Hi everyone and welcome to this new video where I will talk about car washes.

If you were born in the United States, you probably don't think American customs are

all that strange.

But it turns out, we have some relatively bizarre tastes - especially in regards to

beauty.

Success in the U.S. is often measured by one's ability to earn a lot of money.

So, naturally, many things Americans find attractive are rooted in the appearance of

wealth.

With that in mind, here are some things Americans, especially, find pleasing to the eye.

That sun-kissed look

In the U.S., many women with lighter skin tones strive to achieve a suntanned look.

Dermatologist Dr. Deborah Sarnoff told The Skincare Foundation that this trend is relatively

recent, saying,

"Tanned skin is not, nor has it ever been, a universally accepted ideal."

While European and Brazilian women also go for a sun-kissed look - we're not in the majority.

Women throughout China, Korea, Thailand, and India strive to lighten their natural skin

tone.

For centuries, pale skin was thought to indicate high status.

But in the 1920s, French fashion designer Coco Chanel popularized tanning in France

and abroad - and by the '60s, having a tan in America signified a life of luxurious leisure

because it meant you had the time - and the money - to travel.

Straight pearly whites

In America, the whiter your chompers, the better.

According to the Simmons National Consumer Survey, more than 39 million Americans used

teeth-whitening products in 2017.

And not only are we obsessed with whitening, we also want our teeth to be straight.

In 2015, New York Magazine reported that over the previous 20 years, the number of American

and Canadian teenagers receiving orthodontic treatment just about doubled.

Adults, too, now make up a quarter of all orthodontic patients throughout North America.

But not everyone's feeling that megawatt smile.

Professor Jimmy Steele of Newcastle University's Dental School, told BBC News that Brits prefer

natural smiles, saying,

"U.S. teeth are sometimes whiter than it is physically possible to get in nature."

Thin is (still) in

Obesity in America reached an all time high in 2016, yet it's obvious from our cultural

output that Americans still aspire to be thin.

But in places without access to western media, like parts of Nicaragua, people don't obsess

over their weight.

That is, until - as one university study found - they started watching our TV shows.

Sure enough, they started idealizing thinner bodies.

A full face of makeup

While fresh faces may be trending, Americans are still very into cosmetics.

But are we more into makeup than other countries?

Maybelline Spain makeup artist, Gato Zamora, told The Cut,

"You guys take risks.

In Spain it's much quieter."

Zamora noted how Americans wear false lashes even to work - which is not the case in Spain.

Laura Mercier of the French cosmetic line also noted the contrast, saying,

"It really astonishes me the way American women wear so much makeup.

French women are not flashy.

They must be subtle.

The message must not be, 'I'm spending hours on my face to look beautiful.'"

"To me, the feelings I feel on beauty is that every woman is beautiful.

If you touch too much, you change yourself."

Hair - where?

While some American celebs, like Madonna and Miley Cyrus, are all about their natural armpits,

they're certainly not the norm in the U.S.

Most American women prefer a relatively hair-free look, but we're not the only ones.

Both men and women shave their armpits in Colombia and Turkey.

But in China, hair removal wasn't a thing until about twenty years ago.

Nailing (and blowing) it

As Americans, we may not think we're that different from our friends across the pond.

But British-born writer, Suzanne Jannese, doesn't quite "get" her American sisters.

She writes,

"You seem to spend an unholy amount of time being groomed: blow-dry salons (something

the UK hasn't gotten into…yet) and making time in your day to get your nails done and

hair coiffed."

Well, it isn't called "America the beautiful" for nothing.

How to paint realistic water droplets in watercolour with Anna Mason - Duration: 4:13.

Hi it's Anna Mason.

In this video I wanted so show you the process I go through to paint water droplets in watercolour.

And it's NOT what you might think.

They're not painted on afterwards using white paint for the highlights.

Instead I layer them up...

I began with the drawing, working from a photo which shows the water droplets nice

and clearly.

Using a light touch with my pencil I outlined the droplets themselves together with any

major shape of highlight within them.

Because we're working with watercolour, we need to get those shiny highlights within

the droplets in position right at the beginning.

So I used a very watery purple mix and carefully went around any droplets where the highlights

were as light as my paper colour leaving them with no paint on them.

In some of the other droplets the highlights weren't as light and for those, this pale purple

mix was a match to their highlights, so I applied the paint right the way over them,

as a wash with my brush; but I always made sure to leave any droplets where the highlights

were even lighter than this pale purple mix.

Next I created a thick purple mix that was a match to the darkest purples in the petals,

and the droplets.

I used it to paint all the areas, which are this dark.

The droplets are simply painted as part of the same process of painting the rest of the

petals, breaking them down into shapes of light and dark colour.

Next I worked on the midtones within the petals, and droplets.

Again I left any droplets that were lighter in colour than the mix I was using.

The key here is not to think about what you're painting, but simply to try to recreate exactly

the shapes of colour that you see.

You could even think of them as a pattern on the petals themselves.

You want to get out of the mindset that these are physical 3D droplets that sit on top of

the petals.

That might be what they are in real life - but not when we're painting.

I then did exactly the same with a more watery lighter midtone mix, again working on areas

this tone, or value, within the droplets, but being sure to paint around any of the

lighter areas of highlight and ensuring, as always, that my layer underneath was dry first.

I then continued to build up the midtones around the droplets and also within them always

trying to get the shapes of colour and the shapes of highlight I was leaving, in just

the right places.

After painting the flower centre and stem, it was time for some tonal adjustments, so

I re-assessed the lightest tones in the flower, including the droplets and darkened them a

touch with another layer of some watery paint where required.

Then with those darkened I could see I needed to take the darkest tones a little darker

to balance things up and ensure that the droplets were looking correct tonally, which in turn

makes them look 3D.

Finally I used my tiniest brush to add an extra level of detail - adding in the smallest

shapes of colour within each droplet, always making sure that those shapes are at just

the right angles so that the eye is tricked into thinking it's a real droplet.

Honda's first turbocharged Civic Type R comes to Australia's Best Driver's Car with its

eyes on the prize

Honda's first turbocharged Civic Type R makes its debut at Australia's Best Driver's as

one of the quickest vehicles to ever lap the motoring.com.au test track.

With a sizzling 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO up front, and more wings and flares than a fighter jet,

the Civic Type R has the brawn and the ability to set a cracking pace at this year's event;

Honda making no bones that it's gaze is locked firmly on first place.

But whether our judges would warm to the aggressive, and let's face it pricey Japanese hot hatch

was another matter entirely; the firmly damped tenth-generation Civic an-at-times uncomfortable

partner on our challenging Victorian High Country circuit.

But as the Civic's Nurburgring lap record proves, race track performance is a force to be reckoned

Bathurst-winner Luke Youlden extremely complimentary of the Honda's abilities

The front-drive Type R struggled for launch grip at our improvised drag strip, but set

a time reflective of a hard start on a public road, crossing the 400-metre mark in just

more than 15 seconds.

The judges raved about the Honda Civic Type R. Recurring themes showed glowing praise

of the body-hugging seats, slick-shifting gear stick, involved feel at the wheel, and

breathtaking VTEC TURBO engine.

Power-down grip and incredible mid-corner balance were likewise stand-outs, the dated

man-machine interface and lack of vocal aggro two of only a handful of negatives cited.

The Honda Civic Type R finishes Australia's Best Driver's Car in second-place by the narrowest

of margins.
