Hi, I'm Rob.

Hi, I'm Mo.

And I'm Pendo.

Today we're going to be talking about getting involved with clubs and student organizations

on campus.

Students from all four schools: Barnard, CC, SEAS, GS, can be involved in over 500 student

organizations.

There are performance arts groups, student government, identity based clubs, pre-professional

organizations, activist and advocacy groups, Greek life, clubs sports, and more.

And they're all ready to welcome you, the incoming students, into Barnard and Columbia.

We'll be talking about a few of the clubs and organizations that we as committee members

are a part of.

So one of the things that I'm most involved with on campus is the poetry and writing community

at Barnard.

I help to run the Barnard Writing Collective, which is also the Barnard and Columbia Poetry

Slam Team.

I'm involved in the Undergraduate Recruitment Committee.

We mainly give tours around campus during the school year.

I'm also an engineering tour coordinator which means that I help to run and organize what

the engineering tours look like.

It's just a really great opportunity to show off your school pride, but to also engage

with incoming students and kind of see ways in which that you can help further guide their

college selection process.

So, I'm involved with a dance group called Raw Elementz.

We're a hiphop dance group on Barnard and Columbia's campus.

We perform both on and off campus.

We practice about twice weekly, and my favorite part about being on Raw is the Rawcus showcase

that we host in April where we invite all of the dance groups at Barnard and Columbia

to come perform in front of an audience of about 500 students.

My one piece of advice for getting involved is... especially like in your first semester

or first year, think really broadly, and just about anything that you're maybe even vaguely

interested ... just even go to like the first couple of meetings.

Throughout your years you'll find yourself fine-tuning that list.

I agree.

During your first year, you should try to think as broadly as possible.

As you get older and you become a second or third year student, you should try to fine-tune

that down so that you can really devote all of your energy to one or two things.

That's how you get the most value out of clubs on campus.

I think my advise would be to definitely look at clubs that have to do with what you're

studying, but also look at clubs that are just things that you can do for fun because

I think that's really important especially your first year...

finding things that are academic but also finding things that are relaxing or just make

college more fun.

So, we only represent a few of the clubs on campus, but if you have any questions about

these clubs or anything else, feel free to message us, and we can put you in contact

with the people on campus who are involved in all of the 500 clubs at Columbia and Barnard.

To find out more about any of the clubs and organizations on campus, be sure to attend

at least one of the club fairs during the first week of classes.

The Barnard club fair will take place on Wednesday September 6th, and the Columbia club fair

will take place on Friday, September 8th.

Be sure to check out both because almost all clubs are available to students from all four

schools.

Learn Python Episode #2: Mac/Linux Installation - Duration: 6:59.

So, the first thing that we need to do to get into programming in Python is

installing it.

So, let's go ahead and discuss about the three different ways that you're going

to be installing it.

First, we're going to cover Mac because that's what i'm using and so it's

easiest to show you how to do it. So, what you're going to do is open up terminal

which I've moved into that folder and put right here. Now, if you haven't installed

Homebrew, what you're going to do is run a Ruby command that's going to download

and set it up. So, basically what Homebrew is, is a package manager that you

can use to install a lot of packages. So, if you're used to Linux basically on

Linux if you want to install a package you don't need to go all around the

internet and search for packages on websites and then download from shady sources

and get viruses, that's just a bad construct of computer operating systems,

but unfortunately that's how Windows works and so i'm going to show you guys

the right way to install in Windows as well. Using Linux or OS 10 you're going to

be installing through terminal. So, first setup Homebrew, this is how you do it,

come to brew.sh and it's going to give you this line of code here. You just

paste this in terminal, run it, it's going to install brew. Once you've got brew

installed what you're going to do is run "brew install python" Now that's how easy

it is.

OS 10 does ship with a version of Python but the the version included

in OS 10 is 2.7 series and I think it's actually an old really something

that's like to 2.7.5 or something like that so it's pretty old.

At least I think it was that. We can actually run "--python version" here, so okay

so the version that OS 10 El Capitán ships with is 2.7.10. When you run brew

install Python it's going to install python 3,

that's the command that we're going to have to be using because there's already

a Python version installed, so we're going to be using Python 3 and you can

check the version we've got 3.5.1 that's the version that

homebrew is going to install for you. Now similarly if you're on Linux what you

would do

there's a few different ways because there's a few different package managers.

So if you're on Arch Linux I don't think you're gonna need help setting it up, and

actually a lot of Linux distributions have Python/Python 3 pre-installed, so

you can just run "python --version" and "python3 --version"

and see what version you have installed, you might need to upgrade, it it might be

fine. If you have 3.4 you can follow along with this course I don't think

there's that many differences between the two versions and there's definitely

not code-breaking differences, so that shouldn't be a problem.

However, if you do notice that you're having a problem you could upgrade

the version of Python either through the repository or otherwise. If you're on Ubuntu you're

gonna be using the apt-get command, so you'd run "sudo apt-get install

python3" That's going to install Python 3 for you. If you're on Fedora I

believe it used to be yum, I think it's dnf now.

Yeah, so let's just review exactly what commands you're going to be using, I

think it's like dnf install.

So, you can still use yum I guess, ok so you can use yum to install. So, what

you're gonna do is we're gonna run "sudo yum install" and then I believe the

package is just called python3, Python 4 is going to be pretty amazing but

right now we're using Python 3. So, there we go. Now if you're on Arch

and I said I don't think you need any help getting it setup but just for you

know if you are new to Arch you'd run "sudo pacman -S python3" but

again

python3 should be pre-installed, so you shouldn't even need to do any of this

but if you do that's gonna do it. Now on Windows you do need to go download a

file from the internet and run it, the the difference between what I said

before what I'm saying now is this is not a shady location. So, what you're

going to do is go to python.org, go to the download sections, and if you just

hover over this it's actually going to show you a drop-down and you can choose

what platform you're on. So you would choose windows and they actually have a

3.6 which we're not going to we're not going to be using because this is in

alpha. So,

click latest python3 release python 3.5.1, it's going to take you to this page

and basically give you a changelog and whatnot.

If you go down here make sure you get the version that's compatible with your

system. If you have a computer that is not obsolete it should be running a 64-bit

operating system which means it has a 64-bit processor. S,o you would download

this one right here,

Windows x86 64 executable and what that's going to download is an .exe file

which you can use to install the program. If you're running a 32-bit

system you're going to download this one just the x86, and yeah just install it.

Now, there is one note on the installation, when you run the

installation there's going to be a

certain step where you have some checkboxes and one of them is going to

say add python to the path variable, make sure that's checked because if it's not

checked if you try to run Python in the command line you won't be able to

because it won't know where to find this mysterious Python command. So, by

checking that box basically it tells windows where the Python binary file is

located,

so you want to make sure Windows is aware of where that file is. And that's

all there is to installing it. To confirm that you've got it installed open up a

command prompt to terminal and just type Python3 and it should drop you down into

the interpreter, which we're going to be discussing in the next video.

Energy Talks - Improving Federal Processes Using Lean Six Sigma - Duration: 14:12.

I was worried. I thought I was going to be talking in with a scientific crowd, so I

said I got to get some geek points, so I wanted to wear my lab coat, I got the bow

tie, I got a pocket protector, which these are hard to find. I was going to even

hang a slide rule on me, but you know I figured the millenials wouldn't even

know what it was I probably wouldn't get any extra points, but it's good to be

here today. Even though I have a PhD in management, I like to think of myself

more of an MD - a management dude, so that's what we're going to talk about. A

nice thing about today's presentation is is that this is something that applies

to everybody in the audience, so even though I might not have invented a new

solar car or something like that this is something that you still be able to use

today. See if I can use this correctly we'll be ok. Ok, so federal processes and

I added a scope a little bit because the last slide I want to talk a little bit

about the federal improvement team that I also am a part of. So, what is Lean Six

Sigma? You know, it's not like a Taekwondo or karate, so I don't know why I am wearing

this master black belt, but it is a methodology that improves routine

processes and this technology is used in manufacturing, it sees the service

industry, it's used in government, it's used all over in transactions. As a matter

of fact, if you wanted to start going into a car building business or a fast-food

business, you need this just as the price of admission and be able to get in

because your processes are what make you or break you in those applications.

Applies to government, we are not different, we have customers- some of them

are internal some of them of the general public, so it's a it's good for us to

know this this is found throughout the federal work space as well as you see

we've got DOD, GSA, Department of Agriculture, the Justice and Energy,

they're all using this as well so this is not just something that you're going

to find at Toyota or General Electric or General Motors or Nike or Boeing or

whatever. So, this is very useful, as a matter of fact, it's very useful in a

declining budget environment this will help you do more with less. I think it's

pretty useful, so why would I want to use this Lean Six Sigma? And in a moment I'll

tell you about more about what it is, but a typical process that you're involved

in probably has somewhere around thirty to forty percent waste. It doesn't

sound you say well do I'm pretty efficient I know what I'm doing you'd be

surprised to find out how many things in the course of your routine day are extra

things that are not really necessary and they're causing you to take more time or

cost more money to do something. You also gets better results. We can cut costs, you

can reduce your cycle time, like I've already said, and we can also eliminate

some of the errors that your process may be giving you and also maybe improve the

quality of the product that you're putting out. There's also a peephole

factor, you're coming to work every day and you're hating life you know I'm

stuck in this bad process and I can't seem to change it by improving our

processes you have a lot better morale and new organizations and finally

workload this is like getting maybe free labor or some free funding. So instead of

taking eight hours a day to do it the particular process maybe you're always

going to take you six after you're done and you get two three hours. Wouldn't it

be nice to have more time in the in the day? I think I put them - okay so how

does it work? There's three particularly important fundamental parts of it one of

them is Lean, one of them is Six Sigma, and one of them is the Theory of

Constraints. These are the three concepts that are put together and universally in

the Lean Six Sigma programs are all over the world. Lean is the reduction of waste,

a lot of us have waste in our processes. What is waste? Waste could be

things like moving things around a lot or transporting it, shipping it back and

forth, sending stuff out the Germantown and back, it could be inventory keeping

stuff just in case you need it. Meanwhile you got a big storage problem

trying to store all that stuff motion unnecessary motion having to go to

different offices or go down across the street or whatever it might be waiting

for things that's waste over processing I always think that's kind of funny you

know if you look at your remote indicate on your remote control on your

television you know there's probably 42 buttons on there I only need about maybe

six you know on-off louder softer channel up and down and the other you

know half a dozen or dozen it's on there I needed the customer doesn't really

isn't even interested in getting those features are paying for it that's over

processing over production was producing too much of something defects coming out

with stuff that has to be corrected reworking something and the last one we can

call under utilization, which means you've got people that are really

talented and they're doing menial tasks that you're paying them a lot of money

to do.Second part of Lean Six Sigma is the reduction of Six Sigma, which is

reduction of variation you want to have your process give you a standard

repeatable result every time it shouldn't take you know five minutes one

time and then take two hours and fifteen minutes the next time .You want something

that's kind of you can expect, manage your expectations. And then the third

part of that is a Theory of Constraints, which is reducing bottlenecks. Somebody

or something that's slowing down even it's just like trying to drive home at

night I guess during rush hour even though you've got very fast cars you're

sitting there and you're going very slow. So waste and variation in bottlenecks

which is Lean Six Sigma and the Theory of Constraints.

How do we do it? We use a very simple process known as DMAIC - define, measure,

analyze, improve, and control and when we start out and we do one of these things

the odds are almost 100% in your favor that you are going to find ways to

improve the process and make it better. What's your problem? I know your project

managers are probably enjoying this too because a lot of this theory is very

simple not rocket science at all. To find what your problem is, measure what

you're currently getting, analyze what your root causes of bad performance are,

improve your process by testing new improvements to see if your new process

is going to work, and then you go to the control phase where you implement it, you

measure your results, and you lock it down, that's a new way of doing business.

So, define, measure, analyze, improve, and control.

Here's another graphic along the same lines, it kind of takes these same areas,

notice that each one of them has a little tollgate review, so at the end of

each one you stop and you give your presentation to the process owner and

say here's what we found in the define phase, this is what we're going to work

on, process owner says okay keep going and

then you just keep working your way down throughout the project. At some point you

might get to a point where you find out well that was the problem and we fixed

it, they say okay stop pull the plug so you don't have to go all the way to the

control phase sometimes because sometimes you can fix the problem

earlier. So, define, measure, analyze, improve, and control. Who's involved? Well,

we have formally trained practitioners that do Lean Six Sigma. You see these

different colored belts here, they learn a body of knowledge, they get tested, they

pass an examination, and then they can perform an improvement project. So, our

different levels of expertise is a yellow belt,

which is somebody who we trained just to be able to get on a project and be able

to understand what's going on, they can spell DEMAIC, they can spell Lean Six

Sigma. Then we get a green belt. It takes maybe one week or some programs have two

or three weeks of instruction teaching them basic tools to be able to lead a

simple Lean Six Sigma project. We have a black belt and they're capable of

teaching and they lead more complex projects, they have a lot more theory and

statistics and they actually have a toolboxes it has close to 200 tools in it.

So, we have some black belts in the audience here, some of my colleagues. And

then finally a master black belt is what I'm wearing today kind of for effect

and I mentor, I lead complex projects, even though I can't spell complex, and I

certify belts.We also have sponsors who actually are there in the senior

executive management who kind of sponsor the project, we have process owners who

own the process and they have to make sure it gets done anyway so they're

really excited about getting their process fixed and subject matter experts.

Okay, so where is it being used in DOE? I love telling the story, this is like

somebody saying, "Hey tell me about your grandkids!" This is the National Energy

Technology Lab that here I'm certifying one of our green belts, but we've done

something with site support contracts, we had a review process and it was taking a

very long time and they were we were able to cut out some of the paperwork, we

cut out some of the different stops that they had to get for approval and review,

and we actually change the cycle of the evaluation so they only do it on a

yearly basis instead of semi-annually. Believe it or not this particular

process improvement probably saves us somewhere were two to three hundred

thousand dollars a year in people's time, so we consider that a really good cost

savings, that's one of my one of our best projects. We have one with chemical

handling and procurement, which means we had technicians that were standing

around up in the labs, and they're trying to fill out forms, and they're waiting in

line to get some kind of chemical they needed to do their research and we found

a way to automate some of it. We set up a dispensary where the researcher would

just come up this is what I need okay thanks kind of like getting your

prescription at a pharmacy or whatever. I moved a lot faster again some pretty

good savings, laboratory space, assignment that saved us a lot of money and just

having to come back and rework spaces when they once they set up a lab they

found out oh no it had to be soundproof or oh no we needed to have certain light

or vibration characteristics in the lab so saved a lot of money and rework. One

other one I'll mention -precious metal, accountability, and accounting that was

done and up at the labs up at Nettle to use a lot of like you know gold and

silver and some of their experiments or whatever and just even though we didn't

save any money on that particular project the fact that we had like 25

recommendations it helped us become compliant with the handling of it so we

don't have a headline that says you know the Energy Department of Energy loses 1

million dollars worth the gold or whatever. So, there are some other things

as far as compliance and accountability that can also be achieved by using a

Lean Six Sigma program or project. We have some exciting ones working right

now with the funding opportunity announcements and investment review

process. At headquarters we've done some things at talent management with

onboarding with budgeting processes and with contracting processes and we have

improved some of those at FE. This has been an ongoing effort and we have some

other folks that we're working with at other sites that are also interested in

doing some Lean Six Sigma. So, when should it it be used? It should be used now because

we have broken processes all over. Our office has the capability to train and

certify members, if you're interested in perhaps

getting some Lean Six Sigma training for a group of people, the only thing we ask

is that you give them have some kind of real project that they're going to work

on so as we're training them we're also working through the project, as they're

developing their Charter and so forth, they're actually getting learning and

they're also doing. So, this is a pretty good strategy in a declining budget

environment.

One other group I want to talk about is the Federal Improvement

Team. It's a group of government practitioners, a community of practice,

our vision is working smarter through continuous improvement and we have a lot

of the others that I saw their logos up there earlier we actually 286

practitioners that are involved in these, we have two knowledge sharing events

every year, we have a monthly lunch and learned. In fact, right now they're

meeting on the phone for their monthly monthly meeting, we share resources, we do

projects, and some of them were working with OPM I've done some training over

there, so we're trying to spread this methodology, this wonderful thing that we

have and share it with others. So, if anyone's interested in being in the

Federal Improvement Team, that's available. So, my take aways from my

particular presentation, Lean Six Sigma is a successful methodology and to

improve processes. Everybody has wasteful and broken processes,even some people

here in the audience, everybody has customers, Lean Six Sigma is just the

price of admission in some industries this works that you don't have to be

making widgets in government it works too services transactions we use this a lot

of the Coast Guard at their finance center and being able to pay those

faster and also you can use this and we can help you. So, if there's any questions

give me a shout, but I when I was teaching and learning Lean Six Sigma I

used to have to do teach backs, so I'm going to do a teach back for you now.

That doesn't seem to be working, so I may need to go okay I see why that's not

working. Okay, so I need a boom boom clap clap, here before we go we need to do a

review, if you got a bad process I'm talking to you. When you got a bad

process, you feel like you're stuck, you hate in your life, you got bad luck. To

get rid of waste, we want to be lean, cheaper, better, faster that's a much

better scene. We use Six Sigma to reduce variation, good result every time you'll

be a sensation. Lose the bottlenecks, you're going too slow, if you speed up

the process you'll be saving more dough. DEMAICS the plan to make it all happen,

if you do it just right your boss will be clapping. So process improvement will

work for the feds, work smarter ,not harder, now we're using our heads. So ,thanks

Disability Discourse: Talking About Disabilities 101. - Duration: 13:07.

Hey guys!

So today's video is another Disability Discourse, and the topic is going to be how to refer

to disabled people and how we talk about disabilities.

This is a huge huge topic, and as always I'm only an expert in my own personal experience,

and I have tried to talk to other people about this, so I have their wisdom and knowledge

to draw on as well, however there are going to be things that I miss and there are going

to be things that I don't explain right, so if you have more experience than me, please

please please talk about it in the comments.

This is, as always, a conversation, not a lecture, at least I hope that's what it is!

So please let me know anything that I get wrong or anything that I miss out, or just

your experiences in general with this kind of thing.

and start reading the comments, because hopefully people will have some really insightful and

interesting and knowledgeable things to say.

Okay, so like I said, this is a gigantic topic and I'm going to try to keep it quite simple

for this, because it is supposed to be like an introductory type thing and I don't want

to get into every rabbit hole that exists within this topic because there are a lot.

So I'm gonna start off with the most simple and basic way to be respectful of disabled

people when referring to us, um, and if you just watch like, I don't know, a minute of

this video, hopefully this will give you a good idea of just a really simple way to do

this.

And that is listen to disabled people.

There are two easy ways that I would say to do this, the first is to ask us how we prefer

to be referred to.

Really simple, takes like two seconds, and most of us will be really happy to answer

and genuinely just happy that you are interested enough or care enough to ask.

So first is ask us how we want to be referred to.

Really easy, and then you'll know that you aren't being offensive or inappropriate in

any way.

The second is, if you can't ask for whatever reason, listen to how we refer to ourselves.

So if someone refers to themselves as disabled, chances are they're fine with that term being

used about them.

If they use the specific name of their illness, then chances are they're happier with that.

Um, this is a really easy way to tell what terms people are comfortable with being used

and what terms people are not comfortable with.

So yeah, that's like the simplest thing ever.

There are a few nuances to this, but in general listen to disabled people and how we refer

to ourselves and that will give you a good idea of what is comfortable for that specific

person.

When referring to the wider group, um, like the disability community, um, I think the

word disabled is fine.

Now, I have had a lot of abled people tell me that it's not fine, however I'm gonna be

totally honest and say that I've yet to meet a disabled person who doesn't like the word

disability or finds it offensive, so i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that that is abled

people projecting onto us and telling us how to feel, because every time i've had this

conversation it goes something like this: "I'm disabled.", "Oh no no no, that's such

a negative term, you shouldn't call yourself disabled, you're not disabled, you're differently

abled..." like every time I have this conversation it feels like the abled person is trying to

make themselves feel better about my condition and it's very weird.

So I think that the word disabled for the wider community is fine.

I've never met a disabled person, as I said, who has an issue with it, so I would just

go with that.

And leading on from that last point, just one other way to be respectful: Obviously

don't tell us how to refer to ourselves.

If we refer to ourselves as disabled, obviously we don't think that's a negative term or an

offensive term.

Um, and you as an abled person do not get to decide whether it is or not.

So yeah, that's just a really really basic outline of how to talk about disabilities

and disabled people, um, as individuals and then also the disabled community as a wider

group.

So if you only watch like two minutes of this video, hopefully that gives you a nice enough

outline that you're able to be more comfortable with this kind of thing.

Okay, so we've talked about how to refer to disabled people, I just wanna quickly run

over some ways not to refer to disabled people.

Um, so obviously there are some offensive terms out there.

I'm gonna straight up say that with my type of disability I don't run into as many slurs

as a lot of the disabled community do, so if you have first hand experience with that

more than I do, please leave your thoughts and feelings in the comments below, because

it's really important to talk about this, and I'm not the person to do it.

So I'm gonna give like, once again, a really simple, really brief outline of this, but

this is not something that I have a lot of experience in, so just bear that in mind.

So there are a few terms that are universally considered offensive.

The first is the R word, or retarded, and I feel uncomfortable just saying that.

It is a slur, it is completely inappropriate to use, it's not okay to use, not just about

disabled people, but just in general just don't use that word, it's not an okay word

to use.

The second is invalid.

Um, and I've noticed that even some advocacy agencies and disability benefits will still

use the word invalid, I'm not quite sure why you would ever think that a word that is literally

in-valid would be an appropriate or non-offensive way to refer to a person, but yeah, do not

use the word invalid, it's not okay.

The next word, uh, the next term I should say, because it's two words, um is not necessarily

like a slur or super offensive, but it is generally frowned upon, and that is wheelchair-bound.

Um, kind of implies that you're like trapped, rather than like...I don't know how to explain

this, 'cause once again, not usually a wheelchair user, um, however, it gives that like negative

connotation, right?

So you're trapped in the wheelchair rather than the wheelchair being an accessibility

tool that actually helps you, and like you using the wheelchair to do more things, you're

like trapped there.

So wheelchair user is the generally accepted term for that.

Ummm, okay.

So that's like the terms that you really shouldn't use, because they're kind of offensive or

have bad connotations, or the ones that I personally can think of and talk about.

The next is just that patronising or condescending language, and this is something that I experience

a lot more than actual slurs, this seems to be much more common.

And these people tend to be people who think that they're being nice, but really they're

not.

So this includes terms like differently abled, or special or special needs.

And the reason that these are so not okay is that if I refer to myself as disabled and

then you come along as an abled person and say "oh no no no no, you're not disabled,

you're differently abled!", you're not doing that for me.

You're doing that to try to make yourself feel better about my condition, and that's

really messed up.

So you and I both know when we're having this conversation that you don't really think I'm

"differently abled".

You think I'm disabled because I am disabled.

But you wanna make yourself feel better about this conversation and feel like a good person,

so you're like "oh no no, differently abled!".

Uh, it's just kind of a weird thing to say to someone.

Um, same with like special, "oh no no no, you're special!", like no, don't do that.

It feels very condescending, it feels like you're talking down to us, and it's kinda

gross.

Really gross.

So that is some terms that you shouldn't use.

Um, the next thing we'll talk about is person first language.

This is kind of a complex topic because it's not universally agreed-upon.

You may have noticed that I say "disabled people" instead of "people with disabilities",

so that's me not using person first language, and that's because person first language isn't

something that I consider to be that important, and I haven't met that many people within

the disabled community who consider it to be that important, so it's not something that

I put a lot of thought into.

Um, that's my bad really.

So person first language, if you don't know what it is, it's basically referring to the

person first, as the title implies, and then the thing about them second.

So it would be "person with a disability" rather than "disabled person".

As I say, this is not universal at all, a lot of people don't care about it, but some

people do, and it's important to know that if someone asks you to use person first language,

do that.

Uh, the exception to this rule, I've been told, is the autistic community.

Um, and the reason they prefer non person first language is, or at least this is how

it's been explained to me, so again, please correct me if i'm wrong, um, is because person

first language separates the thing and the person.

That's the whole point of person first language, um, and for the autistic community, autism

isn't something that is wrong with you or something that you have, it's something that

you are, so they prefer not to be separated from autism, so they want to be called autistic

rather than person with autism.

Or at least that's, once again, how it's been explained to me.

So again, person first language can be a little complicated, just because, uh...not everyone

prefers it, and some people in fact actively do not prefer it, so I think more than trying

to use this in every situation, just be aware that it exists, and if someone asks you to

refer to them in person first language, you'll understand hopefully why they want that.

Uh, the last term that I want to talk about in terms of how to refer to disabled folks

is, uh, cripple.

And once again, like person first language, this one has a lot of nuances.

So within the disabled community there is a movement to take back the word cripple and

use it for positive things, like cripplepunk, things like that.

Uh, you'll probably see a lot of disabled folks referring to ourselves as cripple.

However, despite me saying in the beginning that you should copy how we refer to ourselves,

this is part of that that you shouldn't copy.

Despite disabled people taking back this word, it's still not okay for abled people to use

the word cripple.

Like not at all, it's a pretty offensive word for an abled person to use.

Just because disabled people use it, doesn't mean that abled people should be using it.

Okay, so that's a really simple rundown of some terms.

I'm trying to keep this as quick and simple as possible, because there's just so many

areas where I could go into way more detail, but that would make this video like ten hours

long and I'm not really into that, you know?

So those are some terms for disabled people or for the disabled community, next I just

wanted to do kind of a glossary of some general terms that you might see used in the disabled

community that you might not know what they mean.

Okay, so the first is spoonie.

And a spoonie is someone with a disability, and it derives from the spoon theory, which

is you haven't seen I really recommend you look up the spoon theory, it's a really great

and simple way for abled people to understand disabilities and especially chronic pain conditions.

So basically the spoon theory says that we measure our energy in spoons, and disabled

people have a very limited number of spoons to go through each day, and once you're out

of spoons, that's it.

So from there disabled people sometimes refer to ourselves as spoonies.

That's where that one comes from and that's what it means.

The next is neurodivergent and neurotypical.

Neurodivergent just refers to people with either mental health issues or any, um, any

disability or illness or autism that affects the way that your brain works, so that is

neurodivergent.

Obviously there is a divergence in their neurology.

Uh, and neurotypical is the opposite of that, where your neurology is typical.

Pretty simple, right?

Uh, next is allistic, and that is the opposite of autistic.

So people with autism or autistic people are autistic, and people without autism are allistic.

Again, pretty simple.

Okay, so that is...I think pretty much everything that I wanted to talk about this time around.

There's so so much more in this topic, and when I was writing notes for this I just wrote

like pages and pages and then I kept cutting it back because I feel like I did want this

to be quite simple and introductory and not too daunting or scary for anyone who is getting

into all of this for the first time.

So I think that's where I'll leave it for today.

I will probably end up doing another video with more detail on certain parts of what

I covered here, just because there's so much to talk about and it's all really important

but I don't think this is the right video for that.

it reminds me of how things have changed.

It's almost unrecognizable.

Well, I've got four daughters.

The things we enjoyed as kids -

they don't get to see anymore.

When the mines closed down

of course you've got a lot of supporting industries that go along with the mines.

They dry up too.

We were broke and couldn't borrow money.

That's about as bad off as you can get for a little town

Last time they did have fireworks.

My kids wouldn't have been born at all.

So what happens is that when you become so present, you start to complete the tapestry

because there are moments in time that haven't been created and it goes on to

you because you are that significant cog in this spiritual realm, okay, in this physical form.

You are that significant cog that will complete that beautiful tapestry

that we call life and come into a oneness.

Barbara Sinatra, Widow of FRANK Sinatra Died TODAY & How did she die? - Duration: 0:59.

Barbara Sinatra, wife of the legendary singer Frank Sinatra, died on Tuesday at 90 years

old.

She died of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends at her home in, California.

Frank and barbara married for 22 years when the singer died of a heart attack in 1998.

She also wrote a book in 2011 "Lady Blue Eyes: My Life with Frank, In which she wrote about

the first meeting with frank Sinatra talked to the New York Times in 2011

about her superstar husband remaining on friendly terms with his ex-wives, which she said didn't

bother her.

In 1986 she and her husband founded the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center, which is located

on the Eisenhower Medical Center, California.

The center provides services for abused, neglected and at risk children.

Sinatra remained actively involved in the facility which bore her name.
