Hey Everybody, today I'm going to turn you from an author of fiction into an author of non-fiction
so you can write your own success story. Sound good? Or are you
wondering "what the heck is he talking about?"
Okay so here's what I mean:
Think about something that in your life you've wanted to accomplish but you've not yet
done it...in fact maybe you've even tried and you've got started and got stuck and turned back
and you've kind of given up on it. But it's something you still want but
in the back of your head you're kind of like "I can't do it for whatever reason"
You know if you're to say "I want to achieve X but..." whatever comes after that
"but" that's your story and that's what I want to talk to you about today.
Your story that you're telling yourself that's probably fiction but you just
happen to believe it. So let's go back to history class for a second, your history
and physics, we've got Sir Isaac Newton and his first law which states that an
item or an object in motion or at rest will remain so until acted upon by an
external force. Okay so what does that mean? How is that relative for what we're
talking about here? Well we have to understand what's keeping us stuck, right?
What's keeping us at rest or what's keeping us in motion towards a
particular direction that we don't want to be, based on what we say where we want to go.
Well that's our story. We're telling ourselves what we can't
accomplish, what value we bring to the world. What we're worth.
All this kind of stuff, that's our story and all the reasons why we can't.
Why we can't-can't-can't. So we need to replace that story. We need an external
force to get us off of being at rest or to go down particular direction
we need an external force that's going
to drive us towards the goal that we want to achieve. Make sense?
And that's going to be in the form of a new story. A new work of nonfiction.
So at first though you start telling yourself that "I can't accomplish this,
I can't accomplish that" it's going to feel like fiction because you've never done it before
and that's totally okay. That brings up Newton's third law which is
for every action there's an equal and opposite reaction.
Meaning you start to write your new story of what you can accomplish, and then
lo and behold your old story kicks in and we've got this tug-of-war this push-pull
happening around why you still can't do it you can do or what you want to accomplish.
So we have to just recognize your new story needs to be more powerful
than your old story so it's an unbalanced force which is going to cause
movement toward that what you want to achieve. So how do
we make your new story more powerful than your old one? Well we've got to face it,
your old story, you've probably had it around for a while you've repeated it a lot of times
you know it off by heart, you've coloured the pictures in right?
We have to make this new story more powerful and we do
that by connecting it with a bigger reason. In fact what I'm talking about
here is a bigger "why". What is so important to you that you're gonna
achieve what you want to achieve? It's got to be a personal reason,
something you have an emotional connection to something that's bigger than the
resistance and bigger than your own internal negative self-talk.
And the other part about this too is that we need other people supporting our story.
We need people reminding us about the chapters and when we forget about them
so we need to get around positive people that are supporting us. So what's our first
step to write the more positive story? Instead of writing "I can't accomplish
this because..." we need to start off with "I am going to accomplish X because..." and we
insert your "why" in there. "I'm gonna accomplish it - I'm going to earn more money
because I want to contribute to a charity that means something to me."
"I want to lose weight because I want to be healthier and be able to be more active
and go hang out with my kids or grandkids." Right? "I want to
work on myself and have a better personal development core so I can be a
better father son husband friend business owner, whatever the case is.
We have to have a level of belief in what we're going to accomplish, we need to be
clear on it as well. We have to recognize guys it's a path. Stories aren't
one-pagers, unless you read Reader's Digest but we're not about
Reader's Digest here, it's about long term. Your story of success is going to
be at least like a little novel. You're going to start the beginning, there's going to
be different chapters to your growth, to what you accomplish, the different
directions that you're going to go. You're going to have conflict and drama and
adventures and eventually at the end - not the end of your life, end of this particular story -
you're going to get there. Because you just have to keep flipping the pages and
keep seeing what happens keep trying to keep believing that there's going to be a
positive outcome. And how do we do that if we've never accomplished what
we want to accomplish before? It's like trying to kick a can down the
road a kilometre with one almighty boot. You can't do it, you've got to kick it
little bits at a time. A little bit at a time. And the same thing with you
rewriting your story. Write the first little bit and then take some action on it.
Just a little bit and see what happens. You get experience when you do that.
You develop confidence through the action that you take. And after doing
that enough times and recognizing that when the resistance pops up,
it's supposed to be there it's your old story trying to rear it's ugly head,
just go "oh that's the old story yeah we're done with that one we've got that one in
the trash we're working on the new story." Just recognize that it's just resistance
and that's okay, it's going to happen. So we need a strategy to get us started,
that's our "why", something that's going to be powerful enough to get us that force to
move us off the direction that we were going, and then we need to make sure we
stay connected with that "why" to keep us moving. Now at first when you get started
you need a lot more energy, a lot more power to move something that's not moving.
But once it's moving or once something's changed direction, it doesn't need
as much power and force to keep it either moving in the direction or
changing direction. But just little taps. And that can come in the form of hanging
out with positive people that remind you of what you can accomplish and what you're
capable of. Your daily affirmations and rereading your story. Having a dream
chart showing you accomplishing the things that you want to accomplish.
Writing them out daily "I'm on the path of accomplishing X, Y, and Z."
We've got to reprogram ourselves with our new more powerful
more "why" connected story. So that's it for this week guys I hope that you found
that valuable. If you have any questions about how to how to get clear on your
"why" or how to rewrite your story about what you're going to accomplish,
