My 8 Favourite English Adjectives | Improve Your Vocabulary | Describing Places & Things - Duration: 10:23.
Hello!
This is Emma from mmmEnglish. In this lesson, I want to share some of my
favourite English adjectives with you!
To be expressive, to show emotion and feeling and to sound more interesting in English,
then you need to start pushing your vocabulary further.
Saying something is "nice" or "beautiful" is good…
But adjectives like magnificent, remarkable or inspirational are so much more meaningful!
So let's talk about adjectives. They're a big group of words in English!
And they're used to describe or to give more information about a noun.
Word order is important with adjectives.
When used next to a noun, the adjective comes before the noun!
Like this:
A or an with an adjective plus a noun.
"An incredible story."
This structure is really common too!
A noun plus the be verb plus an adjective.
"Her recommendations were excellent."
So today, I want to share eight of my favourite adjectives with you,
to help you build your vocabulary when you're describing things - or places!
Now I'm including both positive and negative adjectives so
when things are good, when things are bad and also neutral adjectives,
when things are OK, but nothing special.
All of the adjectives that I'm going to talk about can be used to describe people too
but they're commonly used to describe places and things - so that's what we're focusing on today!
Magnificent. Magnificent.
Can you hear where the stress is? Magnificent.
You can use this adjective when something is very impressive or it's very inspiring or very beautiful.
When it's used with people it can also mean that they are very skillful.
Now see how all of those examples use "very" in front of regular adjectives?
That's because magnificent is an extreme adjective, a really strong adjective.
So you can use it to add emphasis to your emotions.
For example: "That meal was magnificent.
I haven't eaten that well in a long time!"
"We woke up at sunrise and had a magnificent view over the Indian Ocean."
"You were magnificent!" (That's talking about your performance)
Remarkable.
RemArkable. Hear that stress?
Use this adjective when something surprises you or it impresses you!
And it's worth commenting on, because it's unique or it's unusual.
For example. "The Guggenheim is a remarkable building."
"It is remarkable that the pyramids in Egypt were built thousands of years ago!"
"After the car accident, he made made a remarkable recovery."
"His presentation was remarkable - it was unlike any of the others at the conference."
Remarkable can also be used to describe a person, when they're unlike anyone else that you've ever met.
Or they've done something really inspiring, they're really clever.
Like "She really is a remarkable woman."
The opposite is unremarkable - and it's used when something is not special or unique at all.
Obvious. Another good one.
Obvious. The stress is always important with adjectives
because pushing down on that stressed syllable helps you to emphasise the word
and to make the meaning stronger. Obvious.
If something is "obvious", it's really clear and it's easy to understand.
"It's obvious that he's in love with you!"
"It was obvious that she didn't want to be at the party."
(Her behaviour, her body language, her tone of voice.. it was clear that she didn't want to be there)
"Ooops, that was an obvious mistake!"
Acceptable.
Now this is a very neutral adjective, but it's a useful one!
It's used when something is reasonable for what most people would think.
You know, it's generally accepted or allowed.
So for example. "These days, flexible working hours are becoming more acceptable to employers."
"Please let me know if the fees are acceptable. If you're OK with it."
The opposite is unacceptable. So that's a good way to start building on your vocabulary
- learning the opposites of these adjectives. Unacceptable.
"My hotel room was filthy! It's unacceptable!"
Impossible. Impossible.
If something is impossible, it can't be done
OR it's extremely difficult to do.
"No, it's impossible. It can't be done!"
"My boss gave me an impossible task."
"Adam is so badly behaved, it's impossible to take him anywhere!"
"It's impossible to become fluent in English, without practising with English speakers!"
Significant. Significant. Now this adjective can be used to say that something
is important or large.
And it's often used to describe a change that's very noticeable.
For example. "It's a significant building in the city."
"Significant changes have taken place since you left."
"There has been a significant increase in population over the last 10 years."
Ridiculous. Ridiculous. Hear the stress when I exaggerate?
"That's ridiculous!" Dic-diculous.
Also notice how this 'u' - is pronounced as /j/
NOT ri-di-coo-les but ri-dic-oo-les
Now this is a great adjective - it can be used to describe people too, but you need to be
careful with your facial expression and your tone because it can be a negative thing.
It can mean silly or stupid.
"That's a ridiculous idea."
"You look ridiculous. Take it off!"
"It's ridiculous that the shops close at 5pm!"
But it can also mean that something is crazy and it should be laughed at.
Same sentences again. "That's a ridiculous idea!"
"Pfft! You look ridiculous!"
"It's ridiculous that the shops close at 5pm!"
Did you pay attention to the difference there?
The tone and facial expression are really important so that the listener can understand what you mean.
Complicated. Complicated. Complicated.
Ooo this is such a good adjective to learn and use well!
You can use it when something is difficult to do, like you know, it's hard.
Or it's difficult to understand.
Or it could be difficult to deal with or to manage.
"The directions he gave were really complicated."
"They've been going out for years, but they have a complicated relationship."
So, they are my favourite adjectives for describing things in English!

JOSE MOURINHO is refusing to sell Marouane Fellaini – even though Nemanja Matic is set to join Manchester United. And the Special One also made a cheeky dig at Chelsea boss Antonio Contes hairline.
Jose Mourinho is determined to keep hold of Marouane Fellaini.
Marouane Fellaini has emerged as a key target for the Turkish giants.
Matic is on the verge of completing a £40million move from Chelsea to Old Trafford but Mourinho has told Turkish giants Galatasaray that Belgian midfielder Fellaini is too important to be offloaded.
Mourinho, speaking after a 3-0 win over Norwegian side Valerenga, said: "It is easier for Galatasaray to get me than Marouane. He's very important for me.".

"Kale Wrecks Universe 11"- Dragon Ball Super Episode 101 Thoughts - Duration: 3:36.
Dragon Ball Super Episode 101 marked the ending of the initial fight, and it's now time
for the powerful warriors, that's what the Great Priest said at the end of the episode.
The Real Deal is about to begin, and I am totally hyped about it.
The Tournament is shaping up so beautifully, I like how the stage is all shattered!
Universe 11 appears to be the strongest one in the tournament, and shockingly 5 of their
fighters were eliminated today.
Hell Yeah, the action was entertaining.
The likes of Toppo and Jiren can't play games no more, we will finally get to see
them in real action.
Caulifla and Kale has started to grow in the fans.
The highlight of today's episode was their segment, so this Coccota bit*h from The Pride
Troopers had Kale locked in a different dimension, and then formed an entire zone locking these
2 with all their garbage fighters.
I was taken off guard, because I expected U11 fighters to be a bit stronger than this.
However, their battle strategies were actually 5 star, it was refreshing to watch, but they
were just too low in terms of sheer power.
Eventually seeing Caulifla getting beaten, Kale cracked.
Caulifla's attention and praise means the world to Kale, and she was literally getting
wet when Caulifla finally started acknowledging here.
She transformed, but unlike before she got a less bulky controlled form, then as the
United Justice Stream was about to overpower them, Kale goes full Broly, and much to everyone's
surprise even at that state she didn't lose her mind.
A Legendary Super Saiyan with a calm and calculated mind, last time she was just throwing all
her powers, it would be interesting to see what she can do this time.
However, she wasn't able to sustain it for long as soon as their opponents were eliminated,
she fell back to base.
Do you think she will go berserk again?
If she does will she get more improvements, like this time?
I think the main problem is that she has all the dormant potential she will ever need,
but she never really trained hard enough if not at all before.
It might appear illogical for Goku to let them walk away instead of taking them out,
but most Universes are ganging up on U7 for the misconception, they need some temporary
allies like U6, and Universe 6 is going hot as none of their fighters have been eliminated
as of yet.
The way that lady trooper got eliminated was funny though.
She had this dimensional zone around her, and thought it would be enough, 17 picked
it up and bam!
The reason 5 U11 fighters got eliminated just like that, is because their top 3- Jiren,
Toppo and Dyspo are really that powerful.
Fans want to see them in action, and thus the cleaning was required.
The Episode ended as we see a fighter from Universe 2, waiting to get in action with
Goku and the Androids!

Hello friends…Myself Poonam Dedhia, I welcome you all to my kitchen.
Today we are going to make "Gehun Ki Raab"
This is one of the very closet recipe of my mother & I've got this recipe from my mother.
So let's start with making it.
This is a very simple recipe with very few ingredients. Wheat Flour
Cumin Seeds, Salt, Buttermilk, Water, Coriander & Mint Leaves.
We are taking 3 tbsp Wheat flour in a non stick pan.
And we'll dry roast it on the low flame so that it doesn't taste raw.
We have to keep roasting it on the low flame unless we get light pink colour.
As you can see its perfectly roasted now
It has got its light pink colour too.
Now time to add other ingredients in it
But before that we'll keep the pan aside from the flame
Adding 1/2 Cup Normal Water in it
Mix it well
Don't worry about the lumps, as they will break down moment the mixture will start getting cooked.
Put the pan back again on the flame and add approximately 2 Cup Regular Buttermilk.
This will add a sour taste to the dish
Let it boil properly for approximately 2-3 times.
Along with this we'll add a pinch of crushed Cumin Seeds ( crush with hand) into the boiling mixture.
So that it releases its best flavour.
Also adding salt to taste
Buttermilk was without salt so I'm adding the salt accordingly.
Now we'll let it boil for 3-4 mins.
As you can see it has got good bubbles that means it's well boiled now
Adding freshly chopped herbs in it. Finely chopped coriander leaves
Along with finely chopped mint leaves.
Gehun ki Raab is almost ready and its time to serve now
So our Gehun ki Raab is ready
