Indian government must soon choose between F-16 Fighting Falcon, Gripen-E for its single-engine

combat aircraft replacement program.Reuters.

As India looks to replace its ageing Soviet-era lightweight combat aircraft fleet, two players

have emerged as possible contenders, American defence major Lockheed Martin's F-16 Fighting

Falcon Block 70 and Swedish defence major Saab's Gripen E fighter aircraft.

C-17 Globemaster: Modi govt clears four key proposals to buy aircraft, low-level lightweight

radars and more Indian Air Force (IAF) has requirement of

over 400 fighter aircraft, which is far higher than the 126 aircraft that were supposed to

be made by the now junked Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) competition, IANS

reported.

The days where India imported fighter jets is over, and the IAF has already issued a

global request to make single-engine combat jets under the Narendra Modi government's

ambitious 'Make in India' programme.

Apart from the IAF, the Indian Navy too is looking for shipboard fighters.

It is looking at 60 twin-engine shipboard fighter jets and wants the deliveries to start

within five years.

India is expected to roll out its first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC 1) or INS Vikrant in

2018.

IAF is now weighing the options with the possibility of Boeing F/A 18 Super Hornet and Dassault's

Rafale entering the race.

Boeing has reportedly met with top defence ministry officials and has offered to set

up new world class production facility in India to make F/A 18 Super Hornet.

Dassualt will also be proposing the naval version of Rafale for Indian Navy's carrier-based

operations

In April 2015, India had decided to scrap the MMRCA tender and buy 36 Rafale fighter

aircraft in a government to government deal.

In September 2016, India inked a deal for off-the-shelf Rafales for multi-billion dollars.

The package will also include certain country-specific modifications, missiles and full cycle costs.

Both Lockheed Martin and Saab have offered to partner with India under its Make in India

and set up production lines in the country.

"The F-16 is by far the easiest fighter amongst its rivals...The new fighters, like Gripen,

have a lot of composite materials, and lack a lot of generational changes and modifications

over its lifetime," Wendell Minnick, Senior Asia Correspondent of Shepard Media, told

International Business Times, India, in November.

"The F-16 would be a great choice for India.

Combat proven time and again.

Upgradable with a high survivability portfolio," Wendell added.

"We formally responded to the Indian government in October, expressing our willingness to

manufacture Gripen E in India, in line with the 'Make in India' vision," said Jan Widerström,

Saab India Technologies' chairman and managing director to IHS Jane's Defence Industry.

"We have a blueprint for a comprehensive 'Make in India' programme for the Gripen E, which

includes the setting up of a full manufacturing facility, at par with our Gripen E facility

in Sweden.

It also includes] transfers of technology, the setting up of an aerospace ecosystem,

the development of a local supplier base, and employment of a well-trained workforce,"

he added.

In about eight years, India will be phasing out the ageing fleet of nearly 260 MiG 21

and MiG 27 fighter jets.

So, India has to choose quickly to augment its declining combat fleet if it has to keep

an edge over Pakistan and at the same time be prepared for a two theatre war, one on

the China side and other on the Pakistani side.

It has to be seen which aircraft will finally be able to win the dogfight of the Indian

skies fighter replacement competition.

The Modi government will have a difficult task as the acquisition process normally takes

five to seven years.

But then you started to play with a well-known band here, right?

Afterwards, we started the band Forró in the Dark, together with the Brazilian Mauro Refosco and other musicians who lived here.

I also wanted to say that Rob helped me with an article I did in the New York Times about forró many years ago, link in the description,

because he introduced me to Sérgio Gonzaga, the nephew of Luiz Gonzaga, and I met his family there, in Pernambuco, right?

Tell us a bit about the Brazilian music scene in New York. Are there a lot of chances to see Brazilian music here in New York?

There are. Many. Since the time we started to do forró here, it became very popular here and across the world, in many different countries.

And there are places to dance and listen to forró every week, several times a week.

So basically, you are responsible for Brazilian music being so popular here.

I was ONE of the people responsible.

And before you play for us, do you have any interesting stories, say, from your tours in Brazil, something that happened there? Is it the same as playing here?

Many things. I traveled to many cities. I lived in Brasília, and we went to play in Anapolis. And we say a group playing many genres of Brazilian music,

Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), bossa nova, but in a country music version.

They sang "The Girl from Ipanema" in that style, and the crowd loved it, so they played it again.

And I think that - I thought it was very funny, and that it represented the spirit of Brazilian music, in that it's for the people, and the people are part of the performance.

A couple of the crazier ones I found in my research were the cotton ball diet, where

people would actually eat cotton balls soaked in orange juice.

But crazier than that was the Tape Worm Diet in which people purposefully introduced tape

worms into their bodies in an effort to lose weight.

There is the Adkins Diet, South Beach Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, Volumetrics, Weight Watchers,

Jenny Craig, Paleo and the list goes on and on.

The Zone Diet was developed by "Dr" Barry Sears over a 20 year period.

While it is true that Barry Sears is a "Dr" he has a PhD in biochemistry (something The

Zone Diet's website neglects to tell you in the "About Dr Sears section in which

he is pictured wearing a lab coat much like medical doctors wear)

From what I could find on the Zone Diets webpage as a brief summary of the diet states, "The

key factor in Zone Diet is the hormonal balance you achieve while eating each skillfully prepared

meal.

With a food plan comprising an accurate balanced ratio of carbohydrates (40%), fat (30%) and

proteins (30%); you actually get to eat foods, which control your body's insulin production."

The claims of Barry Sears is that his diet an actually reverse Type 2 diabetes.

The US Army Research Institute of Medicine decided to put the claims to test.

As of 2013, there were "no cross sectional or longitudinal studies examining the potential

health merit of adopting a Zone Diet per se, [and] closely related peer-reviewed findings

from scientific research cast strong doubt over the purported benefits of this diet.

When properly evaluated, the theories and arguments of popular low carbohydrate diet

books like the Zone rely on poorly controlled, non-peer-reviewed studies, anecdotes and non-science

rhetoric."

There is some evidence that the Zone Diet can help you lose weight, but to reverse diabetes?

That is a far fetched claim.

In "Debunking The Zone Diet" Medical Doctor Charles Atwood goes so far as to say, "without

careful monitoring, this type of diet may lead to "ketosis" …. If ketosis sounds familiar,

it's the result when insulin-dependent diabetics can't metabolize carbohydrates without their

insulin injections -- a state leading up to diabetic coma."

So, is the Zone Diet good for diabetes?

I know I will catch some heat from some of you "Zonies" at my answer.

You can lose weight fast but the initial weight loss is water and lean muscle rather than

fat.

From experience with "low carb" diets, I must conclude that "NO" the Zone not

only will never reverse your diabetes, it is a dangerous diet without strict monitoring.
