About my life, I love to stay nearby Mekong river.
I will be happy over there.
Study hard, practice hard until...
until you get Enlightenment.
My name is Taveep Sittichanchai, you can call me T.
Mr. T's quest
Chapter 1
Can you tell me where are we?
So now we stay at Pipphalivanaram Monastery, the district is Ban Khai.
The people always come here for the goodness, for the luckiness, and pay respect to this big tree.
They believe that the leader of naga, name Pu Puchong, he is taking care here,
and for about naga, nagini and maybe all of, every kinds of snake,
and people here believe he is deva and he has some power that can help people,
so people come here, pay respect and asking for some good luck.
What are these dresses, who are they for?
People bring all of these dresses for fairy, like a deva, lady deva, that stay in this tree,
because we all believe that deva, naga, nagini, fairy, stay in this tree
so we come here for paying respect and blessing and ask for good life.
Can you tell me what usually people give to the nagas and to the devas, what is the usual offering?
I think you can see water and red juice, and something like the ancient Thai snack,
and if someone believe that naginis stay here you can see the cosmetics, and powder, a good smell powder,
and also you can see a lot of yellow flower, the name of this flower very famous, we call Dāwreụ̄xng [Marigold]
Dāwreụ̄xng - the name is like: make your life, your family grow up.
So, you have a powder and you are going to ask the naga to give you a lucky numbers, right?
Yes, it depends if someone believes or not, but I love to test, to get the number,
three lucky numbers for the first of September and you're gonna know result later.
So tell me what are you doing now?
I love to get the blessing and wish for three numbers.
And one more reason, not just we take number, we think, like, we pay respect for her,
we put good smell or powder for her leg, like pay respect, do the goodness, do something that's good for her.
Some do that, just for paying respect, but someone does it, like, take three lucky numbers.
So can you see them?
Please help me. Any kind of number, any number that you see.
Oh, I see something here...
What is the number?
OK the first number is...
Yeah?
First number...
Where?
Oh you saw it, what is the first number? From your mind, from your feeling.
It's six.
Six, OK, the second?
Are you gonna choose?
Don't worry...
I should choose?
Yeah, yeah.
The first one is six, and the second one...
I don't know, I see many ones... one.
OK, take the best.
This is one.
Yeah, OK, six, one, and the last one?
Last one... last one is around...
Oh, I see something here, this is a... it could be a five.
Six, one, five, OK! Thank you.
Yeah, that's it?
Yeah.
Chapter 2
We're gonna go to the northeastern part of Thailand, nearby Mekong river and Laos country.
I heard that enlightened monks, although they're gone but I'm really sure that their power still stays there.
And if we are lucky, we, two persons, can get some vision from them because we are practicing meditation and Dhamma practice.
And study about Buddha teaching, we still study, although we practice a lot and study a lot.
But it's time for practice hard and hard to get jhāna, even we can get the first level of jhāna,
but we love and try to get the fourth level of jhāna.
It's an important, although it's very difficult for us, for Dhamma practice, it's supposed to come together.
Sīla, samādhi and paññā, that means insight, take wisdom from insight to support meditation.
And after that, when we get the strong level, like forth jhāna, we get the power inside our mind.
At that time I believe we can overcome rāga from six senses.
Why you don't want to stay in the city, what's wrong with the city?
It's not wrong but it's like a normal life, that's useless, time and time, go on.
In the night time you can see all around in city, people just take food and drink, watching TV or movie
and also music and song and some watching the game for gambling, and talk, and drink...
Yeah, what's wrong with that?
It's nothing, because if we think we have just one life for this life that's OK, you can go on.
If you never known before that's OK, go on, because that is not a sin.
But it's very difficult to understand, it's a kilesa, or it's like a defilement. It's very difficult.
You are supposed to take your time, stop, and quiet, and notice and try to understand how about this life...
We are lucky. If we have a chance, just take a book or text about Buddha, study how about his life and what about his project.
He got out from the palace, what's he gonna do? He's gonna find something not for himself only, but for curing, for saving people from the suffering.
What is suffering? He is a wonderful guy that he noticed about "why?"
and "why people suppose to be old, and sick, and die. We have a better way or not to get out from sick, from old and die."
He took time for six years and he succeeded and found something – we call that Four Noble Truths.
If we tried and have time enough to give time enough to study about Four Noble Truths
and try to study some more teaching that supports this Four Noble Truths and take time for practice.
Study first – we call pariyatti, and after that practice, and also in our minds, or every minds, is not strong enough to understand.
That's why we're supposed to have time or keep some time for meditation, mindfulness and concentration.
And take time, take time to practice your mind, make it strong enough to have a power and efficiency to understand about some philosophy.
Now I'm free, I'm like "I who have no-one, I who have nothing",
so at that place nearby riverside, I think, I love riverside, come with a highlands and mountains and jungle.
And at that place I believe that many people over there, most of them sincerity,
but I think the girl that I'm gonna get her to marry, and take last life time of us,
she's supposed to have a lot of basic of Dhamma practice also, so that we can go together.
And after that if I will succeed in the future at that time, I tell myself, if I can get the fourth level of jhāna and overcome rāga
At that time I will help people, and teach people and let them know how about my techniques, and how to practice Dhamma.
I believe that healthy body gonna support healthy mind, and strong mind gonna support your body, make it strong, so they support each other.
If we're strong enough, we have more power and anyway we're supposed to take Right View first,
Right View or Right Thought, after that many techniques are gonna come with and support you go on the high state of Dhamma practice.
Chapter 3
Wat Pah Tham Kham - Northeastern part of Thailand
Right now we stay in the Wat Tham Kham. This is a forest monastery.
Phra Visuddhi Nayok, he is the biggest monk of this province.
I heard the word that is very important: real happiness and true happiness.
Because people in this world, they go on the wrong way.
But our former teachers Luang pour Mun, Luang pour Khamdee, Luang pour Fun, Luang pour Sin, Luang pour Thet
They are all Enlightened because they practice, and today I and you lucky that we meet him,
Luang pour Phra Vissuddhi Nayok, he is the leader of this province
The things to do everyday, start from the morning, go to piṇḍapāta.
After that take care, clean the monastery and meditate.
After that in the night time, study about Teachers teaching and Buddha's teaching.
Sīla, samādhi and paññā – monks living together in harmony.
Cleaning kuṭi, cleaning sāla, Wat Pah [forest monastery] is different from normal temple.
Everything is kept tidy and clean. Everything, like refuse bucket, is supposed to be put in the right place.
When there are 10 or 20 monks they are very quiet, they don't make noise
When there is time for piṇḍapāta, monks cannot make jokes or talk at all.
When you are going for alms, keep the mind in this manner, and recite the word „Bud-dho".
You have to wake up at 4:00 in the morning and meditate, when the sun rises you have to do your duties.
In the evening teacher gives Dhamma-talk. When I was a young monk I did the same routine. We couldn't talk with each other.
Anyone who can stay, they stay, some, who cannot follow Vinaya, leave.
When monk practices meditation in the kuṭi, he is usually feeling sleepy, he does not progress in the practice.
That is why he goes to the high platform. If he is sleepy again at that place he will fall and die.
Monk risks his life to practice meditation.
In the time of meditation you need to be serious, you cannot take it easy. [Thai proverb is:] die before die.
Same like Luang Por Mun, didn't take food or medicine, he just took Dhamma medicine.
If you are sick in the jungle, just use this Dhamma medicine.
You are supposed to have a brave mind.
When you practice sitting meditation you are never afraid of death.
Even though you live alone, you are not afraid of anything in this world.
I reached that stage also, I'm afraid of nothing anymore. When the practice is complete, I'm not afraid of anything in this world.
Have you reached that point?
It's not like that, but I feel calmness and my mind feels light,
in the morning piṇḍapāta and while eating, reading, meditating and taking rest.
Knowledge will happen by itself. You don't have to ask anyone. When you hesitate, just practice meditation. The answer will come to you.
Chapter 4
I had a dream long time ago about Chiang Khan and maybe this place is going to be my retirement time for stay.
I have a vision to stay some place and in my mind a long time ago, I'm gonna stay the place nearby Mekong river.
And I love some city in Laos, that means Luang Prabang, I don't know why, but I love to stay this side of Thailand, because I'm Thai people.
And when I stay here I love to have some piece of land here. I graduated from agriculture, Kasetsart University in Bangkok.
So you can say that you found what you were looking for?
Yes, and it's not just only the place I'm looking for. I found something more than that about my Dhamma practice.
I study a lot, like Peter, but we still need something more, like a support our Dhamma practice,
it's like meditation, and also Dhamma practice, insight, and we will take it, take it, more and more, as we can do it.
Some word people cannot accept it – like Peter and me – is like crazy guy, you're always talking about Enlightenment, for what?
Now I am 63 years old, I passed one lover and one wife, I had a family before, but right now I'm free, so...
I'm gonna get, maybe the third time or maybe not, I don't know. Someone told me, some girl is better, she had a vision her name is Ajahn Mae.
She told me that one lady waiting for me here. She is like a black-hair nun. I don't know if it is going to happen in nearby, not to far future or not.
So can you say that you are happy now?
More than that. Because not just only my retirement time, today I found one monk that I cannot speak, something like magic or superpower.
But I found him, and i'm gonna see him many times later from now.
People of the western part of this world, we call Westerners and Europeans.
People in Europe when they study more than this about Dhamma practice and understand.
We are not talking about religion, but if people in Western study Dhamma of Buddha – we call Buddhism, but we don't like to talk about Buddhism.
It's not a Christian, Buddhism or Muslim – we will not talk that. But we love to talk about Teaching.
And if some teaching of Buddha – take it if it's good.
If you are asking about my conclusion – this trip, this adventure for me and Peter, I think we success.
And about me, thank you so much for Peter because right now I meet my place and also along the way we get from Bangkok,
until today we got two things: we love to go on, we take together sightseeing Mekong river, wonderful I love, he loved also.
And second thing I meet my place already.
