Welcome back to Censored Anime, a special feature where we take a look at the censorship
made to Western anime in comparison to the original Japanese.
Today we'll be taking a look at episodes 24 and 25 of Yu-Gi-Oh!
Duel Monsters - a series that was notoriously altered when released outside of Japan.
But first, let's take a look at few things we missed the first time around from previous
episodes.
Last time we covered episode 22, which contained a scene showing Tea being jumped by a pervert
with a camcorder in the original Japanese release.
However, not only was the pervert changed in the English release to being a thief who's
after her purse - but actually in one shot Tea's skirt was lengthened as well.
Something else that'll be good to bring up that we've not done so far is some changes
made to two very commonly used cards.
Yugi's trademark card Dark Magician is used in nearly every episode, but, as regular viewers
will know by now, things to do with occult themes were normally removed outside of Japan.
It is this reason why Dark Magician has been renamed in all English Yu-GI-Oh media from
the Japanese name Black Magician - black magic being seen as too taboo for English audiences.
References to death were another big target for censorship and this ended up affecting
the very commonly used Monster Reborn - a card that allows you to special summon a monster
from either player's graveyard.
In Japan the card instead goes by the name Resurrection of the Dead and the artwork shows
an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph representing life.
As these edits pop up so often throughout the anime, it would unfortunately be impractical
to mention them every time, but you should know that whenever you see them used that
they've been changed from the Japanese originals.
Now that that's out of the way though, let's jump straight into episode 24, which sees
the fierce battle between Yugi and Kaiba continue.
Kaiba, when faced with the possibility of defeat, decides to take 5 steps back so that
he's right by the cliff's age.
He warns Yugi that a blow to his life points will send him flying off and, in the Japanese
version, is a shot showing just how high up they are, which was cut out of the dub.
Then more shots were cut out showing everybody look on worried.
Also, there's no dialogue in the Japanese version, whilst the English version has Joey
comment on how it's a "cheap stunt"
In fact the whole thing is much more serious over in Japan, with Kaiba saying things such
as "if you attack next turn, you'll be taking my real life and I will die".
You
really need to watch the whole thing to get the full picture of just how much more serious
it is in the Japanese version but to just conclude with this powerful line said by Japan's
Kaiba.
In the English version, it was changed to this.
Moving on to episode 25, which features a duel between Tea and Mai.
Now, with this battle involving Mai, the match again features multiple acts of censorship
towards her trademark Harpie Ladies.
The dub makes them cover up with extra clothing, something that's also found in the Western
version of the real card game Also, when powered with the spell card Cyber
Shield, the spikes coming out of the breastplate are removed outside of Japan.
The spell Cyber Shield is also renamed from the much more naughty Cyber Bondage, with
both the name and artwork being changed in the real life game as well.
Alongside the edits to Mai's Harpies, a few of Tea's cards were made to cover up too.
Fairy's Gift was originally completely naked in the Japanese version.
In the West though, she's been made to put clothes on.
Again, this change can also be found in all other Yu-Gi-Oh media.
Magician of Faith on other hand didn't have their artwork altered, but, like the real
life card, their name was renamed for English versions from Saint Magician.
Like other religious references, the "Saint" part of their name was likely seen as too
potentially problematic for Western culture.
The last for today is Elf's Light, another card showing a naked fairy.
Elf's Light was given clothes outside of Japan, with this being yet another change made outside
of the anime as well.
Plus, when the card is activated and comes to the field, it is again only naked in the
Japanese version.
