How to prepare and cook cardoon | Cynara cardunculus altilis / sylvestris - Duration: 5:15.

Hello everyone.

Let's see how to cook cardoons the traditional way.

Here's a wild cardoon plant.

It is edible but slightly more sour than cultivated cardoon.

Clean it like this.

This is the edible part.

These are cultivated cardoons.

In order to eat them you have to clean the plants like this.

Cut an onion.

Pour a drizzle of olive oil, add chili pepper and sauté the onion.

When slightly brown, add the cardoon.

Add salt and water.

Cook until cardoons are tender.

Cardoons are fork-tender.

They have nothing to envy to artichokes.

I hope you enjoyed my recipe. Until next time!

Sangre de mi Tierra | Capítulo 41 | Telemundo Novelas - Duration: 15:25.

CC: TELEMUNDO NETWORK

That wasn't half bad.

Is my ice princess ever going to thaw?

I don't care.

That suffering martyr face you make?

It doesn't bother me.

Because you had fun with me.

And you will again when you get over that idea

of working with our enemy.

Okay?

I need to use the bathroom.

Go to the bathroom.

Did you eat?

Hey.

No, I'm not hungry.

Are you still worried?

A little, yes.

About her or the wine?

Both.

On the one hand, I tried to keep the winery afloat,

but without Aurora's project, I can't.

I don't understand why she bailed on us.

Anything I can do to make you forget your troubles?

I told you everything you wanted to know about Wilmer.

Pretend I'm deaf and dumb. Tell me again.

Wilmer was...?

In jail, like I told you.

He was a funny dude.

He made me laugh and we became good friends.

First I got out, and then him.

He called me a few times and we met up.

Did he have a job?

Not that I knew of.

At first, he didn't even have money to feed himself.

I lent him some cash, and when he paid me back

we had a hell of a party.

That was a real good time.

The sucker was loaded!

So your friend had money.

Sure did.

Where'd he get it?

Wilmer said some fool he knew had to pay for what he'd done.

Any idea who that man was?

No, that's all Wilmer told me.

He texted him messages all the time

and would laugh at the things he'd send him.

One night, when Wilmer was ----faced drunk,

he told me that guy had committed a serious crime

and had to pay for what he'd done.

He must've had something special in store for him

because he messed with his family.

And family must always be respected.

Goal!

Goal, goal, goal!

Rafita Zambrano scored a goal!

I did it, Dad.

I made the Los Angeles University soccer team.

I made it!

Congratulations, Rafa!

I'm so proud of you.

Congratulations.

Godfather.

You hear that, Dimas? The university!

Son.

Aren't you going to say anything?

The first Zambrano to attend college.

All my hard work was worth it.

You're going to go so far.

I'm so proud of you.

Thanks, Dad.

Rafa, you're going to college?

Yeah!

And doing what I like most. Playing soccer.

Son, have you heard anything?

I didn't make it, Dad.

All the luck was on Rafa's side.

I'm sorry, Leo.

I'm sorry.

Don't be sorry.

Your success is my success.

You deserved to make it more than me.

I didn't understand the scouts.

Know what they said?

That somebody gave up their spot

and it went to me instead of you.

Can you believe it?

What?

Somebody who made the team gave up his spot?

-Yes. -That's weird.

We have to pray for that kid who gave you your spot.

You pray for him.

The rest of us are going to toast.

I'm going to get a bottle of wine.

I'm sorry, that's never happened to me before.

Don't worry, you're just preoccupied and tense.

I've been tense and preoccupied before and it hadn't happened.

Then that means...

You're getting old. That's why it happened.

Are you calling me an old man?

I can prove you wrong. Well, try to at least.

Okay...

But tomorrow, okay?

It was a long day and I want to get some rest.

Juanjo, spoon me.

You know something?

These past few days I wasn't doing well, I realized that...

I was really scared.

Scared of what? Go to sleep.

Of losing you.

I was scared of losing you after that fight we had.

It was so nasty.

But I realized you're the most important person in my life

and that I love you and don't want to lose you.

Honey, what are you doing?

If I have to tell you, then we seriously need therapy.

Where are you going? Answer me!

Let me go. Please, just let me go!

-No! -You're hurting me!

-I won't let you go! -Let go!

No, you're not going anywhere! No!

I won't let you go to him!

I'll kill you first!

You see the things you make me say?

I'm not serious. I didn't mean it.

I could never kill you.

Roberto, I know perfectly well that if you don't let me go,

you'll eventually kill me.

No...

-So just let us go. -No.

Please!

If you run away, you'll never see my son again.

No...

It'll never happen!

-Yes, it will! -You'll never have my son!

-You're a whore! -Let go!

-You're hurting me. -Whore!

Whore!

What are you going to do today? Stay here or go to work?

I don't know. I might stop by at noon.

But only to see how things are going.

You're not going to work?

Nope.

I've worked enough in my life.

You're unrecognizable. That's a compliment.

Yeah.

It's time for me to give the younger generation a chance.

The days of me only worrying about the winery are over.

I want to focus on you and me now, on our marriage.

I love you.

You didn't show up at the vineyard.

That's so irresponsible.

I already told you why I didn't go.

I'm not feeling well.

Honey...

Sere, I'm all sweaty. I told you.

Yes, I know you're sweaty. You're also tense.

I can feel it.

I'm...

I'm upset.

What Aurora did to us with Small New Wine was so rude.

Don't lie to me.

This isn't about Small New Wine.

You're wondering why Aurora kicked us out of her house.

You're imagining things.

Aurora's fine.

How do you know?

Juanjo, Aurora made a decision and she won't change her mind.

Why don't you get it?

She's running away like she always does.

Running like she always does?

What are you talking about?

You know what I'm talking about.

Maybe this time it was different.

Juanjo, Aurora went to Argentina with Roberto.

She didn't wait for you to get out of prison.

She's doing the same thing again.

She's running away.

She doesn't want to stand up to her family or her husband.

She wants to be daddy's little girl and the perfect wife.

That's not true. And you... you know that.

Why are you telling me this?

Are you trying to hurt me or make me feel guilty?

What do you want?

Juanjo, I'm not trying to make you feel bad.

I want to open your eyes so you can see the truth for yourself.

Aurora quit like she always does.

Okay.

If you won't believe me, that's fine.

I'll leave you alone.

PALOMA: "Hello, handsome. We going running?"

Good morning.

Of course I'm going to go running.

It's the first time I look forward to exercising.

I was thinking about you last night...

And this morning when I woke up too.

Me too.

Um...

I don't want be late, so see you at the park.

Bye.

A friend of Wilmer's told us

Wilmer was blackmailing someone.

Wilmer?

That's right, Dolores.

Did you ever notice he had unwarranted amounts of money?

Honestly? I did.

He seemed to have a lot of money,

but he never told me where he got it from.

Do you have any enemies?

Me?

Of course not. I stay out of trouble.

Well, not an enemy, but someone who might've wronged you?

Your boss, Mom.

He treats you bad,

and Uncle Wilmer got upset when he found out.

Shush, sweetie.

He doesn't know what he's saying.

Don't listen to him.

I don't want any trouble at work.

Why wouldn't I listen to him?

He told us exactly what we want to hear.

Alright, son.

Tell me.

Who's hurt your mommy?

-Crisanto? -No.

Roberto?

-Roberto Quiroga? -Yes.

Thank you.

Excuse me.

Is someone here? Excuse me.

Roberto!

Roberto?

Jesus, Mary and Joseph! Roberto!

Roberto! Please!

My God! What happened?

Roberto!

Help!

"This is My Story" Testimony by Ninta Afryani - Duration: 3:22.

Since I was little I often saw my father acted violently.

My parents have separated but have not divorced

but my father got married again.

I stayed in a small city so the news spread out.

I was dating since High School

and was commited to it.

His parents knew and said,

"There are many women out there,

who are better than Ninta."

It felt like I brought shame.

I finally decided to break up.

Then I was dating again and fell into sexual sins.

My friends who knew about it would say,

"It's not that far."

But for me who knew exactly what happened,

I felt I had crossed the line and I was hunted by my own mistakes.

Then it was like, "See? You only bring shame."

"You are not worthy, you are this, you are that."

After that I isolated myself,

That time I realized I was rebellious towards God.

I moved to Jakarta to find a new job.

Then I came to JPCC.

After joining some classes at JPCC,

I decided to join Community of Counselor (COC).

In Community of Counselor (COC) I felt insecure because,

I was scared of being exposed.

I often thought, "Will anyone ever accept me?"

But if I covered it up it won't be resolved.

I challenged God, "Please send someone to help me,

I don't want to be like this anymore, I'm tired."

In 'Breaking the Stronghold' session,

someone hugged me when I prayed,

it was my COC facilitator and she said,

"Ninta are you bound to sexual sins because of your past?"

I felt... embarrased.

But also thanking God because He answered my prayer.

I told her everything I did,

everything that disturbed me.

She said, "It is done and you can be a new person.

You admitted that you are done with it, you can move forward."

I went home with freedom,

I am free from my past and I don't ever want to go back.

As time goes by, God sent me a lot of people.

Women who came to me and shared their story,

that they even had done worse things,

or still just starting to.

But they can't tell anyone.

I thought it was over but one day some of them came,

"Nin, I no longer have an affair."

"Nin, I'm not doing it anymore."

Apparently I have a heart towards them,

I believe that confessing is not easy at all.

But when we decide to confess our wrongs to God,

God will give us strength to go through it.

Though you have a broken home family,

whatever you have done or whatever binds you,

God's plan for you is good.

Benefits Of Owning A Dog For Your Mental Health - Duration: 2:47.

I have to warn you right from the beginning, you might want to get a dog after watching

this video.

Owning a dog comes a number of benefits for your health.

Studies show that pet owners have fewer cardiovascular problems, lower blood pressure and reduced

cholesterol levels.

Part of the reason might be the regular physical activity that comes with taking a dog for

a walk, however this might also be connected to the mental support a dog provides you with.

Almost any type of pet is any instant cure for loneliness.

Taking care of a pet gives you something to do, occupies your mind and forces you to communicate.

If you want a dog to sit, you have to tell him to sit.

Dog owners are also forced to communicate more with other people.

When you are walking your dog and you meet another person walking their dog, you instantly

have something in common.

Studies indicate that 50% of pet owner view their pet as a member of their family and

25% of the participants in relationships reported that the pet is a better listener than their

spouse.

Understandable… a dog doesn't talk back, doesn't judge you or disagree with you.

Plus, it's ready to cuddle whenever you are.

But seriously, this is above all a reminder for all of us that oftentimes when we are

dealing with a problem in our life, we just need to talk it out and we need the people

around us to simply be there and listen.

We all feel the need to be loved and accepted and owning a dog will give you exactly this

type of feeling.

He's always happy to see you when you come home and they will always be loyal to you,

Dogs provide you with a sense of certainty and security that we so desire in this uncertain

world.

All in all, dogs are awesome.

They improve your mental and physical health, give a purpose to your day and with a dog

by your side you never have to feel lonely again.

But before you go and adopt a dozen dogs from the local animal shelter, check in with yourself

as to why you want to get a pet in the first place and make sure you're ready to take

care little guy or gal first.

If owning and taking care of a dog makes you happy, then by all means go do it.

Just don't forget that while your four-legged darling requires your love and attention,

so do the people around you.

And now it's time for the ultimate question: Are you a dog person or a cat person?

Though I guess most people are dog people.. aren't they?

Let's find out in the comments below.

Don't forget to subscribe to ICONIQUE for more psychology of everything and I'll see

you guys next time.

Have an amazing day! Bye!

Have you subscribed to ICONIQUE already?

(Eng Sub) "Is That Your Real Name?"✿ Why Do Hong Kongers Use Western Names - Duration: 5:04.

My name's not Wong Har Wai everyone (a HK actress who's notoriously not good looking..)

It's fairly common to see people using English (Western) names in Hong Kong

I never thought that when I travel abroad

I keep getting asked

I'm like

(I've been using the name since I was 6)

One time after I introduced myself

This English lady said to me

I was like "what"

Being Chinese doesn't mean my name has to be

Ching Chong Ling Long Ting Tong right?

Another time

My family helped renew my passport when I was little

The British guy banned me from using my English name signature

Until my family showed him my previous passport

To prove that I had used that signature before

Then he finally approved

Are you kidding me?

Will you reject Jacky Chan to sign Jacky

or Bruce Lee to sign Bruce?!

Therefore, even if we're not using bizarre English names

Lots of people still regard

Asians using English names as a strange thing

Among my friends

There're 3 types of English names on our IDs (on top of our Chinese names)

Use my idol Endy Chow as an example

The 1st type is

simply the English phonetics of Chinese FULL name

2nd

English phonetics of Chinese FULL name followed by a western name

3rd

English phonetics of Chinese SURNAME followed by a western name

Unfortunately, I'm the first type

My English (western) name is not on my ID

Hence, whenever I get asked

Is that your real name?

I really don't know what to say

Also, sometimes when people ask for your name they ask

The first time I was asked this quesiton

I just went

I was thinking should I say my first name

or my English name (nickname)

The white guy saw me being lost

and changed his question to

Like, how do I call you?

It was so embarrassing

Why do Hong Kong people use English names?

The reason why we use English names in Hong Kong

Dates back to the British colonial period

Where the need of English names emerged at school/ work

It's more convenient for English speakers to call us

Say, English speakers struggle to pronounce

our Chinese full name in Cantonese

Just like my partner

Actually my channel name WHW is my initials

I just found out

My initials are the same as Wong Har Wai

NOOOOOOOOOOOO

My name's not Wong Har Wai everyone

Anyway

The first word of my first name is 可 (Ho)

My partner can't really pronounce it

He really has to force it

Yep, it's hard

Therefore, to not mispronounce our Cantonese names

or not call the English phonetics of our Chinese full name (which is awkward)

The English phonetics of my full name is Wong Ho Wing

No one on earth calls me Wong Ho Wing

Super weird

So they decided to adopt English names

Easier for English speakers to remember and call our names

The practice of adopting English names

has become part of our culture

You know what

In Australia, my surname comes after my first name

I've become Ho Wing WONG

Lots of people think Wing is my middle name

So people at medical centre etc. like to call me Ho

How did you guys pick your English names?

For me

in Primary school year 1

our English class teacher required all of us to choose an English name

My mom then collected a few and let me choose

I read this book last year

I was so touched to find someone who has the same story as me

(I actually never finished the book)

So surprised to learn that the naming of Nelson Mandela resembles mine

He wasn't called Nelson when he was born

He got some clan names before he was named Nelson

I don't wanna mispronounce those names

It was until he had to go to school

To receive British education like us

First day at school

His teacher assigned them English names one by one

She named him Nelson

Therefore, the main purpose of my video

is to teach you how to respond

If someone questions is your name real or not next time

You can tell them

My story's the same as Nelson Mandela

He wasn't called Nelson when he was born

It's because we were ruled by Britain

Adopting English names became part of our culture

Anyway, no need to be offended by the question

Is that your real name

It's totally understandable

Just like us,

we would ask why do Gill Mohinderpaul Singh and

Gregory Rivers (HK celebrities) can speak Cantonese?

Thank you so much for watching

Please give me a thumbs up if you like my video

Also, if there're any questions you get asked by foreigners

that are funny, weird or memorable

Please comment down below and share it with us! :)

See you in my next video!

Hey, it's me Rosie with rebuilding the broken

Sorry I know it's supposed to start at eight o'clock, but I had a few things to do

But I'm so glad to be here and

I've been really really thinking about what we should talk about

Because the topics that we've already covered are

All about getting all of this

back together again and

We were going to talk about the heart and the hearts condition because I think that's really really important so

While I'm waiting for people to see that we're live and join us

I'm going just to talk about a few things that are up and coming all right, so

January we've gone live on Facebook, that's gonna. End as of the first Monday in February

I'm not gonna go live, but we'll be on YouTube

I'll let you know when I decide to go back

To go into live broadcast, but it will be through YouTube, but remember starting in February

so that they may be blessed and they may be able to do what you are calling them to do and

to live and live more abundantly Lord God I

speak against fear I

Speak against doubt I speak against oppression. I speak against negativity

Lord God I speak against a hardened heart

or god I speak against a

Broken mind an unhealthy

mind and

Lord God

I pray Lord God if she would purify us or God continue to have your hand in your way in our lives with God and

That you would continue to pour in us

Help us to stand still when you say stand still and to move when you say move even when we don't know

What's behind?

The next door that we might go through even though. We don't know what's ahead of us even when we're unsure

help us to keep moving forward and

Maybe pour into us pour into us

That we may pour out our God

We praise your Holy Name Lord God. We thank you for everything in Jesus name. We pray amen

All right guys so

I've been thinking a lot about

Just people in general

What's going on what I'm seeing and?

And just reflecting on where was I?

How did I feel when I was going through a lot of the things that I'm noticing right?

Moving forward when you're unsure about things

So God's got a plan for your life

Don't doubt that no matter where you come from where what your circumstances look now

How old you are how young you are God's got a plan for your life and every single step every single

Part of your life is intentional and it's on purpose

He has a path for you to take

But I just want to remind you that it's an option you have a choice

To either go left to go right to follow his lead

to stop and say oh, no, I don't think so you have a choice I

Wanted to share a story of my daughter

so

She was just not not too long ago. Uh I gave her I asked her to

Stop she's messing with her brother to stop messin with her brother her brother was trying to clean up. She was making a mess

she's -

So she she was doing something. She wasn't supposed to be doing and

I asked her to stop

simple

God was said your warning if you do a something you're not supposed to be doing or if you're

Somewhere you're not supposed to be or with someone you're not supposed to be with right

But some of us would stay there, or do it anyways so

She stayed there

next move

Okay, now. I'm gonna give you a choice

You can

Go outside the room and

Do what I said, or you can

Decide to fuss and cry and fight

what I'm telling you to do and

go lay down on your bed, but

I reminded her you have a choice and one of those choices

You're gonna. Have a greater peace

When you're obedient when you're in position when you're in place, no, it's not going to necessarily be comfortable

But you will have peace

Know that you are in the will of God, and he is faithful knowing his character

he is not gonna abandon you even when we're

Disobedient even when we're out of place he doesn't leave us

That's the word

So I said you have a choice and with one of them you're gonna be miserable

you're not gonna be very happy because it's gonna be ultimately something you don't want to do and

What's gonna keep you from doing the right thing being obedient?

is

For some of you, it's fear for some of you, it's doubt for some of you, it's pride and

All of that boils down to

a hardened heart I

Have a demonstration that I'm going to show you in a little bit

But along with your spirit man along with your mental muscles

your mindset

We need to work on our hearts

We want to make sure that the condition of our hearts is in such a place where

We are able to absorb and take in

Whatever God is trying to put in us and work through us

If it's hard imagine a stone so much has happened to you you not let a lot go

Your heart

Metaphorically begins to harden. It'll harden. It'll harden

before long

Anything

Imagine the stone that tries to come and penetrate or tries to come out is stuck

It's hitting a surface that

Will not allow anything to be poured in or come out

That builds a

character of selfishness a mindset of victim woe is me and

Take a second step further

It really doesn't allow you to see a

Hardened heart

Will not allow you to see as clearly

as

a softened heart I

Want to show you demonstration and so you can further understand what I'm talking about

Alright so for you alright

Okay, so this bowl this container represents you right. We're all vessels and

Ideally the way. It works is God pours into you his spirit and

What he pours into you your ultimate job or however you're using your gifts

It's really you just pouring out what he's put into you it's pouring out

This represents a stone heart a heart that's been hardened by life and still remains hard

This were presents a

Soft target

This is our God full of some goodness none of you can see the water and

You can see this this is our family

Friends

Community and the world

This represents our purpose and the work that we're to do

If you have a

Stony heart let's put their heart inside of you and

You're constantly asking God to pour into you right you've gotten up. You believe that you can do stuff

But you haven't dealt with your heart and God pours into you

No matter how much he pours into you

With this heart you honestly can't put anything into

Can you see that job

You're not feeling or fulfilling your purpose

It's gonna be a lot of work and

You're gonna. Ask yourself. Why why isn't it working? Why isn't it working and that can develop?

discouragement that can develop doubt

Now let's try a

Soft and heart

Everybody

Requires a different

Amount of

Whatever your gifts are but look at how much this heart is able to pour out and

So long as you're in position

God is more than able willing

To pour and refill you

This is the impact that you could and can't and will have

On the world

Purpose has been fulfilled

But you've been cleaned this was a clean Bowl so you can pour

What is good into the family into the community should this been dirty a

Lot of times we're still very filthy inside we're still very broken and we're trying to be used in a capacity

We're not ready for yet, and if God were to pour into us that water would just become muddy

dirty

That dirt, that's inside of you

That water remain. It's dirt is dirty and

Anything that you pour out you're gonna see examine your family examine your relationships examine

What effect an impact you leave

daily

Self-evaluate and

That'll let you know

How clean you are as a vessel and you're continuously asking God to use you

Now here's another thing I wanted to show you

Some of us will fear the unknown

But a lot of the times that's not going to tell you the whole story you just have to trust

So I want to take you on a short little journey with me to demonstrate exactly

What I mean by that

All right, so let's say

God told you what he needs you to do and that's to go get groceries

Because we don't see the resources because we don't

Know

What's ahead we feel like it's impossible? Whatever God's calling you to do. It's not possible

So we would either not do it or

Really take our time about it, but guys there's work to be done

Okay

So God needs us to go get groceries

That's our purpose

That's our goal for right now. You'll get groceries

in my mind

god I

Don't know I don't have a car um

How am I supposed to get there? How might you start worrying and thinking about all the what you don't have

What you can't do?

This house of mine, let's say this is the

Trapped mindset that I'm in I need to get out right in order to get to the store. I need to exit this place

Here's an exit

But God didn't tell me to go down this way

but I figure it's an exit, so let me go down this way it looks clean clear safe and

in spite of what God's saying

He's telling me to go down this way

I'm like what god there's an exit right here, and let me go here alright

Now God says stop. No. Don't go that way. He leads you a different way for a reason

I'm thinking this is an exit

This is a dark place

And can you see that?

This is my garage full of stuff

That represents

going

In a direction going down a path that God did not call you - it seemed

Tempting because it was it looked easy it looked pleasant he looked Pleasant

Nevertheless, it was disobedience and guess what I got to go through an obstacle

That's gonna. Be actually a lot more work, and I'll probably get hurt trying to climb over this stuff to get through the garage

To get to outside

Lean not unto your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge God, and he will direct your path

Now let's take the path that

seems longer

god I want to step in to my purpose already I

Wanna make that money already. I want to be married already so we settle

But this path even though it seems longer

is safer

Because he's already prepared it so that there's smooth

transition

Look at that a way out

Let's see I

Still don't know what's out there

All I know is I need to get out

He's telling me to get to the store. I don't have a car

The obedient the obedient be obedient guess what happens

This is how awesome our God is?

Not only will he supply every need according to his riches in glory

But he will give you more than you have room enough to receive and last word

Not only will he supply you with one car

He was applied with - I don't know if you can see that, but there's two cars out here

Which place are you gonna take which riding on take?

If he is calling you to do something. He will supply what you need

But sometimes our hearts are in such a condition where we can't see that we either have rather blind

We have blurry vision

Or we have complete vision

What is the condition of your heart, what is God calling you to do and are you doing it it might seem scary

But don't fight it

Be obedient. It's a better place to be

All right, that's all I got for you guys. I hope that bless you

If you have any further questions, or there's some

Thoughts or ideas that I didn't cover that you really would like me to talk about or

Anything like that. Please make sure to leave a comment. I'm gonna leave this video up or

Get up and dance

You will go better

Again, I just really want to reiterate this. It's going to take effort and action on your part, and it's a choice

Every moment of your lives is a choice

you can't

tell life what to do things are gonna happen, but

Make the right choice, and I believe you know what the right choice is

But it's gonna take work

And it's gonna take effort on your part and when you're sick and tired of being sick and tired of where you're at

you're gonna do something and

Hopefully these videos will help guide you

When you're ready to make a move and start moving forward

It rides

Let's celebrate your victory early and let me just quote this one thing I

But I'm gonna wait until he's able to do that

But this is a boat that he's sent if you don't take anything else with you take this

Some people are so afraid of failure that they avoid success

Some people are so afraid of failure that they avoid success

If you don't start doing something even if you fail

Learn from that and keep moving forward till you hit success

You're never gonna get the opportunity to succeed

Never it's Empire Cybil because you got to start somewhere

All right, don't live in fear don't live in doubt and if you have that heart in heart

God is the only one that can make that soft again

Make sure you're praying make sure you're in your word God will transform you from the inside out

all right guys

Let's do this

Love you be victorious

How the flu turns deadly - Duration: 12:17.

How the flu turns deadly

This flu season is fierce and has already claimed the lives of at least 30 children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although it doesnt count adult deaths, the CDC estimates that 8.

2% of those for the week ending January 13 were due to pneumonia and influenza -- thats more than 1% higher than usual.

Added to those scary stats, the World Health Organization estimates that annual flu epidemicsresult in about 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness globally and 290,000 to 650,000 deaths.

Although the fever and aches may feel terrible, most of us dont die from the flu.

So how exactly does this common illness lead to so many dying? Influenza and its complications disproportionately affect people who are 65 and older.

They account for 80% of the deaths, said Dr.

William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University.

But young children and people who have an underlying illness, such as heart disease, lung disease or diabetes, are susceptible to dying from the flu as well, he said.

There are three ways adults can succumb: The usual flu death is a person who gets influenza, gets all that inflammation in their chest, and then has the complication of pneumonia, explained Schaffner, who added that this is a long, drawn-out process. Pneumonia is an infection that causes the small air sacs of the lungs to fill with fluid or pus.

Though this is the most common route to death, flu can be fatal for more unusual reasons.

Sepsis Much of the systemic symptoms that any of us have with influenza -- the fever, the aches and pains, the sense of exhaustion -- all of those are part of (our bodys) response to the virus, said Schaffner.

The symptoms we experience are an inflammatory response to the immune system soldiers that our body sends to fight any pathogen, he said.

Pushing the war analogy, we all know there is incidental damage that occurs during the course of a war, said Schaffner, and so the flu can also take a perfectly healthy person and put them in the ER in 24 to 48 hours. Flu stimulates an immune response in everyones body, but for some people, this natural response can be overwhelming, noted Schaffner.

Young robust people can have such an overwhelming response that its called a cytokine storm. Cytokines -- proteins that are created as part of the inflammatory response -- create a storm in the body, explained Schaffner: And this cytokine storm can actually lead to sepsis in the person. Kyler Baughman, 21, is one example of that happening.

He died unexpectedly in December at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh after a bout with the flu.

Baughman, a college student, worked two jobs and often posted pictures of himself at the gym on social media.

The cause of his death, as reported by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner, was influenza, septic shock and multiple organ failure.

Heart attack Chances of a heart attack are increased sixfold during the first seven days after a flu infection, a new study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine found.

The study looked at nearly 20,000 cases of flu in Ontario adults age 35 or older.

The risk may be higher for older adults, said Dr.

Jeff Kwong, lead author of the study and a scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences and Public Health Ontario.

Heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is abruptly cut off; this is also called acute myocardial infarction.

Since a few days usually elapse between getting sick and getting a lab test, Kwong said the increased risk is probably within the first 10 days or so after exposure to the virus. The research, which identified 364 hospitalizations for acute myocardial infarction among the flu cases studied, also showed a stronger association for influenza B than influenza A.

We would have needed more cases to determine if the difference was real or just a chance finding, said Kwong.

Though the new study did not identify the reasons why flu might lead to heart attack, Kwong and his co-authors theorize that infectious illness may cause inflammation, stress and constriction of blood vessels, which increases blood pressure.

Threats to children The overwhelming majority -- 99% -- of children under age 5 who die from flu-related illness are in developing countries.

Children in the developed world may not face such high risks, but they are still vulnerable if they develop flu.

Sepsis resulting from flu can cause the death of very young children, said Dr.

Flor M.

Munoz, an associate professor of pediatrics and infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine.

Children have different risks depending on their age, said Munoz, and the most worrisome ages are infants in the first year of life and those under 5 years of age. Whats different from adults is children have a lot of opportunities to not only be exposed to flu but also to spread the flu, said Munoz.

In general, children are the first to get sick when flu season begins, mainly because they are in school and playing with others -- and spreading germs.

They can be completely healthy and still have problems with the flu, said Munoz.

The flu shot doesnt offer the same protection as it does for adults. This is due to the lack of immunologic experience that children have.

The immune system in infants is still developing and it has different responses, lets say, to new things, said Munoz.

Young children will not necessarily have the same response that older children, adolescents or adults have. The same is true for very old people, said Munoz: Thats just a normal way the immune system works. However, the worry whenever a young child or infant gets flu symptoms, including fever, is that they might have a more serious infection occurring at the same time.

Young children at that age can have meningitis, pneumonia, bacterial infections, not necessarily flu-related, said Munoz.

One needs to be more cautious. Certainly, we do tend to see secondary infections, said Munoz.

So a child will start with the flu and the irritation in their noses and throats leave them exposed to more germs and so they develop another bacterial infection --- ear infections, say, or sinusitis or pneumonia.

With the childs immune system already fighting the flu and then another bacteria on top of that, sepsis may be the result.

These are the cases we hear on the news, said Munoz, previously healthy children that dont feel well and in a day or two they die of some complication. Another threat? Though children and adults experience the same symptoms when sick with the flu, children are more likely to get diarrhea and to vomit.

This can lead to dehydration in infants and small children, Munoz said, and it can be life-threatening at such a young age.

What do parents need to know? Every year were going to have the flu.

Every year we have anywhere between 50 and 100 deaths of children from the flu, said Munoz, who is also a member of the Committee on Infectious Diseases for the American Academy of Pediatrics.

This is something to be taken seriously. Parents can make sure their children are vaccinated, she said.

As a mother, if you have something at hand that can protect your child, why not? Its a very safe vaccine -- it is not true that you can get the flu with the vaccine, she added.

Lynnette Brammer, head of the CDCs Domestic Flu Surveillance team, supported Munoz view.

We want to continue to emphasize that theres still a lot of flu activity to come, people that havent been vaccinated should still get vaccine, said Brammer.
