WHITE GUILT IS USELESS - Duration: 5:07.

Have you ever felt...Guilty?

The first time I remember feeling guilty was in High School and one of my friends let me

borrow her gel pen.

Gel pens were all the rage and she had this really cool one that would change colors as

you wrote with it.

It quickly became one of my favorite pens to write with and even though I borrowed it,

I never gave it back.

When my friend eventually asked me if I still had the pen, I lied to her and told her that

I had lost it.

Little did she know, I still used it to write in my diary.

When I reflected on this moment, I felt guilty because I lied to my friend and when I could

do the right thing…

I didn't.

Guilt was an emotion that i felt because I regretted something that I did and, upon reflection,

understood just how wrong is really was.

But some people feel guilty for things they didn't do.

As a blogger who criticizes White Supremacy, a common complaint that i get is that I'm

trying to make white people feel guilty.

This is always baffling to me because in my own personal experience, guilt is an emotion

that is introspective.

It's an emotion that comes from examining your own choices and actions and realizing

that they are no longer consistent with your moral code.

When I feel guilty about something, it's because..

I'm guilty.

So it's very hard for me to understand how simple discussions about things like Systemic

Racism can cause some white people to feel guilt.

Guilt should be an emotion you feel because you're complicit in something and a lot

of white people who claim to not be racist, seem to always feel as though they're guilty

of something they supposedly haven't engaged in.

But even more interesting to me is this idea that white guilt is something that I personally

find...useful.

Guilt is a persuasive tool in many circumstances.

Crying puppies and a Sarah Mclaughlin song can make you feel guilty enough to send your

money to an animal rights organization.

Testimonials from starving children can make you look at your refrigerator and feel guilty

enough to finally start caring about World Hunger.

But when I discuss racism on my blog, I'm not asking you to feel bad about yourself

or your race and on that premise, suddenly start caring about racism.

Believe it or not, these conversations are larger than you.

I discuss Systemic racism in a historical context because history repeats itself.

Because we are not born into a world free of history and the past, does indeed impact

the future.

Whether you consider yourself racist or not, we are each born into a society that naturally

socializes us with certain biases.

In a society with a history of genocide and oppression, where whiteness is coveted and

assimilation into it is seen as a positive, we cannot ignore how white supremacy sets

the foundation for where we are today and how we interact with each other.

So if we're ever interested in reaching a time where we truly live in the post racist

society, we have to have these conversations.

And maybe these conversations can cause introspection.

Maybe some of the things that I say make you look at your own actions and recognize that

they're hurtful to other people.

And this may make you feel defensive and maybe even guilty,

but at the end of the day, this isn't about you as an individual.

This is about changing our society as a whole.

To take these conversations and make them about your own personal actions is missing

the point and derailing the conversation.

My issue with people who claim that i am trying to make them feel guilty is that on the other

side of that thought, is the idea that I want some sort of action to come from their guilt.

I don't want you to align with anti-racism and fight against white supremacy because

you feel guilty, I want you to do it because it's the right thing to do.

Because you recognize that this is an ideology that is hurting people.

When people hear the phrase "white supremacy", they think burning crosses on front lawns.

It's thought of as this open and blatant act of hate.

But the true danger of white supremacy is that it's subtle, it's socialized and

it's normalized.

I can't hold you, as a white person today, accountable for the history that established

white supremacy but I can hold you accountable for perpetuating it.My blog will continue

to call it out.

And if discussions of white supremacy make you feel guilty, well, that might be cause

for you to look inside yourself and examine why exactly that is.

And on that note, always remember and never forget that you are beautiful and you are loved

I guess in a few hours, or tomorrow, I will testify before the Spanish National Court. The State forces me to appear in order to defend my statements in a municipal plenary session in defense of the right to disobey unjust laws.

I could refuse to testify, since I have nothing to declare, but as they force me to go to the Court, I can't stop thinking that actually we have a lot to say.

This is not my problem or our problem, but their problem. It's the problem of all of those who want to win through the courts something that can only be resolved democratically.

And I want to tell you that it won't be them, it will be us, both independentists and non-independentists, who will decide via the ballot boxes the future of our people, if necessary, without permission.
