hello it's Karen Burniston here with my monthly designer challenge video this
month we have a theme of Hip to be Square so everyone will be using squares
in their project and this was the perfect time to do a Spinner Square card
my concept for this card was to do a double window so that on the front of
the card you see all those layers and then the scene reveals itself with the
spinner arm as you open it and you can check out all my designs at karenburniston.com
I chose to make a 5 by 5 square card so I need a piece of
cardstock 5 by 10 scored in the middle for folding and then to that I am going
to add some patterned paper. Each of these pieces is 4 and 3/4 by 4 I'll use my
tape runner all over the back of one of the pieces of patterned paper and put
that inside the card leaving an equal border at the top and the right side
then for the front of the card I want the pattern paper in the same location
but just one line of tape along the side and then leaving that equal border at
the top and the two sides I'll still be able to get in between the two layers
later to add a transparency over the window. The Spinner Square pop-up die set
includes 10 individual dies and one thing I like to keep with my dies is a
piece of cardstock that is one inch wide that's two and a half centimeters
what that's used for is if you'll put it up next to the fold and then place the
second largest square die right up butted next to that cardstock that is
the perfect location to line up with the pop-up in the closed position so that's
just a great little time-saving trick is to use that little one-inch piece of
cardstock to place your die then you'll also want that temporary tape on it so
that it doesn't move when you use a die cutting machine and any die-cutting
machine will work anything that can accommodate a wafer-thin die I am using
a Sizzix Big Shot I do suggest rolling it through twice when you're making
double layered windows like this let me show you this die because it does have a
decorative feature on both sides of the cut line so that your windows have a
little press stock decoration around the outside
I can still get between those two layers on the front of the card to add some
tape runner and that will both hold my transparency in between the two layers
and then with a little bit of extra tape runner I can go ahead and seal down the
paper
feel free to roll the mechanism die through twice on your machine to really
define those score lines I noticed when I was teaching with this die set that
some people's machines just didn't have as much pressure as mine and they needed
to roll it through twice to really see those score lines. On top of the pop-up
will be my large square that's the largest square in the set but then I'm
also going to nest in these smallest square in the upper right corner just
leaving a little bit of gap between the two dies tape those in place and roll
them through and then just a little tape runner behind the square opening and add
a transparency
okay I will add some X's to my mechanism in the five panels that will eventually
get adhesive. Okay let me point out where those five X's should go on the left
side of the mechanism you've got two x's one in this square and one down here
then you've got your tapered right tab you've got this little tiny tab up here
and the X in the triangle below the perforation. The first fold
I'll work is the one that is right between the two triangles so that one
goes across the piece just like this okay I'm going to pinch that down and
leaving that folded I can now find my diagonal folds and fold through both
layers so I'll put my thumbnail right in that diagonal fold and then just fold
both layers up and over and I can work that in both directions because I'm just
trying to define those two triangles so now what I open it I can really see
those two triangles
okay I'm gonna slow this down so you can really watch what I'm doing here I'm
adding some glue in the triangle that has the X in it so just that one
triangle that has the X staying within the score lines I'll add my glue then on
the perforation line I'm gonna fold the square up and over and in to that
exposed glue and see the square is split it has a little cut line in it so it's
really just the side where my thumb is that is being glued down you see this
side of the square is just loose and that's how it should be. Now here's what
we want to do we want to pinch that triangle that I've just attached and
twist it down into the piece and look what happens half of the square goes
towards the outside of the piece and the one that I just glued down goes
underneath the piece so that's the spinner right there see that so as those
triangles come back up again it'll spin the square and when it's closed they'll
collapse down into the piece. Now let me bring it back up again let's let's start
over again I'm gonna come around the table to your side of the table so that
I have my hands in the same position you would. I've got my right hand pinching
that little triangle if I kick my right elbow up in the air
it helps me spin that square counterclockwise which collapses down
the triangles and that's what spins your square so hopefully that helps a little
bit with this section I know teaching it that's the only part where people get a
little confused but once you get it you get it. What you're looking for is you're
looking for that vertical fold there to collapse those two triangles down into
the piece and in the process of doing that they will spin the square. Now the
beauty of YouTube videos is that you can pause them, you can rewind them, you can
even watch them slow motion if you need to so however many times you need to
watch that to get your square spinning do that first and then let's move on
okay working the folds next to our X tabs so each one of those will be a
mountain fold which means you're folding away from yourself so you're just going
to find the scores that the die has made you've got your three outer X tabs
and then we'll skip those to for now and go out here and do this one
so again mountain-fold and make sure that you find the actual score line that
the die has made so don't make up your own. If you take this side of the
mechanism and you just pivot it it'll find that little fold between the cut
lines for you so see that little small fold it's right there but not all the
way across it's just in between the two halves of the mechanism and then there's
one last fold and it's a little bit higher than that one that one should
also be a mountain fold and the combination of those two folds allows
you to take this half of the mechanism and basically just collapse it down and
when you do that the ends will line up next to each other so see out here on
the left side we now have those two X panels ending in the same spot if we
don't do that little zigzag fold then they end up not in the same spot so
before we put this in the card we want to do the zigzag fold so that they end
up in the same spot. Now before I put my mechanism in the card I'd like to add
some sand along the bottom so I'm just using a sea sponge to add some texture
to some panels of Kraft cardstock and then the Nature Edges die set is
just perfect for cutting the tops of those panels. I started with panels that
were 4 and 3/4 inches wide and then they were about an inch and 3/4 high but then
of course I cut that down using the edge
once I have my sand pieces in then I can add my mechanism inside the card now to
do that I'll add glue all over those two left X panels and then what I want to do
is looking underneath there to kind of see about where the edge of my window
opening is that's about where I want the bottom of the mechanism to be and then I
just want the ends of those X panels to be right in the fold of the card and
then carefully holding it so it doesn't slide I'm going to press the left side
of the card against that exposed adhesive and just press it really well
until it sets up so what that's done is it is attached those two X panels to the
left side of the fold and now I can see my other two X panels and in both cases
I should see a blank panel next to the X panel in the closed position so in other
words if it looks like this where you can only see the X panel that's not
right you need to move it over until it's the X panel and the one next to it
that are both in that flat position and then the glue goes just on the X panels
themselves. So that was just about placement - that making sure you could see
those two blank panels next to the X panels. Then I'm going to hold those flat
close the right side of the card against that exposed glue. I am notoriously
impatient with glue. It's surprising that I use it so much because I am impatient
but as I open it I could see that my little tab didn't get enough pressure
there so I'm going to give it a little bit more and in fact I can even go in
with my finger in the open position and just press that tab down another thing
you can do is you can actually open the card all the way up just kind of go
slowly and that will give you the opportunity as well to make sure you've
got a good secure connection on those two tabs
the inside greeting is a stamp from Prickley Pear it says "you are my sunshine"
and I'm just using my Misti to stamp that onto white cardstock then I'll use
the largest square die again to make sure that the width of that is the
correct width to fit on top of my inner square
I'll need just a thin line of glue because I don't have much space between
the window and the edge of the square and then for the top edge I'll just
fussy cut using my scissors leaving a little border around the letters. Okay
you use the rectangle that comes in the set to turn that little spinning square
into a spinning arm and you do that by just adding the adhesive kind of like in
the shape of an L so you want to have it on the left side and the bottom side but
not in that upper right quadrant where it collapses down into the triangle and
then just lining up the corner of the rectangle with the corner of the
spinning square then you can see now that as the card opens it spins out to
the right if you need it even longer you would just add another rectangle to it
and then you add adhesive to the uppermost platform and that's what's
used to attach the big square to it and in this case I just want to choose a
location where my second window is kind of in the upper right corner of my first
window and I don't want to see any of my greeting so in the closed position since
I'm using glue I can kind of slide it around until I like the position and
then give it a good press
now I've decided to add the scalloped square to my spinning arm and I want
that to line up with the window in the closed position so the way I'm going to
do that is I will add some adhesive out to the end of my spinning arm so just
putting my hand underneath there so I'm not giving too much pressure against
that piece I just want to make the end of that arm sticky then what I can do is
just place that rectangle - hold it up behind the window in the place where I
want it in the closed position - carefully close the card and then that will attach
the square to the spinning arm so that when it closes you don't see any of the
scallops but then when it opens you can see them
all
and then I'll also use that large square die to cut my last piece of sand into a
piece that will fit along the bottom of the square and I'm just gonna have the
left edge kind of match the contour of the sand coming in from the left side of
the card so just make that kind of a little extension of that. I've assembled
the Sun from the tropical scene die and that's the perfect size to fit down on
that transparency window so that Sun will just float in the opening and then
you'll be able to see it both in the closed position and the open position
so the small palm tree die comes in the palm tree pop-up set and it cuts a small
trunk that points to the left but you can also flip it over and use it to the
right and if you'd like it to still have that cool emboss feature on it just move
the paper to the flat side of the die when you emboss. So the paper goes
against the rubber mat then your die and in this case blade-side-up. Now on the
palm frond itself I can just do that in the usual manner just keeping the die
over the paper the paper always goes against that squishy rubber mat and then
make your usual sandwich for embossing in your die cutting machine and then
when it comes out you'll have that raised texture even though you've
flipped the piece over so that it faces the other way and then when I add ink
you get that raised texture I'll start with a left swooping palm
tree and I'll put that on the front of the card so that the fronds overlap the
window a little bit but don't obscure my Sun too much
I'll add a little pop dot in the middle of the palm tree so that it gives a
little dimension then inside the card when I open it I need to make a right
swooping palm tree to basically go exactly over the back of that first one
then another right swooping palm tree on the pop-up square so that I can see it
through the window and then my final palm tree which is a left swooper I'm
going to put that on that spinning square and kind of choose a location
where I like how where it ends up when the card is open so that it kind of
looks like it's planted in the ground and you know at a nice angle but I want
all of that green fronds to basically be in the center of the square those are
going to be visible in the closed position so I just want that to look
like more foliage. The crab is from the Sea Animals set and I've just used a
little glue behind her legs and then she's gonna ride in on top of that palm
tree so she's gonna move with the spinner square
so my finishing touches were to add "just wanted to say" using Word Set 4 and
some hearts and the palm trees now this one's actually on the
transparency so I put another one on the back of the transparency as well so that
you don't see the adhesive and then coconuts and the other palm tree.
A little Wink of Stella glitter pen on the crab and the Sun. So I think this is a
fun little card that would be suitable for almost any occasion just any time
that you want to send something to someone to brighten their day. It is a
five by five square card which means it will fit nicely in an A7 envelope. It's
not particularly bulky and should mail for a single stamp. So think of the
possibilities of this technique. It doesn't have to be a tropical card. What
it is is basically a double reveal card. So if for instance instead of putting
the Sun or the item on the transparency you put that item in the background of
the card then you wouldn't see it in the closed position but then as you open it
something spins out - that's reveal number one - and then something is viewable
through the window, which would be reveal number two. So lots of possibilities with
this technique if you click on the website link you'll
