I'm not going to say that it's a first having
an engineer in a veterinary group, because in a way, I've seen it happen not only in veterinary medicine, but also in other courses,
but it's daring, isn't it?
So I'm very happy for the invitation. Thank you all.
And I believe that what I have to say to you
can make a big difference, maybe not now,
maybe not at the moment when you are still
undergraduates,
or that you are still starting your careers, but in the future,
when you realize the need
for managing your own business.
In engineering, I didn't learn
to manage any company. Law people
graduate, and they don't have courses on managing,
in veterinary, in medicine, in psychology, this is true in all
of Brazil and the world. Except that when we get our diplomas,
and crash into the real world,
everything we learned in school
is important, extremely important, but
with time, you see that's not all of it,
there are other things, and as much as you have
the skill, as much as you have the vocation,
as much as you have all the knowledge in the world,
in that specific subject, you'll be lacking.
It'll be lacking for your company to be a success, or for you to
manage your clientele, for you to have results
at the end of the month for your company.
So this is what I want to show you now.
This first step in understanding
Because in the world of veterinary medicine, of engineering, of business,
everything, absolutely everything,
revolves around the project.
What are these projects?
Where does this come from?
Why manage projects?
In our case here today, is putting together a clinic
a project? It's a tremendous project.
Is creating a marketing campaign
to get new clients a project? It is.
Is installing a new equipment that maybe revolutionizes
in the area where you're working
a project? It's a project.
And why do that? Because in our lives
everything revolves around this. So you can have an idea,
every year, around 10 trillion dollars are
spent with projects.
This is equivalent to about 20 to 25%
of the GDP of all the world's wealth,
involving over
16 million people. And this is not new.
If you think about the origin of project management,
the origin of projects, you can look
all the way back. Maybe the first examples
that come to mind are the pyramids,
the Great Wall of China, all this is true,
all these are projects, but if you want to
go a little bit further back, you'll also find
with a more religious or biblical gaze, if you look at the book of genesis, there
in the first chapter, there's Noah's ark.
can you say that noah's ark was a project? it was, right? it's written there.
This has been around for a while.
But a methodological, structured, scientific
way of doing a project, that's recent.
It's from around 70 years ago
and the big historical mark we use
is World War II,
which originated subjects such as project management,
strategic planning, logistics.
70 years is a short time for new knowledge,
it's very little time for a science
that's changing, that's growing,
that's transforming and improving, a lot of it
because of the technology we have today
30, 40 years ago,
in engineering, which is my field, students
didn't have a calculator,
they did calculations with slide rulers. I don't know if you've seen them,
but they're a pre-historic instrument that lets you do divisions and
multiplications with a ruler, there were no calculators.
Today, you have computers.
We have computers in our pockets,
which have enormous processing capacity,
that do all these calculations, and what else?
That can handle communications
like never before. A communication that
is good and bad at the same time. You send a message
on whatsapp, and if the boyfriend doesnt reply within
30 seconds, it's a crisis,
there's already a "talk". Well, this is changing
with time, these new technologies
bring new challenges, new solutions.
And in the past, while we were involved
with one or two projects in a recent past,
today this is no longer true.
Today, everyone here, whether they know it or not,
whether they want to or not, is involved
with several projects, many projects. Projects that
several times are multicultural,
involving people from several countries.
For example, you do a post-graduation course,
you do your doctorate outside of Brazil,
is that a project?
It's a project. There's a beginning,
there's an end, there has to be planning,
another university, with other people,
with another culture. And if in the corporate world,
these companies survive on projects,
including veterinary clinics, if you don't know how to manage them,
from international standards,
that certifications provide, you'll have serious trouble
real trouble,
in succeeding.
Today, we're in an extremely
competitive environment,
which changes, and generates pressure on us all the time,
be it as a business owner or an employee.
Because we also have to outdo ourselves.
A market that demands
a high correctness rate, an ever improving
quality rate. And how do you improve
your company's productivity?
How do you improve your employees' productivity?
Of the veterinarians that will coordinate with you in the future?
Via projects.
Well, what is a project then?
If we put it into a definition...
Project is a temporary effort that has a beginning and end,
it starts and it finishes,
and produces a result, a unique service
A project doesn't repeat itself.
What is repeated is the process.
In our case, project does not repeat itself.
It uses resources, is directed by people,
composed by planned activities,
coordinated and interconnected.
exposed to risks,
uncertainties and interests, following parameters related to
time, cost and quality.
Wow! It seems like a complex definition,
full of new terms maybe,
not for me, but we do this every day.
When you're planning your daughter's birthday party,
you're doing a project.
When you're planning the graduation barbecue,
or graduation party, graduation ceremony, that's also a project.
And we're not going to use that in our clinics? Yes, we will.
How are they born? Where do these projects come from?
From a requirement from the market,
from a need of the company to improve,
from a change in technology.
An example: who knows what Netflix is?
Everyone, right? Nowadays, I
practically don't watch open TV
anymore.
I come home, early,
turn on to Globo News to watch the 10 o'clock news,
when I come home early, I watch it a bit,
then I go and watch Netflix.
This revolutionized it for us, didn't it?
The way we watch television, entertainment?
And the amount of projects? Netflix was a big project.
But the amount of projects it generated
within organizations
that were affected by netflix, by the competition?
We're immersed in this cauldron.
So because of a change in technology, because of an awesome demand,
due to a demand from the client.
Projects are born from several sources,
but they also die.
Projects must end!
And how does a project end?
When it achieves its goal, ok,
or when it can no longer achieve its goal.
when it becomes not viable or
when reaching the objective no longer matters.
A wedding, the wedding party,
what's the objective of the party at the end of the wedding?
It's a nice party so everyone can be happy.
And then you have a fight with the bride and there's no more wedding.
Is there a need for the party? No. The project is over.
Projects can also work and they can not work.
I wanted to show you this real quick,
an example of a project that's very successful.
And it's something of a commercial,
shall we say, of
a project that I did, so I ask you for permission to
show this to you, something that I understand to be a success.
so you can also see... that if he does this, then he
must know what he's talking about.
So, a relatively recent project,
started in 2006,
and it started like this...
It started like this.
Then look at the result of the project.
Can you see it?
This is Lysinho.
It's my best project. Along with another.
I loved this type of project so much that I made another
which is this one:
This is project Nina. This is all a project.
Now, you have the term for opening the project,
the document that officiates the existence of the project,
you have it all written down,
For children, that's the birth certificate.
What do you have there?
Name of the project: Nina
Project manager: the father.
Project team: the mother.
And there's other data related to officiating
the existence of that project.
But there are projects that go wrong, right?
There are projects that you say: didn't work.
I'll show you an example here.
Maybe you've seen this in some email,
someone may have gotten this, so I'll ask you a favor,
those who haven't seen it I think will like it.
those who have seen it, act surprised.
What's the project? This one here.
What happened?
A guy bought a new car,
with sensors for reverse,
and decided to park his car there
near the river.
He backed up and the sensor didn't beep, and he fell in the water.
And there's the car, I don't know if you can see it,
the car with the wheels up,
and god knows what the project manager is doing on top of the car.
Well, what's the project? Getting the car out of the water.
The objective? Getting the car out of the water to take it to the mechanic.
What's the reach of this project?
What is necessary, what's the work required
so that I can reach the goal?
You have to go and hire a tow truck, a crane,
tie the car, which is under water,
hoist the car, put it in the truck and send it to the mechanic,
in a tow truck to send to the shop.
Okay. So we go there and tie the car, start to hoist the car,
you can see it's a popular car,
how much does a small car weigh approximately?
A thousand kilos?
Yeah, but when it's filled with? Air.
What was it filled with? Water.
What happened?
Now you...
Did you change the objective of the project?
No, right? The objective is the same, getting the car out of the water and sending it to the shop.
What's changed? The scope of the project.
Now you have to get the car out of the water and send it to the shop. First you have to get the truck out that's on top of the car
Okay, so what do you do?
Now you hire a
another tow truck
and you'll tie the car
which wasn't dented, and now is.
You'll tie the car and hoist it
You'll put
it in a tow. And then you'll go and get the truck that fell into the water
You'll hoist that tow truck,
which should weigh how many kilos?
12 tons? Kind of...
12 tons when it's filled with? [air]
What was it filled with?
Water, right?
What happened?
Look at that! Then you call another tow truck
to hoist...
This is what's called the legacy of the project.
Look at the massive mess!
And if you don't know how to manage these projects well, this will happen in your life
What is project management then?
What is managing a project?
It's using your skills
applying tools and techniques
skills, project activities
in order to satisfy
these requirements and reaching
the needs of the parties involved.
The most important term we have here
is the reach
Why? Some people get confused
thinking your goal when
managing well a project
is exceeding expectations
No, It's reaching them
It's doing that which you promised you would do
Why? Because when you do more, you're using
more time, if not more time,
certainly more money
It creates an unnecessary relationship with the client
who, in the next project that you do,
that client will be expecting what?
that something extra.
That thing you did to please him,
to captivate your client. Many times,
it creates an obligation
that you'll have to do forever. So, do
that which you set out to do. Deliver
what you promised to deliver. Do
it the way you planned. You don't need to go beyond.
The success of this project of yours
it will also be measured by this. Why?
What is the success in your project? What is the success in implementing
a new clinic?
The success in buying a new equipment and start using it
The success of having that new equipment working
earning your company money
The success of finishing your doctorate abroad...
The success of your projects... what is success?
It's very relative.
This has to be thought of from various perspectives
It's not just reaching a single goal
You have to think about the repercussion of this. On how
much this will impact not only that moment, but the future.
And who was impacted by the project. Why?
Because, depending on how you look at it
this success can be very big
or it can look like a failure. It could also be a
massive failure. There's a phrase that I put here
I don't know if you can see it, but it says
this: "The wolf will always be bad if you only listen
to Red Riding Hood's side." There's so much more
that we need to pay attention to.
Believe me... Looking at this subject will
make a difference in your lives. And when do you have to start looking at it?
In college. Planning your future,
seeing what path you have to take to get
to your objective and using the correct tools
to reach it. Ok? This is what I wanted to tell you...
A kiss to all and thank you
for your participation...
