Hey guys! And welcome to today's episode of Goodness!
First things first,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Today's Goodness!
Sesame Street
and the International Rescue Committee
have just won a hundred million dollars from the MacArthur Grant!
Now they will be using this money to bring education to the children of Syrian refugees.
Basically what's happening is that there's been a civil war in Syria for the past five years.
There are millions of people who don't have homes,
and no access to clean water,
They live in tents
All those bad things.
Over 2.5 million of these people
are under the age of 18.
They're children!
That is bigger than the population of Paris!
And out of these 2.5 million children,
over 1.5 million are under the age of 8.
What?!
WIthin these children, there are some who've never experienced peace.
Who don't know what it feels to be safe
and that's where the Sesame Workshop has decided to step in.
They're bringing in an education tailored to these Syrian refugee children!
Now, unlike the popular Sesame Street characters that we are fond of
like Big Bird
and Count Dracula
and the Cookie Monster,
they have created special Muppet characters for these children refugees.
These Muppets will speak a language that these children understand,
namely Arabic and Iraqi Kurdish.
And they will have relatable backstories for these children,
such as living in a tent
or having to move away from their home
or making good friends with the neighbors.
And this program will teach topics such as
literacy, numeracy, emotional and social skills.
It will teach children how to build relationships and to interact better with each other.
Hopefully this program will give these children some semblance of a regular childhood.
In the long term, this program will help to change the lives of so many children,
who despite their circumstances up until now,
will be given the skill and chance to build a better life for themselves in the future.
Thank you Sesame Street!
Anyways!
Hopefully this little piece of Goodness! has made your start to 2018 a little bit better!
Happy New Year!!
