When things are flourishing, everything seems beautiful.
It smells a little different, and life looks a little brighter.
The feeling that anything is possible.
But during heydays we sometimes lose sight of the reality.
New coal-fired power plants.
Vertical cities.
Appartments with panoramic views.
We spend loads of money.
But it's only in times of crisis that we realize whether we've gone too far or not.
In The Netherlands from Above: Hard work to reap the benefits later.
But can we find a balance between growth and excess?
We are renowned for our flowers.
But maybe even more for our commercial spirit.
60% of the world's entire trade in flowers goes through the Netherlands.
Flowers from all over the world, on their way to our country.
St John's wort leaves the harbor of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Two weeks later a truck filled with roses...
leaves for the airport of Nairobi, Kenya.
Meanwhile a load of aralias from Italy...
makes a detour to reach the north.
To avoid the customs authorities...
it doesn't take the shortest route via Switzerland.
The flowers from Ecuador continue on their way to Aalsmeer by road.
The roses from Kenya are also going to the auction.
The truck with the Italian aralias...
picks up some extra flowers in the Westland...
before it arrives at the auction in Rijnsburg.
Germinis from Moerkapelle and santinis from Poederoyen...
go via the auction in Naaldwijk to Rijnsburg.
Here the flowers are tied together to be transported on...
to Germany, to be sold in Rain as Dutch bouquets.
The Stront race.
A competition for old cargo ships. Without engines.
Only wind and manpower.
Until halfway through the last century, every Fall the cow manure from the stables in Friesland...
was shipped to the poor sandy soil in the "Bulb" region.
A journey over the IJsselmeer and the Ringvaart...
that wasn't entirely without danger due to the fermenting and half-liquid cargo.

With the introduction of man-made fertilizers, the Stront sailing trips disappeared.

On board there'd be the captain, his wife, their children and the assistant.
Imagine this: During the entire voyage you are on a ship...
that's filled to the brim with cow shit.
The stench alone stifles you.
And if there's no wind, or if it comes from the wrong direction, you need to get poling.
The entire family laboring hard with long poles.
That's a painfully slow process, with your nose right over the fermenting cow shit.
And sometimes for a stretch of 40 kilometers without stopping.
Working hard to be able to reap the benefits in the end.
Rotterdam's new station, 9 years of work
The crossing near Nijmegen. 2.5 years of work for 2100 people.
With an American construction kit, you can accomplish a lot too.
This is how it's attached, and this is how you loosen it.
For 3 years Hans has been busy with bolts, nuts, bars and carriers.
But it's worth it.
His own airplane.
Today he will fly it for the first time.
A boy's dream come true.

I'd seen it being loaded in America.
I've got pictures of it.
A guy with a broad grin, looking into the lens: It's coming.
And six weeks later it was really here. Amazing.
Then you have a garage with mess.
And two thick manuals.
And then you can get started.
That's about three years ago now.
My wife's name is Bernadette.
She finds flying scary actually.
I also come home with stories about things that only just went right...
or that were very exciting.
But she doesn't begrudge me my passion.
And this is who I am.
And because she loves me...
she knows that this makes me happy.
They all wanted very much to join me, but I didn't want that.
I'm very excited myself.
And if there are people there who love you and with every hiccup of the engine say:
Is that a good idea? Is everything ok?
They can join me on the second flight.
Not just now.
Now you're still on cloud nine.
Everything looks rosy.
Yet, 1 in 3 marriages fail.
Ships waiting for cargo. It's crisis time.
In its heyday, here in Vlissingen...
one ship after the other rolled off the slipway.
But in the previous depression in the 1970s...
the shipyard was often hit by conflict and strikes.
The shipyard is deserted.
Except for one shed, the buildings have all been demolished.
A large piece of no man's land in the heart of Vlissingen.
I name you, 'Limburg'.
A couple of hundred meters further, a new shipyard is now in full operation.
What was good for the shipyard, was good for Vlissingen.
At its peak, 4500 people worked there...
at Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde.
In the 1980s, the entire Dutch shipbuilding industry went through a rough time.
Many shipyards were closed.
But we showed our resilience and found new markets, like the one for super yachts.
Right up to the present day, the Netherlands is still one of the absolute world-leading countries...
when it comes to building this kind of prestigious vessel.
The economy goes in waves.
One moment, the sky is the limit.
The next, there's a deep crisis.
Due to the current recession, the need for ships has dropped.
Some shipyards still have work, others don't.
It's the kilos right?
Theo used to earn his money from scrap that came from private individuals.
That went downhill.
As a true trader he decided to alter course.
He became a ship breaker.
We're earning from the crisis.
At this moment many boats are being offered for scrap.
By banks, insurance companies.
And by owners who have given up hope because there's no cargo anymore.
Loads of ships have been taken out of use.
We benefit from that.
On the one hand, it's terrible, on the other hand, we earn a good living from it.
Okay, we'll do that. Deal.
Sometimes we can blame the economy.
Sometimes things are viewed too optimistically.
During the Internet 'bubble' in 2000...
we thought the sky would be the limit forever.
Not so long ago, everyone - in a way of speaking - could buy a house.
Or even a second one.
Neatly landscaped parks with something for everyone.
But now we're finding out...
that too much may have been built.
There's no place with so many holiday homes as the Netherlands.
The highest density of holiday parks in the world.
Without water, nothing grows.
Every ditch in our country is a lifeline for farmers and growers.
But just 1 or 2 centimeters too much water and the bulbs rot.

Slowly we're realizing that everything contains energy.

But because this isn't enough, our own garbage has to be added.
8 garbage trucks, swarming through the city center of The Hague.
In this new residential area with straight roads...
only 4 trucks are needed to collect the garbage as soon as possible.
To keep the Rozenburg plant in operation constantly.
But in order to deliver energy to households every day...
our waste alone is not enough.
That's why garbage from England is imported...
to feed the hungry mouths of the incinerators.
Energy from waste.
A cautious step towards a new balance.
Not even 5% of our energy is sustainable, but there'll be more in the future.
Energy from sun and wind.
Biomass from fertilizer...
and wood.
For every used part, a new use.
An abandoned railway becomes a nature trail.
Flourishing without pollution or excess.
In balance with nature.
