• Did you know there's a small chance your eyes could explode?
How about tumours that can grow fingers?
Here are 15 creepy things you didn't know about your own body
15 – There's more bacteria in your mouth than people on Earth,
• On average, the human mouth can contain up to 100 billion bacteria at one time.
This is several times more bacteria than the whole population of Earth, purely in your
mouth • And most of these will be lodged in your
saliva, travelling down your throat hole – you're literally eating billions of these microbes
a day.
• Tasty.
14 – You are paralysed while you sleep, • Sleeping could be a lot more terrifying
if you knew that your limbs & muscles locked up for most of it – that's right, you're
paralysed when you sleep • This is why people who suffer from the
sleep paralysis medical condition have periods where they can't move – it starts early
for them, while they're awake • Don't worry though.
It's temporary… usually.
13 – Nipples get infected during breastfeeding, • This one is for the ladies.
If you get to the point where you're breastfeeding a kid, be careful he hasn't recently eaten
a glob of dirt.
• Because nipples tend to get infected through the bacteria in a baby's mouth, which goes
in through the cracked nipple surface and infects the breast.
• We imagine it isn't the BEST feeling in the world.
12 – Your eyes can explode, • This is a rare condition that only affects
a tiny percentage of the population, but the condition Fuchs' Corneal Dystrophy is where
your eyes can randomly explode • They get filled with fluid, get hazy,
then if left untreated the cornea will simply get too big and then eventually blow up with
pressure • You can get transplant surgery if you're
okay with people slicing open your eyeballs.
11 – Fingernail growth is pointless and unstoppable,
• Over the course of your life, you'll grow over 40 feet worth of fingernail for
no actual reason.
Fingernails are an evolutionary leftover from primates who would use toenails for grip
• When you're young or old your nails will grow slower, but for everyone else it's
an unstoppable process with no point apart from being able to scratch yourself more effectively.
• An invaluable life skill, for sure.
10 – Exploding Head Syndrome, • The subtly named Exploding Head Syndrome
doesn't mean your head will explode – no, instead when you try to sleep, you'll hear
a cataclysmic explosion • People who have the condition describe
it like a bomb going off or a gunshot in their house, but when they look around everything
is normal • Between this and knowing your limbs will
lock up, it's hard to imagine anyone actually sleeping ever again.
9 – You're Leaving Skin Flakes EVERYWHERE, • Every day, millions of old skin flakes
are falling off your body like snow.
Everything you use, your phone, your water bottle, your keyboard are LITTERED with them.
• In fact, it's gotten so excessive that detectives can figure out a criminal's entire
lifestyle just studying how many flakes are on pens, phones, keychains & drinks.
• Next time you commit a crime, bear this in mind.
8 – When you blush, so does your stomach, • Did you know that when you blush, your
stomach does the exact same thing?
It turns red due to your nervous system increasing blood blow in all parts of your body
• The adrenaline pumping through your system promotes oxygen delivery, unfortunately you
won't be able to see the stomach turn this colour unless you're in surgery.
• Not a lot to blush about during surgery.
That's for sure.
7 – Human head stays conscious after decapitation, • Getting decapitated isn't fun.
Especially because for the next 4-12 seconds after your head comes off, you'll remain
conscious.
• There have been examples of this, like an assassin who stared at his executioner
in disgust, or in the late 80s when a man was decapitated in a car and his friend watched
the head stare at his own severed body in horror
6 – Tumors can grow hair, organs and eyeballs, • There are extremely rare tumours that
grow on the human body which can eerily grow some very weird things – hair, bones, organs,
even eyeballs.
• This is believed to be caused by germ cells which become sperm eggs that trigger
unexpectedly in the human body – like a parasitic fetus
• Luckily they tend not to cause any long term damage.
Except mentally.
It's just messed up.
5 – Left-handed people die 9 years younger than right,
• A lot of tools and machines out there are designed for the dominant right hand,
so left-handed folk beware – on average you'll die 9 years younger than right-handed
folks • Of course, this has nothing to do with
actual age, but it's due to all the accidents that left-handed people have with delicate
tools & knives which weren't designed with them in mind.
4 – You lost half an inch in height every 10 years,
• Starting at around age 30, your body will quickly start to revert back in height – in
fact, you'll lose half an inch every 10 years from that point onwards.
You can reduce the height loss with regular exercise though.
• However, if you lose it too quickly, that might be from a spine fracture – or even
from a heart disease.
• Or you got decapitated.
Studies show that tends to lead to a minor height reduction.
3 – There is a "rainforest" of bacteria in your belly button,
• There have been studies where dozens of people got their belly buttons swabbed.
Over 2,300 bacteria were find, with 1,500 of them totally new to science.
• For you and me, we have a "rainforest" of bacteria in there, usually around 60 species
which will happily enter your body and squirm around your innards.
• Forget behind your ears.
Wash your belly button.
It needs you right now.
2 – Humans glow in the dark, but you can't see it,
• It's a strange thought that we humans are bioluminescent, our bodies literally glow
in the dark – but the problem is our eyes are too weak to see it
• Photons emit from our bodies that get stronger and weaker as our metabolism heats
up or cools down, if humans evolved a little differently and the light was stronger we'd
glow like fireflies or jellyfish • We were sooo close.
1 – As a fetus, the first thing you develop is the anus
• When you develop in the womb, the lovely first part of your body that develops is the
anus • Yep.
Nine weeks into pregnancy you're just a floating piece of ass waiting for the rest
of your body to develop.
• It's alright though.
We've all been an asshole at once point.
So guys, what's the creepiest thing you can tell us about YOUR body?
