2016 Volkswagen Golf R Manual

Closer to the Subie in price is the Audi S3, but like the STI, it's available here only as a sedan. Which leaves the Volkswagen Golf R.

Starting at $37,415, the VW is priced a slight notch above the $35,290 STI, offers hatchback convenience, the new Golf's excellent interior, and handsome, adult styling. Might Goldilocks find Volkswagen's hottest performance hatch the just-right solution she's been looking for?.

The Golf R adds a shade of motorsport-y purposefulness over the GTI by dropping the suspension by 0.2 inch over unique 18-inch wheels, doubling the number of exhaust outlets at the bumper, and applying more aggressive front and rear fascia treatments with unique LED DRLs.

Add 19-inch wheels, VW's adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control suspension, and a nav system with the DSG and you're at $39,910, which puts you within view of the Audi's $41,995 base sticker.

The R, of course, shares its bony basics with the 10Best-winning seventh-generation Golf. Its powertrain, however, is plucked directly from the S3, a 292-hp 20-liter turbo four paired with the latest-generation Haldex AWD system.

Audi calls it Quattro. Volkswagen calls it 4Motion. The Native American lady in the 1970s commercial called it maize. You call it corn.

Grab that cob on the console and stick it in gear, because unlike the S3 (at least for now), the 2016 Golf R will be available with a manual six-speed transmission in the summer.

And it'll come at an $1100 discount over the dual-clutch version. The 2015 cars, available this spring, will be DSG only.

It pains us to say this, but we might just have to recommend the DSG model over the manual—at least if maximum dynamism is a concern. We were significantly more impressed with the power delivery of the nigh-identical S3.

We estimate that the DSG Golf R will make the sprint to 60 in about 4.7 seconds with launch control enabled. Manual cars will likely be about a half-second slower.

Out where it gets twisty, the twin-clutch trans keeps the turbo engine on the boil, and the widely spaced throttle and brake pedals take the joy out of heel-toeing the manual car when it comes time to slow for a bend.

On a more relaxed back road, the pedal gap might not be such an issue, but VW had invited us out to dusty Buttonwillow, California, to take Euro-spec, manual-trans versions of the R for a spin on the track.

There, getting the car down into the proper gear prior to corner entry turned into a bit of a stab-and-pray exercise. A track of many configurations, the version of the course we ran was primarily a third-and-fourth-gear affair.

Shifting issues aside, the R hoofed itself around the circuit best if we manhandled it some, eliciting plenty of yelping and yowling from the rubber.

In comparison with the previous R, which landed here for the 2012 model year, the new R tamps down the tail-happiness and amps up the power.

It's more satisfying to steer quickly than the old car but doesn't feel quite as flat-out alive as the less powerful, front-drive GTI, which has the same quick steering (2.1 turns lock-to-lock).

Our afternoon of abuse suggests that you'll run out of tire before the brakes get notably spongy.

Credit the large brakes cribbed from the GTI Performance Package, which cope well with the extra heat generated by serving double duty; besides hauling the car down with confidence, the binders also work as part of VW's XDS+ system, braking the inside wheels to aid turn-in during fast corners.

We've found that the pedal in fast VWs with lesser brakes will get spongy when XDS+ is working overtime, even if we're not tramping on the center pedal.

Because the Golf R is constructed at VW's home plant in Wolfsburg, rather than its facility in Puebla, Mexico, the R features an electronic parking brake.

As it was before, the new Golf R is its own thing. The question is whether it's a thing you necessarily want.

Its Audi sibling comes off as a shade sharper, Subaru's competitor is magnitudes more violent, and the R's more-fun GTI baby brother costs significantly less. Those three cars all tickle a primal gearhead sweet spot.

In contrast, the R fills a need but doesn't leave you quite as thrilled as you'd like to be.

Why Doesn't MLS Have Promotion and Relegation? - Duration: 4:56.

Perhaps one of the most unique aspects of Major League Soccer is the single entity

structure.

In essence, no team can be promoted or relegated from MLS in the traditional

sense.

Rather, new teams buy into the league, just as Minnesota and Atlanta United did

earlier this year.

While single entity is very in-keeping with American sports -- baseball, basketball, and

NFL all operate in this way -- it remains a contentious

issue when it comes to soccer.

As a nation, the US currently has three major professional soccer leagues: MLS, NASL, and

USL Pro.

They are not linked in the traditional sense, but they are classified as differing

divisions.

MLS is considered the first division, while NASL and USL Pro share second

division status, granted to them by the soccer governing body.

USL had previously been considered division III, but this was changed

in 2017 following a petition by the league.

Although the US does not have promotion/relegation, discourse on the matter remains

intense.

A study last year – commissioned by Silva International Investments, whose head,

Riccardo Silva, co-owns Miami FC in NASL – found that 88% believe that "pro-rel" would

boost American club soccer.

Advocates for the introduction of pro-rel suggest that not only would it aid sporting

integrity, but it would generate billions for the US

soccer economy.

A report from Deloitte released around the same time as Silva International's

study claimed that reworking the soccer pyramid to introduce promotion and relegation

could stimulate changes that would benefit the sport from top to bottom.

"I do think that for the game to realise its full potential in the US, promotion and

relegation feels like part of the solution," said Dan

Jones of Deloitte's Sports Business Group.

However, any change requires the agreement of MLS, who currently accept new teams after

a lengthy process of lobbying which includes a detailed business plan.

Although the approach seems alien, it was a direct consequence

of the landscape in the early 90s.

MLS was the by-product of the US's 1994 World

Cup bid, in which they committed to starting a

professional domestic league.

The organisers of MLS, both in alignment with domestic tradition and in order to generate

financing, adopted the American closed-league model, with a twist: rather than buying

specific teams, investors would take a stake in the league as a whole, which in turn

controlled all the teams.

Those same owners have subsidised the top division in America for years on the

understanding they were buying into a closed system.

Was this to change, their investments would be unstable.

Furthermore, few lower-division clubs have the infrastructure to suddenly

support top-level football, or even something resembling that.​

NASL has attempted to rival MLS, but the league's financial instability has made that difficult

to achieve, with Minnesota leaving to join MLS and Ottawa and Tampa joining USL Pro.

A report as recent as late July claimed MLS spurned a $4billion media rights deal offered

by Silva which demanded the instillation of promotion-relegation.

"As was stated to [MP & Silva Group's founding partner Riccardo] Silva both in person and

in a subsequent letter, Major League Soccer is

prohibited contractually from engaging in discussions about our media rights with other

distributors," said Dan Courtemanche, MLS executive vice president of communications."We

are not in a position, nor are we interested, in engaging with Mr. Silva on his proposal."

That was followed by a joint proposal by Miami FC and Kingston Stockade, a club based in

northern New York, in which they filed a claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)

to require the US Soccer Federation (USSF) to

adopt promotion and relegation across all divisions

in US soccer.

The outcome of which is still to be decided.

Although promotion relegation is not impossible to implement in the US, it looks unlikely

at being adopted at the top level in the near

future.

Hi this is vijaya & welcome to Vijaya's recipes.

Today we'll make Maharashtra's very famous snack recipe " Kanda Bhaji"

We can also call it Onion Pakora or Pyaz Pakora

People like to relish it in either rainy or monsoon season.

So let's make Kanda Bhaji/Onion Pakora/Pyaz Pakora

To make Kanda Bhaji/Pyaz Pakora we have taken 4 finely sliced onion.

Water, 2 cup Gram Flour, 3 tsp Rice for making Pakora's crispy

1 tsp Red Chilli powder, 1 tsp Turmeric Powder, Salt to taste

1 Pinch Baking Soda, 1/2 tsp Carom Seeds

So let's make Kanda Bhaji/Pyaz Pakora

Transfer the onions to a big bowl

We'll separate all the onion slices like this

Adding salt

Mix it well

After mixing salt we'll keep them aside

Once the onion release their moisture then we'll use it, till then keeping them aside

Taking gram flour in a big mixing bowl

Adding Rice flour

Red Chilli Powder

Turmeric Powder

Salt

Using little bit of salt as we have already put in salt in onions

Carom Seeds

Baking Soda

Mix it well

Adding coriander leaves

Mix it well

Adding salted onions

Mix it well

Adding little bit of water

Batter is ready, we'll leave it for 10 mins to get set

After that we'll make Kanda Bhaji/Onion Pakora

Batter is ready

It should be in flowy consistency

Now we'll start deep frying

We've heat up the oil in kadahi and now we'll fry Kanda Bhaji/Onion Pakora

We'll fry the batter with the help of fork

Kanda Bhaji/Onion Pakora are fried

Taking them out in a plate

So here we have Kanda BhajiPyaz Pakora ready

We'll serve them with Tomato ketchup or Green Chutney.

2016 Volkswagen Golf R Manual. Fanboy types are always clamoring for somebody to build a Subaru that Subaru doesn't build. And we get it. Fuji Heavy Industries is not known for its styling prowess or for its finely crafted interiors.

And while Mercedes-Benz—of all companies—makes a credible WRX STI hatchback substitute in the form of the loopy-loon GLA45 AMG, you'll pay all the money and then some.

Closer to the Subie in price is the Audi S3, but like the STI, it's available here only as a sedan. Which leaves the Volkswagen Golf R.

Starting at $37,415, the VW is priced a slight notch above the $35,290 STI, offers hatchback convenience, the new Golf's excellent interior, and handsome, adult styling. Might Goldilocks find Volkswagen's hottest performance hatch the just-right solution she's been looking for?.

The Golf R adds a shade of motorsport-y purposefulness over the GTI by dropping the suspension by 0.2 inch over unique 18-inch wheels, doubling the number of exhaust outlets at the bumper, and applying more aggressive front and rear fascia treatments with unique LED DRLs.

Add 19-inch wheels, VW's adaptive Dynamic Chassis Control suspension, and a nav system with the DSG and you're at $39,910, which puts you within view of the Audi's $41,995 base sticker.

The R, of course, shares its bony basics with the 10Best-winning seventh-generation Golf. Its powertrain, however, is plucked directly from the S3, a 292-hp 20-liter turbo four paired with the latest-generation Haldex AWD system.

Audi calls it Quattro. Volkswagen calls it 4Motion. The Native American lady in the 1970s commercial called it maize. You call it corn.

Grab that cob on the console and stick it in gear, because unlike the S3 (at least for now), the 2016 Golf R will be available with a manual six-speed transmission in the summer.

And it'll come at an $1100 discount over the dual-clutch version. The 2015 cars, available this spring, will be DSG only.

It pains us to say this, but we might just have to recommend the DSG model over the manual—at least if maximum dynamism is a concern. We were significantly more impressed with the power delivery of the nigh-identical S3.

We estimate that the DSG Golf R will make the sprint to 60 in about 4.7 seconds with launch control enabled. Manual cars will likely be about a half-second slower.

Out where it gets twisty, the twin-clutch trans keeps the turbo engine on the boil, and the widely spaced throttle and brake pedals take the joy out of heel-toeing the manual car when it comes time to slow for a bend.

On a more relaxed back road, the pedal gap might not be such an issue, but VW had invited us out to dusty Buttonwillow, California, to take Euro-spec, manual-trans versions of the R for a spin on the track.

There, getting the car down into the proper gear prior to corner entry turned into a bit of a stab-and-pray exercise. A track of many configurations, the version of the course we ran was primarily a third-and-fourth-gear affair.

Shifting issues aside, the R hoofed itself around the circuit best if we manhandled it some, eliciting plenty of yelping and yowling from the rubber.

In comparison with the previous R, which landed here for the 2012 model year, the new R tamps down the tail-happiness and amps up the power.

It's more satisfying to steer quickly than the old car but doesn't feel quite as flat-out alive as the less powerful, front-drive GTI, which has the same quick steering (2.1 turns lock-to-lock).

Our afternoon of abuse suggests that you'll run out of tire before the brakes get notably spongy.

Credit the large brakes cribbed from the GTI Performance Package, which cope well with the extra heat generated by serving double duty; besides hauling the car down with confidence, the binders also work as part of VW's XDS+ system, braking the inside wheels to aid turn-in during fast corners.

We've found that the pedal in fast VWs with lesser brakes will get spongy when XDS+ is working overtime, even if we're not tramping on the center pedal.

Because the Golf R is constructed at VW's home plant in Wolfsburg, rather than its facility in Puebla, Mexico, the R features an electronic parking brake.

As it was before, the new Golf R is its own thing. The question is whether it's a thing you necessarily want.

Its Audi sibling comes off as a shade sharper, Subaru's competitor is magnitudes more violent, and the R's more-fun GTI baby brother costs significantly less. Those three cars all tickle a primal gearhead sweet spot.

In contrast, the R fills a need but doesn't leave you quite as thrilled as you'd like to be.

What's been stopping you from buying the Smart Fortwo, America? The lurch-prone gearbox? The woeful steering? That its seats are so closely spaced that you can smell what your passenger had for lunch? (And, quite possibly, for breakfast?).

If so, we bring good news: Daimler has diligently addressed each and every one of these problems when engineering the third-generation Fortwo coming here in late 2015 as a 2016 model.

Meaning that you're all out of excuses and should head down to your local Smart dealership and join what's certain to be a growing line outside.

Because although Smart understandably highlights what makes the Fortwo better, we can't really report any substantive changes to the fundamental proposition.

Which, we'd respectfully suggest, might have been keeping more Americans from Smart ownership than any of the widely acknowledged niggles of the previous version.

Give Daimler credit for keeping the faith. The new Fortwo is as innovative as before, keeping its tiny three-cylinder engine under the trunk floor, from where it drives the rear wheels.

The new Fortwo is wider than its tight-fitting predecessor but no longer, so its 106-inch overall length retains the ability to park in less than half the span of a standard parking spot.

Engineering and production costs have been trimmed by sharing the new platform with Renault—whose new European Twingo is a sister car—and also by spinning off a bigger four-seat Forfour that Smart currently has no plan to bring to the U.S.

Smart let us try the Fortwo in Barcelona, so we can report that it's certainly suited to life in a congested European city.

As for life outside of a congested European city, we'll have to extrapolate—the entire event was conducted within the downtown area, and if we hadn't sneaked off-route for a blast down a small stretch of urban freeway, we wouldn't have gotten the thing out of third gear.

We can't think of any "drive" event at which we've spent more time sitting at red lights; at least Barcelona offers spectacular buildings and beautiful people to stare at.

We also had ample time to examine the Smart's cabin, which is definitely improved.

The new car's electronic architecture comes mostly from the Renault side of the technical alliance, with the central touch-screen display and most of the switchgear lifted straight from the Clio.

Material quality isn't on a par with what you might expect from something in the Mercedes family; your fingers don't need to travel far to find some greasy-feeling plastics.

But it's far better assembled than the last Smart, and the extra width translates directly into improved shoulder space. Two adults can sit next to each other without mingling their DNA.

The driving experience is both familiar and better. The new Smart is a clear improvement over its predecessor by most driving measures, no more so than with the replacement of the old car's woefully laggy automated manual gearbox.

(For those who've never driven an original Smart, just know that you could speak entire phrases in the delay between ratios.

Frequently these would be obscene phrases about the transmission.) Now Smart offers a choice of either a five-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic. Daimler reckons the U.S.

take will be about 80 percent DCT—a perfect inversion of the anticipated manual-to-auto split in Europe. Both transmissions work well. The five-speed has a nice, light action, certainly once you're acclimated to the clutch's relatively sudden biting point.

The pedals are well spaced for some heel-and-toe rev-matching, as well, although the turbo engine's nonlinear response makes that harder than it should be.

We were only allowed to drive a prototype version of the DCT—apparently it's not yet as far advanced as the rest of the car—but it shifts cleanly when left to its own devices and quickly if you issue instructions by sliding the gear selector into its "manual" position.

The lack of standard steering-wheel paddles is a tacit acknowledgement that this is a dual-clutch-as-automatic, though, rather than a proxy manual.

The steering is also much improved. The old Smart's combination of a slow rack and alarming understeer meant that, at any sort of speed, it felt like trying to control a runaway mine cart.

The new electrically assisted rack is quicker; the front end responds keenly and with enough grip to deal with Barcelona's roundabouts at decent speeds.

There's no sense that the car has its engine at the back, or sends power through its rear wheels; don't expect a miniaturized Toyota MR2. When you do reach its limits, the front nudges wide.

The Fortwo also has a neat party trick in its 22.8-foot turning circle. That's two feet better than a London cab or, more to the point in America, three feet tighter than you can accomplish in a Scion iQ.

Praise falters when we get to the new engine. will only be taking the more powerful 89-hp turbocharged version of the transverse three-cylinder engine, and this felt excessively laggy and gutless at lower revs.

We also managed a run in the naturally aspirated 70-hp model, which, despite taking four seconds longer to get to 62 mph (14.4 seconds, per Smart), felt far smoother and barely slower at urban speeds.

That one's not coming our way, but slow-lane proponents can look forward to a new iteration of the full-electric version. It will follow sometime later, as will a cabriolet model.

The new Smart is as clever as its predecessor, a bit more comfortable, and built to a higher standard. It's a likable city companion, but it still feels like the answer to a question that very few U.S.

buyers will be asking anytime soon.
