Competing at the Olympic Games requires an absolute sacrifice.
For women, that sacrifice is even bigger.
I sacrificed everything for 12 straight years.
(ARRIBA CUBA: LAS MORENAS DEL CARIBE)
The story of "The Caribbean Girls" is, without a doubt,
one of the most compelling in Cuban Olympic history.
In 1978, at the World Championship,
playing against Japan,
the so-called "Oriental Witches"
were defeated by the Cuban team
which became known as "The Caribbean Girls".
That victory became such a sensation that Cuba's
revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro,
gave the team full governmental support.
Thanks to our political system, which is our main sponsor,
allowed us to focus on achieving our goal.
"The Caribbean Girls" became more than a team -
a legend was being forged,
a symbol that went beyond volleyball.
We won our first Games in Barcelona '92.
Cuba hadn't participated in Los Angeles '84 and Seoul '88,
so our generation was really eager to win medals
and we did everything we could to win.
Our motivation for winning was our country.
Cubans love sports,
and our victories brought joy to our people.
Our commitment, other than to our families and our country,
was to the leader of the Revolution.
He always fought for us, to make us better.
He would ask what our goal was and we would reply "winning",
because we represent the Cuban people.
Some people might not understand it,
but those living in Cuba in those difficult years
can understand it very well.
The people needed some sort of joy -
that was our motivation at that time.
They needed it.
In Atlanta, the team was more mature -
there were some changes but we had a strong foundation.
There was a hair salon inside the Olympic village.
We all wanted to look good for the cameras
because the Games were televised.
We wanted to have good hair.
We became distracted,
and we lost our focus.
Our coach got really angry.
He said that wasn't normal
and that he'd lost hope that we'd win gold.
That made us worry.
The Brazilians had prepared very well.
They knew our weaknesses,
and were there to win the gold medal.
It is well known what went down.
That match became more important than the final.
20 years later, people still talk about it.
It was a very tough match because they were so close.
In the end we won
and went on to play the final against China.
Imagine, both teams wanted the medal,
the Brazilians weren't happy, a fight broke out.
But in the end, we won a spectacular match,
a beautiful and tightly contested match.
After the game against Brazil, we were very excited.
Our coach became worried.
The Olympic Games were not over yet,
we still have to play against China
which is as good as Brazil and could beat us.
When you sacrifice so much
and achieve as much as we did,
it tastes like glory.
It's worth all the sacrifices as a teenager and as a woman.
I'd do it again.
Some people think that athletes' lives are easy,
but they aren't.
I didn't have the chance to become a mother,
but I've achieved other things,
which would've been difficult to accomplish if I had chosen
to become a mother, because I would've lost valuable time.
You owe yourself to the team.
Getting pregnant was a big responsibility.
You can't damage the team. All of that must be sacrificed.
The sport goes first.
"The Caribbean Girls" represented
women of the third world in developing countries
as well as Cuban women.
Simple women, of very humble origins, almost all were black.
We represent the strength of Cuban women.
We were the face of Cuba abroad.
We were the ambassadors of Cuba.
They are a symbol for Cuba.
They brought international prestige to Cuban sports
and to Cuban women.
We became role models as women and as a team.
My team was known to have strong women.
We played aggressively.
We were very temperamental, moody, nobody liked to lose.
Those two things combined were explosive.
Cuban women have always been aggressive and feisty.
That aggressiveness was necessary because there were
great teams that pushed us to the limit on every game,
so we had to be aggressive.
When they looked at my face, without me saying a word,
they'd realise they couldn't beat me.
I try to teach my athletes that same aggressiveness,
the perseverance and fighting spirit
that we had on the court.
The aggressiveness in the jump, the power of the attack...
Those were concepts shared by all of us
and we try to pass that on to the new generations.
Eugenio George, our coach, was like a father to us.
He trained us to play hard
but also taught us to be feminine.
We played like men, but after the game we were ourselves.
Feminine, modest, fragile, delicate, with many virtues.
Despite the toughness of training,
you have to preserve your essence as a woman.
He taught us how to project our femininity,
how to wear make-up, how to dress, even how to walk.
He made us read so we could express ourselves better.
He wanted us to dress up and be elegant,
so we'd go around turning heads.
He wanted people to notice the Cuban team.
We owe so much to that great man, because he made us
what we are, what we were.
Our coach used to say
that we defended our country in the trenches of sport.
By defending our colours,
respecting each other,
looking after yourself, as a human being, as a woman.
We are like family -
that's what Eugenio taught us.
Every now and then we all get together,
we are always connected.
We always find a way to gather "The Caribbean Girls"
from the first to the last.
- Victory! - Cuba!
(RUSSIAN FEDERATION, SET POINT)
From Sydney 2000,
many people remember the match against Russia
because we were down after two sets.
The first two sets were intense for both teams,
but we got back in the game,
due to our superior athletic conditioning.
By the fifth set, the Russians were tired.
It was my turn to serve.
The ball bounced back.
I passed it to Taymaris Agüero.
She passed it to Regla.
I can't even explain the rest.
I get very emotional talking about it.
I came to know each one of them so deeply.
I dreamt of them.
I cried and laughed with them.
There are no words to describe
everything I felt as captain of that team.
That team, "The Caribbean Girls",
should live in the hearts
of all those who love volleyball.
We just want to be remembered as "The Caribbean Girls" -
as the great champions we became.

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho 'to offer £53m plus Anthony Martial' for Real Madrid star
According Don Balon, who are renowned for making outlandish transfer claims, Manchester United are set to offer the Spanish giants £53m (€60m) plus Anthony Martial.
But the Spanish publication claim Real Madrid are unlikely to accept that offer.
Bernabeu bigwig Florentino Perez is reportedly only willing to part with Bale for £88m (€100m).
The Wales international is out of favour at Real Madrid after an injury-plagued 18 months.
He has found himself on the bench for a string of crucial fixtures this term and is likely to be sold to fund a squad rebuild.
Don Balon say Jose Mourinho is eager to bring Bale to Old Trafford.
It is claimed Real Madrid fancy swooping for Martial and that Mourinho has caught wind of their interest.
He is reportedly willing to chuck the French forward into a deal for Bale in an effort to lower the cash price.
Martial has been linked with a move away from United after a difficult campaign.
The 22-year-old has failed to nail down a regular role in Mourinho's team and speculation raged when he was left out of the 18-man squad for the 1-0 win against Watford.
He was spotted driving away from Old Trafford three hours before kick off but Mourinho has revealed he sustained a knee injury in the build up to the final game of the campaign.
He was injured in Fridays training session, yesterday he couldnt train, Mourinho said.

WHAT I LEARNED IN AMERICA! [SUB ITA] - Duration: 7:51.
Hi guys it's Debbie! As you may have noticed from my different background in
my latest videos, I'm no longer in the house in the United States but I'm back
home in Italy. While I was living in America I had the opportunity to
experience all the aspects of daily life and compare them with my life back at
home. But I also had a lot of time to reflect about my experience as a whole.
So today I'd like to speak about what I learned from my trip. The first thing I
learned in America was to perceive distance in a different way. In Europe we
are used to having everything very close to us, everything is very small. If I were
to now step out of the house and start driving, in a couple of hours I could be
in Austria, than Germany; if I drove east I could be in Croatia, Slovenia in a few
hours or I could drive west, drive all the way through France and be in Spain
by tomorrow morning. But in the United States the concept of distance is
different: for a holiday I once did 11 and a half hours straight on a plane and
I was still inside the United States! In America everything is bigger and a
European country could easily fit inside one of the 50 American states. So people
have a different approach to travelling, it's very common for an American to
travel long distances. I've heard of people commuting for work on planes, many
people who work in the big cities (such as New York) but live in the suburbs will
even leave two hours in the morning in order to take the train into the city. On
Thanksgiving I met a family who had driven for 4 hours straight to be there
for dinner, and right after that they would have done another 4 hours back
home. And living in America I had to adapt to these distances: my boyfriend
and I lived in two different states and we would spend hours on buses and trains
to meet up. So now when I think of having to take a "long" train to Milan (or to
anywhere really) I see it in a different way,
I think of it more as a normal thing, not something to prepare for. On the day I
came back to Italy my plane landed in Rome, and I did an overnight seven and a
half hour bus ride all the way up to the north. But at the same time I remember
that on my third week in America it took me over 5 hours just to get home from
Westchester County, which is just above New York City. The second thing I learned
is a thing I guess most people learn once they live abroad, and that is
appreciating some things from your home country. Before leaving for America I had
travelled a lot but it had always been journeys in the order of weeks, never
longer. So I never actually experienced the reality of living somewhere else, of
living abroad, of paying taxes in a foreign country, obtaining a foreign
driver's license, visiting a doctor. And before leaving I
used to be heavily critical about Italy. Most people in Italy are actually quite critical of their country.
I was always complaining about how things
worked (or didn't work), I would insist about how things would be better
abroad and so on. And some things were better abroad, but I also realised just
how many things I gave for granted back at home. I think you tend to realise more
about things in the absence of them. So I saw home in a different way. And it
wasn't just missing home and missing the things I was used to, it was realising
that I had been complaining about a situation which in reality wasn't that bad. The
third thing I learned is that if you are a person with an artistic walk of life,
the American Dream can be true. In the United States, especially in the big
cities there are many environments which allow people with an artistic career to
express themselves, meet people in their branch, in general improve, boost their
career. This doesn't mean that if you're artistically talented in your home
country nobody will notice you. But I've noticed that in America because of all
the intertwined net of businesses, of business people working in specific
branches, if you are a person with a talented artistic career, you may have
higher chances of boosting your career. Another thing I learned is how proud
Americans are of their country. Every morning in school the kids recite the
Pledge of Allegiance, which is also recited before other events, the American
flag is hung everywhere and in general there's a feeling of people being proud
of being American. And this idea of feeling proud is also demonstrated in
smaller events, in personal achievements. For example I've noticed many families
displaying big signs outside their houses congratulating their kids for
graduating from high school, University graduations are a huge celebration.
And even smaller scholastic achievements, personal achievement, sporting
achievements are always seen as something big, something to be proud of, to
celebrate. Back in Italy, England and I think in Europe in general, we are proud
of our achievements, we are proud of being part of our country but it's in a
more reserved manner. "Oh, no hugs dear! I'm British". Another thing I noticed in
America is that you either go big or you go home. What I mean is that I've noticed
that in Europe there is extreme wealth, there is poverty but most Europeans
share a similar lifestyle. And even if you're slightly above the line or
slightly under it, you have access to the same benefits, the same education, the
same health system. If I think of all my friends over the years, I have had
friends living in villas, driving SUVs and friends living in welfare homes. And
we were all applying for the same universities, looking for the same jobs,
shopping at the same supermarkets. People who graduated from university have
better opportunities of finding better jobs, but even if you graduate from high
school you can find a good job. Now this is just my impression as an outsider
visiting the United States for a certain period of time, so I'd like to hear the
opinion of anybody from the United States. But what I've noticed in America was
a distinctive gap between wealth and poverty. In America certain options are
very very expensive: university costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and if
you can't afford to attend it (highly likely) you may not have good job
opportunities, I've read articles describing the gap between the public
education system and the private one, if you can't afford to have access to a
good health insurance you may not have access to the treatments you need, the
checkups you need, if you don't have a high income you may not be able to
afford healthy food options, but there is only a huge gap right down to the penny saver
stores which offer unhealthy options. And it all becomes a vicious circle, there is
not an in-between option. So I've learned that under this aspect there are many
differences with Europe, but I repeat this is just an outsider point of view a
view I've been able to patch together thanks to the opinions of different
people I've met, so I'd love to hear an insider opinion. Instead on a lighter note
I've learned that the stereotype of America looking just like in the movies...
is real. Everything you've seen about American films is more or less what it
actually looks like. If you grew up seeing film elements such as the yellow
school buses, huge coffee cups, the Super Bowl and Christmas lights in Times
Square... that's how it is! And if you are a film fan chances are that you can walk
into any town in America and something has been filmed there or an actor or a
director used to live there. One last thing I learned in America (and a thing I
had lazily started to appreciate) was how easily you could get something done,
thanks to drive-throughs, apps, simplified online versions of everything, the long
hours the stores were open... In America you can carry out most things
online, from taking an Uber wherever at whatever time, to swiping into your gym
class, to knowing how far away your bus is, to your food order. And even if you
forget something, don't worry! The superstore will be open until late hours or
it will have it drive-through. I hope you enjoyed this video, if you did make sure
to subscribe and I'll see you soon, bye!

break for me although it's been quite warm here
that sky was kind of surprised not expecting that but I got a lot done and
so anyway just wanted to close out this video with you guys but I'll still be
back with you in a couple days from somewhere I just don't know where yet
and the last thing I want to talk about is if you'd notice the last couple weeks
I am NOT clean-shaven anymore I'm letting it go but I'm letting to go for
a very specific reason actually I have kinda half decided to grow it out as
long as I can put up with it and in the past those of you that know me know I
only make it two months I've made it to the two month mark five times to the
world and then cut it but this time I'm working towards seeing how far it can
really get and what it can become and possibly in a year from now in June 2019
I might be able to show you a really neat time-lapse of I don't know what
will happen but I'm excited to see where it goes and I'm sharing that with you
publicly in case you're wondering months down there
why it's starting to look a little crazy that's because I'm not gonna touch it
okay I'm not gonna trim it I'm not gonna mess with it I'm gonna see how far I go
and maybe I just go two months again I don't know but you only live once I kind
of want to see what other like with a crazy unkept beard and you guys will see
the transformation over the months to come
so we'll get back on the road in the next video and I'll see you guys soon
bye guys

Cuba's Spectacular Caribbean Volleyball Girls| Arriba Cuba - Duration: 13:14.

Me gustaban Arconada y López Ufarte.
