Youtube daily report Jan 5 2018

You are one of those who tattoo themselves wolves because they think that it gives them a certain air

of rudeness or those who in their social network profiles tend to be

pseudonyms such as lone wolf Pérez Díaz good if you feel

identified with the previous questions and the image of this mythical

animal let me introduce you to the most terrible of all and by far the most

recognized the abhorrent Fenrir though let me warn you something, the beginning of his

story may leave you more of a feeling of

It is a shame that it is because of the foregoing that we will know it in great detail.

that you can get a much better idea about this mythology through

of this video that we will call Fenrir the prophecy of the beginning of the end

Already from the first stanzas of the Völuspa, a völva warns Odin that at

this in Járnvidr, among the litter of beasts will emerge one, destroyer of the moon

in the form of troll. It is from here, in the beginning, that the prophecy affects

the ears of the father of wisdom making noise throughout his

history; but how was Fenrir born?

It is said that not happy with his faithful wife Sygin, Loki, sometimes took off

towards Jotunheim, in search of love affairs. In one of those times heading east

I spend some nights with the giantess Angrboda, from this relationship three

monstrous children: the greatest was the wolf Fenrir, the second was Jormungand the

Largest of the snakes and the third was a daughter named Hel.

When the gods heard that the father of lies, he fathered these

children, they were alarmed, they then discussed what to do with them in Urd's well, in

where the three Norns warned them: His mother is evil, said Urd, but his father is worse

said Verdandi, you can not expect anything good from them, but the worst, said Skuld,

they will only harm and endanger everyone, they will participate in the

killing, they all said in unison. Listening to this the gods agreed that

Loki's children, they had to be captured. At the urging of Odin, a

group of gods crossed to Jotunheim at night, burst into the hall of Angrboda

and they gagged and bound her even before she had rubbed her eyes.

They then kidnapped their children and took them back to Asgard.

An act of Venezuelan comedy is not true. Odin had no doubts about what

what should be done picked up Jormungand and threw it into the ocean that

surrounded Midgard, the world of men, threw him through the air crashing

against the surface of the water and it sank to the bottom of the sea

then he took a look at Hel and threw it into the mist in the dark

arid of Nilfheim, the world beneath the worlds and as he fell he heard the

Odin's decree, that he should take care of the dead with the condition

in addition to her sharing any food she had with whom

I came to her. At the thought of Fenrir, Odin decided that

It would be better if the gods themselves watched over him. At first it did not seem

different from any other wolf and all the gods agreed that

there would be no harm in letting him wander through the green and golden fields

of Asgard. Now, of all the gods

only Tyr, the son of Odin, was enough

brave enough to face him alone and give him large quantities of meat to

keep it quiet. With the passage of little time, the gods did not take in changing

of opinion about Fenrir when they saw him grow day by day and more when

Urd, Skuld and Verdandi, renewed their warnings saying that the wolf would cause

the death of Odin. Then they agreed that since they could not kill then there

and then smear the sanctuary of Asgard with his evil blood, they had to trap it

and chain it, then the gods made a powerful chain of iron links

and they called it "Leading". Several of them approached Fenrir,

They showed him the chain and asked him: Are you as strong as this chain? The wolf

inspected "Leading" and said: it's certainly strong, but I'm certainly more

strong. It was all he had to say while he let the gods roll up

The chain around your neck body and legs. They finished, the wolf growled,

and then he stood his huge legs filled his lungs with air and then

He flexed all the muscles of his body making the links

of "Leading" will be separated. The gods wasted no time in making another chain,

it was "Dromi" and twice as strong as "Leading". The links were

so big that no man could have moved them. If you can break this

chain, the gods told Fenrir, you will be

recognized by your strength, in the 9 worlds. Fenrir looked at "Dromi" and thought that

he looked immensely strong, but he already thought that he had also returned

even stronger since he hurt "Leading".

Nobody gains fame without risk, he said, and the gods surrounded him with this

neck the body and legs.

They finished? he growled at the wolf and shook himself so that there was a terrible jingle,

noise and grinding. He turned around and arched his back and hit the chain

against the ground, he tightened his muscles until

were as hard as the iron links of "Dromi" and stood up another

once and plunged its claws into the ground. He tensed and tensed and suddenly, "Dromi"

broke into hundreds of separate links. The shrapnel flew in all directions

after this the gods were scared and thought they could not chain Fenrir,

but Odin said that if someone can make a chain that does not break

that would be a dwarf and sent to the brilliant "Skirnir", the messenger of "Freyr"

to the world of the dark elves, Svaltarfaheim.

"Skirnir", fell under Midgard through dark, wet and dark caves.

There he found Nar, Nain, Niping and hundreds of other dwarves, each one so

terrible as the next and promised them gold and more gold, if they could

tie Fenrir. In the gloom, the eyes of the dwarves shone like

fireflies; they whispered, they planned and they went to work.

They made a necklace as soft and flexible as a silk ribbon and they called it "Gleipnir".

When he returned to Asgard. All the gods thanked Skirnir for going to

this mission. But what is it done? Odin asked,

touching shackle, six things Skirnir said: the sound that a cat makes when

moves, a woman's beard, the roots of a mountain, tendons

of a bear, the breath of a fish and saliva with a bird.

The gods were amazed, but also skeptical of the power of Gleipnir.

If you doubt it as I doubted it, said Skirnir, remember the cunning of the

Dwarves, after all have you ever thought

Why does not a cat make noise when it moves? And why does not a woman have

beard? You can never prove that the mountain does not

has roots, but many things that do not seem to exist, are simply in

the custody of the dwarves. Then a large group of gods approached

Fenrir and for the third time they invited him to go out with them to Lyngv Island, and

middle of Lake Amsvartnir. There the gods showed him Fenrir

the chain and challenged him to prove his strength against her. It's a little more

strong as it seems, said one, it is as well interwoven as the words

of a good poem, said another, but you, Fenrir, can break it.

The wolf looked at Gleipnir, this tape is so thin, he said, that it would not gain fame by

break it, looked at Gleipnir again, if on the other hand, cunning and magic have

formed then, I prefer that you stay it, they will not roll it in my legs.

In response to this, said a god, before you have destroyed the huge iron chain

and if by chance you can not break it, another said, we free you again; can

trust in us. Fenrir showed his teeth, to the gods

They did not like his appearance, if you can stop me, he growled,

It will be a long time before I can expect your help, I do not want to be tied

with this tape, but I also do not want to be accused of cowardice;

so while the others tie me, one of you put your hand in my mouth

as a sign of your good faith. Tyr looked one by one to all the gods of that

company; all the gods there looked at each other and not

they said nothing in the same way that all gods

to him, wondering what to do. Then Tyr slowly raised his arm

right and put his hand in Fenrir's mouth. Immediately the other gods

They tied Gleipnir around Fenrir's neck, body and legs, until all his

extension sold out. Fenrir began to fight against her, tried to patiar,

shrug, shake, shake, roll; but the more he threw, the more

tight it became Gleipnir. Then Fenrir growled and clenched his teeth. Tyr, the most

brave of the gods, he writhed and cried out unable to endure so much pain

the other gods laughed they knew that Fenrir was tied at last, except Tyr, the

only one who lost his hand. The gods tied the great chain

called Gelgja, until the end of the silk ribbon and a huge rock called Gjoll

and they definitely fixed it. The gods led the Gioll a kilometer and

halfway towards the earth, then they found the great Thviti rock and placed it on top of

Gjoll to hold her. Fenrir shook himself and fought, gritted his teeth, swallowed hard and

He opened his vastly blood-stained fauses.

Then one of the gods drew his sword and drove the point hard into the ceiling

from Fenrir's mouth and pressed the hilt against his lower jaw.

The wolf was gagged and bound. Their howls were terrible and the saliva,

it came out of its jaws. A long time after the great winter and the

to be the skies sunk in absolute darkness,

the earth shook violently the mountains fell, which allowed

that Fenrir, finally be released. He opened his snout in such a way that his

his jaw was digging the earth and the top of his bite consumed the

sky, devouring everything that was in the way.

Do not think that the end of the myth reaches here, do not despair, the end of the

Fenrir's story, I will narrate it in an upcoming video that will dust off the

Nordic apocalypse, that is, the so famous Ragnarok, and no, it does not look like anything

to the movie inspired by marvel. So stay tuned for the next

BREAKING!! ANOTHER PARDON!!! HILLARY'S BIGGEST ENEMY!! - Duration: 5:52.

BREAKING!!

ANOTHER PARDON!!!

HILLARY'S BIGGEST ENEMY!!

Few people have been as big of a thorn in the side of Democrats as Julian Assange.

He heads the organization Wikileaks that has the nasty habit of outing corruption whenever

it occurs in Washington and also around the world.

Assange has exposed corruption in almost every corner of the globe, influencing public opinion,

and by extension elections, including the 2016 Presidential election.

Assange has exposed emails from so many DNC members that it's a wonder they trust anything

to remain secret anymore.

One of the emails that he uncovered even exposed the Democrats that were trying to take him

out.

The leaks and hacks that have been so greatly appreciated by Americans have been, obviously,

hated by those that he is exposing.

For this reason, Assange has been on the run for quite some time.

Even though the information he distributes has been proven true time and again, the legality

of what he is doing is questionable at best.

Some say he's a whistleblower, and some say he's just a criminal.

But those who have nothing to hide also have nothing against him.

For that reason, President Trump is working to find a way for Assange to be free from

hiding out.

Neo Nettle reports that Assange might actually leave his asylum and reenter the real world,

thanks to President Trump:

"In the last few days, the wheels have been set in motion for Wikileaks founder Julian

Assange to finally be free from his asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London without

facing arrest.

Wikileaks has now acknowledged that Donald Trump's Administration had ended the US

Government's Grand Jury proceedings against the infamous whistleblower.

On Tuesday, WikiLeaks posted a tweet announcing the end of the eight-year-long grand jury

proceedings against Assange's organization.

The proceedings were expanded in 2017 to cover the WikiLeaks various 'Vault' releases

exposing the CIA's extreme public surveillance through advanced technology and hacking.

Anonymous White House leaker, QAnon, recently revealed that President Trump was preparing

to issue an official pardon for Assange, once he has helped him with extradition to Switzerland,

in return for information.

According to Infowars, the WikiLeaks tweet referenced a State Department press conference

held that day, Jan. 2, 2018, in which State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert made

a strong statement regarding freedom of speech that was couched in a reference to Iran.

The WikiLeaks tweet confirmed the State Department's reference to freedom of speech in Iran was

a coded communication intended to extend the umbrella of free speech and press rights to

WikiLeaks in a clear reversal of the policy in which both CIA Director Mike Pompeo and

Attorney General Sessions have argued that arresting Julian Assange is a priority.

It is not clear that Assange has violated national security laws, even if it can be

shown he published U.S. national security classified documents.

Specifically, Nauert said the following:

'We support a freedom of the press here in the United States.

We support the right of voices to be heard.

And when a nation clamps down on social media or websites or Google or news sites, we ask

the question, 'What are you afraid of?'

What are you afraid of?

We support the Iranian people and we support their voices being heard.'"

While the legality of what Assange's organization has been doing is questionable at best, when

it comes to legality, there's no doubt that what he has done has furthered the greater

good in a way that most of us could never have imagined doing.

It would be great if the world didn't need a Wikileaks and everyone just did the right

thing because it was the right thing.

However, they do not, and so accountability is a must.

At this point, President Trump is fighting for Assange's right to freedom, just as

hard as Obama was fighting to lock up the purveyor of truth.

"Trump's attorneys argue Assange's First Amendment right to publish

In a motion filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on Dec. 29, 2017,

in the case Roy Cockrum vs. Donald J. Trump for President, Trump's attorneys argued

that Julian Assange had a right under the First Amendment to publish the DNC and John

Podesta emails, even if the emails were stolen.

The case was orchestrated by Project Democracy, a group run by former attorneys from the Obama

administration, arguing that then former Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone had conspired

with the Russians to publish the DNC and Podesta emails.

In a 32-page motion defending the Trump Campaign, Michael A. Carvin of the Jones Day law firm

and attorney of record representing President Trump, argued that the Trump campaign, and

by inference Julian Assange at WikiLeaks, could not be held liable under the First Amendment

for a disclosure of stolen information if the information published involves "a matter

of public interest" and the speaker was not "involved" in the theft.

Technically, Assange has not yet been indicted of any criminal offense in the United States,

nor is it clear if he committed any crime.

Under the Supreme Court Decisions New York Times v. Sullivan, 376 U.S. 254 (1964), and

in the Pentagon Papers case, New York Times v. U.S. 403 U.S. 713 (1971), a journalist

is allowed to accept and publish classified documents provided by other sources"

It's time that the United States government encourage accountability instead of trying

to shut it up.

This is the type of environmnet that the Trump administration is attempting to foster, and

the same one that the Obama Administration tried to choke out at any cost.

What do you think about this?

Lest Liberty Perish: Joseph Pennell & World War I - Duration: 35:13.

>> From the Library of Congress in Washington DC.

>> But also, as you may know, this program is part of a series of webinars connected

with the Library's exhibition, Echo's of the Great War, American Experiences of World War I,

which is on view here through January, 2019.

Today's presentation will last approximately 30 minutes, with time after that

for our presenter to answer questions.

You can communicate with me and with Katherine Blood, our presenter by the Chadwell,

and unfortunately it looks like not with your [inaudible], as I said before we began,

you're welcome to send me a note and I'll share it out.

I'll collect questions as well for Katherine on the chat and we'll share them

with her at the end of the session.

So, please think about what you'd like to ask her as the session goes on.

We will post the recording of this presentation

to the Library's website once it has been captioned, and with that,

I will introduce Katherine, so today's presenter is curator Katherine Blood,

who works with the Library's world class collection of artists prints, drawings,

and posters in its Prints and Photographs Division.

And Katherine, that makes you the presenter now.

Her exhibition and publications projects have specialized in modern

to contemporary graphic art by American, Hispanic and Japanese artists.

Today's webinar is based on a public gallery talk that Katherine gave earlier this year

as part of our programing for the Echoes exhibit.

Katherine, thank you so much for leading today's webinar.

>> Thank you, Naomi and to everyone joining us today.

As Naomi mentioned, today's discussion is based

on a gallery talk I gave earlier this year focusing on one particular World War I drawing

by artist, Joseph Pennell, and we'll be looking closely at this in a minute,

but let's start by thinking a little bit about visual communication at the time.

When the U.S. entered the war on April 6, 1917,

there was a thriving visual culture in full swing.

For example, images were circulating widely in illustrated magazines and newspapers

and photography was well established by this time with more

and more people taking pictures with their own personal cameras.

But World War I marked another notable leap forward in the history of visual communication,

and this was thanks in large part to the extraordinary proliferation of war posters

and other images made by some of the best artists of the day, and also the volume

at which they were produced and ways they were disseminated.

On screen are some examples from the Library's extensive collection

and you can see they were tilted at getting audiences to feel,

respond and act or participate in various ways.

And while many of the images appeal to notions of patriotism, honor and courage,

others tap into fear and hatred of the enemy.

Some of the major recurring themes include recruitment,

like the first several examples here in the top row.

Also, bond drives to raise funds in support of the war, home front service and various forms

of troop support from knitting to donating books for soldier's camp libraries.

That's one of my favorites in the second row, the second one in, by Charles Buckles Falls.

And you can explore over 1,900 World War I posters in the Library's online catalog

and we'll show you where you can search for and study them in a little while.

Everything you'll see on screen today, with one exception that I'll point out,

comes from the Library's collection of original artist's prints,

posters, drawings and photographs.

Today we're going to be taking a deep look at an indelible and famous artwork

by American artist, Joseph Pennell.

The Library of Congress is fortunate to preserve both Pennell's concept drawing,

which we see on the left, and his related Liberty Bond poster of which

over 500,000 copies were printed in 1918.

We'll also take a look at some of the broader context and forces that came together

in launching a virtual armada of compelling wartime posters,

including this well-known example.

As a gateway for that discussion, here's how the drawing was presented

in the physical exhibition, the Echoes exhibition,

where it hung alongside some excellent company.

That's Cheryl Regan gazing up at the artwork.

She's our Echoes Exhibit Director, and let me also credit our lead curators for that show,

Ryan Reft and Sara Conway Lance [phonetic] who worked with a large team, including myself.

If you look at the wall behind Cheryl, you may spot some familiar faces,

and perhaps this one in particular.

James Montgomery Flagg's, "I want you for U.S. Army" with his truly iconic Uncle Sam based,

according to the artist, on his own face.

Both Pennell and Flagg were among the many artists to contribute their work

for the division of pictorial publicity

within Woodrow Wilson's Committee on Public Information.

It was this man, George Creel, who headed the committee.

He was a journalist and politician who believed that art could play a crucial role

in winning the hearts and minds of the American public, to build support behind the war.

And his idea was that whereas people might miss or bypass text or films or community meetings,

even the most indifferent eye, and that's his phrase,

even the most indifferent eye could not fail to encounter posters and billboards.

In his project memoir called, "How we advertised in American," Creel stressed that he was

after no less than the very best work by the best artists and in his words,

"Posters into which the masters of the pen

and brush have poured heart and soul, as well as genius."

And he continues, "Looking the field over, we decided upon Charles Dana Gibson

as the man best fitted to lead the army of artists."

I like that he thought of them as an army.

"And on April 17, 1917, this splendid American entered the service as a volunteer."

So that would have been just a little over a week after America entered the war on April 6.

And Creel made a very savvy choice when he tapped Charles Dana Gibson

to run the committee's Division of Pictorial Publicity.

Gibson was a very popular leading and well-connected illustrator,

celebrated for his creation of the Gibson Girl,

and you can see a classic example of that, top left.

As president of the Society of American Illustrators, Gibson was well placed

to rally the troops, the artists troops, and when he famously urged his fellow artists

to draw till it hurts, in support of the war, he was talking to such peers

as James Montgomery Flagg, Howard Chandler Christy,

Edward Penfield, Joseph Pennell and many others.

By January of 1918, Gibson reported that the artists were meeting every Friday

at their New York headquarters on 5th Avenue to review projects submitted

by different government departments.

Afterwards, Gibson said they adjourned to Key's Chop House for dinner.

The ranks swelled to 300 volunteer artists who produced more

than 1,400 designs including some 700 posters that were spread throughout the country,

and they were everywhere, on the streets, in offices, schools, theaters, libraries,

street cars, shop windows and other public spaces.

So, in the flow of your daily life, you would have inevitably encountered these images.

And we have some great period photo documentation of the posters in situ,

like the image we were just looking at of the billboard on the street

and the scene from a naval recruiting office.

And just look at all of the posters plastered on the surrounding walls.

Many of these are represented in the Library as collection of original World War I posters

and if you'll just take a second and kind of memorize those back walls and hold those images

in your mind, I'll show you a few closer color images of the posters from our collection,

including Howard Chandler Christy's classic GI, "Wish I were a man, I'd join the Navy."

When Pennell joined the Division of Pictorial Publicity as an associated chairman,

he was about 60 years old, so a mature, successful artist, who like Gibson and Flagg,

had helped to find what would be known as the golden age of illustration.

From the 1880's to the 1920's and this is square during Pennell's active years.

He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1857 and he trained at the Pennsylvania Academy

of Fine Arts, and the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art.

He later taught at the National Academy of Design

and the Art Students League in New York City.

Pennell died in Brooklyn, New York in 1926.

This pictorials' style portrait shows him in 1922 when he was in his mid-60's.

During his long career, Pennell gained acclaim for his work as an illustrator and print maker.

He published treatises about drawing and print making

and taught, lectured and exhibited widely.

He was a prolific illustrator of journal articles and books by the likes of Henry James,

Washington Irving and William Dean Howells.

On screen is one of the drawings he made for Henry James' 1909 book, Italian Hours.

Pennell and his journalist wife, Elizabeth Robbins Pennell often collaborated together.

She would do the writing and he would illustrate and they were also devotees,

friends and biographers of James McNeill Whistler.

Early on, as you can see in this drawing,

Pennell's work shows the clear influence of Whistler.

This is an early portrait drawing by Pennell of his wife in Rome in 1885.

But Pennell liked to live in high rise apartments with sweeping views

where Pennell could make drawings

like the delicate watercolor you see here called the, Out of my London Window.

Pennell is also one of the early artists to depict skyscrapers

as fine art subjects beginning around 1904, and here's his drawing of the Flat Iron building

in 1908, only six years after it was built.

This opalescent sunset watercolor on the right shows the stunning view

from their Brooklyn home.

They made the move from Philadelphia to Brooklyn in 1921.

And you may be able to see a bit sketchily in the distance on the left,

there's the Statue of Liberty under the clouds.

Pennell is often called the dean of American print making

and he was a skillful accomplished lithographer and etcher, who had a lifelong fascination

with industrial subjects, a theme he called the Wonder of Work.

And by this he meant pictures of architecture, engineering,

construction, all kinds of industry.

He found these subjects profoundly compelling and became gifted at presenting them

as picturesque, an idea that was traditionally associated with artist renderings with nature,

and beautiful landscapes rather than urban cityscapes.

So, we see a Chicago skyline, the standard oil building in New York, and a dramatic rendering

of a grain elevator in Hamburg, Germany.

This lithograph is from Pennell's celebrated series documenting the construction

of the Panama Canal.

And images of people are somewhat rare in his work, and usually in service

to the larger composition to indicate scale or bustling activity.

Though Pennell considered this grouping of workers particularly decorative.

It was based on an eye witness moment.

When the Panama Pacific International Exhibition was mounted in 1915 to celebrate the opening

of the Panama Canal, Pennell shared a juried exhibition of over 2,000 prints

and he had a room dedicated to some 150 of his own.

And here he is looking very intrepid at the construction site

and that little sign is basically saying that you walk here at your own peril.

And here are a couple more images showing Pennell in action.

These were both taken at the Chicago Stockyards around 1918.

One shows Pennell surrounded by a crowd near what looks like a warehouse

and the other he's sitting on the balcony and he seems to have had a sketchbook with him always,

many portraits of him showing him clutching a sketchbook.

Our collection also has many examples of his sketchbooks.

By the time Pennell came to the Division of Pictorial Publicity in 1917,

he had already built strong credentials and a solid body

of artworks documenting war preparation in England,

which was his home base with his wife for many years.

On screen from left to right are lithographs from his series of war work in England,

first in England, then in America.

It's fascinating to know that Pennell was raised as a Quaker and was personally opposed to war,

but for his ongoing exploration of his wonder of work theme,

the chance to document war preparation was the opportunity

of a lifetime, it was irresistible to him.

With government backing in both England and America, Pennell was granted special access

to sensitive sites including shipyards and ammunition factories.

And here's a close-up detail of the Censor Stamp from the [inaudible]

of Pennell's submarine in drydock.

The stamp is on the left showing that the artwork had passed scrutiny

by the Philadelphia Navy yard sensor on November 7, 1917,

and that Pennell was not giving away any state secrets by distributing this image.

Pennell was vocal, he made no bones about the tension between a boring war

and being enthralled by its technology and scale.

Pennell's wartime artworks were exhibited at multiple venues including the Brooklyn Museum

in 1917, where the accompanying catalog boasted introductions by H.G Wells and Pennell.

And here are quotes from both.

To me, I think Wells really reflected the work well and understood what Pennell was after.

The full quote is on screen, but I'll just read the last bit, this is on the right.

"He gives us the splendors and immensities of forge and gun-pit, furnace and mine-shaft.

He shows you how great they are and how terrible."

And for his part, Pennell's quote on the left expresses his ambivalence.

He wrote, "It is the working of the great machinery and the great mills which I find

so inspiring, so impressive, and if only the engines turned out were engines of peace,

how much better would the world be?"

Now, this is the first of two Liberty-Loan posters Pennell designed.

This one was for the third Liberty-Loan, the Washington Post and the New York Times

on March 10, 1918 both published articles that reported a planned 9 million posters were

to be designed and distributed by various artists and they would be distributed

in the U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Cuba, The Philippines and France.

There were four Liberty Bond drives that by the end of the war had raised more than $17 million,

and that was just an unheard-of figure at the time.

And here's an extraordinary statistic, out of an estimated 24 million households at the time,

some 20 million individuals bought Liberty War Bonds.

This poster is a classic example of Pennell's work, which typically combined a documentary

with a picturesque, but still friendly based and eye witnessed observation.

His next in line, for the fourth Liberty-Loan poster was an entirely different animal

and a real departure for Pennell.

It depicts a horrific scene with the Statue of Liberty in ruins and New York City

in flames while under attack by enemy planes.

His idea was to show, "New York City bombed, shot down, burning, blown up by an enemy.

A fleet of airplanes fly over lower Manhattan,

flames and smoke envelope the burning skyscrapers.

In the foreground, Liberty from a pile of ruins rises headless

on her pedestal, her torch shattered."

So, it's a little difficult to see the planes unless you're in the presence

of the original drawing, though they are clearly visible in the print poster

and here are details from both the drawing up top.

The planes in sort of faint light-blue are marked by the blue arrow

and I hope you can see them, descending down diagonally toward the left.

The poster detailed below, they are much clearer.

Within the conflagration, other details emerge including a submarine heading toward the city

skyline with a sagging bridge in the distance and poor Liberty's disembodied head nearby.

We also see sunken or sinking ships with the American flag beginning to go underwater.

The lower margin of the drawing shows Pennell's title and signature, indicates his dual role

as draftsman and printmaker and is annotated in his hand watercolor sketch of idea.

But the actual spark came earlier.

Pennell gave a detailed account of the project

in his 1918 book called Joseph Pennell's Liberty-Loan Poster,

and in it he describes making the initial sketch pictured on the left as reproduced

from this book while riding the train back from a New York meeting

of the Committee on Public Information.

And you can see he's laid in some color indications like red in the sky.

Once he arrived home in Philadelphia, Pennell made another drawing, which he then worked

up into a lithographic print and this is the image that you see here on the right.

And Pennell wrote that this is the design he submitted successfully for jury selection.

News coverage of the time reported that Pennell's was one of 10 artist designs chosen

and that 10 million posters would be printed all together.

Over 500,000 copies were to be made of Pennell's poster alone.

The Library's collection includes some 30 examples of Pennell's working materials

for the poster and so far, that initial train sketch on the left, which I've reproduced

from the book I mentioned, has not been located in a collection.

I'm holding out hope and if anyone runs across it, please let us know.

We do have the drawing and resulting lithograph shown on the right.

We also have this sketchbook.

It's small, it's a little sketchbook in which Pennell is apparently trying out titles

and the wording he later settled on was, his idea was to say, now remember the scene

of conflagration, "Buy Liberty Bonds or you will see this."

So, this was later softened to a more poetic alternative

for the printed color poster, as we'll see.

Based on the available evidence and in studying the original artworks themselves,

the sequence starts in black and white with the train sketch first,

followed by the worked-up drawing and lithograph and then on to full color.

On the far left is a proof of the black and white lithograph

with lavish watercolor added by hand.

It looks like a drawing almost.

Next is Pennell's full-scale watercolor drawing for which the title differed somewhat

from the final posters so, "Lest Liberty Parish From The Face Of The Earth," became,

"That Liberty Shall Not Parish From the Earth, Buy Liberty Bonds."

Furthermore, and far less well known, Pennell explored a similar concept

in his second drawing dated July 4, 1918, which moves the venue from New York to Philadelphia.

The drawings are a comparable size and made in similar style

and color palate, and similar media.

The violence in my eyes is intensified by adding a terrified crowd running in front

of Independence Hall and a prone figure bleeding in the foreground.

I've not found much in the way of discussion or explanation for this Philadelphia version,

but both drawings are listed in the unpublished Catalogue Raisonne of Pennell's drawings

and paintings by Louis A. Wuerth, under the heading, "War Poster Drawings."

As I've mentioned, these phantasmagorical images were extremely unusable for Pennell,

very specific to their purpose in time.

There is a well-known story about a meeting of the National Arts Club in 1920,

not long after the war, during which Pennell took artist,

George Bellows to task on the issue of authenticity.

He singled out Bellows amid showing the execution of British Red Cross nurse,

Edith Cavell, who helped allied prisoners escape during the war,

saying that the work would be much more compelling and truly authentic

if Bellows had seen the event with his own eyes.

Bellows rejoinder was that it was true, he had not seen the event, but nor, as far as he knew,

had Leonardo been present at the Last Supper.

On screen is Bellow's dramatic lithograph and he also made a large-scale painting

which envisions an angelic Edith Cavell descending a staircase while a firing squad

waits in the shadows below at the lower right corner.

And of course, this argument, Pennell's argument becomes somewhat ironic in light

of the Liberty Bond poster designs we have been looking at.

But there is certainly an anomaly in Pennell's broader body of work.

Right up until his death in 1926, Pennell continued making prints and drawings based

on eye witness observation and reflecting a changing world.

During this late period, he made a series of beautiful watercolor drawings,

you saw this one earlier and it's another one of my very favorites.

But he made hundreds of them and they're incredibly beautiful.

He seems to have been making them really for his own pleasure.

And they're capturing, many of them, the changing light, weather and activity

on the East River, which he could see from his Brooklyn apartment high point.

And as the Bellows' story suggests, I think it must be said that anyone

who said he's Pennell [inaudible] will bump up against his notoriously argumentative,

difficult and sometimes [inaudible] nature.

And this was remarkable enough that it is mentioned in his obituaries,

along with long lists of honors and achievements including his tireless, passionate,

constant advocacy of art and artists.

Pennell really gave his life to this and he left his entire estate to the Library of Congress.

So, we have an extraordinary opportunity to study a virtually complete collection

of his lithographs and etchings, about 1,900 altogether, about 4,000 of his drawings,

his publications and papers, along with his wife's, their substantial collection

of James McNeill Whistler art papers and [inaudible]

and Elizabeth Robbins Pennell's rare cookbook collection and we also have the Pennell library.

And as we've seen, Pennell's artwork reflects how he moved through history and art history

in ways that uniquely reflect the first World War, as well as the construction

of the Panama Canal, the rise of American cities and other key subjects.

So, we would like to leave you with some resources beginning with the exhibition website

for our current show, Echoes of the Great War,

and also the art centric exhibition I recently co-curated with my colleagues,

Sara Duke and Betsy Nahum-Miller, it's called, World War I -

American Artists View the Great War.

All of the exhibits, texts and images are online via the link screen, www.loc.gov/exhibits.

And here's.

Oh, I'm skipping ahead.

You can also explore over 1,900 digitized World War I posters, as we mentioned,

in our online catalog at this direct link.

And of course, in person in the Library of Congress,

Prints and Photographs Division reading room.

Here's a select bibliography of resources including Creel's book about the Committee

on Public Information which I found very valuable during World War I,

and some key resources for studying Pennell on his prints and drawings,

which are also searchable in the Library's online catalog at www.loc.gov/pictures,

and available for study, of course, in our reading room,

along with over 76,000 photographs, prints, and drawings related to World War I.

You can also send us reference questions at this ask a librarian link on screen.

So, thank you so much for joining us today, and I'll hand things back

to Naomi before we take questions.

>> Great, thanks so much Katherine, really beautiful and fascinating work.

We'd love to have you guys share some questions that Katherine can answer if you have them,

but before, well while we wait for your questions, I have one myself, which is, so,

you mentioned that Pennell offered the Library his entire estate,

can you talk more about his relationship with the Library of Congress

and why did he choose to have his work kept here?

>> So, our best clue comes from his wife's biography of her husband, The Life and Letters

of Joseph Pennell, and it turns out that their estate was headed to the New York Public Library

which also is a very wonderful home.

But according to Elizabeth Robbins Pennell, after seeing the Library's print room,

Pennell decided he considered it the finest anywhere, this is Pennell, the finest anywhere,

and still somewhat in need of more fine print, so he saw a need

and around 1917 he made a new will in favor of the Library and she wrote that,

according to his wife, Pennell liked the idea of placing his legacy

in the Nation's Capital and in the National Institution.

So, that's the short answer.

>> Thanks.

Again, let us know if you have questions, but I'll ask one more, which is that, you know,

could you talk a little bit more about the Liberty Bond Drive,

I'm not sure if you shared the statistic that you and I talked about,

about the number of households in the U.S. as compared to how many participated

in the bond drive, but if you haven't, it'd be great to say or to reiterate if you did,

and then also tell us a little bit more about that, about the drive?

>> Well so, let me just sort of give the basic sort of definition, which is that,

so they were essentially, so by buying a war bond,

it meant that you were essentially loaning money to the U.S. Government in support of the war,

with the funds to be returned at a later date, and this was framed as a patriotic duty

for every citizen from children to millionaires, everyone was expected to step up.

The bonds were sold in denominations going as low as $50, and you could also buy stamps

for just $.25 and buyers were given buttons, sort of, I think of them sort of like our

"I voted" stickers today, to show participation and encourage others to join in.

And let's see, the program was initiated by Treasury Secretary William McAdoo,

and the bonds were promoted by major celebrities of the day, like Charlie Chaplin

and Mary Pickford, and that statistic is really incredible.

So, altogether they had raised more than $17 million for the Liberty Bond drive by the end

of the war, and out of it, an estimated 24 million households at that time,

some 20 million individuals bought Liberty War Bonds, so wildly successful campaign.

>> Alright, thank you.

So, I haven't seen any other questions, so I guess we'll close out today's session.

I do want to remind everyone that this is part of the series.

There will be one more of these webinars on World War I.

Oh, we do have a question, from Tim Garrity.

So, he says, how does Pennell's work compare with the work of other World War I era artists

in other nations like Britain, Germany, France and Russia?

Are there major differences?

>> So, I think that you can compare Pennell's work to a British artist like Muirhead Bone.

I think his work is sort of representative, picturesque,

something that had fellow comparisons in Europe and certainly in England, and of course,

although he felt very much an American, he spent a lot of time

in Britain, was also an anglophile.

So, I can mention a few of the British artists, I mentioned Muirhead Bone, James McBey,

and also an extremely influential artist who worked with the British government,

Dutch artist, Louis Raemaekers, whose images illustrated the Bryce report,

of reported German atrocities.

So, that's a great question.

I could go on, but that's an essential answer.

>> OK great.

So, another question, this is from Ruth.

She says, you pointed to the departure from Pennell's typical style

that left Liberty parish departure from his typical style, so can you talk a little bit more

about why he made that departure?

>> So, I would love to know why, and I've looked for clues in his letters

and I've looked for, I mean, I don't know why.

I think that he was responding to something very specific, very,

if I'm allowed to conjecture a little bit, I think a lot about this sort of tension

between his being a pacifist and his being so engaged and compelled by the technology of war,

I know he was distressed, disturbed, you know, so he just chose a very, what's the word I want,

I don't, histrionic isn't the word I groping for, but it's an extreme,

it's an extreme response, and there are other comparable posters in our collection,

on that very first slide that I showed, there's a poster by John Norton, "Keep these off USA",

which shows a bloody German soldier boot.

So, it's one, it's one, it's a tone that's used by more than one artist, to sort of show the,

show how vital it was to be engaged in these Liberty-Loan bond drives in no uncertain terms.

>> Alright, well one last comment that may lead to a question, actually.

So, Jerry said that the poster depicting the young woman in the Navy uniform was still in use

by the Navy when I was in the service in the 70's.

>> Oh wow.

>> Which is interesting, but it also makes me wonder if you might speak a little bit

about the legacy either of some of the images to come out of the Committee on Public Information

in World War I or just a bit about the growth of marketing after the war as a result,

what's the legacy of these images and effort around them?

>> So, there's a really great example to sort of site in answering that question.

James Montgomery Flagg's Uncle Sam, I want you for the U.S. Army, was repurposed.

It was so powerful it was repurposed during World War II and if you go

to our online catalog you can see the different versions,

and one of them also includes a portrait of FDR, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

So, I think what happened was the World War I posters, the division of pictorial publicity,

this extraordinary phenomenon which was even considered by artists and critics at the time,

there was a self-awareness that something special was going on,

that something new was happening and that they were moving the equation forward

and opening the door, and I think it was one in a series of information revolutions.

I think you could look at it that way, that really things were moved forward in a way

that opened the door for the future.

>> Alright, well thanks for that, and thank you for this wonderful presentation.

So, I'll wrap up with a few notes.

One is that, as I was saying earlier, this is part of a series,

and so we'll have one more webinar that will be on December 12 at 2:00 eastern.

The exhibition co-curator, Ryan Reft

of the Manuscript Division will discuss Charles Hamilton Houston's wartime service,

and experiences as a young officer serving in a segregated military, and the influences

of those experiences on his later work in civil rights including as the chief attorney

for the NAACP and a mentor to Thurgood Marshall.

This also was previously a gallery talk and like Katherine's, a wonderful one,

so I hope you'll join us for the last of our webinar series.

Today, as you may know, is Giving Tuesday, so in that spirit, I'd like to just share that some

of our programs here are made possible by donations and gifts from generous citizens,

so the Library of Congress has introduced a new initiative that is called,

"To Spark a Lifelong Adventure of Learning."

If you'd like to learn more or support this effort, you can go to loc.gov/donate.

And finally, we'd love to know what you thought of today's session.

If you can share your comments on the survey, we'd very much appreciate it.

And, if you have a question, oh, thank you.

We appreciate your participation in the webinar today, and again you'll find the recording

on the World War I Exhibition website

and also the Library's YouTube channel once it has been properly captioned,

which should be in a few weeks.

So, thank you all so much for participating.

>> Thank you.

Top of The TBR 2018 [CC] | The Book Life - Duration: 5:02.

Hey guys it's Sarah Jane welcome back to my channel today I'm going to talk to

you guys about the books on my shelves that I'm most excited to get to in 2018.

So I got the idea for this video from Joce from Squibblesreads I will link

her channel down below I absolutely adore Joss I had no idea about her

channel until the most recent round of Tome Topple when she came on as a host

and I absolutely adore her channel so please go check her out. She reads a

really wide range of books if you're looking for something new

check her out. So this video is a little bit different to my anticipated reads

video you will find a link down below this is a video where I'm talking to you

guys all about the books that I'm really excited to read I already have. So

without further ado here's my list I would absolutely love it if you guys let

me know it which ones you think I should get to first. I will add that some of

these books you won't have seen yet because I haven't actually got around to

filming my latest book haul. So the first book I'm really excited to get to is

forest of a thousand lanterns by Julie C Dao. One question one choice reigns

above all others is the price of the throne too high. I'm sold I'm sold.

This is a fantasy book it's a retelling of the Evil Queen and I'm just really

really excited because it sounds like a really great like villain origin story

and I'm just really really excited to read it. I'm really excited to read this

book because it's a different kind of fairy tale retelling so I'm very very

excited. Another book that I would really love to get to in the new year is Nevernight

by Jay Kristoff. Destined to destroy empires Mia is only 10

years old when she's given her first lesson in death. The red church is no

ordinary school but Mia is no ordinary student the shadows love her and they

drink her fear. This book sounds absolutely epic and I'd heard a little

bit about this book but I was really sold on it when I watched Catriona from

Little Book Owl talk about it and I'm just so excited to get to it. Can't wait!

The next book I'm super excited to read is the Falconer by

Elizabeth May. This story is set in Edinburgh in 1844 and it follows a

protagonist who seems to be leading the life of a lady and actually she's a Fae

hunter. She has brains charm wealth and a title

and drop dead beauty, but she only looks the part of an aristocratic young lady

she's actually leading a double life she has the rare ability to sense the... can't

pronounce that word, but the Fae race obsessed with slaughtering humans. Now I

know what you're thinking, Sarah Jane can you really handle your precious Fae

being slaughtered and yes. I can. The thing is while I love

the Fae I'm getting a bit sick of the same old same old so I'm really excited

to read this I've heard mixed things because I know Sian from readerarambles...

I don't know if she read it or if she just started it because Sian has this

habit of like starting books and then DNFing them but she wasn't really sold

on it so I'm keen to know what I will think. I think I said keem not keen but I

meant keen. Another book that I'm really excited to get to which has been on my

TBR for a very long time is the Raven king by Maggie Stiefvater. I really

really really need to read this I remember being at YALC in 2016 and I

really wanted to read this before I met Maggie Stiefvater.

so I took it to YALC with me and it didn't happen so then I just decided not

to pick it up which is totally ridiculous I need to finish this series

I know I really want to I just haven't got around to it so 2018 is going to be

the year of the Raven king. Another book that I'm very very very excited to read

is one dark throne by Kendare Blake. I've been anticipating this book for a long

time and let me tell you I absolutely love Three Dark Crowns and I wanted

this book so bad but I just haven't read it yet.

I had it pre-ordered it arrived the day it came out but I just haven't had a

chance to pick it up yet well I have I've just picked up other things, but in 2018

I will be reading this Katherine for Queen just sayin team Katherine. Another

book that I'm really really excited to pick up is the Bitter Kingdom by Rae

Carson. This is the final book in the girl of fire and thorns trilogy I read

the first two books last year and I really really loved them I didn't love

them as much as a lot of other people seem to love them but I did really

really enjoy the story and I'm desperate to finish it.

My brain has gone completely dead and I can't actually really remember what this

series is even about. And the final book that I'm really really really really

really excited to read in 2018 is web of lies by Jennifer Estep. She might look

good but she's all bad. This is the second book in the elemental assassin

series this is an urban fantasy series and I really enjoyed the first book I

didn't really think much of it when I read it I was very much like I enjoyed

this but I don't know how I feel but I'm just so desperate to carry on with it

because Gin is badass she's a badass assassin and this was

just like comfort food when you love urban fantasy when you find an urban

fantasy series that you feel like you can just you know eat up it's just great

and haven't a really loved urban fantasy for a

long time so I definitely definitely want to continue on and read this in

2018. So those are the books that I need to get to in 2018 that I already have on my

shelves have you got anything you need to get to that has been on you a TBR for

a while let me know in the comments down below and if you haven't subscribed to

my channel and you would like to you that would absolutely make my day just

click the subscribe button and then click the little bell so that you know

when I upload. Thank you so much for watching and I'll see you guys soon!

Bye!

How to Create an At-Home Cleanse for Cheap - Duration: 2:55.

Hey, y'all it's your girl Haley.

I'm the girl behind Brewing Happiness, which is a health and happiness website dedicated to recipes for all

definitions of health. Today, I am bringing you a two day cleanse/detox

on the cheap. January is a time for sort of getting back on the health train.

There's totally a way to detox your body at home, and you don't have to spend a lot of money to do it.

So I've broken down sort of like what it means to detox and what the steps are to that and then I have a full

meal guide in the article below. Or you can sort of tailor your own detox at home

just following these few rules. So the first rule to detoxing your body is to cut out the three biggest

inflammatories for your gut and those are gluten, dairy and sugar. These are all

three like very highly processed foods that tend to

erode the lining of your stomach and that can cause a lot of

digestive issues. So cutting those three things out is your number one thing. The second detox

step is to do one of two things. Either you can cut out caffeine, but if you don't want to do that

definitely eat breakfast before you drink caffeine.

It's gonna help stabilize your blood sugar. The third step for the detox is to up your healthy fats.

That's like avocados, almonds, coconut milk

I mean there's tons of healthy fats in the world

But those are three really good ones and those are three that definitely will show up in the meal plan that I have suggested.

Upping your healthy fats really helps to

Stabilize your blood sugar and keep you full longer. This is not a diet

This is simply a meal plan to sort of help your body feel its best. Step 4 is to add in

ferments to help heal the lining of your stomach. So if you don't know what ferments, are they're just fermented food so that can be

kimchi, it could be sauerkraut or apple cider vinegar, kombucha things like that the fifth step to this detox is to up your

leafy green consumption by a ton. This will help sort of cleanse your body so you can get magnesium

you can get folate. You can get potassium

Iron all of those nutrients are gonna

get like soaked into your body especially if you're if the lining of your stomach is feeling really happy and

healthy. The recipes that I've provided have a ton of different kinds of greens in them.

So it makes it really easy to

Do that you don't have to think about it too hard.

So you can either follow my meal plan or you can sort of follow these five steps

and make a detox of your own at home that will leave you feeling so good for January.

Hopefully sort of purify all that

holiday sugar out of you. As always follow along @brewinghappiness on all social media platforms

that's where I share all of my new recipes and

Behind the scenes things so follow along there, and I will see you guys next time. Bye!

Top 10 Rarest Viruses Found In Humans - Part 2 - Duration: 6:46.

Hello friends, I know a lot of you have an obsession with sciencey things and youre in

for a treat.

Today, were gonna be taking a look at some viruses that are quite hard to come by these

days - youll be glad they are when you hear about the horrible symptoms they can cause

- my name is Danny Burke and this is the top 10 rarest viruses found in humans part 2.

Coming in at the number 10 spot we have Hantavirus.

This virus usually begins in rodents and is often transmitted to humans through mice feces.

So if you didnt know already, stay away from mouse poo.

It first gained attention in 1993 when a healthy Naitive American man in the US died from the

virus just a few days after saying he had a shortness of breath.

Since then, 600 people have died from it in the US - so its pretty rare.

However, there have been reports from South America of the virus being transmitted from

human to human - so perhaps staying away from mice feces isnt enough anymore …

Next up at number 9 we have Rabies.

Now, I know what youre thinking, Rabies?

Ive heard of Rabies?

Thats not rare!

Well its a lot a rarer than it used to be.

The viral disease causes and inflammation in the brains of mammals.

Its spread to humans when an infected animal scratches or bites them although saliva can

also transmit it too.

The most common infections in humans come from dogs and bats.

Rabies kills about 17,000 people a year but 95% of those occur in Africa and Asia.

Thanks to vaccination and prevention programmes around the world, more and more countries

are become rabies free.

At the number 8 spot we have Hepatitus A. This is caused by the Hepatitus A virus.

Symptoms last 8 weeks and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, fever and abdominal

pain.

These symptoms affect about 1.4 million people a year which isnt that much compared to how

bad it used to be.

For examples, in the US alone, the number of cases dropped from 117 thousand a year

to just 11 thousand in 2013.

There is still work to be done in developing countries though.

Next up at number 7 we have Smallpox.

In the 20th century alone, Smallpox killed 300 million people.

Its been one of the deadliest viruses humanity has ever known.

Thanks to a massive international effort, the World Health Organization declared that

smallpox had been eradicated in 1979.

Since then, not a single person has died from it.

However, there are still two samples of the virus left - one is held by the US and one

by Russia.

The purpose is to study them in a safe laboratory.

This makes it an extremely rare virus - although its thought that Iraq, North Korea and France

also have their own samples …

Coming in att number 6 now we have the Lassa Virus.

This one is carried by a species of rat in West Africa.

However, its also airborne which means people get infected just being around rats fecal

matter.

Its pretty lethal, with a 15-20% mortality rate, causing about 5000 deaths a year in

west africa.

Symptoms include fever, chest pain, facial swelling, bleeding and even deafness.

Researchers are looking to eradicate this virus with drugs that tackle the early stages

of infection …

At number 5 now we have Rubella.

This virus is highly contagious and its symptoms are most brutal in fetuses during a mothers

pregnancy.

A fetus with Rubella can develop deafness, blindness and severe brain damage.

In adults its usually just a skin rash and cold like symptoms.

An outbreak in the US in the 60s caused 11,250 abortions, 2,100 stillborns and 20,000 babies

born with defects.

In 2015, Rubella was declared eliminated from the Americas although it still affects 120,000

children a year in the rest of the world.

Next up at number 4 we have Polio.

Historically, this virus has been a global problem, affection millions of people over

the years.

It doesnt cause any visible symptoms in most people but in 1% of cases it leaves sufferers

with permanent physical disabilities.

Of those people, about 5 - 10% of them die when the muscles involved in breathing stop

working.

Since 1988, cases of Polio have dropped 99% and just 3 countries, Nigeria, Pakistan and

Afghanistan, still report cases of the virus.

Coming in at number 3 we now we have Mumps.

This virus causes a contagious diseae that causes the salivary glands in your cheeks

and jaw to swell up.

Symptoms included headaches, muscle aches, fatigue and loss of appetite.

Sometimes, it can cause more serious problems such as a swelling of the brain.

Right up to the 1960s, this was a serious problem in countries such as the US - an outbreak

in 1964 affected over 212,000 people.

Today though, thanks to vaccinations, Mumps affects just a few thousand people in the

US with other countries reporting similar rates.

At the number 2 spot now we have Hepatitis B. As you might expect from the name, the

hepatitis B virus is related to the hepatitis A virus.

It causes a quick sickness involving vomiting, yellow skin, tiredness, dark urine and abdominal

pain.

Its transmitted via infected blood or other bodily fluids.

Thanks to a vaccination that became available in 1982, the virus has become a lot rarer

than it used to be although it still kills over 750,000 people worldwide every year.

And finally at number 1 we have the Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever.

This is pretty deadly virus with outbreaks seeing a 40% fatality rate.

Its transmitted to humans through bites from ticks that have previously bitten infected

animals.

It can also be transmitted from human to human through blood.

Symptoms include fever, muscle ache, dizziness, neck pain, headaches and sensitivity to light.

The virus still affects many people across Africa and Asia but is limited in where it

can travel because of the ticks it needs for transmission.

Its frequency drops sharply the further north you go.

Will we ever be able to stop viruses altogether like we did with Smallpox?

Maybe.

Some people think that viruses will always adapt and its a war we simply cant win.

Im optimistic though.

What do you guys think?

What do you want to see next on the channel?

My name is Danny Burke, thanks as always for watching and Ill see you all in the next video

Blender Tutorial - Creating BB8 (Modeling) P1 - Duration: 15:02.

hello everybody and welcome back to another blender made easy tutorial today

we're going to be creating BB8 in blender as you can see in the render on

screen right now I'm gonna be showing you how to model bb-8 I'm gonna show you

how to texture it and then final render it out let's first start off by going to

the modifier section and go add modifier subdivision surface I should also turn

on my screencast keys for you guys there you go okay so with the

subdivision surface we're gonna turn all the view and the render to six now the

reason we're using a cube instead of like a UV sphere is because it'll be a

lot easier to UV unwrap later I have already created a texture for the UV map

so all you have to do is go into edit mode click you and smart UV protection

but don't worry about that right now in this video we're going to be actually

just modeling so once you've done that click smooth shading on the toolbar and

then you can press T to close that off okay so go into front view and then

press 5 to go on the orthographic view now it would be kind of hard to model it

by hand without a reference image so all you have to do is go to google and type

in bb-8 blueprint and you'll find all these different images that you can use

I personally like this one right here I think it looks pretty good

so you can just right click save image as and then open it up in a background

image in blender so over here you can press N and open up in the properties

panel scroll down to background images check that box and then go add image

click open and then navigate to where you saved it at mine is right here this

one once you've done that we can now start modeling and positioning so I'm

gonna move the cube over here and then scale it up probably around there looks

pretty good alright so once we've done that we can now start modeling the head

you can also press end to close off the panel so we have a little bit more room

press Shift Day we're gonna add in a mesh in then UV sphere delete half of

this UV sphere by going into edit mode make sure you're in wireframe by

pressing Z press a to deselect everything and then box select this

bottom bit and then press X vertices once you've done that we can now

position it so move it over here into place scale

down a little bit and then position it right around here oh right that looks

good now what we need to do is scale it along the X and the y but not the Z to

do this you can press s shift Z and that will go along the two axis just like

that and then maybe along the Z as well just a tiny bit and then drag it up

right around there looks pretty good you can go into edit mode box like that part

press s and just scale it inwards maybe scale the whole thing down just a tiny

bit you just want to get it roughly the size it doesn't really matter because

it's not too noticeable but probably around there looks good then you can

kind of take a step back and look at it that looks decent all right let's go

back into edit mode now with this bottom vertice row selected you can press e to

extrude and then Z and bring it down then you can go into wireframe and scale

it inwards until it's like the size of this bottom bit right here on the

reference image so probably we're on there looks good maybe I'll drag it up

then you can press F to fill in a face perfect okay so that looks pretty good

let's add in a subdivision surface to smooth out the head so go add modifier

subdivision surface not not solidify subdivision surface and you can bring

both of these up too to hit smooth shading on that as well then go into

edit mode I want this row to be a little bit sharper so I'm gonna hit ctrl R add

a loop cut right here and drag it up then I'll add a loop cut on this part

and drag this down so if we go out of any mode you can see that that's now a

sharp edge I think this one is a little too close so I'll drag that back there

we go that looks good and then I'll just go one more loop cut and drag that in so

this edge is now sharp perfect let's go in the front of you and see how that

looks not too bad what I might do is go into edit mode on it and just scale out

these rows of vertices just so it's a little bit more round so you can alt

right click on any row and that will grab the loop so alt right click on this

one and just scale it out just a tiny bit maybe I'll do the same for this one

just got out a tiny bit maybe this one up here there

we go I think that looks just a little bit better perfect alright so we have

the head and now the body let's do the antennas and then at the end we'll focus

on the eyes and then this little like knob sort of thing so for the antenna it

looks like this one is a cylinder and then this one is a cube so we'll do that

let's click right here press shift a we'll go to mesh and then cylinder I'll

scale this down I'll probably position it right around here and then I'll scale

it along the z-axis until it's the right size there we go go into edit mode I'll

select that top bit extrude by hitting II right-click and scale out then I'll

extrude one more time there we go I might want to scale this a

little bit down so it's more defined so I'll just all right click that s shift

to Z and scale that inwards there we go that looks pretty good for this one I'm

going to be using a cube so just press shift a we'll go to mesh and then cute

scale that down and then position it right where you want it to be so

probably here scale it along the Z right there and make sure this part is down so

it's like inside the head then right click on this face extrude right click

and scale inwards and then extrude up then at the top we can just bevel it out

so hit control B and drag it down a little bit Oh check it down right around

there and if you use the scroll wheel you can smooth it out so there we go

that looks good right there not too bad now for this it looked like there was

like some sort of face in between this kind of like inside it so how I'm gonna

do that is alt right click here and if you hit the I key that will inset the

face but if you only hit it once it's just in setting all of them together if

you do it twice hit AI twice it'll instead the faces individually so there

we go let's bring that in probably around there that looks good now let's

extrude inwards so press E then right-click then press s shift to Z and

scale that in look at that so we got some detail in

that looks pretty good now let's position it so go into side

view by hitting 3 on your number pad and if we look at this view right here it

looks like this one is further back and this one's probably right in the middle

between the edge and in the middle so I'll right-click on this and I'll drag

it back till it's about the length that's that's probably good right there

maybe a little closer here then go to edit mode right click on this bottom

face and drag it inside the head then right click on this other antenna and

drag it back and probably around there looks good yeah maybe this one a little

further back this way yeah that's fine right there it's not gonna be too

noticeable so don't even worry about it but there we go that looks pretty good I

would say now for the eye what we're gonna be doing is adding in a UV sphere

so press shift a go to mesh and then UV sphere I'll position it over here then

I'm gonna delete half of it so go into edit mode press Z and then box select

the bottom bit and press X and go faces next add in a circle so press shift a go

to mesh and then circle position it right here scale it out maybe probably

around there looks good go into edit mode and make sure you're in vertice if

you try to extrude with face mode selected it's not gonna work like I try

to extrude it doesn't do anything so make sure you're in vertices select mode

then press E and extrude out now before we go any more let's position it into

place so we can actually see the size and everything so I'll scale this down

I'll rotate it this way I'll position it probably around here we'll use this this

reference image right here this third on and I'll scale down rotate it up

probably around there looks good yeah and then you can right-click on the UV

spirit and just drag it back a little bit more let's cut up maybe alright so

for this part right here this circle what we're gonna do is select this top

bit right here do you select the bottom and then go extrude so I've screwed that

out next box select these two vertices right here you can see those two

then going to front of you again and press G and then position it at this

angle so it's like that maybe right there looks pretty good so we have this

sort of small detail in it that looks good next I'm going to grab let's see

yeah let's go into the edge select mode and we'll just grab a couple edges right

here so this one and this one I'll grab this one and this one

I'm skipping every other one I'll grab this one and that one and these two at

the end hit extrude and then Z twice so it locks it to the normal z axis and

I'll just drag it right there perfect there we go we got some detail into this

part now but it looks pretty bad because it's completely flat so let's add in a

solidify modifier so go add modifier and solidify I'll drag the thickness up oh

wait that's on thickness this is the thickness I'll drag it out this way and

then I'll set the offset to one so it actually goes inwards instead of out

because if the offset is set to negative one you can see it's going out and this

is going in so I want it to go in next hit smooth shading on this outer guard

or whatever it is then go add modifier right here and edge split this will just

make it look a lot nicer then add a solidify another solidify a subdivision

surface to the eye so go ahead and modifier subdivision surface we can

change both the view and the rendered to two and then we'll hit smooth shading

let's take a look at that that looks pretty good let's go into front view

again make sure everything looks good we'll move it out of the way yep that

looks pretty good now let's position it so going to top

view by hitting seven and let's position it right in front right here you can hit

R and if you hold ctrl you can look at the bottom left corner you can see us

going in increments of five that is what control does if I let it go it just goes

like that so I'll hold ctrl and go 90 degrees then I'll position it inside so

I'll position it right there you can go in the front view and look at the

reference image and kind of position it like that so it looks like it's right

there going to side view and then drag it inwards

maybe rotate it this way a little bit let's take a look at that that looks

pretty good I want it to be a little lower though so what I'll do is I'll

grab both of these rotate it this way and drag it down just a tad let's take a

look at that there we go we got the eye let's press shift-z to see how it looks

not too bad the next thing that we're gonna be modeling is this little knob

our turn thing kind of looks like a volume thing so let's press shift a

we'll go to mesh and then circle let's position it over here and scale it down

so for this let's just go into edit mode with vertices select mode on scale it

down a little bit more I'll zoom in on that as well

okay so let's extrude right-click and scale inwards and then we'll drag it

down because as you can see in the front view it kind of looks like it goes

inwards just a little bit maybe and so from here we'll go extrude along the Z

well maybe not that's a little high up and then I'll drag it inwards

let's take a look at the reference image one more time so then it goes out and

then it goes back in kind of so from here we'll go extrude we'll scale it out

right here now then I will go extrude Z and scale inwards and I'll just round

off this top bit so scale C and scale just like this just rounding it up and

then at the end I'll press F there we go that's not too bad then for this edge

right here I'm gonna alter right-click it and then go extrude Z and just drag

it down so it looks good but currently the normals are totally messed up so

we'll go into edit mode select everything and go control in and that

will flip the normals and make them look good now if we zoom in on this knob you

can see that there's little small indents right here kind of that's what

they look like so an easy way to do that is go into edit mode make sure you're in

face select mode alt right click this edge loop and I twice like we did before

scale it inwards and then you can hit extrude and right click then press s

shift Z and scale out there we go we got this small amount of

detail and I think it looks pretty good let's look at the thing right here yeah

everything else looks good we'll go smooth shading on that it's

mâche ting and then we'll add in a edge split so go edge split and there we go

we got a little knob perfect let's go in the front view and then position it over

here so right click on that move it over this way and rotate it like that you can

double tap R to give it this sort of rotation or free rotation sort of thing

scale it down and then position it just drag that go into top view and then drag

it through rotate this way a little bit let's take a look

not too bad kind of looks like it needs to rotate this way though it's kind of

hard to rotate and position things when it's on a Hebe sphere but just try your

best look at different angles just like that rotate along the Z a little bit

there we go it kind of looks like this is a little tall so what I'll do is all

box select this part these like that deselect that Rico press g ZZ and just

drag that back just a tiny bit yeah I think that looks a little bit better

let's take a step back and look at it there we go not too bad I'll save that

by hitting ctrl s I'll save it to my desktop I'll just call it bb-8 tutorial

there we go let's brush shift Z not too bad that

looks pretty good so that is it for this part thank you

for watching and in the next part we will texture and give the materials and

do some rendering so thanks again for watching and I'll see you in the next

part

Reading and BookTube Goals for 2018 [CC] - Duration: 6:54.

Hi everyone! My name is Caroline, welcome to my channel, and today I'm going to be

talking about my reading goals and my channel goals for 2018. So, this yea,r I

kind of distanced myself a little bit from YouTube. I've been finding it hard

to be inspired, I found it hard to find time to film. I've been focusing a lot on

my studies, which is good... but I've just been missing this interaction, and I'm

really hoping that next year, I will be better at it. So, one of my first goals

for 2018 is to stay more involved in the YouTube community, by commenting on

people's videos, and by supporting other creators and posting more videos,

honestly. Also, I really want to make a big deal about reading more diversely,

and that means picking up books by marginalized authors in all genres, not

just young adult. Some of my favorite books that I read this year were

because of things such as DiverseAThon, or Pride Month, or diversity bingo

(which I failed at). This year, I read so many more diverse books, and I'm really

hoping that next year I will do so much of a better job and I will just read new

characters, and new experiences to new cultures. I find that so important, and

it's become so much more important to me over this year. Another goal of mine is

to read more adult, because I find myself reading a lot of young adult fiction.

That seems to be all I'm reading, and though that's great, I'm kind of coming

out of this age range? Not in a way that like, oh... it's hard. I feel like I'm in

this in-between place where there's not really a genre for me. New Adult tends to

be more erotic, or more sexy stuff and that's not me, that's not me at all. I'm

finding a hard time reading books that I can connect with for my age group. I

connect to books about younger people like teenagers, in the young adult genre. I

need to read more adult fiction, and I need to broaden my horizons! I think also

that this year, I need to set a lower reading goal because I went a little

overboard this year, and decided that I would read 100 books, which I did (I've

currently read 103 books). But I think that that stressed me out a lot thinking...

oh, I have to make this quota, I need to reach that place. And through that, I

rushed through a bunch of books, I didn't get to spend as much time focusing on my

favorites, and I didn't have that much of an enjoying time reading. Like, I

enjoyed what I was reading, but I wish that I'd taken more time to relax and

make it through my own pace rather than subscribe to a goal that I

made in early January, because I wanted to be like other youtubers or

other bloggers who were reading like 50, 100, 500 books a year, which is something that

can be attainable, but for me may not necessarily be enjoyable. So this year,

I'm going to do the thing where you say like... I'm gonna read one book this year

and you see it go into like thousand percent of your reading goal has been achieved!

That would be really nice, but I think that I'm just gonna focus on reading

more for myself, and reading what I feel comfortable with, and at the pace that I

feel comfortable with, and not putting as much pressure on myself to subscribe to

that. I think a lot of the reasons that I didn't make videos this year as much is

because I felt like I had to be like everyone else's videos. Videos like this

where you're sitting in front of a bookshelf, which is nice. It's nice and all,

but I don't think it really is for me entirely. I love doing reading vlogs, I

love moving around, I love doing lots of other things. And for me, I think a lot of

my personality comes out when I'm in a different space, when I'm able to move

around with the camera, when I'm able to talk about a singular book while I'm

reading and vlogging my experiences. I did something like that with ACOWAR, I

did a reading vlog, and that was awesome for me, and I really loved doing my

DiverseAThon vlogs, so I'd like to do more stuff like that in the future, and I

think that I need to just care less about getting the right amount of views,

or getting people interested, or getting new subscribers. Because, that's good and

all, but I shouldn't be catering to what other people want to see as much as what

I want to see for my channel, and for what I want to create. I don't want to be

looking back at this thinking oh! I hate that video, because I did because I felt

like I had to. So this year, I could be making more reading vlogs, I could be

making more skits, I could be making more musical theatre videos, because that's

who I am and that's what I enjoy doing, and I think that that's something I need

to focus on more next year. I really also enjoyed doing my readathons.

I've really enjoyed doing the Vampire Academy read-a-thon with Maddie, and I

just really enjoyed interacting with someone else and reading one of my

favorite series again, and looking at it from a different point of view. It was

great! It was a great experience, and we still haven't done the last

liveshow, hopefully we will soon! And then finally, my last goal is to make

more book reviews. I think that over the time that I have joined YouTube (it's

been almost two years at this point), I haven't done the many book reviews, and I

think that's because I was scared, I think I look at other reviews to go, oh!

They did so well, I could never do it that well, and push that aside, or I

read a book and I go oh, three stars! And then I finish it. I'd like to have more

of an archive of book reviews that I've built up over the years

that I can look back on, and be like that's...that's what I thought the first

time I saw it, the first time I read it, and now here's me reflecting on it two

years later with a completely different frame of reference, And I think that would

be really cool, though they don't get all the views that you do on YouTube! A lot

of that is hauls or bookshelf tours, which I've done both of, it's a really

enjoyable video to make, and it can be a great thing to look back on years later,

or a month later, or weeks later. I don't know, I think that book reviews are a

great way of looking back on how you've reviewed by before, and how you've

improved, and they're great devices for people who want to read the books, or

have read the books, and you who are looking back on it in the future, That's

it! Those are my reading and booktube goals for 2018! I'm going to focus less

than what I feel like I need to do, and focus on more what I can do. I'm going to

focus on making videos that I'm proud of and I want to make, and not focusing on

how many views they get, or how much engagement they get, Any subscribers I

get, I think that's really draining for me, personally, and I can get really down

in the dumps about it, and it's pointless, honestly. It's pointless! At the end of

the day, it doesn't matter if you have a thousand subscribers, or if you have

300,000, it matters that you are dedicated, that you are involved, and that

you love what you do. And I think that by focusing so much on what other people

think, or how many subscribers I get all that dumb stuff, I've lost my love with

it, and that's not something that I ever want to go through again. So, these are

the changes that I'm going to be making so that I can look back at this video

next year at the end of 2018, and think good! I accomplished that, or working on

it, or shoot! That failed. Thank you guys so much for supporting me, for watching my

videos, for following me on Twitter or Goodreads, or reading along with Vampire

Academy and the readathons, and I'm really excited for what next year is

gonna bring. I have some exciting things coming on thei horizon, and I'm really

excited that you guys are here with me and my channel. Thank you guys so much

for watching, and I hope you have a wonderful reading day. I will see you

guys in the New Year. Bye!

Rob Broome: Hello, and Happy New Year from SEANC! I'm Rob Broome and I'm your new Executive

Director. I want to thank the SEANC Executive Committee and the Board of

Governors for allowing me the opportunity to serve this great

organization and I look forward to meeting as many of you as I can very

soon. Before becoming SEANC's Executive

Director I was a state employee at the Department of Transportation. I know

firsthand the challenges facing state employees and retirees and I want you to

know that even though I'm the new guy at SEANC, our values and our mission have

not changed. SEANC will continue to fight for better pay, more affordable

health care and retirement security for state employees. We'll continue to be your

voice to state lawmakers. I can't do it alone though and I'm asking for your

help. We need all of you to get more involved.

Talk to your legislators and tell them why your job matters. Attend your

Q&A slash get to know me I've done a few videos on YouTube now but I've never

done anything where you guys can get to know me and I answer any questions about

it is for my New Year's Eve glitter glam makeup so if you fancy sticking

around and seeing me do this Q&A and then keep on watching ok so question 1

living now for my job question 2 how tall are you I'm actually six foot one

so yeah quite tall question three cats or dogs definitely dogs oh my god

if you know me then you know how embarrassing I am around puppies or dogs

litres a day it's ridiculous and with alcoholic I would have to say a gin and

tonic yes question 6 what is your favorite

animal I would definitely have to say dogs but seeing as we talked about that

before I'm not gonna say that I'd say second favorite is probably giraffes

they are so cute and they have like the longest cutest tongues oh my god they

just so cute question 7 tea or coffee

100% coffee I drink way too much of it but I'm absolutely addicted it is the

first thing that I have when I wake up in the morning and I feel like without

one I cannot function for the rest of the day question 8 what sports do you

play or have you ever played I'm not really into sports as you can probably

tell but one thing that I did really enjoy was swimming I used to train like

five times a week and I actually swam for my county and town in Cornwall so

would have to say my favorite book is IT by Stephen King I absolutely love

Stephen King and I just think the universe is he creates are just

incredible and I do not know how he comes up with all that kind of stuff but

recommended then I would definitely recommend that you go read that one next

question 10 who are some of your favorite youtubers I'd have to say that the first

youtubers that got me into YouTube were probably Tyler Oakley and Joey Graceffa

that as I have kind of moved into makeup and loving makeup my favorite makeup

sister she lives in London and she is amazing question 16 how do you describe

your fashion sense I would have to say it depends on what I'm doing because I

do do a lot of running and I have a lot of friends who run here in Bristol so

Logan Paul dead man video Reaction. What we should do as content creators - Duration: 5:36.

Hello, Welcome back to my channel this is Carine Rose and Happy New Year Happy New

Year for this first video in English on my channel for 2018 I wanted to talk

about something serious something I've seen on YouTube for the past couple of

days if you don't know Logan Paul

I can introduce him to you but I'm sure you know who he is he wasn't by there

doing pranks doing funny videos is funny to a certain extent recently he went to

Japan with his crew it was they were filming in this forest and the forest is

known to me a place where people commit suicide so he went there with his crew

members and the blood the film in the forest making jokes and laughing as

usual but forgetting that the video was going to talk about something very

serious yes in the beginning of the video they had a little warning I'm

going to put it somewhere here but it doesn't really change the part that they

were talking about suicide but in a joking manner in the terminal they had

this person who had committed suicide in the forest in the terminal the body was

hanging and the pleura to face it still offensive

do we agree it's talk of himself that's someone's dad that someone's cousin that

someone's husband someone's brother and the thing is we see on YouTube the best

um nail you have the more views you would get but I don't think Logan pole

as big as he is needs a terrific Tom no to have used to get views I don't think

he needs it I need to have channels like crazy but he doesn't he already has a

fan base he already has subscribers his soul went

ahead and put Ted Turner up the things the thing that baffles me the most is

that he was not alone that means the people around him were okay with him

doing that they edited the video the posted on the Internet as content

creators we have to be mindful and careful about the things that we post on

the internet because it affects people from the moment we turn on a camera we

are someone else's role model we have to be mindful of that we have to be careful

about that because we have kids on this plateau or YouTube is a great platform

but when someone that young 22 year old makes that much money I think they feel

like they are above everything I don't know how YouTube can fix the

situation I don't know how they are going to do it

but this is just my take on it and my message to other youtubers big small

beginners clay let's keep in mind we have kids on this

platform we have people who watch YouTube and apply water watching YouTube

in their everyday lives as parents we have to make sure also that the content

our kids are watching on YouTube appropriate

I know YouTube is doing them the best they can't to filter that kind of

content and since then the video has been deleted the video had around 6

millions views when he got donated and around 6,000 people liked it liked the

video does just to tell you how messed up it is pranks and all that is all

funny and jokes but when it comes to a human life we have to be mindful we have

to be careful we have to think about people who watch YouTube this is my take

on the Logan Paul situation I hope a YouTube is going to find a way to fix it

or to avoid it from repeating itself because the Paul brothers did they are

just out of control out of control this has to stop thank you very much for

watching you see you next time bye

Minha Vida é Um Filme - Stage 1, Level 0 - A Jornada Se Inicia! - Duration: 5:12.

Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Rick and Leo on a meeting for one of their projects to be released in 2018.

the Gaming and Animation industry are connected

and have a huge fanbase around the world

They're constantly growing every year,

and have overcoming the film insdustry for years.

the gaming and animation industry generated around $99.6 billions only in 2016

in comparison to the $38.6 billions from the cinema industry at the year.

We're two Brazilian artists from Campinas - São Paulo,

and we finally made it to our dreams of working in this industry

even being so hard to work in this industry in Brazil.

I'm Rick, Director, Writer and Digital Artist.

I'm Leo, Music Producer, Filmmaker and Project Manager.

our journey started in a school in Campinas - São Paulo

We're childhood best friends, and here started our dreams and our first histories.

I had so much creativity inside of me,

that I had to use my pens

to tell stories to my friends.

but everyone else always ended watching it too.

and being the only illustrator in my class,

why not turn these stories that I created into manga?

what I haven't realize yet, was that I loved not only to draw, but to entertain people.

(Rick making jokes)

in high school, I tried to draw too but, I was not even close to Rick's drawings.

I found a passion on writting lately, but I always loved music.

to compose, to play and to sing.

I have produced a lot of regional artists,

I also produced soundtracks for ADs, movies, and music for the TV, inside and outside the country.

and besides that, I manage the 2P projects.

2P Studios it's our animation channel on Youtube

it was there that we put our names on the entertainment world.

in 2 years, we reached almost 70k fans,

and more than 6 million views.

because of this channel, we produced for some big Youtube channels,

and for entertainment corporations.

NEXT EPISODE: Today it's a mark for us, right Leo?

Leo: Yep!

Rick: Look, come closer!

1 million and 20...

yeah...

sometimes I think that...

I've been born predestinated.
