Hello everyone thank you for joining me, I'm Kerri. Today I'll be showing you how
to make a cat potholder, or you could use the pattern for an applique. I had a
cat called Smokey who was a feral kitten born behind our shed with the rest of
the litter. We rescued the kittens when they were old enough and got homes for
them but kept smokey and his brother Ricky. Smokey died a few years ago and
Ricky is very old. I tried to make the potholder look like smokey. He was very
mischievous and in the photo he had gone into a plastic shopping bag because he
knew his food came out of them and he got stuck.
I'll be using 8-ply wool which is light worsted in the US and double-knit in
the UK. Use wool not synthetic as the synthetic would melt.
I've got dark and light grey, green for the eyes, white, black and pink. I'll use a
1.25 millimeter crochet hook. I've also got scissors and a
darning needle to weave in my ends. I've got sewing thread and needle to
stitch it together and white four ply crochet cotton for the whiskers, but you
could embroider them on if you'd prefer. Now I start on the main part of the potholder, the head.
So using my dark gray I make a magic loop and work three chain
and then work fourteen double crochet into my circle.
I pull the circle tight and slip stitch in the third chain. For row two
I work three chain
and work one double crochet in the same place as the chain and then two double
crochet into each stitch around. So I'll continue around row two and I'll meet
you at the end of the row. At the end of the row I'll slip stitch in the third
chain. Rows three and four are worked the same. We start with three chain and work
one double crochet in the same place as the chain and then work one double
crochet into each of the next two stitches
and two double crochet into the following stitch and we repeat that all
the way round. So one double crochet into each of the next two stitches and two
double crochet into the following stitch. All the way around to the end of the row
and then slip stitch into the third chain. So I'll work rows three and four
and I'll be back. At the end of row four we slip stitch in the third chain. For
row five we start with three chain and work one double crochet in the same
place as the chain and then we work one double crochet into each of the next
three stitches
and two double crochet into the following stitch and we repeat that
right around the row. So one double crochet into each of the next three
stitches and two double crochet into the following stitch, right round to the end
of the row. So I'll work around this row and I'll meet you at the end. At the end of
the row I slip stitch into the third chain.
For row six I start with three chain and work one double crochet in the same place as
the chain and then one double crochet into each of the next four stitches.
And then two double crochet into the following stitch and I repeat that right
round to the end of the row. So one double crochet into each of the next
four stitches and two double crochet into the following stitch, right round to
the end of the row. At the end of the row we join with a slip stitch in the
third chain. For row seven we start with three chain and work one double crochet in
the same place as the chain and then one double crochet into each of the next
five stitches and two double crochet into the following stitch and we repeat
that to the end of the row. So one double crochet into each of the next five
stitches and two into the following stitch to the end of the row. So I'll
continue around row seven and I'll meet you at the end of the row. At the end of
the row we join with a slip stitch in the third chain. For row eight we start
with three chain and work one double crochet in the same place as the chain and
then one double crochet into each of the next six stitches.
And then two double crochet into the following stitch and we repeat that all
the way round to the end of the row. So that was one double crochet into each
of the next six stitches and two into the following stitch right round to the
end of the row. So I'll work that row and I'll be back. At the end of the row we
join with a slip stitch in the third chain. For row eight we start with three
chain and work one double crochet in the same place as the chain and then work
one double crochet into each of the next seven stitches.
And then two double crochet into the following stitch and we repeat that all
the way around. So one double crochet into each of the
next seven stitches and then two into the following stitch all the way around.
So I'll complete this row and I'll meet you at the end. At the end of the row we
join with a slip stitch in the third chain. For row ten we start with three
chain and work one double crochet in the same place as the chain and then we
work one double crochet into each of the next eight stitches.
And then two double crochet into the following stitch and we'll repeat that
right around the row. So that was one double crochet into each of the next
eight stitches and two double crochet into the following stitch right round to
the end of the row. So I'll work around this row and I'll be back. At the end of the
row we join with a slip stitch into the third chain. For row eleven we start with
one chain and we work one single crochet in the same place as the chain and then
work one single crochet into each stitch around to halfway, so about here. So I'll
work a single crochet into each stitch to halfway and I'll be back. Once we get
to halfway we work twenty-five chain.
And we work a single crochet in the same place as our last single crochet and
then continue working one single crochet in each stitch around to the beginning
of the row. So that's for our hanger part. So I'll continue around to the beginning
of the row and I'll meet you there. At the end of the row we join with a slip
stitch in the chain. For row twelve we start with one chain and work a single
crochet in the same place as the chain and then we work a single crochet into
each stitch around, including into our chain for the hanger part. So I'll
continue around the row working one single crochet into each stitch and I'll
meet you at the end of the row. At the end of the row we join with a slip
stitch in the chain and fasten off,
and that's the head part done. For the inner eye I've got my green and I make a
magic loop and work three chain and fifteen double crochet into my circle.
I pull the circle tight and slip stitch into the third chain and fasten
off.
For the inner eye, I've got my black and I make a magic loop and work one chain and
eight single crochet into my circle.
I pull the circle tight and slip stitch into the chain
and fasten off.
For the nose I've got my pink and I make a magic loop and work two chain and
one half double crochet into my circle. I pull the circle tight but I don't
join. For row two I work two chain and turn. I work one half double crochet in the same
place as the chain. One half double crochet into the next stitch and two half double
crochet into the top of the chain, the two chain at the beginning.
For row three I work two chain and turn. I work one half double crochet
into the same place as the chain, just in there. One half double crochet into each
stitch and two half double crochet into the top of the chain and fasten off
and that's the nose. For the white face marking we start with a magic
loop and work two chain, two half double crochet into our circle. Then three
treble,
six half double crochet,
three treble,
and three half double crochet into our circle.
We pull the circle tight and then slip stitch into the second chain. For row
two we start with two chain and work one half double crochet into the next stitch.
Two half double crochet into the following stitch and then two treble
into each of the next three stitches.
Next we work two half double crochet into the next stitch and one half double
crochet into each of the following four stitches
and then two half double crochet into the next stitch and then two treble into
each of the next three stitches.
Two half double crochet into the next stitch and
one double crochet into each remaining stitch
and then slip stitch into the second chain. For row three we start with three
chain and work one double crochet into each of the next four stitches.
Two double crochet into each of the following six stitches.
One double crochet into each of the next eight
stitches.
Two double crochet into each of the following six stitches.
And then one double crochet into each of the remaining stitches and join with a
slip stitch in the top of the third chain. For row four we start with three
chain and work one double crochet in the same place as the chain and one
double crochet into each of the next two stitches
and two double crochet into the following stitch. Now we're going to work one
double crochet into the next stitch and two double crochet into the following
stitch, six times. So one double crochet into the next stitch and two double
crochet into the following stitch six times.
Now we work one double crochet into each of the next two stitches and two double
crochet into the following stitch, three times. So one double crochet into each of
the next two stitches and two into the following stitch, three times.
Now we work one double crochet into the next stitch and two double crochet into
the following stitch, six times. So one double crochet into the next stitch and
two double crochet into the following stitch six times.
Now we work one double crochet into each of the next two stitches. Two double
crochet into the following stitch and one double crochet into any remaining
stitches. Join with a slip stitch in the third chain and fasten off and that's
the first part of the marking done. Now for the top part of the marking I'm
going to find my center stitch and then I join my cotton three stitches back from
the center stitch
and I work three chain and I work one double crochet into each of the next six
stitches.
For row two I work three chain and turn. I work a joined double crochet over the
first two stitches and then work one double crochet into each stitch to the
last stitch and then work a joined double crochet over the last stitch and the top
of the three chain.
For row three I work three chain and turn and work a joined double crochet over the
first two stitches and then work one double crochet into each stitch to the
last stitch and work a joined double crochet over the last stitch and the top
of the three chain.
For row four I start with three chain and turn. I work a joined double crochet over the
first two stitches.
A double crochet into the next stitch and a joined double crochet over the last stitch and the top
of the three chain.
For row five I work three chain and turn and I work a double crochet cluster over all
the stitches
and that's the marking done. I'm going to do a neatening row right around. So I
start with one chain and work one single crochet into each stitch around.
So I'll continue around with my neatening row and I'll meet you at the end of the
row. And when we get back round to the beginning we slip stitch into the chain
and fasten off
and that's the face marking done. Now I've got my main piece and I'm going to
start on the inner ear. For the cat's left side I joined my cotton eighteen stitches
before the hanger. So in this stitch here and I work one chain and work one single
crochet into the same stitch as the chain and then I work one single crochet
into the next stitch and two single crochet into the following stitch, three
times. So one single crochet into the next stitch and two into the following
stitch three times
and then one single crochet into the next stitch. For row two we work one
chain and turn and work a joined single crochet over the first two stitches. Work
one single crochet into each stitch to the last two stitches
and work a joined single crochet over the last two stitches.
For row three we work one chain and turn and work a joined single crochet over the first
two stitches and then one single crochet into each stitch to the last two
stitches and work a joined single crochet over the last two stitches. And
then for row four it's worked the same. One chain and turn, a joined single
crochet over the first two stitches and
one single crochet into each stitch to the last two stitches and work a joined
single crochet over the last two stitches. And the following row is the
same. One chain and turn, a joined single crochet over the first two stitches. One
single crochet into each stitch to the last stitch and then a joined single
crochet over the last two stitches. The next row is one chain and turn. Work a
joined single crochet over the first two stitches and then a joined single
crochet into the same stitch as the last part of the joined single crochet and the
next stitch. And the last row, one chain and turn and work a joined single
crochet over our two stitches and fasten off.
For the other ear we miss ten stitches from the hanger and join in the
eleventh stitch
and it's worked the same. We work one chain and work a single crochet in the
same place as the chain and then one single crochet in the next stitch and two
in the following stitch, three times
and then work one single crochet in the following stitch. Then we work one chain
and turn and we work a joined single crochet over the first two stitches. One
single crochet into each stitch to the last stitch, sorry to the last two
stitches and a joined single crochet over the last two stitches. And we just
continue like that, one chain and turn, a joined single crochet over the first two
stitches, one single crochet in each stitch to the last two stitches and a
joined single crochet over the last two stitches.
Once we've got three stitches left we work a joined single crochet over the
first two stitches and then a joined single crochet over the same stitch and
the last stitch. And then for the last row it's one chain and turn and a joined
single crochet over the two stitches and
fasten off. Now I'll just weave in my ends and I'll be back and I'll do the
outer ears, round the ears. Now for around the ears I joined my cotton
on the wrong side, the stitch before the inner ear. I'm using my dark gray and I
work one single crochet into each stitch around the ear. So just find a suitable
place to insert the hook for my single crochets.
So I'll continue around the ear working a single crochet into each stitch and
then I'll be back. Now I've worked a row single crochet around the ear. Now I slip
stitch into the next stitch on the head and then slip stitch into the following
stitch and turn and now I'm going to work a row of double crochet around the
ear. So I just work one or two stitches into each stitch just to keep it flat.
I'll work an extra double crochet in this stitch
and another one in this stitch, just so it keeps flat around the bend and also
in this next, probably the next two stitches I'll work two double crochet into
each stitch.
I'll work two double crochet into this stitch here
and another one in the last stitch, just so it bends into the head properly and
then slip stitch into the head and fasten off.
Now I'll work the other ear the same and I'll work another set of eyes and I'll be
back to put it together. Now here's all my pieces except for the whiskers. I'll
use thin cotton to crochet lengths of chain for the whiskers once I have it
put together so I know how long the whiskers need to be. The first things I'll
do is add a tiny white dot on both of the inner eyes and I'll attach the nose
to the face marking. The bottom of the nose goes just over the center
hole and then using the wool from the nose I'm going to embroider a mouth onto
the face marking as well. Now the nose and mouth are attached to the face
marking. So I'll stitch that on there now making sure i center it properly and
the bottom goes to the bottom there. Also I'll stitch the inner eyes to the outer
eyes, just in like that. Now the next thing I do is stitch the eyes to the
face, probably about there and using my four ply crochet cotton
I've worked some chain. I just do enough chain so that I have about two
chain sticking off the edge of the head. So I'll do four whiskers for each
side and I'll also do some eyebrows I've got three, I'll do probably
twenty-five chain with my four ply and they'll just come up around here each
side. So three lots of twenty-five chain for each side. So I'll do them and attach
them and I'll be back to show you the finished cat.
And there's the finished cat potholder, you could of course embroider on the
whiskers if you prefer. If you liked my video please like, subscribe and share.
