Welcome back to the Gentleman's Gazette!
Today's video is about 18 must-have items every gentleman should own.
No, this is not an EDC or everyday carry list, it's much rather a list of items that you
should have at your office or your home and you can use them occasionally when it's appropriate.
The first item is a good quality well fitting suit.
So ideally, that's a bespoke suit such as you can get on Savile Row.
As a side note, the Japanese word for suit is SEBIRO which is their pronunciation of
Savile Row.
A bespoke suit makes a very interesting experience, at the same time, it's quite pricey.

If you still want a customized garment that is not as expensive, you may want to go with
a made to measure item, or if your budget is quite low, I suggest you look for a vintage
suit made out of a heavier fabric because it will drape well and that way, you get something
that fits well that is of high quality in a very low budget.
By the way, today I'm wearing a vintage suit, it's a brown three-piece suit, so it doesn't
always have to be a navy suit or a business suit, it all depends on what you would use
it for and if you're in the office, by all means, go with a business suit.
If that's not the case, it's okay to go with a more casual suit.

The second item you should own is a quality lighter.
Ideally, with a double flame.
A traditional brand would be something like a DuPont and if you don't smoke, not even
cigars, it's okay you don't need it but at the end of
the day, it's each to his own.
The third item you should invest in is a good umbrella.
Obviously, some countries specialize in umbrellas because they have very rainy weather, such
as England, or Great Britain, and because of that, you'll find lots of quality makers
on that island.
Good brands include Brigg, Fox umbrellas, or James Smith, but you can also go with
something from Italy such as Mario Talarico or Francesco Maglia.
If you go with a quality umbrella maker, you can choose the size of the canopy, you can
choose the ribs, you can choose the material, and especially, the handle and the construction.
For example in this umbrella, I had a little seat built into it which comes in quite
handy if you like to go to museums and if you want to sit down and enjoy
art or the picture.
In terms of colors and the woods you choose, it's entirely up to you.
If you're a business person and you want to go under the radar, maybe something in black,
charcoal or navy blue is exactly right for you.
If you want to be a little bolder, maybe a bright blue or a red or a green is better
for you.
One of my favorite umbrellas is this one here with green, red, and gold stripes.
The problem is, the nicer your umbrella, the more likely it is to be stolen.
if you leave it, maybe at a restaurant or at a store.
So make sure if you invest money in your umbrella
that you keep an eye on it.
The fourth item any gentlemen should have is a quality trench coat.
Some purists swear by the original models from Burberry, others go with Aquascutum.

The fifth item a gentlemen must-have is a quality corkscrew.
Some people like Laguiole, which is a French brand, and they have handmade corkscrews made
for sommelier or waiters or people who just use it a lot.
They're handmade, they have different pricing options, depending on the wood, and I think
they start around $30.00 and go all the way up to 250 - $300.
Now, you can also find those on Amazon but there are
lots of fakes out there, so buyer beware.
Another less costly but nevertheless, quality option is a brand called
Pulltap's, it's a Spanish brand and it's just a very nice tool.
They also can be had starting at 20 euros to around 30 dollars and a good brand to buy
them from online in my experience is Pulltex.
The sixth item a gentleman should invest in is a linen handkerchief or ideally, several
linen handkerchiefs.
You can either wear them as a pocket square, such as these ones from Fort Belvedere, or
you can use them to dry your tears, to polish a glass, or do something else.
To add a little more detail, we offer our linen handkerchiefs
with an initial and traditionally, a gentleman would
choose his first initial, that way, if he would hand it out to someone especially a
lady, who may be needed it for tears or something else, they would remember who they got it
from.
The seventh item a gentleman must have is a good quality fountain pen with a gold nib.
If you follow the Gentleman's Gazette, you know that my journey in the classic gentleman
world started with fountain pens and to this day, I still own a few even though my collection
has slimmed down from over a hundred to just three or four.
There's simply nothing like a good fountain pen because it's very smooth, it gives your
handwriting a very distinguished sophisticated look that can't be replicated with a ballpoint
pen or a rollerball.
If you want, you can have your initials engraved on the cap which makes it more personal.
At the same time, you won't be able to sell it and that should not be the idea, you should
rather try to pass it on to a loved one or a child.
The only problem with fountain pens is that once you have one that you like, you always
invest in more of them, and you quickly become a collector.

The eighth item you should invest in is a quality toolbox with quality tools.
No matter if you own a home or if you rent, you'll always need some tools.
It could be things like installing a dishwasher, maybe hanging a picture, or just measuring
a piece of furniture so it fits where it should fit.
Sometimes, people swear by certain brands such a Stanley, DeWalt, Milwaukee, or Bosch.
At the end of the day, you'll have to figure out what is an acceptable amount of
money to spend on the tool, however, I find that oftentimes you can find quality tools
at estate sales or at flea markets.
Of course that way, you hardly ever get an entire full set with exactly all the tools
you want because inevitably, if you want to use a wrench, you will have all the sizes
but the one you need.
Nine, invest in a real camera.
By that, I mean something where you can adjust the ISO, the
shutter speed, and the aperture manually, so you can take exactly the picture that you
want.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a film camera and personally, I used to have film cameras
even nice Leicas but I just would never use them and if you don't use your camera, it's
worthless.
Because of that, I only use quality digital cameras and I like
to exchange lenses to get exactly the look I want, whether it's a portrait, a landscape
shot or maybe a zoomed in shot on an eagle while in Alaska.
If you just want a camera to walk around, you may want to consider a Leica which is
something a lot of famous photographers in the past have used to snap iconic shots and
while the quality is very high-end, most of them are manual focus so you have to like
that and the quality, however, is really top-notch but it also comes with a very high price tag.
Personally, I invested in good Nikon lenses and so I stick with that brand and
right now, I'm using a Nikon d850 camera.
The tenth thing you should invest in is a black dress shoe more specifically, the black
cap toe Oxford that is Goodyear welted.
Why black you might wonder?
It's a very formal shoe that you can wear for business purposes, for funerals, or whenever
you need a serious looking shoe.
You want a cap toe Oxford because it's very simple but not too plain and it's just a very
standard shoe and I think it's the first shoe every gentleman should invest in.

The eleventh thing a gentleman must have is a signature scent.
As you might suspect, I always favor quality scents and I stay away from famous name brands
such as Armani or Ralph Lauren, or Mont Blanc because generally, the essences they use inside
the bottle costs very little, the flacon cost a little more and a profit overall is quite
high.
For your signature cologne, I suggest to choose something that evokes fond memories because
not only does it make it you happy, but it also spreads your mindset around those of
you who smell the scent and so you create an aura of positivity around you.
The twelfth item you should invest in is a serious watch.
Some people say a proper watch is the first jewel a man owns and while you can discuss
about that, it's definitely something that is part of a classic gentleman's wardrobe.
First, consider the use of your watch.
If you work in a professional setting, in a casual setting, or do you want something
for evening events.
There are some watches that you can wear wherever you go but in general, keep in mind the dial
and the strap.
For example, for professional use go with an uncluttered clear dial that is light-toned
and maybe a leather strap.
An evening watch, on the other hand, should have a dark dial and you can go likewise with
a leather strap.
If you want more of a weekend watch or a chronograph or a dive watch, you should go with a steel
band and something that you simply enjoy looking at.
Just like with many items on this list specifically shoes, you should always invest the most money
you can into a good watch because it can be handed down to your loved ones; at the same
time, find something that works for you.
As a side note, if you are not into wrist watches, consider a pocket watch which gives
you a vintage elegant look and at the same time, you can get comparable watches out of
solid gold, at a fraction of the price you'd have to pay for a wristwatch.
The thirteenth item to invest in is a bottle of vintage port.
It's a Portuguese tradition that when a child is born, you buy a bottle of that vintage
year and sometimes, it's not available simply because that year, the wine wasn't good enough
and then you can choose something maybe that's your bottle and then you can crack it open
on the child's 18th birthday and drink it with them to evoke fond memories and talk
about family stories.
Fourteen, get a great copy of your favorite book.
By great, I mean either the first edition or another edition where the author made significant
changes.
Preferably, you want something that is a leather-bound because touching it and feeling it and smelling
the leather just evokes different feelings and it can't be replicated on your Amazon
Kindle.

even though you should not intend to sell it one day, I urge you to resist the temptation
to leave marks or notes in the books because among collectors that greatly evaluates the
price of the book.
The fifteenth item to invest in is a pristine white dress shirt.
I think it should be the first one every gentleman invests in because it's something that can
always be worn and while there are other shirts that are quite well - such as light blue or
off-white especially if you like more casual ensembles, a white dress shirt should be the
cornerstone of every gentleman's wardrobe.
if I had to pick just one white dress shirt, it would be a solid white one along with subtle
pattern such as this waffle pattern I would go with a medium spread collar and French
cuffs for cufflinks.
the 16th item to invest in is a good timeless classic pair of
cufflinks.
By that, I mean something that you can wear with different outfits no matter where it's
a business suit or a tweed sport coat and I found that probably
the most versatile one is a pair of knot cufflinks and because of that I designed a monkey fist
knot cuff link in yellow gold rose gold and silver and it's an investment but at the same
time it's something that you can hand down to your children when you're not around anymore
until then you can enjoy the pair of cuff jewelry on your shirt wrists and earn compliments
for them as you go
The 17th thing every gentleman should have is a quality belt and a quality pair of suspenders.
Ideally, the belt should have folded edges or should be neatly edged painted.
It can be hand sewn or machine sewn because that will outlast every glue you want it to
be made from a quality leather from the inside and out and ideally you should always match
the color of your belt to your shoes while belts are great, suspenders definitely have
their place especially the ones that you button in especially for evening wear or if you maybe
have a little bit of a belly or if you like your pants looser around your waist because
with suspenders they hang from your shoulders and so no matter how much you eat you can
always have a comfortable pair of pants all day.
last but not least, the 18th item I think every gentleman should have is a signet ring
or a pinkie ring.
Now some people may disagree with me but I think a little pinkie ring it's just a very
elegant thing that a gentleman can wear and just like with fountain pens once you have
one you will likely create a collection.
it doesn't have to be solid gold and it can be sterling silver you can go with stones
and if you have a family crest, by all means, put one on if you don't have one that's no

in today's video I'm wearing a three-piece suit and it's, in fact, a vintage suit from
Mario Caraceni it used to be very expensive I got it for a very small amount and it still
fits me quite well it is not perfect because it wasn't made for me but because the fabric
is heavier it drapes well it's made out of a charcoal brown color which means it's a
charcoal brown and white in a needlepoint or needle hat pattern the jacket is single
breasted with a wider peak lapel and two buttons and no vents which is a very traditional cut
especially in combination with a waistcoat that is double breasted with six buttons and
a lapel the pants have two pleats which is good for me because I have big thighs and
a big seat I'm pairing it with a white cotton dress shirt from Siniscalchi in Milan the
fabric has a light waffle pattern which breaks things up and it's not just like a regular
solid I also go with French cuffs because it's a gentlemen way to wear the shirt my
cufflinks are from Fort Belvedere you can find them in our shop here they are monkey
fists knot cufflinks in rose gold and they pair well with my pinky ring which is likwise
rose gold with a bloodstone I'm wearing a traditional threefold necktie made out of
an english printed silk it's also from Fort Belvedere and it goes well with my pocket
square which is red and it picks up the tones of the tie and overall with a brown and the
white it's all very harmonious looking the flower in my lapel is a silk boutonniere likewise
from Fort Belvedere you can also find it in our shop just like the shadow stripe brown
and green socks that I'm wearing here for my shoes I opted for Derby model with a wing
tip and broguing even though it's brown it has enough contrast to suit so to all looks
