was an Occupy

Wall Street guy.

And all three of us are friends.

I kind of like people with different opinions.

And I'm not dismissive of – I mean I might casually say you're crazy but I mean I love

these people and I also learn from them.

So anyway, my point is I'm a great guy.

Tom Hamilton of Aerosmith on Quitting Drugs - Duration: 3:42.

There's a book, a history of Aerosmith, called "Walk this Way" and the author of the book

makes an argument about you that says that you were the band member that was most difficult

to convince to stop doing drugs.

The reason that the author gave was because you had never lost your house, never lost

your wife, in the way that some of the other band members did.

I was wondering if that's true and if you would elaborate on how you made that decision

at that time of your life.

Well you know I was never addicted to drugs, I just found them so damn fun!

We got to a point where we were losing tours and began having problems in the band because tours were going down because

people were too involved in getting high and when you combine that

with the pressure and stress of the band going like that, arguing all the time, and dealing with the personalities

and the fights and the arguments.

You know the band broke apart in 1979 and I remember thinking well big deal we'll just get

two more guitar players and let them in it'll be fine.

It wasn't until we got together and we did the Rock in a Hard place album and we went

out on tour and then that's when we realized that Aerosmith in its new form wasn't going

to go over with the fans.

Cause we would be in a situation like this and somebody would yell "hey where's Joe?"

and so the harder we tried the harder we realized the fans wanted the band back in the original

shape and they really let us know about it.

And we realized that's what we really wanted too.

It's the best thing we ever had and we fucked it up.

You know.

So we finally got to that point where the band got back together but we still had a

lot of dysfunctions and problems and issues and a lot of it was related to drugs.

At some point I became convinced, yeah, you can't expect a couple people, or

especially one particular person, to be completely sober if other band members are around the corner

smoking a joint or having a drink.

Up until then I had read out the Constitution on why I should be able to have a beer with dinner

I never fell offstage

I realized that it is true, if we want Aerosmith

we are gonna have to face it together, all together, and it does ... while it's going on but I'm really happy that it did.

Because it was very true and it was hard and the tours started coming back.

I think it's part of why we're still around is that we went through that.

VLOGMAS: Celebrating Christmas Eve in Denmark //圣诞节:在丹麦过平安夜 - Duration: 11:15.

Hi guys

Lingling is back

Merry Christmas! Today is December 24th

Yay, today we will celebrate Christmas Eve

I'm so excited

Because there are a lot of presents for Lingling here

And today the weather is also really nice. I'll show you

Have a look

When I was young, I went to school over there

A big school

According to Danish people, this is a big school. Around 1000 students

But there are only 500 people in this village

So the children from other villages came here to go to school

And my mother is already cooking

Tonight's dishes

And we will eat the roasted duck

And my sister is preparing the presents

I still haven't prepared my presents

I'm pretty lazy. Well, because I'm editing videos and such. Just doing other things

And watching TV shows. There are many good TV shows when it's Christmas

Very interesting

My mom and sister just prepared these apples

We are going to put some jelly on top

And then it's going to be really sweet

Lele is here too

My mom just prepared the rice porridge

It's like this. She prepares it first

and then she take the rice porridge and put it in her bed

And then today, at noon. Or like in two hours, it is done and ready to be eaten

Let's go in and have a look

It is here

So hot!

It is just, don't know what it is doing actually (Because I didn't know how to say it in Chinese)

Now I'm just here editing my videos

Yesterday's vlogmas

while I'm watching TV

The weather is so nice

There are more and more Christmas presents under the tree

We will only be four people tonight

But still quite a lot of presents

We just arrived at granny's house

Just arrived

We are going to have a chat with them

I haven't seen them for a really long time

So I'm looking forward to see them

And we are also going to eat some cookies

And wish them a merry Christmas

And give them their presents

Okay, now I'll go inside

So cute!

Christmas has arrived

These are called pepper nuts

Really tasty

Granny gave us more cookies

The more you eat the more fat you get!

We are now going to get onto the ferry

Why?

Because my grand father and grand mother are looking on the mainland

And my mother's parents are staying on a little island

We are also living on the island

But my parents live on the southern part of the island

And my mother's parents are living on the northern part

So we are going to take the ferry over to the other side

We are waiting in line

There are still people who want to take the ferry on Christmas Eve

I also want to show you guys this place

This is really countryside

But have a look here. Isn't it beautiful?

This is a small restaurant

If you are having a big party, you can celebrate it here

We are going to be on the ferry for 10 minutes

That's enough to reach the other side

Denmark is so little

We just take the ferry. We drive to the ferry, take it ten minutes and then arrive and drive to granny's house

We are going to drive to grand father's house to wish him Merry Christmas

And then we will go to my grand mother's place tomorrow to eat lunch with her

They're not living together because my grand father is too old so he stays in the nursing home

So we are going to the nursing home to talk to him and have a cup of coffee

And then we are going to my grand mother's place tomorrow and have lunch with her

The Danish sea

Crazy wind

So cold!

But yes, this is just the Danish sea

Crazy wind and icy cold

My family thinks I'm crazy because I'm talking to you guys

And because I use Chinese when talking

Every time I talk to you guys, they just don't want to be standing besides me

Because it makes them shy

OMG a six again!

It's incredible

Who came up with this silly idea (playing the game)

She shouldn't be allowed to have one next time (I did throw a lot of sixes XD)

The 24th

is already over

Thank you guys for watching my videos

See you tmr

The 3Dfx Voodoo Difference: This is why we love them - Duration: 9:40.

The game we are looking at here is Tomb Raider.

It is an action adventure video game developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive

in 1996.

The PC used in this video is from 1997 and this is what the game looks like in the standard

320 x 200 resolution.

We will look at the computer in a bit more detail later on.

The PC version of Tomb Raider supports a higher 640 x 480 resolution.

We can clearly see the PC struggling and the game is not smooth at all.

And this is 3Dfx Voodoo version.

It also runs at the 640 x 480 resolution, but with a locked 30 fps, texture filtering,

mipmapping and antialiasing.

Let's look at that again.

Here is the standard PC version.

And this is what the game looks like on the same PC, but with a 3Dfx Voodoo.

Let's put them side by side to really see the difference.

And that right there is the 3Dfx Voodoo difference.

Enjoy this video We will look at some more game comparisons

later on, and of course check out the Voodoo card, but now let's a have a look at the

system used in this video.

Over the last few weeks I reviewed a range of popular Socket 7 processors.

It all started with a DOS gaming PC build that the viewers could vote on, choosing the

processor, graphics card and MIDI device.

The motherboard is an Asus SP97-XV with a chipset from SIS.

We are using 32 MB of SDRAM, a Tseng ET6000 PCI graphics card and for sound we got an

ESS AudioDrive.

To really show the 3Dfx Voodoo difference, we are using the Cyrix 6x86 200 again, this

was the slowest processor that we looked at and is great for demonstrating what an upgrade

you're going to get with a Voodoo card.

Here we are looking at Descent II running on the Cyrix 6x86 200.

Is a 1996 first-person shooter video game developed by Parallax Software and published

by Interplay Productions.

It is the second game in the Descent video game series and unlike standard first-person

shooters, the player must control a flying ship that has a six degrees of freedom movement

scheme, allowing the player to move in any 3D direction.

The game is kind of playable, but far from optimal.

Once again the 640 x 480 resolution is just a little bit too demanding for this machine.

The game actually has a built-in frame counter and we are getting just over 20 fps.

And this is the 3dfx Voodoo version on the same machine.

Look at the difference.

On the Voodoo the game is locked at a constant 60 fps most of the time.

There are some occasional dips in framerate when the scene is busy, but most of the time

we are getting silky smooth 60 fps.

And of course we get texture filtering, resulting in a less blocky image.

Let's compare them side by side and we can clearly see just what a difference the 3dfx

Voodoo makes The 3Dfx Voodoo launched in November of 1996.

It is a PCI 3D only graphics card, that required a pass-through cable from a separate 2D card,

in our case we paired it up with the Tseng ET6000.

A large number of companies produces the 3DFx Voodoo, however the Orchid Righteous

3D as well as the Diamond Multimedia Monster 3D can be considered as the most popular models.

The card I'm using is a Diamond Monster 3D.

Although we are only looking at DOS games in this video, there are a vast range of 3D

accelerated Windows games that run perfectly on the 3DFx Voodoo.

The card doesn't need any drivers, however you can control certain aspect of it through

simple environment variables.

Here is an example of a batch file I like to use, which lowers the gamma a little bit,

as the default setting is extremely bright, sets the refresh rate to 60 Hz and also enables

v-sync.

I've done a video previously showing the different gamma settings and I've also uploaded

drivers and other resources onto my website, I'll put the links down below in the description.

Depending on your region, prices for a 3Dfx Voodoo can vary greatly.

At the moment the cheapest Voodoo available to us Aussies goes for 60 Australian dollars.

So do check in your area, chances are you get a much better deal, but you got to realise

that anything from 3Dfx is highly saught after and prices can get a bit silly.

DOS games would receive patches, usually a new executable, that you just copy into the

game folder to launch the improved 3Dfx version.

Game support for Voodoo cards has always been excellent, everyone made sure that their games

would run well on cards from 3Dfx because of their popularity with gamers. The next game

we're looking is Screamer 2, or in other regions knows as Bleifuss Zwei.

It is the follow-up to Screamer, an arcade-style racing game.

Offering more of rally-oriented gameplay it comes with four customisable cars, high resolution

graphics, tracks from regions such as the US, England, Switzerland, Egypt and others.

It also has some really catchy CD audio tracks and a built-in CD player that lets you change

tracks during gameplay.

Screamer 2 is an extremely demanding DOS games when run at 640 x 480 resolution.

It also uses also uses 16 bit colours which certainly doesn't make it any easier.

Our machine is clearly not fast enough to run this game at a decent frame rate.

And this is the 3Dfx Voodoo version.

There is just no comparison, it's like a completely different game.

While we don't have a frame counter, it does feel like locked 60 fps with the occasional

dips below that.

We also get some nice texture filtering and overall the image looks more pleasant to the

eye.

Here we have the two versions side by side.

If you ever wanted to know what the 3Dfx Voodoo difference is, just look at this example.

If you had a 3Dfx Voodoo back in the day, you know exactly why we love them so much.

These cards changed gaming, many established graphics cards companies got caught with their

pants down and it forced everyone in the industry to either adapt or perish.

Share your 3Dfx Voodoo memories down below.

What was that game that made you go out and buy one.

For me it was Tomb Raider.

When I saw the graphics the 3Dfx Voodoo card pulled out, I knew that PC 3D gaming was about

to make a huge leap forward.

And that's it guys.

Thank you so for much for watching!

"2016 Going On 2017" - Duration: 1:46.

Well, you've been so bitchy!

I'm 2016.

What's such a bitch about that?

(singing) You wait little year,

on a tense tight stage,

for fate to turn the tide on.

*ding!*

Your life little year,

has been filled with haze,

and a year I'd like to crap on.

(sung sweetly) To crap on...

You're 2016,

going on 2017.

Baby. You sure did stink.

CIA emails, Trump hating females.

Hindsight in 2020.

(musical interlude)

I'm 2016, going on 2017,

thorny as a rose.

Brexit and Bowie's,

loved that I showed ye's,

how awful a year can go.

Totally unprepared were you

to face a world of woes.

Brassy and loud, with an Eeyore cloud

of homophobic, racist blows.

I need some year

better and kinder,

with less of an attitude.

You are 2017, going on 2018.

What have we got to lose?
