Hello and welcome to Learn English wiht Jojo.

Today we're in my new room, in my new apartment in Chicago so

welcome and today I wanted to talk to you about something specific, it's

not a lesson in English, it's just to give you more info about my channel, behind

my channel and that will let you better understand how it works here with me.

So the subject today is why I make videos in French and not

in English.

I do make videos in English as well, but I like making videos in French better

and we're going to talk about that.

The first reason that I make this channel for the most part in French

is because there are already a lot of channels in English for you to learn

English so you can go see all that, you can search

"Learn English with" in Google (or Youtube) and you'll choose between something like 20 channels.

So I wanted to do something different.

There aren't a lot of channels for you to learn English in French with a

native English speaker.

I don't want to make things int he same way everyone does.

And the second reason is that it's quite possible that you already have a lot of experience

in English, meaning you watch Game of Thrones, you listen to music

in English, you watch movies in English maybe, but you don't understand enough;

you watch moves in (English) with French subtitles because you don't understand

everything.

There's a lot of slang, a lot of expressions, a lot of grammar that isn't... that you

didn't learn in school and you are a little bit stuck and this channel is here

to make you unstuck, to clarify little things for you that aren't too hard

but without good instruction aren't possible to truly learn, so that's

why I do that.

And the third reason is that I want to make videos in French and to stay

motivated, to continue to make videos once a week, twice a week,

I need to do something that I enjoy and so speaking French is something I enjoy.

It lets me continue to learn, to continue to practice, to improve myself,

to do all that, it's really good.

I advise you that if you want to start a channel in English, a Youtube channel

it lets you listen to yourself, watch yourself, analyse yourself in the editing process

and all that is very good.

If, for example, I make a 10 minute video, I speak to the camera for around

20 minutes and so I practice a lot.

20 minutes speaking another language is already really good, good for improving.

And to finish this video I wanted to say that what I'm doing with this channel

is maybe not the best, meaning it'd be maybe better if I made

videos only in English because you could immerse yourselves at the same time as learning

learning little grammar rules, slang, expressions and all that but I can

make videos in English too and that works for immersion and you already have

a lot of videos on Youtube in English, you can go see those videos and

everyone's happy.

If you have any ideas about that, if you don't agree, if you think that "Jojo, we already

know how to speak French , you need to make videos in English because we

have to learn English and... we don't like you and stop" you can say that and I

will listen, I will continue to make videos in French anyway, but

I'll maybe change the videos, change the ideas, do more videos in English,

do videos half in English, half in French, stuff like that.

So I want to listen to you and ummm.... otherwise I just found a job, I am going to work

I think thirty hours a week so I am going to... I am not unemployed anymore, so

that's already pretty great.

I can pay my rent in my new apartment and all that but that means

I will maybe do fewer videos on this channel because I am going

to be very busy, busier than before, thirty hours a week isn't too, too much.

I am going to continue anyway, even if it's a little bit less I hope you're still

down and ummm... yeah.

One day I'd like to pay my rent with this channel but we're not there yet.

You have to have... one hundred thousand subscribers to do that, so... yeah.

maybe in two years I don't know.

Welcome to the sunny southeast part of Ireland.

We are in County Wexford.

This is actually where I'm from.

I brought you down to Rosslare where I wanted to show you a little bit of what it has to

offer.

It is a seaside town and people come from all over Ireland to go on their vacation here

during the summer time.

It's really pretty.

It has some great food.

And I'm going to head into Kelly's Deli right now and get a cup of coffee and one

of their delicious scones.

So come on!

Before we go into Kelly's, you should know more about the Kelly Family.

The Kelly's Hotels were founded in Wexford in 1895.

Kelly's Resort is just down the street from Kelly's Deli.

Families from all over Ireland spend their summers here year after year.

Being from Wexford, my family celebrated many special occasions including my Holy Communion

when I was 7 years old.

On this latest trip, My dad, husband and I had an incredible meal in their bistro but

I'll save for that for another time.

The Kelly's family have been taking care of people for years so they really know what

they're doing.

Everything they serve is baked nearby.

You'll find fresh loaves of Irish Soda Bread, breakfast danish, flakey croissants and other

goodies made from scratch.

But their scones are the reason why I'm here.

Not only are they as big as your hand but they're a dark golden brown which is the way

I like them.

So in Ireland you can't have a cup of tea or coffee without having a homemade scone.

Now this is a raisin scone and they serve it here traditionally with some jam, cream

and some butter.

And you would have all three on there.

And it's absolutely delicious with a cup of coffee.

So I know it seems a bit extreme to be putting jam, and cream and butter on a scone but when

you have them all together you're going to know exactly why.

It's so great.

I will admit it seems more like a dessert than it does like something you would have

for breakfast.

Have a little bit of my coffee.

Mmm.

They make really good coffee here.

A bit of my scone.

I don't know…in America if I would be eating this for my breakfast but there's

something about being home.

In Ireland.

Having a cup of coffee.

You have to have a scone.

Oh, so yummy.

So scones are kind of little crispy cakes.

They're really easy to make.

You bake them off really fast.

But they're crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle.

Loaded with fruit usually, maybe berries.

Something like that.

Nuts.

My favorite one is just simple with berries because that's the traditional way you'd

have them.

I think my favorite part about a scone is actually the crispiness around here.

You see that.

And on the base.

You see how crispy that is.

I always get tons of requests for Irish recipes on Bigger Bolder Baking and that's why my

Traditional Irish Scones are one of my favorites to share.

I'd say it's because we're a nation of tea drinkers.

That the weather is cold here.

It's rainy a lot.

The kettle is always on.

I'd say that's why scones are so popular.

Because you're always having a cup of tea or coffee.

And you have something sweet to go with it.

But it's a whole big ritual.

You have a hot drink.

You have a scone and it's sweet.

You put jam and cream on it.

It's freshly baked.

Like my mom would whip these up at home in no time at all.

If she knew someone was coming around in half an hour, she would whip up freshly made scones.

Outside of Ireland, I've never had a scone that tasted the same.

In America they're very different.

They're a little bit dryer.

Sometimes they put icing on them.

So it's a bit of a different experience and they don't put butter in the middle.

Irish Scones are definitely unique.

When you come to Ireland you have to try one of these.

I definitely like to have my fair share of scones when I'm home in Ireland.

Now that I've grabbed a quick bite, I'm going to hit the road.

Getting around my hometown of Wexford means you'll be driving a lot.

Everything is really spread out.

But at least I get to enjoy the beautiful Irish countryside.

So right now we are driving to Carne.

Carne is a little kind of village near Rosslare Strand in Wexford and it is known for its

seafood.

They get great seafood here that comes in from Kilmore Quay.

And seafood that comes into this part of Ireland gets shipped all around the world.

It's really fantastic.

So we're going to head to this really popular local brew pub kind of a thing and it's

called The Lobster Pot and it's been around for donkey's years.

And it's really quaint.

For me it's a blast to the past because we used to go here as kids all the time with

my brother and my sisters, my mum and my dad.

And we used to love it.

So it's really nice to be able to go back.

These villages in Ireland are tiny.

There are only a few thousand people who live in them because they're kind of like villages

in smaller towns so they're their own little communities.

Places like the Lobster Pot are part of the fabric that makes Ireland so special.

They have so much character that makes each one unlike any other.

For years, visitors from far and wide along with locals like my family have gone out of

their way to make a trip to the Lobster Pot.

I went a little early on a weekday but these place can be jammers during the summer.

I have a personal connection to this place, too.

This is the owner, Ann Hearne.

She's the mother of a friend, Sharon Hearne-Smith, who is an incredible Irish cookbook author

and food stylist.

Ann and her husband, Ciarin, have owned the Lobster Pot for 33 years and it's still

an institution.

So it's pretty cold and rainy today so it's a nice day for soup and being in a seafood

restaurant you have to order their Seafood Chowder because you just know it's going

to be good.

All of this fish is sourced locally in Wexford.

Just look at that.

How meaty it is and those gorgeous muscles.

We're really fortunate in Wexford to get really great fish and shellfish.

It is so good.

Mmm.

So you get such different chowders all over the world.

But generally in Ireland you get a creamy base chowder.

Now it's not generally really really thick.

It has a little bit of a touch of cream.

And then some local fish.

Some Shellfish.

A few vegetables in there.

Chowder is serious comfort food.

It's like a hug for your heart.

It makes such a difference when your produce is sourced locally.

It's as fresh as it can be.

The seafood and the shellfish is that little bit sweet.

There is not fishiness from this.

Good fish should never smell or even taste like fish.

It should taste like the seawater and that's what this tastes like.

Oh, I could eat that all day long.

So the whole reason I came here is for this dish.

It's called Crab Mornay and it's crab meat with a cheesy saucy on top.

Now this crab is fished in Carne, where we are right now in the Southeast of Ireland.

Just check that out.

Do you see the crab?

And the cheese sauce?

The thing about it is it's not really rich.

It's absolutely beautiful.

A little bit salty.

Decadent.

Yummy.

Make sure I don't eat it too fast and burn my mouth.

You know what.

When they say some things never change.

That's not a bad thing.

It tastes the exact same as it did when I was a kid.

It's absolutely gorgeous.

One of the reasons why I love crab meat and a lot of shellfish is that little bit of sweetness

and the little bit of saltiness from the seawater.

And the cheese sauce on top is a Wexford Cheddar Cheese Sauce so that is also cheese that comes

from the local town.

I'll tell you.

It doesn't get much better than this.

So years ago, probably when I was in my early teens, they filmed the movie Saving Private

Ryan here.

Not a lot of people know that but they filmed it in Wexford on one of our really big beaches.

And I remember the film crew actually came here to The Lobster Pot to eat and I was just

astonished.

I thought that was absolutely amazing.

People from Hollywood going to The Lobster Pot.

So here I have a dish that is absolutely simple and delicious.

It is Crab Claws fried with Garlic Butter.

Now it seems like a pretty easy thing to do.

The flavor of this with the sweetness of the fish and the crab claws is absolutely gorgeous,

so I'm going to put on a little bit of lemon on top.

I'm going to dip them in my garlic butter.

And I'm going to go like this.

Take it straight off.

Then you get this and you go like that.

Then you suck out that bit of meat that is in there.

Mmm.

And that is how you eat a crab claw.

Not the most polite way but definitely the most delicious.

Mmm.

Look at this big bad boy.

Crab meat is really delicate.

It has a delicate taste and a delicate texture.

It just kind of falls apart.

Mmm.

So when I was a kid we used to come on holidays to Rosslare and we'd rent a house.

And in the morning my mum used to go over to the fisherman and she used to ask them

for crab claws because they would take the body of the meat of the crab and they would

sell it but they would give my mum bags of crab claws.

And we were like 7, 8, 9.

Pretty young.

So she would bring the crab claws home.

And she would cook them.

And she would give us big bowls of crab claws and we would just sit there watching TV eating

them.

I can still picture myself sitting there eating them and I can almost taste them.

You know when people talk about their final meal, definitely mine would be a whole lot

of seafood, shellfish, prawns, crab, lobster.

All that sort of stuff.

That's the way I want to go…

The world has become so filled with fast food chains and large restaurants but it's still

nice to see a family run place…especially one that has been around so long.

Even though my seafood lunch was epic, I'm still on the hunt for more great Eats to show

you and I think I know just the thing…

Now I know a convenience store doesn't seem like the kind of place a food lover should

be but wait and i tell you…

Shops all over Ireland serve this giant ice cream famously known as a 99…

This is what you have when you go to the beach, it's summertime in Ireland or Britain.

It's soft serve ice cream…mmm…with a Cadbury's flake stuck into it.

Now why it's called a 99, I have absolutely no idea.

All I know is that it's absolutely delicious.

And this reminds me so much of my childhood and summers and being off school.

Yep, you can't beat a 99.

Ireland isn't always thought of as a food destination but whether it's freshly baked

goods, seafood straight from the ocean or simply delicious desserts, you'll find some

of the best food you've ever had here.

I guarantee it.

Pushing Past Your Comfort Zone - Duration: 4:08.

Hey everybody and welcome to the video.

This is Josh here and today we are talking about why you should get out of your comfort

zone.

Let's get into it.

So I wanted to take a couple of minutes to explain why I think it's so important for

us to always be pushing past our comfort levels.

Because I had a few conversations with people in some messages and in some comments on the

channel, and I think it's a really important thing to go over.

From my experience, stepping out of your comfort zone is the only way you're going to be able

to make progress in weight loss, or in life, or in anything.

I think back to all of my best memories, and they were all in very uncomfortable situations.

Or I think back to any progress I've made with weight loss or my career, or anything.

And I know it's tough, and it's uncomfortable, and it doesn't feel normal, but if there's

something you're working towards or if there's something you want to change, or if you want

to lose weight, or anything like that, pushing past all of that discomfort, all of my insecurities,

it's lead to all of the best things about my life.

It's important to always be pushing those boundaries, and pushing those limits, and

that doesn't necessarily mean you have to be uncomfortable for the rest of your life

if you want to get anywhere, but when you push those boundaries and you step past your

comfort zone, it increases the range of your comfort.

You almost need to treat it like a muscle.

The more discomfort you put yourself through the bigger your range of normal and comfort

can get.

And this really goes for anything in your life.

Pertaining to weight loss, obviously you being comfortable lead you to where you're at now

so there needs to be changes if you want to be able to lose the weight, and to keep the

weight off.

That was a realization I had to make, as the weight was going down and I was having to

deal with all of the mental aspects of my weight loss.

Because these changes in your lifestyle to be able to lose the weight and to be able

to keep it off, can't be a temporary thing.

You can't go back to where you were and just resume your old life because you'll just gain

all of the weight back.

That's why I had so many backslides and missteps along the way, because I didn't really learn

how to balance things properly.

To be able to keep the weight off...until I finally did.

Making those changes and being uncomfortable is going to suck for a little while, believe

me.

But it really is worth it.

The only way you're going to learn about yourself, and to test your boundaries and to test your

limits, and to test and see what works, what doesn't work, it's all about trying to figure

out how to--how to live with a healthier lifestyle and body.

The only reason I'm not a shy, introverted, 300 pound, unhappy person right now, is because

I took those risks, and I stepped out of my comfort zone.

Push past it.

Get a little uncomfortable from time to time, it's going to increase your range of comfort

in life and it's going to lead to some of the best things and the best memories you'll

have in your life.

But that was the main topic I wanted to bring up, I hope everyone's week is going well,

mine has been smooth as butter.

It's been pretty quiet, I've just been kind-of hunkered down, working on videos.

I can't believe I've been doing this for a year, having this relationship for me has

been so rewarding, so I really appreciate all of you watching every week.

as possible for everyone to see, because it's so important, I want everyone to be pushing

When Martin said to me:

"It's best if you organise something for the Midissage,

music or poetry or the like," at first I thought,

sure, I'll manage to organise something. But then I always find that I'm not such a great organiser

and at a certain point, a week before, I thought "Damn, I still have to prepare something."

And then I decided to simply do a short talk myself, about a topic that occupies my mind.

So I thought: "Yes, I'll do that." And then, the next day,

the 'monsters' appeared. One of them said:

"What do YOU have to say? What kind of nonsense is this?"

And the other one said "Yeah great, we can chat a bit, and just see what happens."

So I've decided to obey the second one.

I've written down some thoughts

and I'll try to form a coherent whole from that.

What I found beautiful about the previous talk was the mention of monsters

and that they live within us

And that is, I think, the main theme of my work

for me, it's about encountering the inner forces, and faces,

and they are not always joyful and happy.

But that is also important. I will now try to explain why.

What I just said about these two voices,

one wants to move forward, it wants the good,

when you have a project, you want to make something good out of it,

and the other part of us says:

"I am afraid, I don't want this, I feel unsure, I'll watch some more tv and eat some more."

I believe it's important to see both of these parts of us.

I also have a confession to make.

Since my vernissage I haven't painted anything, other than some sketching

I wasn't in my studio until yesterday, when I thought:

"I can't present myself at my midissage without having painted something."

I did sketch a bit, but my taxes for 2015 still needed to get done,

this voice that said "no, we won't do that yet" was very strong in that case.

I overcame that.

And in the meantime I wrestled with the question, Why would I actually make art?

Why is it important? Why…

Why would I devote my life to art? Or, what's the benefit, also for others?

And I've found some answers, some people who speak wisely about that.

And one of them is a psychologist in Toronto, his name is Jordan Peterson

and he explained it like this: We can divide the world into that which we know,

where we can say, "I'll do this and that", and it works out well when we do it that way.

It's where we know how the world works and where it's somewhat predictable.

And then there is the great unknown. Several people here I do not know yet,

There is a big unknown there, something - "I feel uncertain there"

and when I make some effort to greet them, it comes more into the domain of the known

or at least it enters the intermediary zone between what we know and don't know.

This intermediary zone, where we try to somehow find meaning or clarity in the world,

that's what art exists for. And dreaming also. when we dream at night,

we try to structure everything somehow and to find our way.

And when I paint or draw, in the back of my mind, a lot of my experiences from the past days

play in the background, and are processed without having to make an effort for that. And...

I believe that the images that emerge, also

serve to process these shadow sides and brighter sides of my experience,

Ich would like to read to you what I wrote for the announcement of this exhibition.

"I am fascinated by the daily experience of living as a sentient being of unfathomable origin,

in a body that is danced together by countless cells and particles, and is married to a whirling world globe.

You and I, we are dancing on our way to nowhere,

and through us, the universe cracks her mysterious jokes, and laughs heartily."

I feel like, when I'm working on my art, that I'm in this dream-like part of reality,

And that is why I'm not such a good organizer - I somehow of like it when everything is sort of vague.

I find exactness almost confusing.

What I also want to share, are two music pieces, about a minute each,

as examples of the shadow and light sides, in a way.

These are two musicians that I often listen to,

one is quite dark, and also nihilistic, and the other is very bright, but with a similar power.

So first, I'll give you the bad news.

The band is called 'Nine Inch Nails', and the song is 'Head Like a Hole'

and the painting back there was inspired by this song.

There. Haha.

That sort of shows it… It's quite dark and heavy, he goes in there and somehow retrieves art from it

and I wrestle with myself when I hear that,

somehow it attracts me very much because it resonates with something in me,

on the other hand I ask myself, "Do I want that in my life, this nihilism?"

I have a choice there. And…

Yeah, I find that an important question, that occupied me lately.

I now want to play another song by the other artist… Oops...

He makes music with a similar power, but he's taken it into the positive somehow.

I found that interesting.

That illustrates to me these polarites that I also see in my art.

On the one hand there is a lot of power, I cannot paint just a peaceful, pretty, wholesome image,

some kind of explosion has to happen for me, and that can go in these different directions.

And when I considered this question of good and evil, I found that this theme goes pretty deep.

I'm reading 'the Gulag Archipelago' by Alexandr Solshenitzyn about the labor camps in the Soviet Union,

where about 90 million people were killed [correction: estimates range from 10 to 60 million].

Why do I say this, in relation to my art, why is that important?

I believe that when we face these 'good' and 'evil' parts of ourselves, inside of us,

and say: "Evil is not just out there in the world, it's also within me

and with every decision I make during my day, I move either towards or away from it."

And when we get to know this within us, and I believe that art helps us by showing us...

these parts of us on the wall, and we can feel, "how does it resonate with me?

Do I want to move away from it? How do I relate to this?"

I believe that when we get to know this better, within ourselves, and

So that when it emerges in our lives, and we are faced with a choice, for instance,

the political situation changes, and you have to decide as a police officer for instance,

will you arrest people that have expressed certain subversive ideas?

I think it's quite important that one is familiar with what is good and evil in oneself.

That is perhaps a bit far fetched, but I think it's important.

As humans we have created very bad systems in the past, and tyranny,

and it's never really far away, it's always possible that we create it again,

so I think it's important that we can make these decisions inside of us, and get to know

the dark and the light within us,

and that we learn to orient ourselves by that somehow.

And I hope that making art makes sense for that reason,

and that it justifies being in my studio for hours, and to put it up on the wall.

pack the kids lunches. I haven't gotten the mail in three days. Should I try to

go off antidepressants ? Maybe I should get a therapist. We are supposed to be renovating our house

but we can't find a contractor

Hell, we can't find money. Is my son watching too much TV? Am I ever going to be able

to get a job? I think I heard a mouse in the basement.

Why is my son breaking out in hives? Can I I get away with the birthday party at

Chuck E Cheese? Did I offend my mother in law? Who left the car door open? Could I cut my

hair at home? Do I drink too much wine? The baby's waking up. Somebody woke up.

Guess I'll have to keep my thoughts to myself. Back to mothering!

She is never going to wean herself, right?

There was a time when even I thought - man, these people are difficult.

They mess up their own lives.

But hang on. We have to consider that the system dehumanizes the person

and the person starts abandoning things that are essential for a human being,

and ends up alienating themselves.

Zé is one of the 500 beneficiaries with housing of the harm reduction program of Sâo Paulo's previous government administration.

Unlike other policies, harm reduction does not focus on the war against drugs, but on rescuing the dignity of the drug user.

Little things start adding up.

I don't know if you guys remember a movie called "Falling Down".

The traffic was only the last straw. The guy was full of issues.

He couldn't see his daughter. He was unemployed, living with his mom.

His wife didn't accept him.

So that was his outlet. He resorted to violence.

But we, unfortunately, bite a very bitter bait -- drugs.

We're living in a time of post-truth.

They say something is the truth, and after a while,

we see that behind that truth exists a much crueler and much more catastrophic truth.

So, okay. The problem is crack. Crack is made from cocaine.

Where does cocaine come from? How is it brought (to Brazil)?

People say we have a 15,000 kilometer border.

We have all this technology to monitor the movements of citizens,

but not the borders?

Since you want to solve the problem, solve the problem at its roots.

Solve the problem at the root, and start to treat those who are ill

Because after the guy has gone to drugs, unfortunately, he has fallen ill.

If we don't sit down and lay our cards on the table

and look for a better solution for our society as a whole,

we're going to keep BARKING UP THE WRONG TREE

Housing programs are part of harm reduction policies and significantly reduce drug use.

Housing is the first step.

Because there the guy will rest, gather his thoughts,

take better care of his appearance.

He'll have something to build on.

Here the guy starts to have some sort of reference,

he starts to salvage the values that he lost.

Taking baths, wearing clean clothes.

People wash clothes in here. There are two tanks.

Some people are kind of (hesitant), but when they see that the others

are washing their clothes, they say, "man, I will too."

I'm not going to be the only one walking around dirty in here.

In here, we were able to admit

that we have a problem.

Out there, you can't really see it, believe it or not.

Because "crackland" involves you in such a way

that you're really just living that experience.

So here we can, you know, socialize.

We choose a day and make some popcorn, watch a movie.

It's helped many people reduce (their use of drugs) here.

There were guys that, on the street, didn't have 10 cents when they woke up.

Here, there are guys who have 10, 20 reais in the morning.

There are guys that spend 5 reais per day.

They're even boycotted because people don't want to sell 5 (reais worth).

Everyone knows the price is 10 reais. But some sell 5 reais.

Why? Because some people insist that they've reduced (their use) and don't want to buy 10 (reais worth).

They can stop, at a certain moment.

But it has to be slow.

Because a person, when they start to use drugs,

they destroy their body slowly.

And so to go back, it has to be slowly too.

It's no use to just take drugs away from the person.

There are people who look over and think

that we've destroying ourselves in here.

Because they've never come inside, man.

You think it's a mad house?

It's a house of people, of human beings.

What should we do?

We shouldn't think about saving a place.

Because saving a piece of land is simple.

Now, saving people - that would really be in our interest.

People are still unsure of what to do with us.

They don't even know if we are people, you know?

They nicknamed us "zombies" and "human trash" right?

But we are sure of who we are,

of what we can accomplish.

And really, you should learn from us.

and we should work together to create solutions.

The didgeridoo is an instrument of Aboriginal Australians.
